I don't often write reviews, but occasionally when I run across a restaurant that I think is worth mentioning to everyone I go for it! We have been taking our two dogs to Chaupain Bakery for a long time now. Not only are they welcoming to the dogs, they give them Pup Cups so of course it's our dog's favorite place also! It has a lovely relaxing, comfortable patio. Their regular menu for breakfast and lunch is outstanding with an incredible variety. However, recently we found out they are now offering happy hour Wednesday through Sunday from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm! It is definitely now one of our favorite Happy Hours around! Chris, the Kitchen Manager, is a master at not only presentation but the creative dishes he comes up with. The staff as always is gracious and professional. I first tried this bakery through a Farmer's Market, but that review was flagged for having not visited the actual store location. While out in Newport visiting family this month, I happened upon a next door toy store (cute and unique items) to take my son to and lo and behold here was the Chaupain Bakery. I wanted to pass, but son wanted a snack so I "checked in" and thought, what the heck, I can give it another try and update a review while I'm at it. Maybe the experience and value is better in-store. The croissants with filling just didn't hit the spot for us. The pistachio croissant was still more insta-worthy than something I'd buy again. I keep wanting more pistachio flavor and less overly sweet. Not the right balance for us. Had too much filling to croissant for my taste. I have tried a LOT of croissants so that is just my preference. Also, I tend to like a fluffier, flaky one. We always try the almond croissants as well and unfortunately would pass for same reasons as above. The narrow pastry with custard topped with fresh strawberries was much better to have in the store. I asked if the lavender iced latte was something they'd recommend and they said the honey lavender was better. I ordered this on their recommendation and enjoyed it. Veering away from my vanilla latte is always a risk so this was a plus. Visiting this location increased my original review from 2 to 3 stars. Parking: Located in a shopping plaza so there were plenty of spots in this lot shared with Ace Hardware and a grocery store, etc. read more

I have eaten here a few times over the years and enjoyed my experience but this time was different. The service was a 3 the cleanliness of the restaurant didn't seem as usual. It's only noon and the floors are very dirty the condiments area definitely needed attention . The energy level was poor . Very disappointing . Not sure what's going on ! read more

Chaupain is gosh darn bomb with their laminated pastries. My eyes definitely clouded my ordering process. I think I froze when the lady asked if that's all, having one of those moments of being paralyzed by the freedom of choice. With two pastries on the way and two breakfasts, I couldn't justify a quiche as well. It'll just have to be for next time. But seeing all the food floating past to other tables only solidified the excitement one can have after placing an order. From what I could see AND taste, there's no shortage on flavor nor skimping on spinach! That omelette was substantial but half of everything inside was cold. I didn't know how to feel about that at the time but thinking back now it made the omelette not greasy, so even if it is two distinct temperatures it's still so good and cooked right. The shakshouka (sp?) was very hot and incredibly flavorful with the egg still rightfully runny. The only thing that would've made it to die for on the spot is a little more bread or side potaters to soak up that delicious tomato goo. Chaupain Bakery is a French bakery. It is owned by a husband and wife team. It is a small chain. This is the only one we have been to and it is amazing. Parking is easy and the prices are fair for what you get. This is not just a bakery, they also serve Breakfast and lunch and what we had was great. We went back once. They have great artisan breads, pastries, and even quiches. It is all fresh and all baked there. We first learned about them at the Farmer's Market in Dana Point. We got some bread and a few almond pistachio croissants. We knew we had to find it while in town. The service was so nice and friendly. The place is super clean and there are tables for eating. It is all just so cute and it smells so good. All of the bread and pastries we had were great. But we really loved their breakfast and lunch. We had a baked baguette with the best butter and homemade preserves. It is called the La Tartine. Their sunrise croissant is great. It has scrambles eggs, the best cheddar cheese and a pesto aioli. You can add avocado or bacon for a just a couple of dollars more. Their Quiche is a must try. It has mushroom bacon leek with ham or bacon or they have a spinach one that also has cheese. For lunch try their Kaskrout Merguez sandwich which has Pan roasted merguez sausage, Tunisian salad of cucumber, tomato, red onion, extra virgin olive oil, and harissa all served on a toasted baguette which is so good. It's in a plaza where Pavilions is so parking is free but shared. The pastries are delicious' scrumptious as per usual. Wow wow wow Chaupain did not disappoint Came here for mother's day for brunch and my mom sure was happy. We were greeted by the nicest girls working at the pastry case and they explained how to order. They had such a wide variety of pastries and breakfast/lunch items. I also love that they were giving out samples of different pastries. Everything looked so good it was so hard to pick! We ended up getting the mother's day special omelette, french dip sandwich, chicken pesto sandwich, and pistachio croissant. Everything was spot on and you can tell everything was made fresh. It's dangerous to have this bakery near the bank, grocery & hardware stores. I'm tempted way too often! The pastries are laminated perfectly so they are flaky while never dry. The selection of food and drinks is large. It's a great place to meet friends or get food-to-go. The coffee drinks are "okay" and can take some time, so if you get drinks to-go, be prepared to wait a little bit during the crowded times. There's seating outside, as well as inside. read more

This place is fast becoming one of my favorite bakeries. I tried some its pastry items at the Claremont Farmers Market and also tried some of its food at its Laguna Niguel location few weeks ago. This is the closest location to my house, although it's still kind of far. I just need to try its original location in Laguna Hills to complete my journey. This place has some amazing croissants. I am really impressed with its pistachio and almond croissants. They were both super buttery, fresh and packed with goodness. Pistachio croissant seems to be one of the most popular items here. Its Chocolate Elfroy was also excellent. It's a chocolate croissant with vanilla custard and almond. Another item I like is its Cinnamon Cream Cheese Cruffin, which is something I got at every location I visited. I haven't tried any food at this location but was impressed with its shakshouka and eggs benedict at the Laguna Niguel location. This is a smaller location than Laguna Niguel but still had decent amount of outdoor seating. read more

I love this bakery! My favorite thing about this location is the croissants which are suuuuuppper buttery, flakey and delicious and the team of employees who work there. I always have the most amazing interactions with employees from day 1 and the service is very good. Hazel (who i used to get confused with her twin Rachelle, equally amazing) was so kind on my first visit that it got me hooked and ive been coming here very regularly ever since. I always bring my friends to Chaupain who come to visit! I used to mainly go to one of the farmers market locations and the people had very strong french accents and are kinda hard to understand but the team at the Newport location is amazing. I especially love Carly, she helped comfort me one time after a rowdy toddler "bit" me with his dinosaur toy lol.... Carly and Memo do an amazing job leading the team and Athena and Taylor are always so kind and welcoming, they are what truly makes this bakery worth going to. The feeling of stepping into this tiny was so sweet. The smell of bread alone spoke for itself about how good the pastries were but honestly I was more blown away by how family oriented the service made me feel! When we were on the fence about some pastries, the person we talked to gave us some to try for free - that speaks volumes on the confidence that they have in their product! I'm so sorry I don't remember his name but all of the sales associates on the team are really very sweet. I bought these for my sister's tea party and was in such a rush to show them off, I didn't get a chance to take some pictures for this review! The pastries got so many compliments and were the first things to be wiped clean off the table. Came here on a Friday at noon and it was busy! Practically every table was filled with people and there was a line. You order at the back of the line and pay up front. I loved that they had free samples!!! I got to try their apple pie dessert, passionfruit eclair and pistachio croissant. My tummy is rumbling just thinking about it. They were all SOOO GOOD. Not too sweet, not artificial and just delightful. I got the chocolate elfroy and strawberry envelope. These also hit it out of the park. The pastry was flaky and fluffy. The custard was abundant. The strawberries were fresh. Every single bite was swoon worthy and their presentation was superb. They also have savory sandwiches and open-faced sandwiches in their cooler case. What a cute place to visit for lunch! I came here with a group of friends and tried the Kaskrout Merguez Sandwich and the Chicken Pesto Sandwich, along with some pastries and other yummy offerings. The kaskrout was my favorite of the two sandwiches - the sausages were so flavorful, and the dipping sauce was sublime. I might have scraped the bowl clean! The salad that came with it was bright and fresh, with just a slight drizzle of dressing - just the way I like it! We came here to celebrate a birthday, and the staff heard us singing and brought out a slice of the German chocolate cake for the birthday boy - how nice! I went back and bought a chocolate chip cookie, a pack of cinnamon cookies, a pistachio croissant, and a blueberry tart. Everything was so delicious. Prices are pretty reasonable as well. WOW!...a beautiful stop and go bakery. WOW! would also be the word I would use to describe all the food I tried. The sandwiches were amazing - tried the chicken pesto and the kaskrout sandwich. Both were great but I preferred the kaskrout more bc the marinara sauce it came with was so good. Also had way too many pastries in one day. Carb overload but so good. The vanilla cheesecake, tiramisu we're all great. We came here for a birthday and the staff actually gave our friend a piece of cake for his birthday. So nice since it's an order and sit down kind of place. I also tried the chocolate chip scone which was flat but soooo good. There Ferreo rocher cream puff was *chefs kiss*! Tried out Chaupain Bakery today and it was a lovely start to the morning! We tried the ham and Swiss croissants. I asked them to be warmed and they were still pretty cold in the middle. I think they would have been a 10/10 if warmed up more but I'm going to give them a 7/10 since they were cold. Loved the crunch and they fill it with a good amount of ham and cheese! I would try again and ask for it to be double warmed!! The pastry selection looked to die for. I must come back and try more goodies! The desserts all looked incredible, the pistachio croissant is next on my list, and the coffee eclair! I feel like I need to come back and try more to give it another solid review. I also really want to try the lattes! Overall we had a nice morning and a good experience, but I can't say much until I give it another shot!!! read more

Ive been wanting to try this bakery for awhile now. Finally got a chance to stop by on a Friday afternoon. They were the too busy that afternoon with a wide range of pastries left to choose from. We chose the jalapeno cheddar croissant, ham & cheese croissant, the coconut mango pastry, and the berry cream pastry. The worker was nice enough to throw in a few more items so I'm not too sure what theyre called but they were good. All the pastries were super flaky and buttery. They were all my favorite just because the outside was super crispy and flaky. I had some leftover the next day and they were still really good! Its comparable to the pastries in Paris. After lunch at nearby Fashion Island, we stopped by Chaupain to pick up some sweets to take home. There was a short line with a few people ahead of us. We grabbed a monkey bread loaf, banana walnut loaf, ham & cheese croissant, pistachio croissant, almond croissant, and a slice of chocolate cake--everything came out to $55. So many delicious looking French pastries!! My favorite was the Paris Brest, it was a crunchy hazelnutty perfection. Also got the salmon toast which was alright, the bread was a little too tough so I was having a hard time eating it without all the toppings coming off the bread. Natalie and Taylor are the kindest people I've ran into in OC/Newport. Natalie being very informative with what's offered at Chaupain and then Taylor being super respectful and sweet. They're a great pair to have working for this establishment. I also love how light I feel with the meals I eat here. There's plenty of flavor offered here, the pastries are why you'd expect from a bakery of this tier. I'd give all the hours to those girls asap(if they wanted it) cause they're the main reason I'd keep coming back. Customer service is key to success for restaurants. read more

Absolutely amazing and quaint place with extremely high quality bread and patisserie. I've been looking at this place for a while and finally made my way over here before work. From the variety of fresh made bread, the exquisite patisserie, quiche, sandwiches, it's just amazing. Started with a few things, but can't wait to be back and try more. First time coming here this morning. This review is for the staff (cashier). I don't know if he's having a bad day or what. But he doesn't have an inch of customer service. He has an attitude or whatsoever. I'm paying for my loaves of bread, salad & yogurt. I saw him bagging cinnamon rolls added to my total order, I told him that's not mine. Then suddenly a gentleman behind me saying he don't need a paper bag for his cinnamon rolls. Then the cashier told me that it was mine, I said that it was not mine, I only ordered the breads, salad & yougurt. I can see in his face that he's annoyed. And keep insisting that he asked me with that cinnamon rolls order is mine! Lols! I already told him many times that it was not mine! Oh my gosh! And the gentleman already told him that it's his order! The worst part is, he just push the bread on the counter to me and didn't even offer me a paper bag and said that I'm good to go after fixing the payment.. Like WTH is his problem? And while waiting for my salad (to go) order, the gentleman told me that it's always been like that, there's no flow of the order that they're not paying attention with the customer's orders.. He feels sorry for me but told him that I'm ok.. I don't wanna loose my cool on that.. oh well, I'm not coming back anyways..My first & last.. Delicious bakery with good coffee, a decent amount of seating and plenty of parking. The pastries are delicious, especially the eclair which has a creme patissiere filling! The croissants are flaky and fresh and come in a variety of sweet and savory options. There are several locations but the Newport one offers more options. read more
