I have been here twice this summer. I got some bakery at the first time that allured me the second visit with my family. I will say this place is definitely over rated. The food is attractive on eyes but the taste is not matching the looks. If the French cuisine didn't get such good reputation all around would, I would have cancelled my willing to visit France. They are lacking of service, too, because of short of staffing. They don't have enough staff to clean up the table. I will say a normal American fast food restaurant will do a better job. I visited Moulin for the first time during my lunch break and was very impressed! It looks like they own a good portion of this plaza with both the café and boulangerie. There's plenty of outdoor seating and a lot of space inside. It was generally crowded on a given weekday lunch, so the grab and go counters are a great option for a quick lunch. I grabbed a jambon fromage sandwich and a small potato salad, which was ready right away. The staff was friendly and explained the options and how ordering works right away, which made me feel very welcomed. The sandwich tasted great, and the baguette had the right amount of crunch and went well with the fillings. I'd probably want to try the other salad options, though. I used to really love this place. The ambience is great and collection was wonderful.. But today I came across a cashier lady who wasn't so friendly. II was hoping it to be another kind and beautiful lady that can help me but she was unfortunately busy with previous customer. So when it's my turn, I have to suffer. Thus , the experience today was nerve-racking and stressful .. I think even a vending machine would do a better service than her. I wonder if she just didn't like her job. I appreciate Moulin. Food selection in the café portion is tasty, I made the mistake of not coming on one of the days for brunch (Sat/Sunday). They have a proper restaurant right next to it, fancy-esk, with fancy-esk pricing. The staff in both areas were nice and explained the menu items. I traditionally grab a cappuccino and eggs Benedict during brunch (things rotate seasonally). They have a little market (insert dollar signs), and fresh pastries. 'Busy' vibe, with French music playing. Great, quick service. It does get busy during the breakfast/brunch rush. read more

I love Moulin! I will say my experience has varied a lot depending on the different locations (as with others as well), but the main store here at Newport has always been great. The inside decor reminds me so much of the Paris streets and they have walls full of French snacks like biscuits and cookies you can purchase. Then there's a section where they sell yummy pastries and baked goods, including croissants, tropezines, Neapolitans, and more. On the other side of the store you have a place where you can order hot foods or pre-made food like salads, sandwiches, and stews. Their French onion soup and veal dishes are my personal favorites. There's an abundant amount of seats outside where you can enjoy your food. It gets pretty crowded on weekend mornings especially with parking as it is in a popular plaza but it's worth it if you're looking for something that emulates the Parisian cafe experience in OC. read more

The food here is so simple and delicious! Food has always been good, never an issue. Only giving four stars because it is a struggle to find seating, food can take awhile to come out, and staff has tried to bring us wrong food orders several times as they bring it out based on the number you place on your table. I still love coming here because of the tasty menu they have. My go to order is the Le Croque Madame which doesn't look like much, but it's so yummy! I did not think it could get any better........ but, with the new additions to the menu, I had to try the Salmon tartar.... oh my, so incredible and as I work in Catering and eat it all the time, its the best I have ever had. They got the mix of ingredients perfect!!! could have eaten two or three, but had to save room for my favorite, the steak tartar, which was its usual fantasic self!! Also should out to my server, not sure the name but she is from Turkey and always so nice and accommodating. Wish you were all a bit closer to me but when I am in the area I never miss a meal there. this place was really interesting! they do french food, and i went here to grab lunch after moving into my new place. first off, if you come around lunchtime on a weekend, parking is going to be hell. i ended up giving up on parking near the restauarant altogether, parked elsewhere, and walked 8 minutes to moulin. second, you should note that all you do is order inside, and then all of the seating is outside (the ambiance is very much rich orange county people grabbing lunch). in my opinion, the food is pretty tasty - i got the build your own plate with sausage, potato, brussel sprouts, and corn salad and loved all of it - but overpriced. because the food is so pricey and all of the seating is outside (you need to order it and bring it out yourself), i would give the place an 8/10. however, i really do think the food is very good and i want to go back to try their baked goods. read more

Worth for a visit ------------------------------------------------ The pastries are really good but service is horrible. Went there half an hour ago and ordered at least 10 pastries and two pies, the lady at register put my pastries in a paper bag, I told her I need those in the box, she literally gave me a unfolded box, having me do it myself with bare hands.....like for real? Coffee and food ordered via DoorDash. It is near my work. Unfortunately, figuring out where to pick up was confusing. I had to wait for the coffees to be made but that wasn't the problem. Both coffees tasted like warm water and both were supposed to have an extra shot. Didn't taste like it. Didn't taste like much of anything... this is my second time ordering here. Voulez-vous manger avec moi? Moulin is a French café that launched in 2014 in this Newport Beach spot. They recently started a bistro concept next door, but my eyes were on the main store with their menu of French sandwiches, crepes, and pastries. We stopped by after wandering through a nearby nursery and were pretty hungry by then - or at least I was. I wish I'd read the menu carefully before approving of the Le Parisien Ham And Cheese ($10). It's served as an outright cold (not even room temp) sandwich. Including the baguette bread. The bread would've been much nicer if served warm, and melty cheese would've complemented the ham nicely too. It was definitely the lowlight of everything. Fortunately, I was able to grab some potato and bacon soup from a tablemate to deal with the 'wich. It was creamy and quite thick, and although it leaned salty, I didn't mind because I was eating it with a not-so-salty entree. Most importantly, the soup was served hot, so I was able ti counteract the cold bread with it. The Crepe Complete ($11) was a winner though. It was everything that the sandwich was not. Golden brown crepe, gooey cheese, and tasty ham were topped with a sunny side up egg for even more richness. The side salad had a huge pile of fresh greens and a nice light dressing. Definitely the most generous-feeling portion of anything. I also enjoyed the Friands ($7), which I ate later on with some oven rewarming. The Pork kinda like the rich man's version of what the Vietnamese adapted into the pate chaud. Savory, juicy meat pair well with buttery and flaky puff pastry. A bit pricier than what I'm used to, but I enjoyed it. The Ham & Cheese has gooey cheese, but the mild ham feels too restrained in salt in this application. The pastries are pretty dang small, but they pack a punch. Baba Au Rhum ($7.50) was fluffier than past versions which I've had, and the rum which they allow you to pipette into the dough doesn't soak away that mouthfeel. The Paris-Brest ($6.50) had a smooth hazelnut cream, light dough, and toasted almond slices. Very good, but in a much smaller portion than I've had it before. The baby-sized Canelé ($2.00) had a joyfully chewy exterior with a rich boozy (without the presence of alcohol) and custardy interior. It's good for a few tasty bites, depending on how restrained you are. The Café ($2.50) was pretty good too. Definitely more roasty character even with cream added than I typically find at similar restaurants, and reasonably priced. Service was quick even though it was a fairly busy weekday lunch hour. Perhaps we avoided the bulk of the lunch rush, and we were also fortunate to find seating on the spacious patio. Moulin is a solid French concept overall. I'd be happy to return if I'm in this town in the future, and I'll likely give their newer, more accessible (for my routine) spot in Costa Mesa a shot soon. read more

j'aime ce resto! Apologies to my French teacher back in high school, I had to use google translate for that. However, I'm definitely not sorry for going to Moulin during my visit to Irvine! Moulin took me to the streets of somewhere rural and friendly in France (apologies to my geography teacher as well), but the atmosphere was great, coupled with the perfect California weather, this is the spot for your Sunday brunch. Amazing selection of French pastries and treats. Even more diverse variety of selection of brunch items. The first thing that caught my eye was the canele, dense and flavorful. Subtly sweet but packed with rich aroma, a must have! Le corque madam is another popular item that we had to try. Despite the popularity I find the dish to be rather mediocre. Though it does have great flavors, nothing truly stands out. Moulin Omelette was surprisingly tasty. Upon serving, the presentation value was underwhelming but don't let it fool you. Embedded in the perfectly cooked golden eggs are pesto chicken and mushrooms. A perfect balance of flavors! Overall, Moulin is popular for a reason. Great craftsmanship from the chefs, amazing atmosphere, and a wide selection of items. They just seemed to have filled in all the gaps of a customer desire. On the downside, it is hard to find a parking spot due to its popularity, and after ordering your food, it may take you a few minutes to find a seat. I wanted to try this place for a while and finally made a trip out for Saturday brunch. That was our mistake. I do not recommend coming here at busy times like weekend brunch times. Go elsewhere. Otherwise, it's busy, chaotic, and not enjoyable. I think it would be more enjoyable during down times. Outside, seating is open to anyone. There is staff that buss the tables, but we had one rude staff person tell us to move out of the way so he could clean the table. We weren't in his way though and were not near him nor the table. I don't hold it against someone to be unfriendly but it can negatively affect the customer experience. On the contrast, the young man who brought us our order later was very nice and respectful. Inside, there are different counters for different things and it's disorganized. Also, to wait in different lines when it's busy is not efficient for the customer. We ordered a crepe complet, almond croissant, chocolate croissant, ham & cheese baguette, and iced latte. Overall, the food is 4-stars, but I would not go out of the way to come this place. If you're in the area, it's an option but avoid busy hours. read more

Not only is it a cafe offering breakfast items such as crepes, soups, salads and sandwiches, but it is also a boulangerie and patisserie serving up the tastiest morsels! Their kitchen menu is offered all day. I tried the ham & cheese sandwich and the French onion soup and I would highly recommend both. We were celebrating a birthday so we had the pleasure of sampling a wide assortment of pastries and they were divine! They have quite an extensive menu, so I can't wait to visit again and try different menu items. There is plenty of outdoor seating but Moulin is a popular spot. The hype is real, and the desserts are to die for! After hearing about this French restaurant/bakery in Newport for a while and driving by a few times, we finally decided to try it out today. The parking was not easy, it's really a busy plaza with a lot of cars coming in and out. We went in the bakery side to just order a few items to go, although they do have a full restaurant menu that's mostly sandwich, omlette, and crepe focused. We tried out three beautiful looking desserts; the Hazelnut Chocolate (mousse), the Flan de Parisienne, and the Orange Choocolate. The flan was classic in flavor, not too sweet, and you could see the special of vanilla in the creme with a uniquely flaky crust. The Hazelnut was solid layers of mousse and a few bits of hazelnuts, which was my favorite. We gave the orange chocolate to my daughter, whom she loved! Overall, their dessert selection was wide-ranging, moderately priced ($8ea of ours), and well balanced and not overly sweet. We are excited to come back and try out their lunch menu! read more

Cute French cafe! It gets really crazy during the weekend, but they expanded their outside tables all the way to the back to accommodate the increase in outdoor dining. My family loves the pastries (I don't like the ones with almond bases but that's just a personal preference) and always sticks up on them to bring home. I love the omelets and croque monsieur! Always hot and fresh and comes with a side of fruit or salad. The coffee is pretty good, too, although since the pandemic started, refills are $1 instead of free. The absolute most rude staff. How are they all so mean? From the register to the servers. I was standing in line to order from the display case, and one of them in an ill-mannered tone, said hurry up there's other people. What do you want. I was shocked, and responded with, absolutely nothing from here, thank you. The food had flies on it. Everything looked old so I was looking at it all trying to decide if I should even take chance. There is another section of the store that is for cold sandwiches, and like to go items or cold salads. I would say the baked goods are authentic / French style. The food is meh. Pricey not the best value. - I got 2 scoops of cucumber salad, and two scoops of beet salad. $13 - Over priced for not tasting that great, seemed to have dill, oil, a touch of sugar. How can salad be made so tasteless? - $9 hot panini - chicken, pesto, tomato and a slice of cheese - NOT TASTY, just meh, it was underseasoned - Apricot tart, Apricot custard on a rectangular croissant, 2 mini croissants (tasty but not worth $1.50 each) and a chocolatey buttery fruit tart $6 - Coffee came out quick, and was good - There is a water station with tiny cups - There is plenty of cafe / boulangerie type seating outside and a few tables inside The cashier is not good at recommendations. Their customer service sucks. When I complained about disappointment with my small sandwich they said nothing could be done. The hot was a $1 difference price than the cold sandwich. Came on Mother's Day not anticipating how long the lines were going to be. They moved relatively quickly, with myself waiting in line to buy butter and my brother standing in the bakery line. It was hustling and bustling inside and I could see a wide selection of other French goods for purchase around the store. We decided to just stick with tried and true croissants and almost croissants. The almond ones were the standout amongst the two; they were warm, moist and mildly sweet not to mention very hefty. The butter croissants were better than your average croissant you would get in the US, but unfortunately had more of a bread consistency than flakey and buttery. I was sadly disappointed with the regular croissants as they looked amazing on the outside. I would still come back to try other bakery items. read more

I think for what it is, this place is very impressive. It's able to handle large crowds, has ample seating, great selection of pastries/sandwiches, and certainly has a unique atmosphere that separates itself from other regular cafes. It's smart that they have the pastries on one end to be ordered separately from the entrees (sandwiches, salads, and other prepped foods) as the line does not get bogged down by one register. The French pastries looked great and we ended up ordering an apple tart, cannelles, and a couple sandwiches. There was also fresh orange juice at the end of the register line, which was good but could've been chilled instead of left out at room temperature. The apple tart was not overly sweet and paired great with a cup of coffee, and the sandwiches were simple yet full of flavor. The ham & cheese and moulin sandwiches are both great options, as they also use a panini press on both sandwiches. Parking can be a slight headache as it's a packed parking lot with 1 direction parking and some impatient drivers, but once you're in the lot I'm sure you will enjoy checking out this cafe! read more

Definitely get here early if you want to parse the full selection of baked goods; lunch from the deli counter is also fantastic, whether eaten there or taken to go (great for a spontaneous picnic). Strong coffee, authentic tarts and baguettes, lots to enjoy for everyone. At some point, you're going to want to split the half roasted chicken and some sides with a friend! I'm not big on sweet stuff as you can see most of my reviews are for restaurants and savory dishes, but at this place I always grab some pastry items before I leave. On the day we visited around mid morning with temperature in the 60s and a blowing wind, the food gets cold quickly. Order was taken inside and a server bought the food to your table when ready. Our order included an almond croissant, a croissant sandwich and 2 omelettes (1 with bacon the other with chicken). The almond croissant was good, crispy and full of almond taste. The croissant sandwich was also good, crispy and good favored. The omelettes were not up to par. The bacon one except for the bacon bits, was bland tasting. The chicken omelette was worst. It was tasteless and the meat was tough, probably not even worth a 1 star rating. The only redemption may be the tube of jam. It's from France! Overall a bit disappointing.
