The best German food in my opinion and the opinions of many others given there is always a minimum wait of 45-60 mins. Their service is good but it can take a very long time to get your entree, so I highly recommend ordering an appetizer. All meals come with a delicate house salad and a bread basket filled with pumpernickel raisin bread. Mountain Bruhaus is consistently delicious. I posted some pics of my favorite dishes. I endure a 2.5 car ride in each direction to eat here!!! But we always visit Awosting Falls or Lake Minnewaska as an excuse to be close enough to go. Whent for lunch. Took over an hour for a burger and salad. Done with this overrated restaurant, by the way, there was not a crowd. One of my absolute favorite restaurants in the region. When I lived in NYC, we would come here with friends once a year after hiking at Lake Minnewaska, and I still always come when I'm in the area. In normal times, the dining area is welcoming, crowded, and large. This time we had curb-side delivery which was served hot and with utensils. Prices are very reasonable and the ingredient quality is quite good. The Bavarian pretzel with the horseradish and smoked Gouda dips is probably the best pretzel I've had being both very filling, warm, not too salty, and went well with the dips. We also had the a la Holstein veal schnitzel with egg, anchovies, capers, spaetzle, and cabbage; and Herring filet in cream sauce served with some rye bread. The schnitzel combo goes very well together. The Herring had a bit too much sauce for my taste which I pushed aside, but had a deliciously strong flavor. This time I didn't have any of the sausages or specials, but they're always great too. read more

Chaos on the mountain You can climb the nearby mountain in the time it takes to get your seat and your food. Despite having a reservation, we waited nearly 75-minutes in the crowded vestibule for our table. Once seated, it was another hour before our food arrived and even then the burgers were burnt (not charred, mind you, but burnt to a crisp) and the schnitzels were cold. Instead of gorgeous red cabbage, the heart of every German meal, we got lukewarm red beets (think canned vegetables and you get the drift). Our server was pleasant and doing the best she could with a packed, ie, overbooked house, but there are systemic problems that are obvious in what can only be described as absolute and total chaos. I'm glad to see a restaurant doing well, but it's hard to understand how an establishment that has been around for decades can't (or won't) manage reservations or even acknowledge that they messed up. You know things are off the rails when your in-laws, friends of the original owners and loyal customers of the Mountain Brauhaus for nearly 40 (!!) years, say "Never again." read more

Stopped for lunch on the way home. They had a fantastic selection of German food and beers. I wad the weiner schnitzel with spetzel and red cabbage and my wife had a grilled cheese and salad. All the food was excellent ether portions were generous. Great food and great service and we will absolutely visit again. read more

Super authentic German food in the middle of nowhere. All the food was spectacular. The beer selection was phenomenal. Service was extremely slow but the food was so good I'd go back in a heartbeat. Got the pretzel with horseradish gouda cheese dip. Pretzel was fantastic. Got the klops (aka German meatballs over spaetzle) and every but (especially the spaetzle) was delicious. Entree came with a small salad. It was fine but the onion vinaigrette was a bit bitter. Id recomend a different dressing. Food was ok but the schweihaxe did not had the crust you expect in a true Bavarian restaurant, I live 13 years in Germany and can tell the difference. Asked for a mass( 2l) and they brought the American version (0,5). Not really what you would get in Munich. I yelped "farm to table", "seafood", "fish", and "american". Somehow regardless of what I punched into the engine, Mountain Brauhaus made the top 3 searches. Do I think Mountain Brauhaus is farm to table? Definitely not. Did I think Mountain Brauhaus was good? Definitely yes. Would I go back again? Yes. Would I wait close to 2.5 hours again? Definitely not. I ordered the pork shank and the Wiener Goulash. Being that my hunger state was starving and cold, the Wiener Goulash really hit the right spots. However between the goulash and the pork shank, I returned to the state of starvedom having to wait about an hour between appetizer and entree. I really do think my pork shank was delicious though and it hit fell off the bone. My friends thought the dishes were A-ok, but not spectacular. Also compliments to our server who was so kind, attentive, and thoughtful. The wait time to dinner time took 4 hours, which I think is way too long and for those reasons, I'm hesitant to return. read more

I am changing my review to reflect how the restaurant is handling the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions: The food here is still the BEST. The staff is still the BEST. There is nothing to complain about. They have 7 outdoor tables that fill up pretty quickly (reservations only). There is a picnic area in the back that is first come first serve. There are some tables but you are also allowed to bring a blanket and have a picnic-style meal in a socially distanced manner. There is PLENTY of shade available (I read one review that said it was too hot outside? All the of the dining tables are covered for shade and the picnic area has shade too. Quit complaining about things they can't control). The website CLEARLY states that dining is outdoor only. They are doing the best they can and they are doing a fantastic job! They let 1 person in the building at a time to use the restroom, masks required. Hand sanitizer is available. You can order takeout over the phone or at the door and they will even bring the food to your car for you if you want. The bar is still open and you can get drinks as long as you order food in accordance with NYS guidelines. Overall Mountain Brauhaus is one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. They deliver on quality, quantity, affordability and friendliness time and time again. The negative review that was posted in response to a family being told to eat outside is bewildering to me. Definitely need a reservation. Even with the reservation we waited for about 20 minutes. It was packed. Our server was super sweet and attentive. Apps came out quick but the food took a while. But who cares because it was ahhhhhmazing. The pot roast was incredible. My mom would be so mad knowing i ordered that because i never ate hers growing up but i saw someone else eating it and it looked so good i had to try it. Now ill have to try hers lol. They were super accommodating to our one guest who was vegan and another vegetarian. They actually offer a fair amount of those options which i was surprised to see. It is probably the only solid choice in town. Make a reservation especially if you're there during the weekend. We wait about 45 minutes for seats at the bar. But it was worried. Portion is huge and perfect after a day of hiking or whatever activity you do around the minnewaska/mohonk area. People at the bar are quite friendly and may start a conversation with you. We didn't mind - there seem to be quite a few locals dining there which is a great sign. We are not big beer drinkers but still prefer to be seated at the bar than the dining area. Watching the bartenders (one of them I think is the owner) in action and dealing with drunk customers was quite fun and entertaining. I ordered the fried chicken cutlet with the mushroom sauce (sorry forgot the German name). It came with spaetzle and sauerkraut and also salad and bread. SO GOOD! Best German food I've ever eaten in my life! To start, make sure you call ahead and ask for priority seating. They do not take reservations, but the place is so popular that you'll wait hours for a table. Calling ahead will get you placed on a wait list which will chop your weight time down to only 15 or 20 mins on a really packed night. The waitstaff is incredible, they see to all of your needs and check on you despite it being so busy. The food is the best German food I've ever had, even better than Epcot! My favorite entree is the Veal Jaeger Schnitzel with Spaetzle, absolutely incredible! Their portion sizes are very generous, so I always go home with a meal for the next day. My family was visiting from out of town. We went over to Mountain Brauhaus to have dinner but when we got there we were told that it would be about a half hour wait. In the mean time they were sitting customers that came over after us. They asked us how many we were. We were six adults and three toddlers. His response was was,"So nine humans". We then try to place an order on line and we were told we could. When we got our order together and called we were told that they couldn't take an order for six people over the phone. This is a harsh review to write maybe. I suspect people come here and have a much better experience. The food was solid that is for sure, 3.5/5. But we went upstate for the weekend, and a few friends had recommended this place so we piled in with a late reservation for 10! Problem was, they were absolutely rammed. It is obviously a rarity because 2 of the 3 staff we worked with simply couldnt handle it. This started with waiting for the table. A young man working the tables outside was at best blatantly rude, and worst, probably lucky I didn't take him into the carpark and give him a right whack! Being physical with women, even if they are in your way is no way to do business. So after I explained to him what the outcome of further misdemeanours would be he continued with mutterings under his breath that didn't go unnoticed. After moving inside, we continued on... They missed 2 of the 10 orders, which again, I consider an outcome of the busy-ness of the restaurant. By the time the orders arrived, it was too late to eat them, everyone else had finished. We got them take away and never ate them. Kind of a weird one because I suspect on a less busy night it is a fantastic place. Oh well - they get what they get. I almost hate writing a review for this place because it means it'll just get more crowded. I've been coming here for almost 40 years (OMG!), so I guess I can admit I'm obsessed with the food. The traditional German menu is pretty perfect, especially if you're a schnitzle fan. The jaeger sauce is worth taking home by the quart (do they do that?), and while the rouladen is sometimes a bit dry, the pork shank is stellar. All their sausages are great, the sauerkraut is too, and the Bavarian style pretzels are a meal of their own. But in addition to that, they have a locavore menu comprising ingredients from the Gardiner region farms, which support a large farmer's market in New York City. So that means all that fancy produce and meat shows up in the Brauhaus specials. Flowers and watermelon radishes in your salad? Of course. Broiled rabbit wrapped in bacon? Every fall! Vegan entrees that rival the best of the Village? Always. And then there's the beer. Always fresh drafts, a mile of canned and bottled options, imported from around the world, but also local microbrews that run the gamut from delicious apricot-scented sour ale to the molasses and coffee notes of their schwarzbier. Every draft is memorable, and there's a dish it complements perfectly. The bartenders go out of their way to say hello and chit chat a bit, and will serve you at the bar if you can't wait for a table. You can't make reservations except by calling in the same day, so you may be getting to know that bartender pretty well. Which is good, because you'll want to come back year after year. The crowd is a mix of hikers, bikers, families, couples, locals, and longtime urban fans like me. Attire is casual, the atmosphere is more hunting cabin or country cottage than beer garden. The waiters and waitresses may be dressed like year-round Octoberfest, but you don't need a German last name, or even a European heritage of any kind, to be welcomed and treated like you belong. So, don't go there when I'm trying to get a seat, but other than that, go all the time and try everything! read more

What a disappointment. I called earlier in the day and asked if I needed a reservation. I was visiting Stormville flea market from Massachusetts and heard great things about this place. I said I would be there around 5. I was told no if you come by there is both outside and inside dining. I arrived at 5:15pm and was told very curtly that there are no tables inside and if you sit outside all you can order is Bratwurst. I said can you check if there any cancelations and asked if I could wait for a table. I was told no we are very busy can't you see and walked away. I won't return just based on their communication style. If I spoke to a customer like that at my place of employment I wouldn't be there very long. read more

Apart from that, service was amazing - very kids friendly as well! And this restaurant takes COVID seriously! Thank you!!! I stumbled across this place after hiking all hot July afternoon at minnewaska state park. With a ravaging belly screaming at me and an exhausted sun burned body negotiating with me, my wife and I stopped here. Wow! What luck. This place is de-li-cious! We had a burger (maybe the best I've had this year), and sausages (um.. yum!). Sauerkraut with bacon. Mustards. Pumpernickel breads with butter. Waitresses wearing dirndi and waiters wearing lederhosen. What?! The place feels like a lodge in the winter. A lot of meat. This is a meat place (granted I did see a veggie burger on the menu- I wouldn't come for that- and I like veggie burgers). The beers looked great, but I didn't have any as I had to drive back to the city. The prices were just right. The service was just right. The food was superlative. I will be back here. I stopped in Mountain Brauhaus yesterday, a late Sunday afternoon; it was very busy and clearly the people there were enthusiastic about it and many seemed to be repeat visitors. Upstate New York is home to many German eateries and this is what put me in mind of having German food as I wrapped up a weekend in the area before heading home. From the minute I walked in, it was a great experience. The hostesses were attentive and friendly amid a very busy afternoon. The bar staff was friendly and very well-trained, working efficiently and helping each other out. They were happy to explain menu items and to make good recommendations for drinks and food. If I lived in the area I would have no problem being a regular at the bar because of how great the service was. Whoever is in charge and training the waitstaff knows their stuff and I also noted it seemed the staff all seemed to be friends, which definitely helps them extend high quality service to patrons. The food is obviously fresh and presented beautifully. This made all the difference in showing how low grade many German restaurants actually are; Mountain Brauhaus clearly does not take customers' business for granted, no small feat in an area lush with tourists, where the temptation to become a tourist trap must be great. One other thing: the menu had some noteworthy specials specifically aimed at those who don't eat meat and which sounded just as excellent as the German traditional food I had. Some of these entrees were served near me and were presented nicely and looked delicious. They have wisely expanded their offerings in creative ways. The restaurant and the bathrooms are immaculately clean and well-maintained, and the old school look of the place was notable. Admittedly one's bill can easily add up with dinner, drinks, and (excellent in-house made) dessert, but you're happy to pay it because of the overall experience.
