Blink and you'll miss it, Mountain City is a small Chinese restaurant nestled in the heart of Holladay. It's located in a strip mall with plenty of parking, like all good Salt Lake ethnic joints. The menu is pretty varied and, drumroll please.....very vegetarian friendly. My herbivore self was so thrilled! Nearly every category from fried rice to egg foo young can be made for vegetarians. Seeing all the options available to me had me swooning. I've only done takeout, but the inside is hella low key and casual. Nothing too out of the ordinary, but stepping inside offered a nice reprieve from the summer heat. Staff here have been chill every time, and they work very fast and efficiently. A lot of times I worry that with fast preparation will come lower quality of food. Not the case here, they are timely and delicious. Perfect merger! Nothing here is out of this world amazing, but it's all either good and/or great. Big up to Mountain City, and I highly recommend them to ya'll in the Holladay and Millcreek areas. read more

I am so bummed I just found this place a week before I move. I have lived in Murray for the last two years and have been trying to find good Chinese food in the area to no avail. I had a serious hankering for Chinese tonight and decided to do a search for nearby places and this little gem popped up. After checking through some reviews it was a no brainer that we would head up to Holladay to scope it out. I can't believe we never saw this place with how frequently we visit Rice Basil right across the street. It's a little restaurant in a strip mall and upon entering I'm immediately taken back to my home town neighborhood faves back in NYC. As soon as we walked in the door the sweet owner (Kien) greeted us and sat us down. She brought us waters and asked if it was our first time and when we said yes she said she could tell and proceeded to chat with us about how my fiancé met and about her family. I loved seeing her interact with the regulars she knew by name whether they were sitting down to eat or having take out. She gave suggestions for her favorite owns and even brought us a free small cup of egg drop soup to try. This was such a pleasant surprise and it was so different from any I've had. It was like a chicken middle soup with the noodles and vegetables sans chicken and with the egg and scrumptious crispy noodles added! I was so hungry and it was a great little start to the meal to cut the hunger edge off. We ordered cream cheese wontons to start and these were fantastic! Impeccably cooked.. folded into their shapes over the cream cheese centers with the perfect crunch and the sweet and sour sauce to dip with it just made it even more delicious. For my entree I ordered the sweet and sour chicken as it's my go-to when I want to test out the caliber of Chinese food. I usually order the sauce on the side because most places over do the sauce and it's a bright red thick gooey sauce but I didn't this time. To my surprise the chicken came out in breaded chicken breast form with a light golden orange color sauce drizzled over the pieces and topped with a sprinkling of sesame seeds. I placed a scoop of the steamed rice on my plate (which by the way was not too sticky at all. It was just right) and then added a few of the strips on top followed by a drizzle of sauce. I have trouble chewing food with my braces so I had to cut the pieces down but the chicken was not dry and the breading was not overwhelming at all. Even though I was expecting the usual fried nugget style chicken, this was such a pleasant and delicious alternative. I made my fiancé try it and he loved it too. My fiancé ordered the General Tso's chicken per Kien's suggestion and he loved it. He said it's normally a dish that is spicy but this one wasn't spicy at all. You could see the red pepper flakes in the sauce so I didn't want to try it (spice wimp here) but Kien insisted I try some of the sauce on my rice and a bite of the chicken and it was good. I could taste the spice but it was not overpowering because the rest of the flavors complimented the dish so well. We had an amazing experience. Service was remarkable (Kien is one amazing worker running the business, answering the phone, and serving customers in the restaurant). Food was on point. It was the best I have had in the Murray/Holladay area. Bathrooms were relatively clean. I will definitely be back and I will be sure to refer to friends. read more

Mountain City Restaurant is a pretty typical Chinese restaurant. They have a wide variety of entrees on the menu and their prices are reasonable. We went here for lunch a few weeks ago with a big group, so the waitress suggested we ordered family-style so we could share. That turned out to be a great idea. There was only five of us but we ended up with six entrees and more food then we honestly knew what to do with. Food coma anyone? You practically had to roll us out the door! The kung pow chicken, yellow curry with chicken, beef with broccoli, and walnut chicken were all good. To describe our waitress as eccentric would be an understatement. The older, little Chinese lady that served our table was something else. She scolded me about not having more vegetables from one of the dishes we ordered; filled our plates with more food without our permission; and forced us to eat hot peppers! She definitely made the Mountain City Restaurant a unique and hilarious dining experience. If you go here for a meal I hope you have a chance to meet her, she was great. read more

We had not been back to Mountain City for many years, mostly because of its location. . During pandemic we are running out place to have good Chinese take out. Not surprisingly the owner has changed since our last visit many years back. We ordered two dinner combinations $11.95 each). Each came with rice (white or hame fried). Soup (hot sour or egg drop), plus egg roll and cream cheese wonton. We chose Mongolian Beef and Tofu with Vegetable as our entrees. We never understand why Chinese restaurants serve Cream Cheese Wonton . other than that everything was very good. My partner especially appreciated that ham fried rice was not oily which is a common problem among Chinese fast food establishments. Although hot sour soup was not a typical, but it was good. Both entrees were very authentic and tasty. Do note, the beef and soup were on the hot (spicy) side. The food was good. The price was really reasonable. We will be back! read more

This place was a find! It is a little dive in an old strip mall. The owner is quite the character, and suggested a few of her favorites to try. My spouse (vegetarian) and I (vegan) are always on the lookout for restaurants that can accommodate our dietary needs and Mountain City did not disappoint. Always double before you order, but I sent them a message about their tofu entrees and they are not made with meat, dairy or egg. We tried the curry tofu, General Tso tofu and salt baked tofu-- all amazing, and all vegan! I think the salt baked tofu and curry tofu over white rice were my favorite. I'll come back soon to try the other entrees that use tofu. (Note: we placed a carry out order so the photo I'm posting is not representative of what your plate will look like! Been going here for years. A Holladay fixture thats been around for many years and is a treasure of the community. Consistently great food. Very fresh. I really had high hopes for this place. We drove by here and it had all the setup to be the perfect little Chinese restaurant. It looks like one of those hole-in-the-wall places you find in downtown LA. I ordered some of the go to Chinese dishes pretty simple to make and tell you how well the restaurant is able to perform. They were recommended very good on Google and Yelp so I was surprised when the dishes did not turn out like the Chinese food I has a custom to. The orange chicken came out very soggy and I really wanted to tell them to fry it extra hard. The rice was okay but by no means outstanding. It was well portions so if you are looking for big portions of food this is a good spot to go. It definitely looks clean inside and the lady at the front was very nice. I would definitely come back here in probably a year and maybe try another dish to see if it was just an off day. read more

I am sorry but I do not see what the fuss is all about. Let's start with the very poor choices they have on special for lunch. Why so few? I asked if I could substitute a different chicken meal and I was told that it would cost more. I said okay. So I ended up paying $10.00ish for my lunch after I added soup. A lot of other places include soup in their lunch price and charge $7-8. After I ordered my meal to go the lady in front brought me some water which was nice. Then I heard the yelling coming from the back. Another lady, or guy in the back was screaming at another employee in Chinese. It was so loud that had it been happening in my neighborhood people would have called the police. What I thought was so funny is that the lady in front kept going about her business as if nothing was going on. She got some guests some soup and bagged up my meal all the while I thought I was going to get to see a full on remake of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Unfortunately for me, my order was ready before any of the real action took place. Back to my lunch. The chicken looked really crispy (good crispy) but lacked any sauce on top. All the sauce was at the bottom of the dish and was very thin and watery. I am used to a thick coating of sauce that sticks to the chicken and doesn't drown the pieces at the bottom the dish and make them super soggy. The vegetables looked fresh and if it wasn't for the blackest hair I have ever seen resting on a slice of onion I probably would have tried to eat them. I still at the chicken though because the hair wasn't touching it and honestly, it was not that good. The crispy pieces, when dipped into the sauce were good but the overly mushy pieces were not very appetizing at all. The steamed rice was good at least. I ordered the Hot and Sour soup as well and I thought the flavor was okay but I had to drink it out of my cup. Don't worry, I got three fortune cookies but no spoon for my soup. Not worth the 10 bucks I paid. I can appreciate the loyalty people have for this place but there are far better choices around. read more

I am Chinese myself and I've lived in the US for almost 10 years now. I would say Mountain City is the one of the best Chinese restaurant I've ever tried in America. Their food is lighter than food served in other Chinese restaurants and their shrimps are very big and fresh, they are not cheap shrimps at all. The server was the boss, a tiny and older Chinese lady. She is very friendly, kind and sweet. When she found out my husband was from Indonesia, she prepared extra hot chili sauce and chili for my husband (because Indonesian eat very spicy food) Besides that, she gave him some sweet and sour soup to try! Before we left, she gave us tons ( yes, tons!) of fortune cookies to take home. She's really really sweet, and she offers excellent service! I just went back to Mountain City for the first time in two years. The interim food was not that great, but now the food is fantastic again. The chef worked for a very great restaurant and he and his daughter now run the show and the food is wonderful. Great prices along with the great food! Both lunch specials I have had since my earlier review have been very good - flavor and portions very fair and filling. Egg rolls have a great flavor, I need to add. We ordered takeout: the House Chow Fun and Coconut Chicken. Both of the dishes were delicious. The coconut chicken replaces the walnuts with coconut. So it is a breaded chicken, with a sweet sauce. Very tasty is if you like Walnut Shrimp or Walnut Chicken. The Chow Fun was a large portion and very good. We will be going back. read more
