Saw that we have a hidden little gem that's on the Yelp's Nationwide Top 100 List, right in our neighborhood; within walking distance, in fact! This was a must-try, so my husband and I went there for a quick dinner one night. Parked and entered through the back, and to our surprise, the place was buzzing with customers, everyone happily chatting and seemingly in great moods! We ordered a crispy pork sandwich to share, along with sides of mac and cheese, fried artichokes and a cucumber mint lemonade to drink. WOW!! I was happily satisfied with the entire dinner! The owners were great; talkative with everyone, explaining their menu and how they got to be where they are now, on Yelp's top 100!! They even let us sample one of the weekly specials - some kind of chicken in a sauce of some sort that was TO DIE FOR. The turkey was not dry, there was a good portion size, and the bread is very chewy. However I was looking for a little more boldness especially regarding Peruvian flavors. The lemonade on the other hand has enough oomph for your whole day. It is very tangy and refreshing. The alfajores, or the cookies were good in general. I get excited when I eat at a new place (new to me) and tend to go overboard as I want to try it all, so I ended up ordering the roasted carnitas bowl with a fried egg and cheese, potato balls and zucchini sticks. They were all delicious! The carnitas were perfectly moist, the potato balls were delicious alone but with the sauce they came in they were exquisite, and the zucchini sticks were seasoned deliciously and ACTUALLY crispy! Overall, I thought the sandwich could have a little bit more flavor as I felt like the whole sandwich was a little bland. The aioli sauce was delicious and I wish there was more of that sauce or more flavor throughout the whole sandwich. I shared a combo with my boyfriend which included that sandwich, mac & cheese, and a lemonade. I believe the whole thing came to a little bit about $14 and it definitely filled us both up. I've been meaning to go check out this place for months. Last week, my friend took me here for a night out. The menu looked delicious and we were unsure what to get. But I choose to get a sandwich, without the bread, which they call a platter. They let me sample the mac and cheese to make sure it's not too spicy - it was just right! My friend also got a sandwich as a platter and we shared an order of Yucca and green beans. We sampled the cucumber mint and the pineapple drinks, they were both amazing. She got one and I got the other. Depending on what you get here determines the price, it could be under $11/person. I had crusty, toasted ciabatta with portobello red pepper, zucchini, Roma tomato, sweet onion, artichoke, roasted pepper spread, and balsamic drizzle sandwich with tropical slaw as a side, consisting of white and red cabbage, fresh green apple, dried cranberries and Virginia peanuts and another side of roasted corn, zucchini, and smoked paprika. Habenero aioli sauce topped on everything. And pickled beets to cool off if needed. I ended up putting the slaw on the sandwich. The sandwich was really, really, really good. I could have had another after I finished. The hot sauce was very good. Just the right amount of heat. I want to return to try more sandwiches. This sandwich was a little hard to keep intact and got messy, but the flavors eventually came together... when I could get all of them in my mouth with the help of a fork. Also quite good. I came here on the way back from Santa Barbara. I love Peruvian food and saw the outstanding yelp reviews and had to come visit. We went on a Sunday afternoon and I had the lomo saltado sandwich ($11), small mac and cheese ($2.50), and cucumber lemonade ($3). The lemonade was tasty and refreshing. The mac and cheese was good but not my favorite. The cheesy flavors were a lot milder than I thought they'd be. The highlight was the sandwich! I love lomo saltado but never had it in a sandwich. IT WORKS! The meat was tender and flavorful, the red onions were sweet and juicy, the bread was freshly made, and the french fries sealed the deal. I have no problem driving from Glendale to Thousand Oaks because it was that amazing! The place is small but I read that they are expanding in the next couple months. I love Mouthful Eatery and the times I have gone with my coworkers has been awesome; however, the one time I picked up food for my family to enjoy for the first time... it ended up being rather disappointing. I had been excited to introduce my husband to it especially but he wasn't impressed. We visited on 7/10/2015 around 2pm a little later after the typical lunch crowd so it wasn't busy, I had called in the food as a pick-up order. I was glad to see the remodel had completed and the expanded dining area affords more room. I don't know why, though, the food was not up to par like it usually is. Been here a handful of times over the years and I don't quite get the hype. Maybe I'm ordering the wrong things. In my most recent visit, my blackened cod sandwich was ok but quite bland, which surprised me given it looked pretty good. I ate it but it wasn't pleasurable, and at $12 was not a bargain. My son had the ham sandwich and a side of mac and cheese. He didn't like the mac and cheese. I tried it. It also had no taste. It went uneaten for $3.50 wasted. He also didn't like his ham sandwich. He said the bread was soggy and there was too much going on in the sandwich. The ginger lemonade is good. So overall for me I give it a 3, which as Yelp says, means "A-OK" i.e. I'm willing to go back and try other things. Perhaps I'll experience better luck with a salad. read more

First let me say that being on Yelp's Best 100 list doesn't mean the restaurant will be a 5-star dining experience; sometimes a place will earn it's spot via reviews because it is a beloved food trailer or strip mall ethnic food (in a neighborhood where ethnic food = Italian, Chinese or sushi), and it doesn't hurt to have an engaged and charismatic owner. I think the last two are the case here. I was excited to learn there was a Peruvian place in Thousand Oaks, having been to Peru and discovering the wonderful flavors of Peruvian "street food". The sandwiches are where it's at here, they are made with quality meats and delicious sauces. The sides are good and very reasonably priced for the portion. I tried the mac & cheese (It was good, but nothing out-of-the-ordinary), crispy zucchini sticks (a nice healthier substitute for french fries and the tasty fried yucca. It was good but I expected way more for the price and boast this place has. I have tried authentic Peruvian lomo saltado and this sandwich doesn't live up to it sorry. It was lacking flavor. Next I'll try the pulled pork. Parking: they have street parking in front, very small parking lot out back. You may find parking near park right next to their parking structure but when I went it was full. PS they have picnic tables out back where their parking is. When you walk through the door, you feel not like you just walked in from Thousand Oaks Boulevard, but somewhere more like Santa Monica Boulevard... For us carnivorous folk, they have such a great menu and they execute it incredibly well--juicy and well-seasoned steak on a fresh out of the oven ciabatta bun, lightly fried artichoke hearts, and haricots verts with a home-made teriyaki-esque sauce--everything was excellent. The kiddo loved her mac and cheese with chicken and a crust supplied by crumbled potato chips, and another hit was the pulled pork sandwich. For the non-carnivorous of us, there are many options as well and as long as you don't mind the preponderance of pork-related decor and the fact that many piggies have sacrificed to feed Mouthful's patrons--I would argue their sacrifice has not been in vain. If you can get past that, I bet you'll be glad you gave it a shot. I get the combo meal with a pork shoulder sandwich a lemonade and a side. The meat is moist and is perfectly balanced by the sweet potato. The cucumber mint lemonade is refreshing, and delicious, and may be on the sweeter side of things, so I like to add some water to dilute it. I have tried the mac and cheese, the coleslaw, the green beans and the roasted corn. The sides are not that exciting, but if I had to do it all over, I would go with the slaw. The interior is hip and small. There is parking in the rear. There is only one bathroom, and you have to turn the handle up when you are trying to get out. They should fix that because I've seen people struggle with that more than once. They have coffee from Integlligencia, which I hear is some of the best coffee. A small little spot with heart and a unique taste. They have a Peruvian inspired menu and a chef that is a real foodie, I know because I saw him preparing food with great care. My observations helping me come to this conclusion include the fact there is so much packed into each sandwich. The albondigo sandwich had lots of great flavors that compliment eachother. The tomato sauce works well with the pesto and if you add the pickled cabbage, you get a great taste that combines very well. It didn't taste dry like some turkey meatballs either. The cheese sauce that comes with the fries didn't pair well for me. It's neither sweet or savory, being too subtle to have any meaningful impact on the perfectly seasoned fries. I thought the artichoke sauce worked a little better. It's yogurty, but not sour. The lemonade was also freshing on this warm fall day.
