Discovered this place by chance through a Groupon deal ($39 for an eye exam and $125 credit for frame & lens). The office is easily located and near my place of residence so decided to go for it despite not really needing it (extra pair). I really wanted to give this place 5 stars, but my overall experience after everything is a negative one. When I say 5 stars, it's because upon my initial visit my impressions were very positive. The office is clean, modern, and the staff are friendly, attentive, and professional. The eye exam went quickly and the Dr. was very knowledgeable and answered my questions satisfactorily. Afterwards, upon selecting the frame the staff was very helpful and patient in this area. Where my review turned negative is what I would call their business practice. I was leaving for overseas as I don't live in the US any longer and mentioned my schedule, visited Thursday and leaving the following Wednesday. They assured me that my glasses would be ready by Tuesday, and said they would try to rush it further and get it ready by Monday. I thought "Great!" I'm sold. Even went and bought a nicer frame (the plastic slims $220). Well, Monday came and the glasses weren't ready. Not a big deal. Tuesday came and they said the fitment was bad so they needed to take it back and it would be ready Wednesday morning (slightly annoyed, but not a big deal). Came Wednesday at noon and they told me it's not ready, another hour. Returned a 1.5 hours later and did the fitting. At this point I was in pretty much of a rush as I was leaving shortly. As I tried the glasses on I noticed the frame and lenses were...loose and shaky. The staff said that was normal for this type of frame cause it was light. At this point, I couldn't really complain as I had to board the plane in a few hours. Well, coming back to HK I visited two other optometry businesses. Both said the lenses were too small for the frame. Basically what MPO first told me about the fitment, I suppose they never corrected it and tried to pass it off the poor fitment by telling me that's how it was supposed to be. What also was frustrating was the bridge on the frame started coming loose, which leads me to believe the quality of the frames aren't the greatest. In the end I had to purchase another pair of lenses, but at least fitment is perfect now. The business here even changed the screw on the bridge. The glasses now are fine. Moral of the story, MPO don't make promises on products you can't deliver and don't lie to customers and tell them that's how it's supposed to fit when you clearly know on your end you guys failed to deliver a quality product. read more

I have given this company a second chance after my son had a very bad experience with them. I purchased the "eye retainers" for my son to correct the curvature of his eyes and will no longer be required to wear contact lenses nor glasses. What was not explained was that he only has a certain number of visits. He used up all his visits without getting a resolution for this $1,000 purchase. He never had his issue resolved. I gave them a second chance by getting a pair of my Ray Ban sunglasses whose lens got a scratched, ti be replaced at this office. I specifically asked if the replacement lens would still have the logo. They assured me that yes it will be there. When I picked up my glasses a day prior to my trip, they gave me my glasses without the logo and told me that it cost more than what I paid for. That was not explained to me at the time they were taking my order. That's last time I'll even think of using them. They come up short of their promises. read more

Came here back in February and again a few months later. While the initial visit wasn't bad, the subsequent visits make me very reluctant to recommend this optometry as a first or second choice. First off, Dr. Lam was just OK. I have been helped by Dr. Lam twice, once to get my prescription checked and again to check how my contact prescription was working. He was straightforward in his diagnosis, but nothing that was above and beyond that would warrant a "highly recommended" recommendation. Additionally, Kimberly at the front office was very helpful every visit. She was concise with her work, willing to help and prompt to get things done. My biggest issue was with Robert. Initially, he was very eager to help me pick out frames for glasses. I told him what style I was looking for, he brought out a few pairs for me to try, and I decided on a pair with his help. My issues with MPO arose when one of the nose pads on my glasses broke at the metal base about 3 months after receiving them. I went on the Ray Ban website to see what to do, and was told to return to my retailer for them to file a warranty claim. I spoke to Rob about my situation and he told me he would get back to me later that day. I ended up waiting two business days to get a response back, not even a courtesy call to tell me he did not have an answer but would get back to me later. When I finally did get a response, he informed me the glasses were not under warranty, but what they could do is order the same pair with them and they will charge half of the $200 retail price tag. Unwilling to pay for a second pair, I explored other options. Going back to the Ray Ban website, I found a link to file an online claim with their parent company, Luxottica, if I couldn't reach my retailer. I did that, and received confirmation that my glasses WERE under warranty. Which begs the question of did Robert really try to file a claim for me, or was he just trying to swindle me out of buying another pair of frames from them? I trusted MPO to help me with my situation, and instead of receiving honest help, I feel I was almost played into giving more money to MPO. To conclude, while my initial experience with MPO was mediocre, the incident with Robert at the end has made me seriously doubt their credibility to serve their customers with integrity, and I would be cautious before doing business with them. read more

Great optometry. Got a LivingSocial deal for $49-- which included free examination + $150 towards prescription glasses. What a steal. Their frames fit Asian faces!!! Just what I needed. I got this brand called Konishi Lite. The Dr. is well informed and goes out of his way to make everything make sense to his patients. I have astigmatism in both eyes and never knew what that was about until now. His wife who works the front is really sweet and assisted me w/ finding a pair of frames for my face. I am lost for words the amount of positive energy was in this place. Everyone welcomed me from the receptionists to Dr. Scott Lam himself. He told me everything about what is going on with my eyes. He broke down the problems and gave legitimate solutions. They were thorough with the procedure and they took their time with me. I had many questions that they answered. I also got received my prescription in the same day. It was just a very very good experience. We are using the amazon voucher $300 for 2 pairs of prescribed glasses and sunglasses, and their prices are so high that a regular unheard brand name glasses cost you $140 and up and the basic plastic lens cost you $ 175 with anti glare and up, that means a pair of eyeglasses will cost you $315. So after we picked 2 frames and after the $300 voucher, we have to pay more than $400. That is really ridiculous! Finally we quit. It is an unpleasant experience! read more

So...after careful consideration and accompanying my husband on his visit, I decide to make an appointment. I made an appointment through the MPO website and someone called me the next day to confirm the appointment. Their service was exceptional and Dr. Lam is very thorough with his examination and cared enough to explain what he was doing. I love it when a doctor explains to me what he or she is doing so I have a better understanding about my condition and treatment. What impressed me so much was not only the place was nice, clean and the staff was very professional, but that this visit wasn't like any doctors visit I had been on. There were two things that really stuck out to me. One, I was not aware that the contact lenses that loved so much was actually hurting my eyes. I had been wearing this brand for years and after Acuvue had taken it off the market, I still managed to get my hands on some. Obviously, no one explained to me why that happened. My old eye doctor just switched me to Oasys, which I didn't like at all. IF my old doc had told me that this particular brand would cause scaring on my eyes, I would have stopped using it immediately. I was thrilled that that Dr. Lam explain to me what would happen to my eye if I didn't switch to another brand of contact lenses. He understood why I'd love that particular brand of contacts and didn't force me to change but with the information I received from him, I was happy to switch out my lenses. Although, change is difficult, I tried on the Oasys again but didn't feel any discomfort this time around. I was happy to make the change. :) Secondly.... He also brought up something I didn't even mention to him, which was my chronic dry eyes. I had been suffering from this for YEARS-at least 10 years. I just thought I had to live with it. None of my past eye doctors have ever taken the time to see if there was a reason for this. Turns out, this is a common problem and the treatment is quite simple. He explain again, thoroughly and even showed me a video of my eyes on why they were so dry on Youtube. I loved it, now I understand not only why but that there is a treatment. If left untreated, I'll really suffer from this for the rest of my life. I am looking forward to the treatment. Some would think that he's just trying to up-sell me. I don't believe that. I've seen many doctors and None have ever found a solution for me. I am very grateful and looking forward to taking care of this issue for good. Dr. Lam truly cares about his patients and obviously LOVES his job and this is his true calling. ; Go see Dr Lam and he'll take good care of you. His staff is great as well. NOT RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I came here to get my vision tested and get eyeglasses. When I picked up my glasses, my vision was blurry and I said something may not be right. They told me that I have to get used to them and to give it a week to a week and a half. After a couple weeks passed, I called and told them the same thing. Then they said to give it two to three weeks!!!!! Why would it take that long??? That's ridiculous. After one month I came back in to the office to get my vision retested because I thought I had gotten the wrong prescription. After a quick test of the glasses, they told me that my prescription was put in the glasses UPSIDE DOWN!!!! When I asked if they check the glasses once they get them from the manufacturer, they said "usually". Does this mean other people could be wearing glasses with an incorrect prescription? That seems dangerous. They never offered to compensate me for what I had gone through(headaches every day and blurry vision for one month). Once I complained a bit, they offered to give me a discount on sunglasses which would still cost $250. So basically they did absolutely nothing for me. All they care about is upselling. Don't give a place like this your business. I'm going back to Linden's in Pasadena from now on. I feel so screwed :( read more

I was highly recommended by some of my co workers about Dr. Lam and his staff, but I was also highly WARNED by them of the Dr's wife. Here's why: PROS: Dr.Lam; he was awesome. Totally took the time to advise me of all my health concerns and answered all my questions and then some. I totally expected a rush job like most eye doctors, but not Dr.Lam I felt he genuinely cared and loves his job. The staff; they were super courteous and friendly. The nurse that helped me was too adorable and explained my insurance to me to the T. CONS: Not enough sunglasses selection and not enough name brand glasses to choose from, they are also unable to order ones they do not carry, as told to me by the manager, which leads me to why my co worker WARNED me of the Dr's wife. One of my co worker was there for her exam, she told me of the annoying manager there, (she later found out was the Dr's wife). When my co worker was there she felt as though the Dr.'s wife was very unprofessional "hanging" with her friends and being very loud and through out her wait time, the manager carried on with her friends, their conversation was at time inappropriate for mixed company and it was hard not to over-hear their conversation. I too experienced a similar encounter. When I went for my exam, my 1st impression was, wow totally different from many Optometry offices in Monterey Park. I commented on the decor to nurse and was interrupted by a girl sitting in the waiting area (whom I found out that she was the manager), I was told by the manager it her idea to change the decor because she didn't want it to look too much like a cluttered "Asian" medical office. I was surprised at first but I soon realized what my co worker was talking about. Apparently the manager gets visits from friends and family often, because the day I was there she had her cousins visiting her and I too experienced the loud and chatty behavior from her. Thank goodness I didn't have to wait too long to be seen my Dr.Lam, because I don't know how long I'd be able to endure her behavior. After my exam I was directed to select my glasses, I was excited, because I hadn't had a new pair in a long time. As was being helped by the nurses there, the manager totally butted in and began to assist me and I was some what annoyed but I guess there was a reason. When I finally picked out my glasses she seemed like she didn't know how to ring me up and kept shoving my card to the other nurse there. I also noticed one nurse getting fed up and she just walked out leaving the other nurse there. Recently another co worker of ours went to see Dr.Lam per our referral and he said he experienced the same thing. He was there and apparently the manager had just return from Korea and she expressed to some family members how she hated Korea and the people there, he was extremely offended and so was I since we are both married to Koreans. I decided to write this review because I felt I really want to refer friends and family to Dr.Lam but hesitate due to the bad experiences by 3 different people. read more

I've worn glasses most of my life and went to MPO for a regular eye exam. MPO is located in a shopping plaza, so it's really easy to find. The office staff was flexible and accommodating of my schedule (which isn't easy). The office is bright and clean with cute little pieces of art on the walls. Dr. Lam is probably the only doctor I've met that didn't feel like he was 'doctoring' at me. He takes an interest in his patients and listens to what they are saying. As cheesy as it sounds, I feel like Dr. Lam and the MPO staff actually care about taking care of people, rather than just cranking out numbers. Dr. Lam introduced me to Paragon lenses. They are hard, nighttime lenses you sleep in. You take them out in the morning, and you don't need to wear contacts or glasses during the day. I had never heard of Paragon before, but I really hate glasses, so I was excited to try the lenses. He gave me a realistic idea of what I could expect from them. Since my eyes aren't great, he informed me that the lenses might not give me 20/20 vision, but they would make it so I didn't need to wear daytime contacts or glasses. The lens fitting process was pretty easy. He tried different lenses on my eyes to see which ones I needed. I was nervous about having someone putting things in my eyes, but Dr. Lam made sure I knew what was going on from start to finish. The lenses are rigid but he was careful to make sure my eyes were comfortable while he was fitting them. I must have asked him 100 questions and he answered them all thoroughly. He's professional but also relatable and easy to understand. The staff at MPO is incredibly friendly and helpful. They taught me how to insert the lenses and how to remove them. They called me during my trial period with the lenses to see how they were working. They also checked to see if I wanted to come back and try another pair and set me up with a 2nd fitting. I like the flexibility Paragon lenses give me. I can drive without glasses now. I went snorkeling without having to worry about whether I'd be able to see anything. I can pick whatever sunglasses I want. I don't have to switch between regular glasses and prescription sunglasses all day. I also hike and snowboard a lot. In the past, I had to choose between blurry vision during sports, or risk breaking my glasses. Now I don't. For me, financially, these lenses make a lot more sense. I was spending around $600 bucks every year on eyewear (regular glasses + prescription sunglasses). The first few days of wearing the lenses is a little uncomfortable while you get used to them. After that you just put them in and go to sleep, you don't really notice them. The only con with Paragon lenses is if you forget to put them in before bed. I've done it once or twice. If you do that, you probably have to wear your regular glasses the next day. But I completely love the lenses. I'm glad I found MPO because none of my previous optometrists ever mentioned Paragon lenses, and they are seriously life changing. Great service, friendly staff, and great, quality products! I've been going there since the business was located in Monterey Park. Their equipment is state of the art and kept very clean, unlike other filthy places. I like that it is located near Triple A where I conduct my DMV business. If you're hungry, there is a hot dog place across the street. If you feel like getting a good workout, there is an LA Fitness across as well. If you feel like watching a movie, you can take a little stroll to the local theater. Alhambra sure is a great neighborhood. I almost wished I lived there. :) read more

I found out about MPO through a friend who sent me a deal they were having through livingsocial.com. My glasses were recently stolen so I was in need of new glasses quickly and even though the office was some distance from my home the deal they were having was too good to pass up. I showed up early so I could look around at their selection of frames. I have been wearing glasses for over forty years so a good selection was very important to me. Needless to say the selection was great and the prices were very reasonable, so before I even saw the Dr I was happy with the office. I didn't expect to be SO pleased with Dr Scott Lam as I was, I suppose because I've seen a lot of Optometrists over the years, even working for an Ophthalmologist for a few years and they can be . . . well . . . annoying. Dr Scott was wonderful, patient, thorough, and very informative. I left there knowing exactly how my prescription would work for my eyes. I came to get some new glasses because my old ones were worn and falling off my face constantly. Everyone was so nice and professional (which for some reason is hard to find these days). Got the exam done, dilation to check eye health, and a personal consultation. They told me that my glasses would be ready in a week (They actually got there sooner). As I was about to leave the doctor gave me some dark shades to put over my eyes to protect them from the sun. I've gotten eye dilation before, and my old doctor never even mentioned that the sun could damage my eyes while the pupils were widened. I came here on a recommendation, I called and my insurance covered some of the cost including an eye exam. Long story short I still ended up paying a bunch of money, my glasses took forever and the contacts I got aren't comfortable at all. I mentioned this but I was told it was because I was new to contacts, instead of being offered a different type of contact. i needed an eye exam to update my eye prescription because i wanted to purchase my glasses online. i bought a groupon for the eye exam and $ towards new glasses. When all said n done, this place is great. Dr. Lam and his staff are very professional and emailed me my prescription and were not pushy during their sales pitch to buy their glasses. I purchased a Groupon worth $200 towards a pair of glasses. I picked out a frame which was priced at $295, and was ready to purchase. I usually fill my lenses online and had no intention of buying lenses. But they told me that this Groupon is ONLY valid if you purchase frames AND lenses. With the purchase of the frames and lenses, I ended up paying $300. I then found my $295 frames online for $120 at a variety of online glasses retailers. Really disappointed that they would overprice their frames and require a Groupon to make the price go down to retail. read more
