I've gotten take out from this place twice now this year and both times it has left much to be desired. Their fried rice is flavorless and we found a hair in it this last time. The tempura veggies weren't cooked long enough so the batter was doughy and too thick. I tried the Lo Mein and it honestly just tastes like a TV dinner. I had to add so much more flavor to it. My daughter and I were excited to try this restaurant based on the stars it received. We were very very disappointed. My daughter ordered Orange Chicken. That tasted more like sweet and sour chicken. I ordered Moo Shoo pork. I was surprised to find that the "Chinese pancakes" were actually corn tortillas!! The typical wrap that comes with Moo Shoo pork is light and airy. Let me tell you a tale filled with lies and unfulfilled dreams. A tale so sad that it ruined a young yelper's optimistic evening and brought misery to his kingdom. Our story begins on a random Thursday morning as our Yelper begins thinking about a dish made of fried rice and vegetables. As the day continues his longing for this rice dish increases exponentially. After work a call from his girlfriend that she is sick and really want a bowl of Pho! It's a sign! A sign from the gods that our Yelper will get his fried rice and take care of his unfortunate girlfriend all in one delightful evening. And the kingdom rejoices! Unfortunately the kingdom is in Krum so it is a long and arduous journey to Mr. Chopsticks in rush hour traffic. But fried rice awaits so the journey must continue. Our Yelper pulls to the drive through excited to finally be near what he has longed for all day. But alas, he is met by an unkind soul with little people skills and told to drive forward. Our Yelper sits an additional 15 minutes in his 2014 chariot, approximately 15 minutes longer than the announced wait time on the phone. The unkind staff member brings out the food without an apology for the wait or any sign of condolences. No wishing for a good night or a safe journey home. Just a handing over of the bag and a quick return to her building of employment. The long journey home begins with the smell of food filling the chariot and the longing for fried rice continuing to grow. Some extra horse power might have been used, and a few stop sign rolled through in an attempt to devour the awaiting feast. Arriving back at his kingdom, he rushes in and begins to unpack the bag of food. Soup, noodles for soup, veggies for soup, and then the terror. The bag is empty and no rice is to be found. Our Yelper, with a broken heart, sits and contemplates what to do. Journey all the way back to Mr. Chopsticks? But he has already traveled so far! A phone call is made to Chopsticks to discuss with the manager of this Asian style place of business. A quick plea of what has happened is made and the manager continues to tell him to look for a red box, but no red box is to be found. Our Yelper decides to ask for a refund, but is told that a refund cannot be given! Excuse me! No refund is possible? This sounds like a fictitious plot to secure more money at a later date! Our Yelper is told that the only option is that they can take his name and receive a 'free' meal on his next visit. Free meal! This meal has already been paid for, it's not free! There is no promise of a free spring roll to repay the time and suffering. No free dessert to repay the gas that will be used on another visit. No free gift card to alleviate my pain of spending an entire day looking forward to a fried rice dish and now having to eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Curses! The entire night is ruined and nothing is done to make up for it except lies and a quick dismissal. Sadly, this is not my first negative dealing with Mr. Chopsticks. This 1 star is not given based off of one visit. I always hope that the next visit will be better so I have delayed reviewing this place. Well we went here for my boyfriends birthday, and were very disappointed.(Not to mention we informed them going into the restaurant that it was his birthday) Everyone else ordered fried rice and stuff and received their food in a timely fashion. My boyfriend and I sat there and waited for his poke bowl and my calepeno roll to come and about 45 minutes later the waiter arrived with our food. At around the 30 minute mark the waiter had uttered an apology about some sort of mix up. As someone who works in a restaurant, if making that food was my job, and I did it every day, it would not take me 45 minutes to make them, even if I had to do them twice. I've been to Mr. Chopsticks a few times now (this first time this year and in a very long time) I feel like they have a lot of variety in their menu, but so far the stuff I've tried hasn't impressed me. I've had the pad Thai and pad see ew so far and both are okay, nothing special. I got both with chicken and I felt like chicken especially in the pad see ew was a tad over cooked but still good just could have been better. The noodles in the pad see ew was different from other pad see ew I've tried, it was a little bit more chewy then I wanted. My friend got the egg roll and I wish I did too because that thing was huge and it looked perfectly cooked with a good crunch that I could tell from seeing him eat it haha. General Tso's chicken was the best item ordered, although the serving size is quite less than the photos that people have posted. This place is SICK, and not in a good way. I've always grew up eating Chinese food because of my culture and when I was craving it, this was the place that popped into my head. I did have this biased opinion coming into the restaurant. I expected the food to be Americanized, Panda Express-ish, and not true authentic Chinese food. However, when I got my food, I did not prepare myself for what I was about to eat. I ordered Kung Pao Chicken. The sauce was a hot mess, watered down, and bland. My friend ordered Chicken and Broccoli and the broccoli looked like it was just steamed, tossed around in a wok for a bit, and served. Mr. Chopsticks is a true local Denton Classic. Not to be missed, despite whatever follows in this review or all the others posted here. Yes, it's a bit quirky and frequently less-than-stellar in all categories (food, service, atmosphere). Expect to be served by a pierced and tattooed UNT drop-out with questionable personal hygiene, tobacco breath, and a dazed hipster countenance. However, you can also expect the service to be consistently prompt, attentive, efficient, yet refreshingly unpretentious. Expect the food to be fresh, healthy, reasonably priced, well portioned, slightly above-average for Asian-Fusion, but occasionally inconsistent and certainly nothing to write home about. It's not legit Asian by any stretch, but it's always fresh, tasty, satisfying, and interesting. Expect the atmosphere to be loud, weird, no frills, not-so-clean (but not "dirty"), yet fully functional and somehow perfectly paired with the rest of the experience. You'll find everyone from sweaty landscape guys on lunch-break to college administrators in business attire, but mostly college students and their friends on a budget. Set your expectations accordingly and you will find Mr. Chopsticks to be the real deal... a friendly, affordable, Denton Classic, which is like a microcosm of the city itself. read more

Worst restaurant maybe. FOH is good though, really friendly and attentive but the food is horrible. When I had Pho, it came with spaghetti noodles and chunks of tough cubed steak in a soup broth that had no taste. I think the soup was water with soy sauce. Then there was the Khao Soi. It came with spaghetti noodles again in a weird whitish soup with huge chunks of potato and mixed vegetables that were barely cooked. The potatoes were huge! Size of golf balls. Random vegetables in the soup that doesn't belong and maybe three whole potatoes. The soup was very bland and digging through the potatoes made me tired. I also had the fried Bok Choy appetizer. I love Bok Choy so I ordered it and what came out looked like dead grass. Very sad. It didn't even look like Bok Choy, mystery plant. Over fried, bitter, no seasoning and oily. Sushi here is worse than chinese buffet. They have no idea what they are doing. This place has no knowledge in Asian cuisine, yet many people still go because they don't know what the original authentic dish is suppose to taste like. I'm very sorry to be leaving a negative review for this restaurant after years of great meals. That history is the only reason I'm giving them two stars. I don't know what's changed with the standards there, but last night I found a roach in my take out. Let me repeat COCKROACH, not alive, but cooked into the food with my almond tofu. The service has always been spotty here but I put up with it for the good food, and just tried to sit inside, upfront so my table wouldn't be forgotten. The almond tofu and the chirashi were my favorite dishes but where there's one roach there's bound to be lots more. Especially if it made its way into the food unnoticed. :( read more

Mr. Chopsticks--whoever he is--neither disappointed nor amazed, and that is perfectly acceptable when one considers the alternative: trumped up "healthy" fusion bowls of brown rice, tofu and goddamn bok choy, or even worse, water chestnuts, at a price point that would have Mr. Chopsticks clicking his heels, but no, his is the hard way, the stoic way, the way that build the railroads and founded an empire. His is food that scratches an itch in your soul, food that your body understands. The hot and sour soup arrived and was exactly what one would imagine hot and sour soup should be. The crab rangoon, while oddly wrapped, were even better than what the majority of Americans would agree crab rangoon should be. The General Tso's pork over noodles was exactly what a run of the mill fellow would think fried pork cutlet in a sweet and spicy sauce accompanied by egg noodle should be. The fried tofu Pad Thai was exactly what a random panel of chefs would dictate fried soy protein over pan-fried noodles in a tamarind-based sauce should be. Went here yesterday for a friends birthday. Service was awful. Our waiter took forever to do anything. He did not appear to care about us at all. The table next to us came in just before we put in our order and they got their food before we did. When we asked where out food was, our waiter said he had just put it in. That was after 10-15 minutes, the food came in another 10. Everyone had finished their drinks and were waiting for refills. Our waiter filled them after he brought our food out and never check on us. We had to ask for our checks. And my friend's ice cream still hadn't come out. We all paid for our food at the front desk and sat around for another 5-10 minutes waiting for her ice cream. And then we had to wait for a spoon. The flavor of my Pad Kee Mao was lacking. The Pho my friends had was also pretty sad for $9. Go somewhere else honestly. read more

Ok, here Is the deal with Chopsticks: You are in a town with two large colleges and a huuuuuge art and music scene. People here like greazy, Americanized food, and yes, your waiter is probably hung over. If you can't handle that, drive to Royal Lane in Dallas, where I'm sure that Ling Han, or whoever, will serve you a very authentic Chinese meal and kiss your ass. That being said, having lived here for over ten years, I'd have to say for the price, Chopsticks is one of the best Asian style places in town. Their sushi is good, not great, but better than most in town, and not expensive at all. Most of their Asian dishes are good, and while they are Americanized, the portions are huge enough to split. I have never had rude or ungracious service. They are a busy restaurant, so yes, you may have to wait more than 5 minutes for your food. I recommend the pad Thai with chicken and a side of fried rice. My hubby and I split this all the time. Or the shrimp sukiyaki. Also, this is one of the few places in town where a vegan can be satisfied. Oh, btw, the owners are Chinese. They are purposefully catering to American college students, and succeeding. This place never fails to please my hungry tummy! We went today while in our old stomping ground for a few hours. Sadly, the Beef Thai Salad was not playing it's A-game today. I like it SPICY and it was tasty, but no hotness :( The chicken egg rolls are fantastic as are the steamed veggie pot stickers. I believe some items have slipped over the years, but it is still tasty overall. And the staff are usually prompt (for Denton standards). I love Mr. Chopsticks. Now don't get all weepy on me, whining about not getting your favorite chicken legs or sweet and sour pork here, folks. It's a fusion place, just roll with it. Some knockouts: the sesame vegetables- big chunks of tasty veggies, including okra! In a light tasty sauce. The vegetable tempura dinner has a cornucopia of fresh crisp vegetables, even green beans, all served up in a spicy garlicky sauce. The vegetable dumplings are light and expertly prepared. Do you guys think I'm a vegetable freak yet? Yeah, well, I am. So? Vegetables just have so much more to offer than meat. Not that I wouldn't turn down a good steak, but that's another review... I hated this place.....the egg drop soup was soso, out chicken coconut soup was nasty...so we sent it back, and the sesame chicken was way over cooked and we told our waitress we didn't like that either. I adore this place! I never eat anywhere else when I'm in the 'ol Dentron. It always seems to be bustling when I come in, so that's always a good sign. The pad thai with tofu is my top favorite. It's different than anywhere else, and very sweet and still savory. It is to die for! Order the tofu fried, not soft. I think its better that way. What i like is that this is not your run of the mill Asian take-out restaurant in a strip mall. The quality is better here and the food has great flavor for a sit down restaurant with a fast food feel. The portion is huge, I always take half home and have it for lunch the next day. Its a little bit cheaper than other places, I usually pay $9-10 for a good pad thai, but here it's only $8 and I really feel full and have leftovers as well! The flavor is unique and quite yummy. The summer rolls are lovely also. Not filled with wilty veggies like some places. Very prettily rolled with care. A nice touch. I've also had the yellowfin tuna chirashi zushi. It is very very tasty and $5-6 cheaper than other places, yet Mr Chopsticks still uses a nice quality fish. Major thumbs up here. If I've just gotten paid and can splurge a little, I'll get this tasty bowl. The service is also top notch. Though just about everyone who works here looks to be college age like myself, they're all great servers/bussers and are all around awesome. Everyone always looks busy. The place isn't dirty, and they work hard and I always try and tip them well when I come in. The food comes out faster than you'd think. Even if it's busy, the food comes out in 10 minutes max. There's no nice way to put it, the curry was the absolute worst I've ever had. I ordered the massaman chicken curry, it had potatoes as big as multiple of my fingers, onions that I took aside and made a small mountain of them on my plate. There was hardly any chicken, and cut into pieces so small that the vegetables dominated over them. The sauce was the worst of all, it was incredibly sweet, like if they had added one more teaspoon of sugar it would be dessert sweet. It was not anywhere near spicy or even "mild". WHAT??!! Lumpia?! Holy Jesus. Finally, food from the motherland, in black and white ink. ...And that single appetizer was it. The rest of the three-page menu offered food from Viet Nam, Japan, China, Thailand... You get the picture. I personally will not order sushi from a restaurant that wasn't Japanese. Honestly, I was a little worried since all of these cuisines are vastly different and seeing them thrown in together was a dreadful match. Like the Brady Bunch and the Addams Family (I don't know why I had the sudden urge to use a classic television simile, but I digress). I mean really, it's a little unnerving knowing that you're going to get your next meal at this place. However, My Friend the Artist (MFTA), was very excited that we were going to this place and said that it was a "Denton Institution." Repeatedly. And I said this in my mind, trying to calm down and pick something. Repeatedly. And remembered again that this place only had one Filipino food item. An appetizer. Oh, my ethnic pride was wounded. But instead of feeling dismayed, I really should have focused: CHOICES. Everything. Read on. Appetizer: Pot Stickers: We picked vegetable and chose to have them steamed (vs. fried). Beef, chicken, and pork were the other choices. You really, really gotta admire the complete willingness of these folks to do that. I mean, everyone's had orange chicken. But they have the same thing-- with a beef option! In this case, the vegetables were a good choice; four pot stickers came out with a side of spicy chili sauce. The pot stickers were delicious. Many things on the menu sounded delicious. However! I was hankering for something spicy. I got walnut chicken with steamed rice (brown and fried were other options), a decision based on the little chili pepper symbol next to the name. MFTA got chicken yakitori and was allotted two sides. The friendly waitress ran them all by MFTA, who selected steamed rice and tempura vegetables. My meal was just okay. Really. I think there were chicken specks in it. Kinda watery. Not really spicy, either. But MFTA's dish looked amazing. Several kabobs of grilled chicken, side spicy sauce (WHAT!! IT ALSO CAME IN SPICY!!!!!!? ). The tempura vegetables that were paired with it, while promising, were bland. No seasoning in the batter. Got a dessert of four sesame balls (they were small, much smaller than I was used to from the bakery). All this and two drinks was for the amazing price of $24. G'dam. Not a five-star place for sure, but the with the vast choices of food, you're bound to find something you approve of. The ingredients are listed for each dish; no excuses. I visited Mr. Chopsticks with some friends who used to live in Denton and they RAVE about this place. Upon this visit, they said that it didn't taste like the same Mr. Chopsticks of old, but it was still really good in my opinion. I had a Sapporo and the Chirashi with shrimp. I'm pretty used to Chirashi coming with all different cuts of fish, but just choosing one guaranteed me that I wouldn't gorge myself. The Chriashi came with Miso soup, too. Their portions are pretty large so I'm glad they make you pick only one kind of fish. The Chirashi was accompanied by seaweed, pickled ginger that was not dyed pink :) and sesame sticky rice. My friends let me try their dinners, too. The lettuce cups are wonderfully seasoned and minced nicely. The tofu is very firm... probably some of the best I've had in the area. The chicken egg rolls were really fresh and crispy. I tried sparkling sake for the first time and it was pretty good, too! Beer and entree = $14. Not bad! read more

It's hard for me to explain my love for Mr. Chopsticks. For the near decade I've lived in Denton, restaurants come and go, as well as my interests. The one staple I've had throughout my time in the area is this local establishment. Now, I know some people don't always like Chopsticks. I guess I can understand; not every place is for everyone. I've personally never had a bad experience here. The sushi is good, the sesame chicken with extra vegetables is a favorite, and the service is usually pretty decent. I was here recently with my dad and girlfriend and we all walked away very satisfied. I got the sushi (California roll and Alaskan roll), my dad go the stir fry chicken and broccoli, and my girlfriend got the sesame chicken. Everything came out quickly and it was great for everybody. After finishing my sushi (I'm usually first to finish any meal), I started picking at the sesame chicken. Well, picking started turning into consuming the remaining leftovers in a fashion that would not be presentable to most. Luckily I was in the company of people who know that, at times, I eat like a bear; ravaging any food in my sight. Wow! Mr Chopsticks is really different and ONLY in Denton would you have a staff of hippies/punks/and rockabilly kids serving you amazing Chinese food. The people watching is extraordinary. Also, you can't beat the price- 3 courses and a bottle of sake for less than $50? Awesome! We started with the stir fried green beans and pot stickers. The green beans were perfectly cooked and covered in crunchy garlic. For my main, I had the masaman curry- onions, potatoes, and fried tofu tossed in a curry sauce. The menu said it would be spicy, but I found it a bit bland. The tofu was tough as well. I think I would get something else in the future. My boyfriend had the General Tso's and it was actually spicy, covered in red chilis. Super yummy! Don't be afraid to sub noodles for rice either. I finished with the green tea ice cream which was HEAVEN! I highly recommend the Sho Chiku Bai Classic sake. It's around $14 a bottle and you can take the rest home. All in all, I would stick to something stir fried for my main, but will definitely be back next time I'm in Denton. read more

Mr Chopsticks has great food and a huge menu. My only complaint is that you can't order fried rice without egg (isn't that weird?). This could really be a 4 or 5 star place, but the service is bringing my rating down. The wait staff is friendly enough but I've never had a good waiter at Mr Chopsticks. My water glass will remain empty until I flag someone down and it seriously takes FOREVER to get food or the bill. My boyfriend and I joke that we only go to Mr Chopsticks when we're "almost hungry" because the wait for our food will always be so long. Likewise, when we finish our meals we have to wait and wait and wait before we receive our check. Another issue I have with Mr Chopsticks is with their takeout service. You're supposed to just pull up to the window and receive your takeout (after calling in and ordering) but when I pulled up I had to wait for 5 full minutes before someone opened the window to help me. Then, even though I came when they told me to, the guy inside told me to pull up and park because my order wasn't ready yet. All in all, I had to wait almost 20 extra minutes for my food. Despite my issues with the staff, the food at Mr Chopsticks is delicious. It's a fun place to hang out at night. read more

The food here is so regular! I got three appetizers and pad thai and nothing stood out to me. I was so disappointed because I'd heard great things about the place. I saw that they've gotten some recognition in the past but I think their glory days are over. I gave them two stars for the service- none of those stars are for the food lol. read more

Overrated. It has a name that sounds more hip than other local Asian eateries, which has proven empirically to me why hipsters and socialites prefer being seen eating food here on a more frequent basis than OG or CFF. If you find that your environment directly influences the way in which your sense of taste functions, then eat here--otherwise, there are less pretentious establishments that offer better options (and quantities) at lower prices. read more

I love this place! I have never had a bad experience. PROS: Extensive menu that caters to vegetarians, great staff, fast, and cheap (My ladyfriend and I have tried and failed to spend more than $30 many times. Usually two drinks, two spring rolls, sushi, two orders of soup, and two entrees). CONS: There isn't a Jetsons/bank tube system from the restaurant to my house. read more
