Great restaurant that is typically quiet, maybe too quiet. I've been here at least 5 times and hardly see any other customers. Their servings are huge!!! The thali dish is impossible for me to finish. Service is always friendly and there is almost always parking right out front. We stopped for a light dinner the day before Thanksgiving, and had a terrific meal. The cauliflower and potato dish was absolutely delicious, the best I have had in an Indian restaurant. We also had garlic naan and some rice pudding for dessert. The interior is a bit rundown and chaotic looking, ie. the door to the bathroom didn't completely shut, and the place was mostly empty. It looked like a good scrubbing would be a good idea. Despite the negatives, we will definitely come back here anytime we're driving through the area. We came in at 8pm and had the whole place to ourselves. It was very peaceful. The owner was lovely and took us back to the kitchen and showed us the tandoori oven and showed us how they cook the papadam. The food was just okay. We got the meat thali, which is meant to have like 8 to 10 types of curries. This only came with 3 meats which were very small and chewy. The naan is not a naan, it's a parata. They added sugar to some of the dishes. Nothing authentic about this place. If you are looking for actual Indian food don't go here. read more

I called the restaurant to add sauces and they did not get the order even though DD emailed me that it was being prepared. After a few calls the restaurant was kind to include the sauces and the food arrived quick, hot, and delicious Highly recommend this restaurant. Literally the best Indian food I have ever had! Everything we have gotten here is amazing.

The restaurant was quiet this Wed. evening and we felt the kitchen was cooking just for us. We asked to try a little bit of their lentil soup because we wanted to take some home after our meal and they brought out the most delicious large sample to try. For our main meal we had vegetarian samosas that were crispy on the outside with a flaky crust and flavorful on the inside, just what you hope for but rarely get. We ordered lamb korma, and chicken tikka masala- the meat was moist and delicious in both dishes. Their saag paneer was rich and creamy. my friend had a mango lassi and deemed it the best she's ever had. We also had fresh coconut naan and enjoyed it immensely. We spoke to the chef/owner and the waiter who were both lovely and assured them that we appreciated the delicious cooking. I'm so delighted to have this restaurant right up my street. It wasn't always the case but over the last few years under new ownership, Mr.India has become a new favorite in town. Forever a go to for takeout, as I commute to Newburyport and there is no Indian cuisine where I live. Never had a bad item off the menu and we've tried them all. I picked up the Chefs Special ChauChau last night and it was phenomenal. The Lamb Vindaloo is authentically spicy (read: HOT) and is delicious. Those adverse to heat they have great options and can also tailor the heat on some dishes at request. My kids adore the butter chicken and naan. 40 minutes late on a one item take out order, and nobody seems to care... FINALLY I step up to the register (next to the kitchen,) to pay and complain - and the smell of Indian cooking is overwhelmed by skunky weed funk!! Can I give them a negative 5 review ? The place was deserted when we arrived but that's not a good enough reason to ding the restaurant on its own. As we walked to our tables we saw curry on the carpet that was not cleaned off. Ok still that can be overlooked. Called and asked if they accept Restaurant.com gift cards and was told yes. The following day placed an order (to go). When placing the order, I told the young man I would be paying with a combination of restaurant.com gift card and cash. He said that was fine. When I arrived to pick up the order, I was told they did not make one of the dishes because they did not understand what I wanted. I explained and the owner simply said we don't have that, pick something else. I didn't want the food that was ready to get cold so I just said forget it. I told him I was paying with a combination of gift card and credit card. He was very rude and said "no", no restaurant.com! I explained that I had called the previous day and was told they did accept the gift cards and that when placing the order, had again said I would be using the gift card and got the response of "okay". The owner yelled, " No! No gift card! No restaurant.com! " He said he put up a sign saying no restaurant.com. There was a sign, and it said, no restaurant.com accepted but would give a 10-15% discount. When asked about that he started yelling about no discount, he couldn't make money that way. You people trying to make me go broke." I almost walked out taking none of the food but sucked up his rudeness and held my tongue. The charge was $15.00 more than expected, was short one entree and the naam order was incorrect. Will NEVER return to this restaurant!! read more

If you are ordering delivery, I recommend DoorDash. I've never had an issue waiting for an order. The food comes out amazing. Prepare to pay a higher price than most places nearby, but trust me it's totally worth it. I love that they send the meals separate from the rice so you can combine them as you'd like or save some for later (never finished the whole portion they provide in one sitting). Comfortable atmosphere and kind staff. Try the palungo! Samosa chat is sweet-spicy-tangy and enough for two as an appetizer. Their onion relish, which I can eat by the gallon, is exactly what it should be. If you take a menu with you as you leave, I guarantee you'll be back-so many choices. If you are looking for a hearty, healthy, delicious meal in Newburyport look no further than Mr. India. Without a doubt this restaurant surpasses all other local restaurants in taste, flavor and quality. Indian food is healthy particularly because it mixes likes with likes. In Ayurveda, which is the life knowledge from which Indian cooking stems, you don't want to be mixing proteins with other proteins. Better to have an array of vegetables with one protein and one starch (usually basmati rice). Ayurveda and Indian cooking understand the importance of working with the digestive system instead of against it. I have never left this restaurant feeling anything other than satiated, happy and light due to the intelligent ingredients and heart used in the making of these meals. We went for weekend lunch buffet, everything was fresh and tasty, Naan and chicken tandoori is served fresh on the table ( still part of buffet). There was different variety of food vegetarian and non- vegetarian. For desert there was only one choice ( no problem, I am not desert guy). Server made sure everything on us was ok. They really need to fix their website - it is full of viruses and automatically begins installing malware on your phone/computer. The food was okay, but nothing overly special. A small group of us on recommendation dined here last night. Due to safety and also the season, I usually choose to be outside. However yesterday was a scorcher. When we got to the restaurant noticing their outdoor tables were directly in front of the venue in the blazing sun, we quickly changed our minds. Yes, I thought that on a day like yesterday if we sat out there our food would be cooking on its own by itself! So we made our way into the restaurant and it's air conditioning. We were greeted right away and asked where we would be most comfortable to sit as the sun even though inside was quite intense. We sat down & the server arrived to fill glasses with icy cold water.. and he also gave us menus. I scanned it and noticed the array of vegetarian dishes - some I'd never tried before. Anyway being who I am I ended up playing it safe and started out with vegetable samosas. The dining companion next to me chose a similar appetizer - but Nepalese. They came within just a few minutes and mine were enormous... I don't think I've ever been served or seen samosas so large. If I'd known I would have either asked for a half portion . Or made sure to share it with a fellow diner. The one I had was piping hot with a side of a red chili type dipping sauce and absolutely DELICIOUS! The server had already taken out dinner orders but was excellent regarding pacing the 2 courses so we wouldn't be served them both are the same time. I definitely appreciate that. Our entrees arrived - mine was Saag paneer ( spinach with cheese) eta side of rice and it looked great. One friend ordered a mixed tandoori grill consisting of chicken, shrimp, and I believe lamb along with rice. The other diner ordered a vegetable curry ( red). All meals were presented well. Between the 3 of us we all found them to be excellent but at the same time very filling. I so wanted to order a dessert but that would really have been pushing it... Next time! Let me add that while we dined we were entertained by the local duo: Dodging Frogs... making the evening even better YES, this was a great experience with delicious food. I don't know where all these great reviews are coming from but I'm Indian and can tell you this is NOT Indian food. I've eaten at good and bad Indian restaurants but this should never be called Indian food whatsoever. The butter naan was like a a cooked tortilla, the lamb chauchau was made with cheap ramen noodles, the butter chicken taste like sweet tomato paste and the meat in all the dishes were over cooked. I love spicy food and I don't know what the protocol is for asking for spice. I fully prepared myself for mind numbing spicy-ness. I did take out so I wasn't there to ask about the spicy scale. Love this place so much! The food is very authentic and the service is just as great. Whenever I go I get the malai kofta which is vegetable balls, mainly potato based, in a velvet coconut sauce. It's so so good and I never fail to enjoy every last bite. The garlic naan is just as good and a perfect side with the malai kofta, especially for dipping it in the excess sauce. Review #600 I finally got back to Mr. India a long while after they first moved and on the recommendation of many in Newburyport. You can add mine to the list of people who admire this place. The new location is great as it's away from the busy downtown area which means less fighting for a table. The owners are very personable, coming out several times to check if we needed anything and talking us up about the area, his food and anything else.They were very polite and efficient and clearly take pride in their menu and building as the inside was pretty spotless and nicely decorated. The food itself was delicious with chicken tandoori to rival any I've ever had, brought out to you on a steaming hot skillet with veggies on top. Aloo paneer and veggie biryani are other favorites of mine that were great here and check out the traditional Nepalese dishes as well. A sure fire can't miss and with Jewel in the Crown as well, Newburyport hosts a pair of fine Indian options. read more
