We had a problem with the pilot light on our water heater not staying lit. Called Mr Rooter and they came out the next day. We paid almost 70 bucks for what basically amounted to a sales pitch. The tech did not inspect or test the electronics on the water heater, he did not even touch it. He tried to sell us a new one for over 1600 dollars. Repair would have been $300-800 even though he didn't test anything. We made a few calls and Stan The Hot Water Man had a guy come over and replace the electronics for us. Even if we had needed to replace it the cost would have only been about one thousand dollars. We have used them once before and were very happy with their work. read more

Let me explain why i gave this a 2 stars...I had an issue with my washer not draining properly and backing up. Jeremy the tech showed up very professional and diagnosed the problem right away. I had all faith that he knew what it took to fix the problem. After flushing the lines and clearing the problem he was on his way. I did a few loads of laundry and everything was going great! Then that night I went to get in the shower and my bathtub immediately was backing up. It was working fine that morning before he showed up to fix the other issue. So he fixed one problem and created another. I called the next morning to let Mr. Rooter know of the issue and they had no problem sending Jeremy back out to check on the new problem. Jeremy told me immediately that is just a coincidence and timing of the clog. That what he did the day before had nothing to do with it. But for 300 more dollars he can fix my tub issue. This is after it already cost me 519 dollars for my other issue. I let Jeremy know I would not be using his service. I would fix it on my own. I fixed the issue with a bottle of Draino for less then 15 dollars. Again no reflection on Jeremy but I suggest Jeremy you get a new job. Jeremy am sure your hands are tied when you came back out to fix the issue to charge me again. But Mr. Rooter you certainly missed a excellent opportunity for excellent Customer service. I would recommended Jeremy but not the company he works for. Then to boot I got a call that evening from Brooke who wanted to know if I still needed their service. Seriously! that call put me over the edge...Still looking for my money! Your company was recommended to me by my realtor friends. They will hear about his and I would not recommend this company. Sorry Jeremy...you were great! But your company should honestly take some of my money and invest in Customer service training. This is my 4th or 5th time using Mr. Rooter of Portland. Each time I received a very high level of service, quality, and value. However I was remiss in submitting reviews. Friday afternoon at 1:30pm I called to request service to fix a water leak that had appeared on the wall side of the kitchen hot water cutoff valve. At 2:40pm I was notified that Brian was on his way. He arrived at 3:20. By 4:15 everything was fixed, cleaned up, and ship-shape. Brian provided an estimate to replace the offending cutoff valve, which I approved. He got right to work, and in the course of conversation we decided it was best to replace both 1970's era valves to avoid problems later. He did the work and honored his original estimate, basically charging me for one valve replacement instead of two. This is consistent with Mr. Rooter's other visits to my home. React fast, send a great person who happens to be an excellent plumber, quote a reasonable price, deliver more parts and service than expected, charge me the original quoted price. Over the last few years I've hired Mr. Rooter plumbers 4 or 5 times. Brian, Chris, and one other guy (sorry I forgot his name) all had the same helpful, professional, friendly attitude. All three got along well with my spazzy black lab. All three clearly explained the problems, possible solutions, and then delivered more service than expected. I will continue to hire Mr. Rooter for all my plumbing service needs. read more

Jason Belcher was great and came to my rescue within 1 hour of my call for help. He started with the ways to resolve the issue that were less expensive. My drain did require snaking, he told me what the next steps were, and I had no questions about what he was doing, and what to expect next. The charges stayed in line with his estimate. He cleaned up after the work was completed. Was very nice, friendly, and a pleasure to work with. He even had a treat for my Dog. He turned a bad situation, into a pleasant experience. This company is usually very busy, and it may take a few days for someone to get out to your house. However, once they arrive, they are always top notch. Today, Bradley came out to work on our broken garbage disposal, backed up kitchen sink, and mysteriously-filled-with-brown-water dishwasher. He was exactly on time, and very polite. As he inspected the kitchen stuff, he also gave me pointers on how I could be keeping my drains and pipes running more efficiently. Who knew I was supposed to be doing anything with that floor drain in the basement?! I felt like Bradley explained all of my options, wasn't trying to sell me anything I didn't need, and even tried his best to fix the garbage disposal so I wouldn't have to buy a new one. (He succeeded!) I really appreciated Bradley's calm, capable attitude and his work today. read more

I was strung along for hours waiting for a plumber. I told them I had no problem waiting until the late evening because it was an emergency. I recieved a couple calls with updates and them explaining they were running late and it felt as if I was getting brushed off. Keep in mind my original call was placed at 5pm that day, not an irregular hour of the evening. I am a renter so they needed approval from my landlord which he gave to their office prior. Then at 11pm the technician called again saying he couldn't get ahold of my landlord so he couldn't come help me. I told him the landlord had already given consent and the necessary information but apparently that is not good enough for this company or simply they just didn't want to be out late. Now it's the middle of the night and I cannot get another company to come help me because my landlord is asleep. Had I known before the middle of the night there was a chance they couldn't come help me I could have contacted another company at a decent hour and recieved the help I so urgently needed. Now I'm forced to go to the bathroom outside in December because of this companies lack of communication and assistance. Don't waste your time and seek the help of a local plumber like I should have done. read more

I wish I had read Dennis' review (the one prior to mine). Mr Rooter is outrageously priced. I called to have faucets installed for the kitchen sink and 2 bathroom vanities. They do not give ball-park estimates over the phone. So I went ahead and paid $70 to have them come provide a bid. Their estimate was over $1500! When I questioned the plumber how long this job would take, he admitted it would be maybe 3 hours. I ended up getting the work done by American Unified Construction from Vancouver. They did it in 2.5 hrs for under $400. At Mr Rooter's rate, this would have been $600 per hour! Unbelievable. Please look elsewhere. Mr Rooter's job is to root around in your pocket to bleed you dry. read more

Your tech, Ryan actually showed up early, saying he could come back, but was right in the neighborhood. It worked out fine for me. He scoped our sewer line and found a break immediately. My worst fears were confirmed, but not surprising. Ryan then went to his van and had a very fair estimate worked out within 5 minutes. When I asked what I owed, he said it was no charge and told me to contact the office, should I decide to have Mr. Rooter do the work (no hard sell). The whole process took about 15 minutes. When a toilet leaks it needs to be fixed and I typically call a small independent company rather than a franchise. After two calls to other companies (one of whom I have used before) with no response at all, I finally broke down and called Mr. Rooter (Not to be confused with "the other rooter" company) I expected a week out for an appointment. Three hours later Joel arrives with a smile on his face ready to take care of the porcelain god. Not only did he fix it, he explained how and why, assured me there was no permanent damage(my greatest fear) and guaranteed the work for a year! He emailed my receipt, gave me a refrigerator magnet, a new pen and a business card and was on his way! I asked several questions about the franchise which he was quite informed about and confirmed it was not the kind of repair I could have done myself. Over Chargers. Awful People. The Plumber, Trevor, was absolutely awful. Very rude. Not helpful at all. Will never use this company again and will never recommend their services. He quoted us 445$ to unclog a kitchen sink. When asked what that would cover, he said "that's how much it costs for a professional" He didn't even assess the issue. If he was more personable and less rude and maybe explained what the procedure would be and break down the cost...then maybe it would have been a better experience. Total ripoff company I called for three slow drains and they talked me into a main line cleanout saying it would clear all of the problems. Nothing was solved. I still had three slow drains when they left. They claim total satisfaction guarantee, but do not reply to complaints. read more

Easy to make an appointment but their pricing is sort of ridiculous. Had them out last week for a simple kitchen sink drain assembly replacement because our new garbage disposal didn't fit. They charged us $70 to come out and look under the sink and then let us know they charge by the task. We were quoted over $600 and they also tried to sell us a $100 "advantage plan". We went with another company who completed the job in 30 minutes and charged us 1/3 of the cost. read more

Easter weekend had a toilet back up due to main sewer line from house clogged with root ball. Jason Martin from Mr. Rooter came out within 45min of call. (Much quicker than other companies I called and waited half the day for.) Jason quickly resolved root ball and inspected line and home plumbing. Great customer service and knowledge! We had a "toilet/shower" sewage geyser today that decimated our downstairs bath, hallway and laundry room. We tried several plumbers who said they could come out tomorrow, yet we had a real problem that needed real-time attention. Mr. Rooter Portland - Vancouver got Cory out here within an hour. He videoscoped the sewer line from house to septic and found and then cleared the blockage causing the problem. He wet vacuumed the area then referred us to a restoration/damage firm who was on the phone to us immediately and showed up within the hour. Although we're faced with a "mini-Katrina" to likely have to replace flooring, sheetrock, baseboards etc. we hope our insurance will help and that we end up avoiding black mold and other issues. Jason arrived as promised, booties over his shoes, and ready to do whatever it took to open the drains. After performing his inspection, he showed us that the problem wasn't the one we thought it was, and cleaned up. Friendly. Straight shooter. And didn't even charge us for his time. read more

Along with much of the area, late December brought some flooding to our house due to heavy rains and high water table. Our driveway drain backed up and water was pouring in our crawlspace. Jeremy came out 630pm that night and gave us a quote to water jet the pipe. He was reasonable and honest, suggesting that he would have more luck and could do some more diagnostics if we waited until the next day with some light. We agreed and he returned the next day. Meanwhile, before he left he suggested that we run down to Home Depot to get a sump pump-- we never would have thought of that and his advice saved us a night of sleep! (we were turning on our trash pump every 10 minutes in the rain) The next day, he spent quite a while tracing our outdoor drain lines and water jetting them. In the end he concluded that they led to a drywell, which was likely backing up due to the high water table. While he didn't solve the problem that day, he diagnosed and traced our lines, along with providing us with basic instructions on how would could redo the lines ourselves. Jeremy's service and kindness was beyond appreciated, especially in a stressful time. We will recommend Jeremy and Mr. Rooter to everyone we know! read more

We have a leak between the meter and our house. This is going to be a big job as it is underneath a concrete sidewalk so getting multiple estimates is appropriate. Though we didn't actually pick this company to do the work or even give an estimate, they were the only company we searched for that charged for the estimate. $69.95. They may do fine work but if you have to charge for your estimate, that tells me that you are tired of giving free estimates and not getting the job. None of the other plumbers on the list charged for the estimate and were rated just as good. read more

Great experience. Called emergency after hours due to water leak into our 2nd floor living area. A tech arrived within an hour and helped this first time home owner locate the water shut off. Since that was all we required he didn't charge. Staff the following day called to see how things were doing and to let us know a plumber would contact us when they were available. They were nice enough to blow my phone up with numerous missed calls when the plumber was ready to make sure I didn't miss out on the opportunity. The plumber came out and explained charges, possible scenarios and was thorough. Hopefully I will never need their help again but won't hesitate to call them if needed. read more

While the technician was polite and did their job the price was ridiculous. We had called three pulmbers for quotes. One company we received an over the phone quote. Your company needed to give a quote on scene. Once I received the quote it was three times the amount as the other company. If this had been during the evening on a holiday I could see the increased cost. Since I had already cancelled the other appointment I went with you because it needed to get fixed. I've had one other service call from you company about a year ago. Again, the technician was polite, diagnosed the problem and saved me some money based on their recommendation. If I the choice again I would have waited and gone with another company. I would not recommend Mr Rooter to friends and family because of the ridiculous cost. The technician wasn't even a journeymen level plumber. Also, with a cost like that I would hope for more then a one year warranty. Pathetic! read more

long story short, I was quoted over 500 dollars to snake a clogged toilet, tech said he had to use a camera to thread the snake into the right pipe. I declined and with a 29.95 home depot snake I retrieved grandpas tiddy wittys (don't ask me how they got down there) from the toilet drain that's right three minutes, that's like 9000 dollars an hour, cmon now hiway ripoffs, avoid this company they will rip you off read more

The toilet was not flushing well. I snaked it . It was clear but still no clear flush. The one in the guest bathroom did flush well so it had to be an obstruction before the "Y" in the sewer line. They came out and snaked the line. He said he found not obstruction and perhaps it was the toilet itself and offered a new one installed. So what was a $250 bill turned to $900.00 in a few minutes. He put in the new toilet but when the plumber showed up to hook things up I heard him arguing with the technician about something not being needed. Brian ( the technician ) was supposed to get back to us to tell us what was wrong with the toilet. Absolutely no call back. The new commode works fine but we were victims of the old sales game: "sell, add on, sell up. Don't be as gullible as me. read more

On a night when not a single other plumber in the entire Portland Metro area was willing to come out and help us turn the water off to our condo (it had to be turned off to the entire building and the HOA lost the tool to turn it off), Mr. Rooter came through. Not only did their tech, Adam, drop everything and drive 40 minutes from Vancouver to get the water turned off after hours late on a Saturday night, but he helped re-install the part that needed replacing with no additional charge and showed us how to remove our drain cover. Owning a home seems to have those moments of "when it rains it pours". We are so grateful when this happened we had Mr. Rooter and Joel Boren to rescue us. Earlier we reported on how we had 2 plumbing issues within weeks of each other. Mr. Rooter came through for us with those issues and left us feeling secure and well plumbed. But, like said earlier, it poured again. Our other ADA toilet AND the other tub faucet decided to break at the same time. Fortunately we were able to have Joel Boren come to our house once again and do his magic. He arrived feeling compassionate to our limited budget and with the knowledge of how much money we had already spent due to Murphy's Law. Joel was his usual professional and competent self. He immediately set out to repair the faucet then check the toilet. He gently and without any pressure explained why the toilet needed replacement. He patiently listened to the grumblings of a budget gone awry. Joel tried to cut every financial corner possible while remaining honest. He found us a toilet that was simply perfect AND he even found us a $20 off coupon that was totally unexpected. Every dollar counts at this point. I can't say enough good things about Joel and his excellence in knowledge, integrity, compassion, how amazingly clean he is and how concerned he is with your plumbing needs. Honestly, we do hope to never have to see Joel again in the near future. But if the house decides to throw us another Murphy's Law we have every confidence that Joel and Mr. Rooter will be there to help put back the pieces. read more

My water heater for my house was not working and I called them in to troubleshoot the problem. It was $69. That was fine but before that, I called to ask how much labor was and they wouldn't tell me so I had to call them in to troubleshoot and get an estimate on the repair/labor cost. The technician arrived and after troubleshooting, the problem was a broken thermocouple which would be about $80. He then said that the minimum payment for any labor is about $220 which would bring the whole repair up to $300. If they had told me that the "minimum" for any labor was $220, I would've never called them to check my water heater. Three hundred dollars is already half of a new water heater at HomeDepot. I would have just bought a new heater if they had told me the "minimum labor cost" was $220. I don't think that it was too much trouble for them to tell me the "minimum labor cost" through the phone as it applies to every labor and does not require them to come to troubleshoot and estimate. read more
