I've lived by this place for so long but finally had a chance to try it! We went here for dinner on a Saturday evening and sat outside on their patio. It was quite busy with most of the indoor tables taken. I ordered the nasi bungkus and my partner got the mie goreng combo. The food came out pretty quickly. I thought the beef rendang in the bungkus was a little dry but I LOVED the turmeric fried chicken. It was crispy but tender inside and cooked perfectly. My only other taste of Indonesian food is Simpang asia up the road and the flavor was similar overall. The mie goreng was tasty and came with 2 chicken sate skewers and another side - don't remember the name. Portions were overall quite large as well. There is a sign that says free parking in the back, but I live close enough to walk here. There is also street and neighborhood parking. Our friend who's Indonesian highly recommended St Sate, and after dining at this restaurant we can also confirm it is the next best thing from visiting the country.  Our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomach, no worries because we love leftovers.  The 4 of us shared some appetizers such as the corn fritters, fish cake, chicken sate, and beef rib sate.  The combos are also a great way to try a little bit of everything such as the one with fried rice and the one with noodles mie goreng.  It was my 1st time trying the Sota Betawai which is a coconut milk beef based soup, it was delicious and perfect with rice.  Hubby has been craving bihun goreng which is stirred fried vermicelli noodles, a very simple dish since his trip to SE Asia a year ago. Yelp description of Mr. Sate says they are known for good satay and coconut milk soup. Maybe i should've just tried what they are known for. I tried ordering fried noodle (mie goreng) and it wasn't as i imagined. The fried noodle tastes more like yakisoba than a real indo fried noodle. It has cilantro, sweated onion and carrots. It made me think of thailand and japan back and forth rather than the indonesian taste profile. I tried to enjoy it as is and forgo the nostalgy, but even then the only thing i enjoyed the most was the bits of eggs and the choy sum which is a really nice vegetable commonly used in indonesian noodle dishes. If there anything i would order again based on this visit, it is the tempeh mendoan. They are crispy (which is weird, because usually tempeh mendoan are cooked rare), and tastes amazing with the silky tempeh (yes, you got that right. Tofu is not the only silky stuff in indonesian cuisine. Tempeh in mendoan dish is silky because it's a soft tempeh fried 'medium rare'). I love their tempeh mendoan and literally finished it in a blink. Though, at $8, i don't know if i would ever order it again. Especially since they don't give indonesian chilies with it. Hands down best Indonesian food I know of Pros: 1. My absolute favorite is the bakwan jagung (fried corn). I've only had something similar once ever in Hawaii and this is better. I love corn already, but once you fry it and mix it with this delicious batter it's irresistable. 2. I only discovered bihun (thin, soft noodles) recently while traveling in Southeast Asia and it's hard to find here at home. This dish hits the spot and it's full of veggies and flavor. I added chicken and I like how it also has pieces of omelette in there. 3. The satay sticks are good - I had chicken and galbi. 4. The empek-empek is a nice variation of fish cake that I haven't had before. I like it. 5. Last but not least, the fried rice with corned beef is amazing. It is the best and tastiest fried rice I've ever had. 6. Service is good, our waitress was very friendly and the food came out fast. Cons: 1. This spot was incredible. Easy parking in the upstairs structure. Table service for dine-in. The corn fritters (bakwan jagung) with tamarind sauce (and fresh red and green hot sauces) got us off to a great start. We love spicy, and the sauces were spicy without being overwhelming. The fritters were super hot and fresh and delicious. We split the Combo #2 and paid for the Soto Batawi (coconut beef soup) upgrade and i'm SO glad we did. That soup was possibly the most flavorful thing I've ever eaten - it was warm and well-spiced, not too salty, and just a pleasure. The chicken and short rib satay were both great. The potato/beef dumpling was yummy. My cousins and I ordered Combo 3, Nasi Goreng with chicken, and Bakwan Jagung. We were actually recommended a couple of the dishes and we were not disappointed! Combo 3 has a choice between Soto Mie or Soto Ayam, 1 chicken sate, 1 beef potato sate 1 shrimp balado sate, 1 pork sate, and 1 perkedel, and steamed rice. We got the Soto Ayam. The Nasi Goreng is Indonesian stir fried rice with eggs and veggies (plus chicken). The Balwan Jagung is Indonesian corn fritters made with corn and bell peppers with homemade sweet soy sauce. Everything was seriously so good! We loved the Nasi Goreng and were pleasantly surprised by the Bakwan Jagung. It was so good! Picked up a quick to-go order of the Kasi Kuning which had a little bit of everything. Some yellow coconut rice, a bit of stir fried noodles, fried hard boiled egg, turmeric chicken and other little goodies. Full of flavor and packed very nicely! I actually prefers Mr. Sate vs Simpang Asia which is also very good BTW, but the flavors of dishes at Mr. Sate reminds me more of home. Mr. Sate has become my picky teen's favorite restaurant. We started picking up food here during the pandemic, and it's become a regular on our restaurant rotation. I've tried a few different menu items and have to say that it's kind of hit and miss. My first time here I had the Mie Tek Tek, which I was completely underwhelmed by and was prepared never to return. My husband and daughter both got Mie Goreng and loved it, so the next time I ordered that. They have four different spice levels - mild to extra spicy. Mild is extremely mild, so I order medium, even though I'm a wimp when it comes to heat. Bakmi Ayam and Soto Ayam are both pretty simple dishes (and definitely not spicy), reminding me of something my mom would make, but the portions are small. My faves are the Mie Goreng and Sohun Goreng, which has bean thread noodles. Oddly enough, the chicken sate is just OK by my standards. I like the perkedel (fried potato patties) that came with the combo better. Always happy to see a bag of shrimp chips included in my order, especially since no one else in my family likes them and I can have them all to myself! Limited street parking. read more

NOTE: Dined in on 5/29/19 and 9/8/20. Be careful if you have peanut allergies, as there are items that contain peanut sauce such as the chicken sate. Since Indonesia is made up of so many islands and cultures, it can be hard to pinpoint what Indonesian cuisine actually is. It's a true melting pot of flavors from indigenous recipes to Indian, Chinese, and Dutch influenced ones. During my two visits, I chose to focus on the sate, but I definitely plan on returning to try other dishes from this establishment. Here's the breakdown of the farm plate, which comes with one babi (pork), two beef and potato, and two chicken sate.: Babi Sate - Soft, tender, ground pork with a sweet soy marinade. This was my personal favorite due to the texture (firm, but falls apart into small chunks gently upon entering your mouth) and marinade complementing one another so well. The ground pork really absorbs the sweet flavors of the marinade and the char on the outside is perfect! Beef and Potato Sate - The beef was of decent quality, but not amazing and it was cooked well. The potatoes weren't too dry and paired well with the beef, making it a rather filling skewer. The homemade balado (a type of chili sauce/paste akin to sambal, which is an ever-present staple of Indonesian cuisine) is what carried this skewer, as it was so ridiculously flavorful that I wanted to have a healthy wallop of it with every bite. I think it would be really interesting to have the potatoes be crispy around the outside, but given the way that they are cooked, I don't think that's possible. My least favorite, but still delicious! Chicken sate - My second favorite, mostly because I'm a sucker for a good peanut sauce and Mr. Sate's homemade peanut sauce SLAPS! The chicken is also so tender and juicy and charred on the edges. I'll be back to try more items on the menu, but even if all you're coming here for are the skewers, it's definitely worth it! read more
