If you are looking for new cuisines to try, I definitely recommend checking out Mr. Sate! They serve delicious Indonensian food and it's at a great price too! My friend and I tried combo #2 which comes with noodle soup (we chose soto mie), chicken sate, beef potato sate, pekedel, and rice. We also tried the nasi kunig which has yellow rice, egg, chicken, and fried noodles. I really enjoyed everything and I love the variety of food that comes with each dish. My favorite was the soto mie, it had lots of beef and noodles, and was very comforting on a cold day. I would reccomend eating the sate skewers first as they will get cold fastest. Disclaimer: Review based on no dine in mandate during COVID-19. First thing I would like to say is the lady who took our order was not friendly at all. Yes, we were unsure of what to order but she was not helpful in guiding us through the menu. Instead, we received an unkind personality with a demand of a "nice" tip to be included. Onto food, we ordered corn fritters, chicken sate, combo #2 with shrimp skewer, nasi goreng combo, nasi bungkus, and a side of pickled cucumbers. Mango teas were included with the combo meals, which was nice. None of the dishes left a great impression. They were all mediocre, Indonesian food. Wanted to give this Indonesian spot a try. Got the Bakwan Jagung, the Beef Rendeng Bowl, & the Chicken Sate & can say the food was delicious! Service & Seating: An older lady at the register helped take our order. She was super helpful & friendly. The food took a little longer to arrive, but nothing too inconvenient. A handful of seats both indoor & outdoor. Food: - Bakwan Jagung: If you're a fan of corn & crispy food, I'd recommend trying this. The accompanying sauce was also great! - Beef Rendeng: The bowl was good, but could've used a little more sauce. Otherwise, delicious. - Chicken Sate: Since the pieces are smaller, I'd recommend grabbing some rice or noodles on the side if you're getting it by itself. We got it it's the Mie combo. Happy April! I was happy that we decided to check out a new Indonesian spot here in LA a few months back. Far few people are familiar with the incredible flavors from Indonesian cooking so it's great that Mr. Sate provides an opportunity for LA folx to go and try this for themselves. My group of ten made a semi-reservation a few days prior and they were happy to accommodate us, even though they don't necessarily take reservations. The restaurant is small so I can imagine them not doing this if it gets busy-busy on a weekend, but coming in on Thursday night, it was totally fine. If you're unsure where to start, I recommend trying out one of their combos which come with a variety of sides and a satay skewer. Their namesake certainly holds true to its quality because the chicken satay with their house peanut sauce was delicious. I tried their Rendang, a favorite dish of mine of slow-cooked beef in coconut milk and spices. This was served over rice and was one of the best I've had here in the States. Every bite was juicy and fragrant. My friend's Nasi Goreng (Indonesian Fried Rice) was also fantastic and we loved being able to adjust the spicy level to our liking. 5-stars all around for the quality of their food. The management at Mr. Sate were incredibly nice and hospitable to our group. They made sure that my request to have an accessible space for my friend was met, offered to take a group photo for us, and even allowed us to stay a bit after closing so that we could finish catching up. I don't think this place needs any more reviews but this food was simply delicious . I Finnish my plate so fast before I could even look at it . Everything about the flavor sweet and savory just hit your flavor tongue . I order mine gorgeng combo which is stir fry egg noodle 2 chicken slate and a perkedel. The chicken slate is chicken on a skewer with delicious peanut sauce . And a perkedel is like a potatoe patty . Crispy on the outside but soft on the inside ! Soto ayam is amazingly tasting like in hometown. Very generous on chili. Sate is well seasoned and grilled to perfection. Pempek was large portion with the right texture of yellow noodles. Mr. Sate was my comfort food when I had a tough day and/or week and also when I just wanted some outstanding Indonesian food. It was there for me in the roughest part of the pandemic, made the cold nights a bit warmer and celebrated the different changes in the last year. I swear this isn't an ode to Mr. Sate (or is it?). I would say that Simpang Asia had other standout dishes, but Mr. Sate got the noodles, rice and obviously sate down. The combos are a great way to sample different dishes they offer. My favorites are: - Soto Mie: Complex flavors, hearty soup, different textures. I absolutely love this noodle soup! You can also mix the leftover soup with rice. -Nasi Goreng: Can't go wrong with a classic comfort dish that will make you wonder where your meal went at the end... -Mie Goreng: Noodles were fried to perfection with balanced sauce. -Babi Sate: My favorite sate out of all of them! The sauce is thick, sticky and sweet and it's grilled to perfection. Shockingly, this humble place has one of the 5-best dishes in the city. The place is neither upscale nor authentically pure Indonesian - its menu is inspired from around the region, and I'm normally quite suspicious of anything "fusion." We ate outside, with a view of Motor Ave. and a gas station, watching the cars motor by. After ordering at the counter and paying in advance, they brought the shrimp balado, and it was awful - not grilled as advertised, but boiled or steamed, with watery tomato pieces that were like canned tomato. Then I had the soto ayam, which was nicer - a homey soup that tasted like street food, with a perfectly-broiled egg in it, and a nice turmeric flavor that was warming and comforting and altogether pleasant. None of which prepared me for the NASI BUNKGUS. When I unwrapped the banana leaf, I kept putting my face in it to smell and smell again. I've had banana leaf dishes before, but this odor was so complex and fascinating, like the first time I had truffles. The dish was not only profound and complex, but every bite tasted of something different, like the fabled everlasting gobstopper. The beef was perfectly sauteed, and then there's a bit of kale that tastes like southern food, but woah, there's a perfectly-roasted egg, and holy moly, that turmeric chicken is better than any grilled chicken sold as a standalone, and is that cilantro, and that rice is of exactly perfect texture, and I just want to lick the plate and compose sonnets about the thing, and to kiss the chef on the cheek, no, on both cheeks, and do that NASI BUNKGUS dance, and later that night, a little belch comes out and I am happy because it reminds me of NASI BUNGKUS, and how can this little place who served such a lousy shrimp make something so completely, undeniably perfect? I try not to base other reviews and ratings as the deciding factor but it was a plus to see that Mr. Sate had a good rep in the Yelp community. There's a small garage parking that you can enter in an alley off Palms but we didn't know it was there so we found residential st parking ... depending on the time, you may get lucky with street parking. We ordered: Nasi Kuning (8/10), the rice was soft with a perfect balance of coconut milk and turmeric. Fried chicken was tasty! It's not a battered fried chicken, instead it's like rotisserie but fried. I was curious to see how the fried hard boiled egg was- nothing crazy special but definitely something you want to try. The potato fritter was a good side to the dish. Mie Goreng (7/10), can't go wrong with stir fry noodles and veggies! This dish was a great fix to my Mie goreng craving haha Chicken Sate (6.5/10), don't get it twisted but my rating is only because I had a chicken sate skewer in Singapore that blew my mind and I was hoping it would be similar to back home. with that said, the chicken Sate is still a flavorful dish! So please order it if you want to try. and Es Cendol (6/10), a dessert containing coconut milk, palm sugar, jackfruit, and I believe pandan jelly (?). Be careful if you have food allergies. We specifically asked if any of the dishes had peanuts, since I can go into anaphylactic shock, and the waiter told us that all the dishes were safe and that peanut sauce for the satay could be put on the side. The kitchen made a mistake and left peanut sauce on the satay, but since it was mixed with a different sauce and not obviously peanut sauce, I didn't realize and ate some. I started having a reaction and again asked if they were sure there were no nuts. He insisted that it was just chile and maybe garlic, and then upon pressing further, admitted that there was peanut sauce on the satay after all. He took no accountability and still tried to charge us for the meal at the end. The owner did apologize but made a lot of excuses. I spent the night in the ER as a result. Mistakes happen, but accountability should be the bare minimum given that they could kill someone with their negligence. read more

I've found my Indonesian spot! My husband and I visited Mr. Sate on a rainy, Friday night. There was only one other group in the restaurant when we arrived at around 6:30. We were greeted by the waiter immediately and prompted to sit at any table we'd like. I had a tough time choosing between the nasi goreng, mie goreng and nasi goreng combo. So, my husband ordered the mie goreng combo and I ordered the nasi goreng combo - these are the joys of marriage! Being able to try both the mie goreng and nasi goreng made my meal that much better. Both dishes were flavorful and filling. I don't think Indonesian in LA gets more authentic than Mr. Sate. If you're like me and are struggling between the mie goreng and nasi goreng combos, and your not able to convince someone to order one or the other to split with you, I'd recommend getting the nasi goreng if you're a rice person or the mie goreng if you love noodles. Delectable Indonesian food!! Came here for dinner on a Friday night and it wasn't too busy. The restaurant is located at the corner of a big building complex and theirs plenty of non meter street parking. The place is not too big with only a couple of tables for groups of four and the menu is pretty simple too. Since Im not too familiar with Indonesian food I was super excited to try anything! The sate dishes looked really good so I definitely wanted that and they also had soups and appetizers. I went with one of their combo dinners since it included a little bit of everything from the menu. I got combo #3 and it came with three sate squewers and soup. My bf also got combo #3 and we shared their peanut sauce salad. The salad came out first and it was amazing!! It was covered in a peanut sauce and it had shrimp chips. They had a very good house spicy sauce that I wanted them to bottle for me to take home!! It was so good!! I love spicy and this sauce had a great kick!! The sate came out next and I lost it! It was so good!! I got two sate of beef and one of potato. The beef had a line of peanut sauce OMG!! My coconut broth beef soup was also very flavorful and very tasty. I thought I hated sate until I tried Mr. Sate. It turns out, I had never had good sate, and Mr. Sate makes some of the best. That Chicken Sate is amazing, with juicy dark meat and a nutty soy glaze. It's rare that I would prefer chicken over beef, but the chicken is the best. The Beef Potato is still quite likable, though. It's dry-marinated for a more shredded texture, and has chili sauce to add some sting. Perkedel: what's not to like about mashed potato patties with a hint of meat and scallion? Just try to get them fresh from the fryer. My favorite is the Mie Goreng, a nest of egg noodles stir-fried with medium spice. Get it with corned beef for to add some fun. Soto Betawi is a rich and creamy broth of coconut milk and beef. It's comfort food at its finest, and adding some tendon worth the extra charge. They also make a decent Nasi Bungkus, a banana leaf-wrapped square of rice with turmeric chicken, beef rendang, and veggie curry. Finish up with some Lontong, sticky dipping-discs of rice cake that come with a thick peanut sauce. I took a much deeper dive into Mr. Sate's menu this visit, and what a journey it has been. I already liked Mr. Sate, and now I like him even more! 4 stars for the sate! read more
