I absolutely LOVE MSM Deli. Their sandwiches are stuffed with fresh ingredients, bread is soft, and they have tons of sizes to choose from. My usual order is the veggie with turkey added and only one serving of cheese. Parking lot outside. Lots of chips, drinks, and even cookies to choose from inside. Really solid sandwich place in Tacoma. There is currently no inside seating (it's clear that pre-Covid there used to be, but it's no longer open), so all orders are to-go/pick up. Ordering takes place outside at a window. The main attraction is, of course, the sandwiches. They have many options in both sandwich concoctions and sizes. We got a 6" Mike's Deluxe and a 9" Italian Cold Cuts and two sodas (all their drinks are bottled/canned; they don't have any fountain drinks, though they do have a great deal of drink options). The cashier warned us it was a 30 minute wait, so we hung out in the car with a pager. Most people had clearly ordered ahead of time and picked up their food--clearly the smarter way to do this. When we arrived, the parking lot was mostly full, and by the time we left, there were folks prowling for spots--keep this in mind if you go, espy during lunch. Our wait ended up being 40 minutes, and we took our sandwiches to a park to eat in the car. The quality of the ingredients was very high and the sandwiches were both very tasty. A lot of sandwich shops cut on quality or quantity, but we felt both were really good here. There's nothing unexpected in the sandwiches--no unexpected combination of flavors or bougie ingredients--but the sandwiches are still very good. The bread is fresh and has some substance to it, and the meats and cheeses were also high quality and very fresh. A 40-minute wait (on a Monday) is pretty steep, though, and given there's nowhere great to eat your food on site, and given that the parking is a mess, it's not quite a 5-star experience for me. Happened to be in Tacoma and decided to stop in to get a sandwich. Have not been there in years so I don't as excited. My excitement didn't last long. I stood in an order here line which was next to the pick up here line. There was one person handling both lines. There was a constant stream of people walking up to the pick up here line. They were first priority. I stood behind a woman who was working out a problem with her order which eventually ended up with a substitute vice a refund. I think I stood in line for close to 10 minutes, the guy behind me left. When the cashier finally was ready to take my order, he says, the wait time is 1 hour! What? I and others behind me walked out. Why could this not had been communicated with a sign vice standing in line waiting to be told that! This was our second time going here. Upon walking in, it gives you that family restaurant vibe and I love it. I'm always craving for a FRESH sub, and I was recommended this place. The first time I got the cold cut, and it was to die for. It's packed with veggies and all. This time I got the Italian sub and I wasn't a huge fan of it. For some reason, the bottom bun was soaked with the banana pepper pickle juice and it was so sour. My man's got the Philly and it was actually really good! I got the chili as well, and omg, It was so good! I wish they gave more. The small sample bowl was not it. The workers here are always so nice and welcoming. I'd definitely be back again! I'm changing my review of MSM. I went prior to Covid and it was amazing. Now it feels dirty and run down. The bathroom is dirty, there were wet towels all over the floor. The brisket sub was awful - I don't understand why it is on the menu. The bread toaster is old and smells like burnt toast that has never been cleaned out. I love finding straightforward shops that do exactly what they say and do it well. MSM had a parking lot which was a relief for me with my kiddo in tow. The menu had quite a few options, and they seemed pretty open to modifications from what I overheard. Service was quick and matter-of-fact and the person I ordered with was also happy to give recommendations to others in my group. I ordered the deli club and really enjoyed it. Bread was soft but not soggy and the flavor was delicious. Also loved the expansive options of chips and soda. It was kind of giving convenience store vibes, which I didn't expect just from hearing people recommend it so much. It feels like the kind of place you make a pit stop at, but wow is it worth it! I used to come here during college and when I visited it again recently, it was exactly as I remembered! The building isn't very flashy on the outside, but I've always liked their food. Their bread is pretty yummy and their sandwich ingredients are always fresh. MSM is open during COVID-19, but you have to order at the walk-up window and it is to-go only. When we ordered, we told them what kind of car we have and someone brought our order to us when it was ready. I like the Deli Club sandwich. It is a 6 inch French roll with turkey breast, bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, onions, avocado, tomatoes, sprouts, and mayo. The sandwich is pretty wide, so it is a generous portion for one person. Good place, I like it. Feels very home grown. When you first walk in you can't tell, but there is a full dining area off the right with about ten tables with 28ish seats available. The decor is plain but that's not what I come to a deli for. Also, I'm kind of an emo techno-age grungy 90s trash-mammal, so I find something comforting in the gray walls, vinyl floors, and the flickering fluorescent white lighting. Anyway, on the topic of service. I hit a pretty big rush when I came in. There are split lines for online-orders and in-store orders. You may have to wait a little bit, but please be patient. The staff are kind and hard working people, and the food is worth-it. The tipping system is outdated as hell, so bring cash or ask to tip when making your purchase. Or if you have the time and are weary of tipping before receiving your food, get a drink on the way out like I did. I forgot to include the tip during my first purchase and the person behind the counter said "don't worry about it, just worry about having a good rest of your day." Don't take advantage of good people The "deli-style" Reuben I ordered was incredible. I order Reuben's from any sandwich shop which offers one. This is the only deli which offered it deli-style. The best sandwich I have had in a hot-minute. It has mustard, mayo, onion, lettuce and tomato instead of the thousand island and sauerkraut. While I still appreciate the traditional, this is my new favorite way to eat this classic sandwich. Thank you for your service whoever crafted this delicacy. For those who care, yes, there is a bathroom, ask the counter for the code, you will have to make a purchase but that's to be expected.
