MSM is just so Tacoma to me. I drove past it without realizing there was food inside for years until someone gave me the address. Even then I drove past it a few times before I realized it was the place. It looks like a hole-in-the-wall on the outside and a truck stop off of Route 66 on the inside. During lunch-hour it gets so packed with people ordering their sandwiches you can barely find a dusty can of Campbell's to crouch next to. This plays rocks. I used to come here for lunch all the time during college and loved the Mike's Deluxe. You know it's a good joint when there is a consistent line to the door every time you walk in. Well, I've had a sandwich here twice and it's not the absolute best I've ever had in my life, but not disgusting either. Most recently, me and a friend came in here after a 45 mile ride. I definitely had a case of ordering way more than I could possibly eat as I ordered a 23" sub for the two of us. It was convenient that I could also get a bottle of Gatorade from the convenience store. Got the sandwich and it was... ok. Usually things taste freakin awesome when I'm starving, but really the sandwich was just ok. I believe it was a Mike's Deluxe. Had some errands to run in Tacoma today. My friend warned me this was no more than a little kwiki mart with a deli ( that's exactlly what it is). They are known for their sandwiches though. Based on the reviews I looked through I couldn't decide on a sandwich so I ordered a french dip which and a deli club ( plus ham) the french dip wasn't bad at all but Rizzos (RIP) was way better in my mind. MSM's was toasted and had some swiss cheese on it. It was served dry and the meat could have been a little juicier for me. The au jus was good. The deli club was written about below and they talked about the amazing avacodo spread. I saw some green spread stuff but there wasn't a ton of it. The lines for this place were long it probably took 10-15 minutes to get my sandwich and when I ordered there was only a few girls in line in front of me. As I waited a good 10 people shoed up to order and pick up more sandwiches. I liked this place and it was reasonable ( both sandwiches which for me will be two meals were 13 bucks). I think that Tubs in Seattle is equally as good. I'd come back if I were in Tacoma and if you're there you should check it out. read more

Our friends who live in Tacoma suggested we go here for sandwiches to take with us to The Dobbie Brothers concert at the Whiteriver Amphitheater. I had the 9" Deli Club with turkey, bacon, cheddar, mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, sprouts and avocado. It was killer...and HUGE! But my wife's Pocket Of Miracles was terrible! The pocket bread was seriously stale and resembled cardboard in texture and she said the chicken salad was totally tasteless. Not sure if I'll be able to talk her into returning, although I'm sure she'd be happier with a sandwich. Based on this experience, I'd suggest avoiding the pita/pocket bread sandwiches. My sandwich gets 5 stars, but my wife's pita gets only 1 star...hence, 3 stars overall. read more

I've been coming here for years and it never gets old! Italian is my mainstay. I've tried others and they are great but I love my cold cuts. You get a nice pickle with it, grab a bag of chips, a root beer, head down to the water front and have a little cut of heaven. This is a romantic lunch for me and the wife. It gets packed during the meals so if you are in a rush come back an hour later. Phoning it in helps but not by much when they are cranking out sandwiches like crazy. This sandwich shop defines the 4 years I spent living in Tacoma. It's not pretty in the least, especially since 6th Ave. started revolution. The inside is a bare bones market with some odd imported foods mixed with old school American snacks. The dining area (if you want to call it that) in the back is made up of mis-matched plastic furniture. It honestly looks like it was reclaimed from a meth lab. Looks aside, the sandwiches are out of this world. Mike's Deluxe is a go to deli classic. My personal favorites are the BBC (Beef, Bacon, Cheddar) and the BBQ Beef with melted cheddar. Honestly, this needs to be a landmark for the city of Tacoma. Their sandwiches are delicious, huge, and cheap. Growing up MSM was a household name and they've kept that reputation since! My husband and I get CRAVINGS for Mike's Deluxe. Pair it with a soda and bag of chips and you've got lunch for two days. It doesn't look like much from the outside but don't let that fool you! There's a reason they don't have to put much effort into the outside appearance, the food and word of mouth gets the job done. Great sub sandwiches! Very fresh tasting and large portion for such a small price around 8$. One "Mike's Deluxe" fed me and my girlfriend till we were full at the top of a nice hike up Poo Poo Point. So everything on here that people say is the truth. The sandwiches are great. The selection of beverages is fantastic. The setting is awful (converted convenience store with painted-over graffiti outside and dingy looking on the inside). And the wait time is stupid long. Let me give you an idea of how long it took me to get a sandwich yesterday (Sunday) at 130 pm. I ordered, walked to Walgreens to buy some stuff, then walked down 6th to Marrow to buy a gift certificate. When I walked back to MSM, I still had time to wait. Part of the wait time is because it's a popular place, but most of it is just their inefficiency. Both of my visits there have shown that they need to put some work into their operation to make it run smoother.
