The first thing you see when approaching the store is the beautifully constructed fish pond. It has statues around it and has koi fish. One of my favorite things to get here are these little green tea cakes with cream inside. I also love looking at their drinks. They also have so many different canned drinks! It's a nice place to go for some good snacks and some fresh ingredients for cooking. read more

I'm going to keep it real like Jlo in her cornrow stage years. Store is unorganized. -messy aisles, boxes in the way 100 PERCENT of the time when you're trying to reach for items on the racks. 7 times out of 10 the store stinks of spoiled produce and old seafood. I've bought raw oysters here 2 x's by the 8 ct. sac and the oysters are covered in slimy worm infested dirt. YES, I know worms on oysters is normal but this is too much and nasty. Trust me, I'm not squeamish I cook and eat all kinds of foods. If MT could just wash the dirt off their oysters before throwing them on ice ... that would be cool & maybe just maybe I'll buy oysters from MT again. When I do stop by, it's for veggies that I can't find anywhere else, imported beer and dry goods. That's it. read more

It seems like this place has been here forever, it is hard to believe it only opened around 2005. This entire area was once just a patch of dirt and scrub brush that was transformed into the first Asian food destination. Don't get me wrong there have always been great food spots all over town, but by developing this area they built a place where anyone could stop by and get a taste of something different. MT Supermarket is just that kind of place. It is HUGE! They have everything, a huge veggie section, fresh, like still swimming fish market, a meat market with butchers that will cut just what you need and nothing else, and of course all the dry goods and frozen food you could dream of. This place is not intimidating at all. If you are unsure about something all you have to do is ask and help is never far away! Stop in and try something new it is a really great store! read more

Y'all. I really like a large asian market and this one has an ample supply of asian ingredients. I am pleased with the wide selection and the things I need to cook Vietnamese food. With that being said, you need to go on a lucky day. I haven't figured out which day of the week is that because it seems pretty random, but a lucky day will have almost all selection of vegetables and herbs you need for summer rolls or pho. Speaking of pho, bones seems scarce. There were no pork bones in the meat department stand when I went today but I asked the worker behind the glass case and he had some in the back. So even if it is empty, just ask! Where are the dried prunes!? I crave for them every once in a while and 99 ranch seems to sell out of my favorite kind. You would think this market will have a large supply (it's written on the aisle sign TWICE) but no, NONE! They have other snacks for me at least. It's not the cleanest market but it smells like my childhood when I went to the asian market back in Houston. This will be my go to place as it isn't expensive at all. This place can be overwhelming, but take your time and go down all the aisles if you need to...get a translate app and take pictures of things you aren't sure of. We got some ramen, frozen buns and dumplings and sauces and condiments here. I am not sure if I would ever buy their meat or seafood even though some of it looks ok - there are just things I don't want to roll the dice on. But it's all cheap! This one is better stocked than Hana World Market in my opinion and the cashiers are always friendly. Definitely my go-to grocery store when I'm in Austin. It's conveniently located on the bus route and in close proximity to where I typically stay. One of the biggest perks is that a lot of variety in terms of products in the store. The shelves are always stocked and I can almost always find what I'm looking for here (even some of the most obscure recipe items) for a good price. They also have some pre-prepared items like Vietnamese desserts, small portions of popular dishes, and now onigiri which is great if you need food on the go. Every now and then it does get very crowded and things get very disorganized, but that's quite normal for most grocery stores. On the weekends it can get quite chaotic, but I've yet to run into any real issues. Everything is reasonably priced and some of the prices are hard to beat. This store is definitely better than average, and I couldn't imagine myself going anywhere else other than H-Mart around here. read more

My office was relocated up near Braker in November 2019. I rely on transit, and I live in South Austin, so my commute grew exponentially. So suddenly I was looking for other supermarket options. The one good thing was suddenly I was a lot closer to great Asian restaurants, and MT supermarket as well. The selection is dizzying. The produce is fantastic; with a lot of common veg as well as things more likely to be used in Asian dishes. Like baby bok choy? Sooo much more affordable. They also have live fish. Not something I can easily bring across town on a bus, but I sure wish I could. There's a wide selection of fresh and shelf-stable products, and much, much more than you likely expect. read more

Amazing. Thank you Austin, although I do love HMart - this is a familiar place for me. Who doesn't love a crowded filled to the brim oriental store chock full of all Asian cultures from the east to the west! Sooooo much Pinay/Pinoy happy here! When you walk in you are greeted with rows of hopia & deserts. Tons of Filipino food in the freezer (pretty much an entire row) & pretty much a whole aisle dedicated to dry goods. Bear with me here, if you are not Filipino the next paragraph might not make sense & if it doesn't write down these snacks - they are so delicious! There's also fresh local baked goods like ensaymada (with ube!), biko (coconut milk & rice desert), & even bibinka (rice cake steamed in banana leaves)! I walked in & was greeted by a table chock full of hopia ube (bean-filled moon cake-like pastry filled with ube which is a purple yam)! I was also greeted to my delight with Bangus (milkfish) in the freezer section, a lot of it! Along with tons of ready made tocino (though it won't compare to my dad's recipe), hopia, & siopao. The biggest happy was in the dry goods aisle, they had pilipit - basically a deep fried twisted pastry which is coated with sugar - I haven't had that dessert since I was 12. They also have a wide variety of Magnolia ice cream, reasonably priced (it is what it is). This place is filled with sooooo many things. It's a little bit overwhelming, but I now know if I'm homesick for my parents cooking, at least I can pick up the ingredients locally here. They don't allow customers to bring backpacks in the store to avoid stealing, which I understand. However, if they are going enforce this rule, they should at least provide lockers for customers to lock their stuff away while shopping. I sometimes stop by MT market after work, so I have my backpack with (expensive) work laptop and other stuff, and I don't feel comfortable leaving all that in my car so I bring the backpack with me. The security guy stopped me, told me to leave my backpack on the floor in a corner (and I am supposed to believe he's going to watch it constantly??). MT is a great place to find fresh seafood and obviously, Asian food items. Whenever I come into Austin, I try to make a side trip before I head back for S.A. We do have our Asian markets in S.A. but none to this extent. There are plenty of instant noodle choices to make. Vermicilli, glass noodles, yaki soba, pansit... very comparable to what you'd find in Chinatown in Houston. I like how some aisles are broken into items from specific countries (although unless you're familiar with what comes from where or just read the labels, you probably won't notice it too much). Really good selection though. And the prices are about the same as if you went to a 'mom and pop' store. read more

Be prepared to encounter what offshore fisherman live with every day. But once you've been in there for awhile you really won't notice the gods awful fishy smell unless you have gone in for seafood. It cannot be escaped in that area of the store. The vegetarian meat substitutes in this place are amazing...I'd have never thought to make a meatless version of even half the things they have. I cannot get Vegetarian Ham "loaf" anywhere nearby anymore so when I take a trip to my sister's up here it's a *must*. The vegetarian cup o noodles are the *BEST* ever! They have great flavour and variety and aren't as horribly salty as regular Raman. Delicious cookie and candy treats of all shapes and sizes! It's big and it has lots of things... but not enough of the right things. I think it's definitely an Asian supermarket, not a Chinese one. Even though Hong Kong is a lot smaller I find a lot more of the "right" brands there. They do have a lot of variety, but much of it is superficial or useless. I mean really, how many brands of soy sauce/noodles do you really need? And yet they only have two or three brands of five spice, when that varies a lot more by brand. So... good, not great... it's more like a lot of ethnic supermarkets under one roof than one big Chinese supermarket. read more

A pretty big supermarket to get all my Asian grocery needs! Aisles and aisles of authentic food spanning from all Asian countries right in this grocery store. From noodles to soy sauce to fresh fish, you name it! I like coming here for all the essential ingredients to my meal recipes that you either can't get at a regular supermarket or are usually pretty costly if you do find them at local supermarkets. They do get packed here on the weekends but it's not like Walmart where only 2 checkout lanes are open. It's pretty busy but check out is pretty quick and the store is fairly organized and easy to navigate. read more

Pros: Lots of products that I like to buy, all in one space! Cons: Couldn't find a couple of dim sum items (Turnip Cake, Fried Taro) and wish they had some fresh roasted duck or chicken to buy. Nested in Chinatown Austin, it is big for its size as an Asian supermarket. They have almost everything here for your Vietnamese/Chinese groceries. On the weekends, you can see a lot of Asian families here which makes it feel like a home away from home. Regarding prices, I do think a lot of prices here are more expensive compared to what I'm used to. This is probably due to a lack of competitors in Austin. I've noticed some of fruits aren't as fresh as I've would've hope. Regardless, I'm still super glad MT exists in Austin and provides some things regular supermarkets don't carry! read more

MT still has the best selection of general Asian goods, and their prices are reasonable on most items. Vegetables are much more competitively priced now that 99 Ranch is nearby. Although MT is a bit far from where I live, I like being able to drop by and purchase unique items such as small red bean moon cakes and boiled peanuts for tasty snacks. Yum! read more

Auntie's around Austin again :) We randomly make trips here for Japanese and/or Korean snacks. Not much else really. Unless we're in the area and we need to pick up some groceries stat. MT isn't on top of our list but they'll do in a pinch. No big whoop. Han Yang Market and Hana World Market are the go-to locations for the family 'til HMart opens....btw, that'll be a game-changer for this entire area. Yup. Can. Not. Wait. Let's get back to the topic of snacks at MT. 'Twas a delight to see the Samyang spicy jjaldduck snack (online spelled zzaldduck). Mah current fave "chips". Mmmm, the sweet treats with a lingering tasty burn. Nothing extreme. Sweet-n-burny.....good combination. Ev-er-y-day. Found the customary medley of Hi-Chew flavors too....don't get me started with their fizzies - BroS and BroE were curious. Glad they were. They scored! Pop of fun flavor but hard to find 'round these parts so good luck y'all. Givin' props to MT for selling some of the Texas Bakery pastries. Uber convenient (TB is in this shopping center too). Really, really huge Asian market, which I checked out with Austin native friends who learned I had a thing for grocery stores. I've lived in and visited many cities with large Southeast and East Asian communities and have been to other stores reminiscent of this one before, but this one was especially large and crowded mid-day on a weekend. The seafood and meat sections stood out the most to me since I saw products I hadn't seen before-- baby octopus, for example. I can imagine shopping here for produce and imported snacks I might not see in more American-focused grocery stores if I lived in Austin, or if I were seeking adventurous new ingredients to try cooking with for sure, but otherwise, the prices and selection seemed pretty typical for a market like this one. read more

Long time customer of MT Market. I feel that it's time to leave an honest review. First of all, the store, especially the freezer section, is very disorganized, there's really no system. Same product would appear in different places. Prices are often incorrect due to re-stocking the wrong item in place. Secondly, they don't handle the perishables properly before placing on shelves. Today I purchased a gallon of soybean milk with expiration 2 weeks away but the entire gallon is curd. Last time was a brick of tofu and the fried tofu. Lastly, service is the worse you can expect, that is, no service. I forgot to bring bags so I asked for boxes. The cashier told me to walk down to register 2 to get them myself while the bagger stood there and waited. read more

We shop at MT almost as much as we go to HEB. Okay, maybe not THAT much. Their produce is fresh most of the time and there's always a wide variety. Their meat market is good with fresh selections. Try their ground pork and compare it to HEB's. You'll see it has less fat and is leaner. Everything else in the middle of the store (non-perishable items) are good too. I feel very blessed to have this place not too far from our home. read more

I have been in Austin for 3 months after a move from San Francisco. In San Francisco, my diet mainly consisted of Asian foods and shopping at Asian markets and bakeries. Down here, my diet consists of tacos. And more Mexican food. When I walked into MT, I felt like I was home. It was exactly the type of Asian market I am used to, they had everything I could possibly need. Minus one thing - peanut oil. Apparently peanut oil is only used in bulk down here for frying turkeys.... Anyway, thanks to MT, I'm back in the game - making sushi on a weekly basis and enjoying all my delightful Asian condiments. On one hand, I don't go PETA after seeing catfish thrown around and clubbed to death, but it makes me squeamish, and I don't like squeamish. On the other hand, I like to reminisce about New Orleans occasionally, and every so often I want a sua nong, so I keep chicory coffee around just to know it's there and available. The only reason MT Supermarket exists in my world is their price for Cafe Du' Monde is the cheapest in Austin, and quite possibly on the planet Earth. They often have fun events like the dragon lion dance. There are rumors that their beef isn't USDA grade, but we don't buy meat here. They have a good selection of vegetarian hotpot choices. This Asian market was an entertaining and great experience. I've only been to 4 or 5 Asian markets in Austin and I've had mixed results. This one is definitely the largest I've been to and it had a great variety of items. There was a good selection of produce and the prices were very reasonable. In fact, most of the items we looked at store-wide were very reasonably priced. The fish and meat departments were really interesting. The fish area smelled like the ocean so I had no issue, but I noticed some people were a little put off by it. The fish were packed in their tanks, but they needed a large supply to keep up with the demand. I saw a lot of fresh fish being bought. The meat department had a lot of cuts that were slightly different than at the local chain market. I liked that you could buy your pork with the skin still attached or without. I liked having the option. There were some great looking cuts that I would have bought if we had been going home after, just have to wait till next time. The staff was courteous and the variety of different items and flavors was great. Chinese, Thai, Korean and many more flavors were all represented. We'll definitely be back. read more

I was surprised to learn that Austin actually has a "Chinatown" (well, more like a Chinese shopping center). Well, to be perfectly precise, it's an eclectic mix of stores and shops that is conveniently marketed as a "Chinatown;" but, in fact, it's a strip center that features a few Chinese restaurants (but that's mostly rounded out by Vietnamese businesses of one sort or another). The anchor store is the MT Supermarket (which is located smack dab in the middle of the strip). Really, it's like the vast majority of Asian supermarkets (with the usual aisles dedicated to dried goods, teas, sauces, sweets, seafood, and fresh produce). As I walked around the store recently, I felt as if I were in very familiar surroundings (yes, having shopped at countless such groceries). However, even as I purchased lemongrass, ginger, star anise, Sichuan peppercorns, cod filets, and a jar of X.O. sauce as if by rote, I couldn't help but take note of one prominent feature of the store (and, that's the really well stocked kitchenware department that it has - one that has a huge selection of various pots, pans, and steamers). I was genuinely surprised to see restaurant grade stock pots, Lao rice steamers (for making sticky rice), Thai earthernware mortar and pestles, and Thai style pots and steamers (those with the distinctive jutting handles on the sides with the black grips). Really, this staggering selection (of pots, especially) would bring a smile to any street stall owner back in Bangkok or any serious cook who specializes in making pho or ramen broth). Truly, I've never even seen such a vast array (not even at any of the countless restaurant supply stores that I've visited and snooped around in New York City). Indeed, I was impressed to say the least. I mean, here I am in Austin; and, I'm finding things that I couldn't easily find even in Manhattan or Queens (and, certainly, not back in DC). Love, love, love this store. Great fresh produce, live fish, canned goods, noodles, rice, frozen dumplings, coffee and tea. I also love that one can eat in any of the amazing restaurants sharing space in this shopping center, then get groceries on a supremely full stomach. Tip 1: Buy in bulk. I love way far south from here, so buying cases of tofu and Cafe Du Monde make sense for me. Ask, and staff may take the tax off your bulk purchases (they did for me). What's a more recession-proof purchase than a case of delicious coffee? Tip 2: Explore the veggie options. Mock duck and the like are hugely available here, in the frozen sections. Grab some won ton skins or spring roll wrappers and cook something at home. A bag of frozen veggie dumplings for $3 feels like a steal. Tip 3: Don't overlook the sake selection. Tip 4: Try a new kind of noodle or rice. Red rice cooks a lot faster than brown, has lots of fiber, and is way tasty. Tip 5: Fully explore the condiments, sauces, and seasonings aisles. So many gems lurk here. The only item I searched for and could not find here was soup paste for tom kha kai, which I eventually bought online. But anyone with some good knife skills can buy everything for that at MT Supermarket: just get galang, lemongrass, and kaffir lime leaves, mix with coconut milk, broth, tofu, cilantro and chili and wham. Soup. Galang is really hard to chop though! read more
