The cafe has a nice feel to it when you enter. A young blonde-haired barista greets me with a smile and there is a large board of offerings. College students are abundant. Wood counters, cabinets, and tables surround you and pleasant music is playing. Strangely, there was only a hint of coffee smell in the air. After being briefly tempted by the array of cakes, muffins, and cinnamon twists, I turned to the list of coffees. I was hoping to order an Ethiopian, but was informed that I was looking at the list of beans and there was only one coffee of the day. Furthermore, they did not have breakfast on Tuesdays -- only bagels. I reluctantly ordered a plain bagel with strawberry jam and a Minty Mocha, a mixture of hot chocolate, espresso, and mint syrup. I was pleasantly surprised by the crispy exterior of the plain bagel I had been forced to eat. The bagel had the hint of garlic and onion typical of bagels that are cut on a board with their spicier cousins, adding flavors not requested but nonetheless savored. The Minty Mocha was chocolatey sweet but didn't have much of an espresso punch. Still, I could have ordered another one. For those toting laptops, there was free wi-fi, though I had to ask around to get the password. As I started to put my laptop on the table, I saw the unforgiving sign: "No LAPTOPS at this table at any Time. Please sit at the Bar." At the bar, I found myself pressed against the person next to me. I had to do my work sitting on a bar stool facing a kitchen, quite uncomfortable. Today was absolutely gogeous, and the perfect day to try the Mudd Puddle out! (Just so you know, they only take cash--but there is an ATM inside if you need it). I swear walking in there I saw Aya Cash walking out ("Callie" from Fox's Traffic Light), but this is still in debate. But, no matter. Celebrities of not; the food, beverages, and staff are all fantastic! I tried the coconut chai tea iced, and I couldn't believe how good it was. I rarely make food or drinks last, but I made sure that lasted as long as possible, because it was amazing. It was under "daily specials" on the menu, but I really hope they keep it around. And, I also tried the Grilled Italian panini with feta-which was absolutely delicious. They have tons of outdoor seating (it's a busy little square) and the table card numbers are made from old "UNO" cards haha ;) Very cute. (And, ps, guys upstairs? Service is awful. Lots of cyclists and people rushing in to get their morning coffee but staff can't seem to get it together. Seems very unorganized. Throw in a few breakfast orders and yikes! Took forever to get 2 eggs and toast (which were fine if not overly greasy). Kind of a bummer because it's a great location with a nice little outdoor spot to stare out into the mountains. read more

all i wanted was a latte... the staff was extremely rude & stuck up to the point that neither i or the group i was with purchased anything. they seemed to be annoyed to have to talk at all, it was incredibly off putting. realistically, all i wanted was to grab a drink. even after the attitude that was given to a friend, i went on to look at the menu only to then notice the man at the register giving me the dirtiest look- so i decided to leave. wish i could've tried the espresso, wish the employees weren't so awful that i had to come on yelp and complain about it but hey, it happens. read more

Whenever I go here they're always Out of everything...out of turkey, out of Chai, out of sides other than salad, out of bagels, out if mint green tea...what do they have? It's almost like begging. Do I come too late? They don't have a highchair (it broke and was never replaced). The counter service is noncommittal. In experienced or nonchalant, I can't decide. If it wasn't for the location we would never go...the food is decent but simple leaving something to be desired and a lack of vegetarian options. Just one sandwich... Grilled veggies. Located in the Water Street Market, Mudd Puddle seems promising as a cute coffee spot, tucked in the back near the antique barn. Unfortunately we haven't had the best experiences but decided to give it one last try. The coffee and tea selection is overwhelming and incredibly promising. During our last and final visit, we ordered iced drinks to go only to find out they were out of straws and very low on ice. We ordered an espresso-based drink only for them to tell us that the espresso machine was broken. We understand things happen from time to time but we have given Mudd Puddle a few chances for redemption and never succeed. The name itself sounds adorable! Mudd Puddle is located right in the Waterstreet Market off of Main Street. It's rustic, natural look attracts many customers, local and visitors alike. Chalkboard menus and funky artwork makes this place fun to be. I've had their freshly brewed teas/coffees, hot apple cider, chai lattes, cookies, bagels and more. Every time I visited here, I've always had an enjoyable experience. I wish there was more seating since the place is so popular! On this hot day, a store with A/C serving iced coffee was empty! But that was ok with us, because we got served tasty drinks and chocolate chips cookies right off the pan. Rustic wood beams paired with coffee bags makes for the decor in this small shop. You can see the coffee roaster right by the cash register. For two drinks and two cookies, our total was $5.50 with tax. I was so surprised because where I'm from large iced coffees cost that alone!! Stopped here on a very busy Saturday afternoon for lunch. They were out of the turkey and some of the sides. I had the chicken saled melt with a side of red cabbage slaw. The sandwich was very filling and chicken saled fresh and tasty. The slaw was fresh as well. It took me some years to wander down to Mudd Puddle for breakfast, having gone to Bacchus or Main Street Bistro (both of which I love for breakfast) instead. What I love about the place is how basic it is. You have a guy manning 4 saute pans just making breakfast for everyone. Plus you have bagels, scones, muffins and great coffee. Pair that with sitting outside at Water Street Market on a nice day and breakfast at Mudd Puddle is a treat. I especially love getting some kind of breakfast burrito, which change weekly. This spot is so well-placed in a very quaint area of local shops that one would have expected it to be outstanding. Sadly, not only is it not great, it's not good, it's even worse than bad. This place takes no pride at all in its espresso and has no awareness of what good coffee means to people who care about it. The staff is, in a word, awful. The latte that they made began as a weakly tamped collection of ground beans in the portafilter basket, guaranteeing a substandard extraction. Sure enough, when the two single shots were poured, they virtually burst out of the funnels on either side of the portafilter, thin and weak and overextracted. Worse still, the shots were poured into DIRTY GLASSES, still encrusted with the remains of old espresso. This was disgusting and the first time in the hundreds of espresso/coffee houses I've visited that I've seen such terrible attention to the quality of the coffee. Finally, the latte was presented with no style whatsoever, with the foam simply poured in with the same lack of care that exemplified the crappy extraction. Even adding two tablespoons of sugar could not win back the flavor of this brown, muddy swill from the the grip of utter failure. It tasted like dirt. Avoid this place if you care about coffee and espresso; go to Kingston instead, and once there head to Monkey Joe or to Hudson Valley Coffee Trader. There, the espresso is almost world-class, naturally sweet. The Mudd Puddle is true to its name, and the staff there really do believe that what they are serving is mud and not one of the best beverages known to humankind. read more

There's plenty of outdoor seating, limited indoor seating, and partially protected from the elements seating on the back porch. Amble along the Rail Trail and make time to stop in and experience the best part of New Paltz. Waterstreet Market is a dog friendly (leashed) and has places for bikes as well. A handy stroll off the end of Main Street, it's laid back, more comfy than the other coffee shops and the couple who run it are very nice too. They do gigs and other events as well. But mostly I liked turning up, the smell of roasted coffee (they roast right there) and plonking down in an arm chair with my cup of joe. read more
