The good: the onion rings. The horrible: the tenderloin. First off, that isn't a tenderloin but rather a fritter that came right out of the freezer. I took about 5 bites and couldn't eat any more of it. It's disappointing that so many people say great things about it when you can easily drive to a dozen or more places in the Indy area that take the time to make a proper tenderloin in-house. Tasty place with a days gone by feel. The gigantic Root beer float in the to go cup was quite literally the best I have ever had and I could have finished another 32 ounces! As reported the onion rings are really good and the standard size is more than enough for two, so save there and order the apple fingers for dessert. Both the burger and the corn dog were as expected. Great for kids, I will definitely take my son if we are ever in Indy to catch the 500. There are only a couple locations to eat in Indy that make me feel nostalgic at all, most of my favorite spots as a kid have closed since I was a young patron with my dad, BUT, Mug n Bun is still pimpin' the west side and keeping their pimp hand stronger than ever. Service is great, shakes rule and food rules. Most importantly though... The root beer, fools. I think anw or barges root beer is the equivalent of sucking diarrhea from a buffaloes arse and in general just hate root beer, but THIS root beer is THE root beer. To call it life changing is no stretch of truth to how much it opened my black heart up to a new world of soda. FOOD SERVICE FARE Mug 'N Bun has fallen prey to the food services or so it seems. Having started out breading tenderloins and making root beer from scratch at my first job, I am saddened to see these family owned, independent restaurants give way to prepared, processed frozen foods from one or two big services. They could make a lot more money and be a lot more popular if they'd do a little of their food prep themselves... but it requires work and inventory management. read more

Not as good as I remember as a kid. The fried cauliflower was pretty tasty, but the root beer the last 2 visits tasted suspiciously diet flavored even after asking for an exchange. Also I was charged twice for my order and had to dispute the charges with my bank. Mug N Bun has gone downhill. Ate in the Dine-In house tonight. Got our drinks and food quickly, but we were missing pickles and tartar sauce, and the hot dogs were room temperature. We asked the server for them. After waiting 15 minutes for server to bring the condiments, I went up to the main building. I asked a server there to get me the condiments. She asked who was my server, and I pointed him out since he just got around to our request. His face turned red, and he promptly turned around and left. No condiments. The other server asked the kitchen staff for them. After 5 more minutes of waiting I asked to talk to the manager. He apologized, but then he just stood there staring at me. Still no pickles or tartar sauce. I had to ask him if he was going to give them to me, and then he finally reached around the counter and gave them to me. Our original server never spoke to us again. It is clear the owners no longer manage the place. There were no experienced staff as far as I could tell. A bunch of teenagers and college students running the place. Save your money- not the same place I knew growing up. Too bad - this was our summer go-to place. read more

My family is on vacation in Indy to take the kids to the zoo and museum. I read some great reviews about Mug n Bun so we decided to give it a try. Sadly we were fairly disappointed by it. I got the tenderloin which is built up to be great but it seemed to just be a frozen average tenderloin. The burger was a basic frozen burger as well. It was good but we just felt that it did not live up to the hype. On a great note the root beer was excellent. Overall it was a fine place to eat but not all it was built up to be. read more

I took my grandchildren there for dinner. I ordered the catfish dinner and it was nasty. It looked good but when I took my first bite I had to spit it out. I took my fork and pulled the fillets apart for a closer look and found out why, the catfish fillets still had the skin of the catfish intact. I grew up in a river town and helped skin many catfish, the reason you skin them is because the skin of the catfish is similar to that of an eel, which is think, slippery and strong. All catfish must be skinned before cooking. Then to top off this horrible meal, I was overcharge by $5.00. I asked them to deduct the overcharge of $5.00 from my bill , but when I looked at my card charge, they did not. I will never go there again. read more

Food is good; all of it fried. The root beer is awesome so make sure everyone gets a big cup or your men/boys will steal yours. My issue? It can get expensive. Since Mug N Bun is just down the street from work, you would think I would go more often. But I don't because I feel guilty. You can't put a tip on your credit card. The servers only can take cash tips and lose their smile when I don't give them a tip. Which makes sense. I don't know how they can make a living with most of us paying by credit card. Perfect Hoosier dive food. I had no idea how big the cheeseburger was when I ordered. Had I know I wouldn't have bothered ordering fries. Excellent Root beer. My mom got a tenderloin and when she held it up it was as big as her face. I remember coming here to the drive in portion as a kid and the carry out breasted chicken shack in the back. But now they bought out the house next door and made it indoor climate controlled dining which is nice on a muggy Indiana summer day. It does get a little loud in the dining room though because the acoustics are like a barn. Also, my step mom recommends the onion rings. I am looking forward to coming back. read more

This place is a hoot. Not sure how I grew up in Indy and didn't hear of it until long after I'd moved away. The menu is a fast-food lovers paradise. The menu is painted on the wall, and it's big. All kinds of burgers, fried oysters, the requisite Hoosier tenderloin, even a chuckwagon sandwich. I have no idea what it is, but on this menu, the word 'chuckwagon' makes sense. I had a grilled cheese, jalapeno poppers and a root beer. The food was delicious -- for fast food. I think this meal probably took about 8 months off my life but I enjoyed it so much, I didn't really care. Agree with some of the other reviews that the root beer is too sweet. I think they could use about 1/2 the sugar and it would still taste yummy. I went on a rainy winter day so we had to eat in the car. Next time I'm going in the summer where we can sit on the cute deck. Couple of things to note -- CASH only. And, it's SUPER cheap. read more

Things are going down hill at the Mug. We always try to get over to Mug N Bun at least once or twice a year for tenderloins, onion rings and root beer, but our last experience has convinced me to give Edwards a shot next time. First, there was garbage everywhere. In the parking lot, on the floor in the outdoor eating area, and on the tables. The wind picked up, and suddenly, we were in the middle of a trash tornado. Not that it mattered because we never did get any food. We sat at a dirty table for almost 15 minutes, and no one even acknowledged that we were there. There were 4 tables with people at them, and 4 or 5 people eating in cars. Just about everyone there had already had food, and there were 3 waitresses, so it's not like they were extremely busy. We eventually left, and ate at Jimmy Johns. I won't be going back there any time soon. read more

Have wanted to try them for a long time. Boy was I disappointed. Found out the tenderloins are not hand breaded so passed on that. Too many good places in Indy to get an excellent breaded tenderloin. Ordered the cheeseburger. Bun was cold, hamburger was lukewarm which leads me to believe they are cooked ahead of time and warmed up for an order. We went here on a Friday at lunch time and even with a crowd had quick service. The root beer is to die for. Even non root beer lovers will enjoy. We got the pork tenderloin and a catfish sandwich. I have been going to this restaurant for many years. We went there on Friday 5/24/13 for a quick lunch. We ended up sitting inside the restaurant, the building across the parking lot. First we got our menu's and was seated. 5 minutes later, we got this young girl and she approached rudely and took our order. You can tell she was not very friendly and was not happy to be there. We get our order in but we waited for a long time before we got our meal. My friend and I each got a footlong. He got one with chili sauce and I got mine with cheese only. He got fries with his and I got onion nibbles with mine. After about 20 minutes, we finally got our food. Our waitress brings our food and slams the tray down the table and walked off. Didn't ask if we needed anything else. The food was cold, the bun was hard, the fries and onion nibbles was cold. The only thing was good was the root beer. Then we sat there for along time waiting for our check. She never brought our check. So we had to go up the counter and again we were treated rudely by her at the counter. I have been working in the restaurant business for over 8 years and I have never have encountered by a rude employee. I think Mug n Buns needs to retrain their staff on customer service. I am willing to give them another chance because this restaurant is one of the oldest in Indy. If this employee behavior continues, I hate to say, this restaurant will not last much longer. read more

When we had visitors in town and were looking for classic Indy food and activities, this place came highly recommended. We ate here after touring the Motor Speedway over the summer. You can do the drive in or the walk up and sit on the patio. We sat on the patio and had to ask another patron how to call the waitress--"buzz her on the box!" Fun family atmosphere but a little run down. We ordered the tenderloin, onion rings, fries and root beer. The tenderloin was flopping over the edges of the bun, which our guest wasn't so happy about, but I guess that's the way it's done. The onion rings were huge and hand battered. we had leftovers of everything, except the root beer. Best root beer ever! I had the float, which was awesome! I hadn't had a root beer float in a long time, but I'll probably compare them all to Mug N Bun's from now on. The root beer is home made and sweeter than most. We even took home a gallon jug, which was a bit much, but would also make great popsicles when flat. read more

This place was so much of a let down after having been told by others that it was great. First off, The place was not what I would call clean. It was run down and had old furnishings that needed cleaning also.. The only cool thing about the decor was the neat retro signs on the walls. The paper menu was very confusing. I had to ask the harried waitress what were the differences in the hamburgers that were listed. There were no explanations about any of the items on the menu. I ordered the mug n bun special. for $3.20. I then asked if that came with fries and she said that no but you could get the combo basket for, and she pointed at the price with her finger on the menu, and it was $3.60. Which included fries and either cole slaw or cottage cheese. I said that that sounded good and asked if I could get the sweet potato fries with that or would it be more money. She said no, it wouldn't cost more she would let them know. Now mind you, this particular burger that I ordered was supposed to be a single, (hamburger patty), cheese and bacon. I then added the "basket" which was fries and a slaw. I noticed on the menu that if you wanted tomato, it would cost 50 cents, if I wanted lettuce, it would cost 50 cents if I wanted any other condiment it would be 50 cents a shot. WOW! I just asked for mustard and onion which were free. When the food arrived it was in a timely manner but that was the end of anything good about this place. The burger was on toasted white bread, the hamburger patty, and believe me when I tell you that I am not exaggerating, but I am not exaggerating, was one teeny-tiny line over and eighth of an inch thick! Not kidding. If I were to put a light behind it I believe you would be able to see the light. It was cooked to oblivion and not warm at all. It had gristle in it for gosh sakes!! It was horrible. Now on to the sweet potato fries. They were served in a medium sized food tray and there were barely enough fries there to fill a small bag of fries at McDonalds! So the tray looked 3/4 empty. Then after trying one, I find out that they buried them in cinnamon sugar! Who puts cinnamon sugar on sweet potato fries without letting the customer know?!?! (back to the point about nothing being explained on the menu). They were somewhat edible after taking some of the sugar off. I could only handle 2 bites of the hamburger leather though. The coleslaw was of the store bought, over sweet, not edible type. So I just pushed that off to the side. When I got up to leave,the waitress asks me if I'd like a take home bag and I was nice and said no. After all this was costing me $3.60. No need to be nasty. Now on to the best, er no, the worst part of the experience. I go to pay for this disaster and I get out a $5.00 bill figuring this would pay for the meal and most of the tip. I go up to the register and am told that my bill was $7.47!!! What!!! I say! No way. The waitress told me that this would be $3.60 with the fries and the slaw. The cashier says no, you had the basket and that makes it $7.47 with tax. I am totally flabbergasted! Now, I'm angry. 1st, I'm told one price an am charged double for completely inedible food!! That's when things kinda went down hill. I told her that was ridiculous to double the price on someone for completely inedible food! She was snipey back to me and was not going to change anything, so I paid and left and figured I would warn people via Yelp!! There was nothing good about this place at all.
