Mug N Bun is hailed as having a great tenderloin, but let me tell you, it's pure crap. A true tenderloin is a solid piece of actual meat, not the processed fritter assembled in a flat and round form and breaded like the garbage they serve here. If you like a flat breaded equivalent of a hot dog, this is the sandwich for you. I always recommend asking the restaurant if their tenderloins are hand cut, pounded, and breaded in house. Any place that does this will serve a much better sandwich than this crap. The rest of their food is fine, but I just want people to quit calling this a "great" sandwich. read more

Came here on the rec from Roadfood, Jan and Michael Stern's superb website about where to find local eats that are a cut above Applebee's and Burger King. Driving from Chicago to Lexington, this was the perfect spot to satisfy our hunger- easy access to the Interstate, right off the road to Indianapolis Speedway, where those of us who mourn the loss of Mid Century Ma & Pa eateries can seek solace. I'd come here just for the Root Beer, but everything on the menu is as good as you would expect from a car-hop inspired, old style fry house. read more

This our favorite drive in restaurant in Indy. The food is hot and fresh and nothing beats a Mug n Bub Root Beer.

The food was good, especially the onion rings, and the funnel cake fries. If I got the cheeseburger again, I would probably at least get a double because the typing to meat ratio was more like a salad. The service was also very quick. My one complaint. They had signs for Coca Cola. However when I ordered coke, I was asked if Pepsi was ok. No. Pepsi is never ok. They slightly redeemed themselves by having Dr Pepper, but -1 star for asking if Pepsi was ok when Coke was advertised. read more

I've only been to Mug-n-Bun once this summer. I do enjoy it very much. I usually get a couple of chili dogs and the onion rings. Their onion rings are some of the best that I ever had in my life. I dream of those onion rings. I am sad I haven't be able to make it over there much this summer. One thing I would ask (PLEAD AND BEG) them to do is start carrying saurkraut. read more

I love the food here but some of the waitresses are rude af!! First of all I can see you roll your eyes before you come to my car and get my order !! And when I call something in for pick up what makes you think you get a tip honey? You didn't do anything but take my card!!! I'm not lying when I say this server last night 8/14/18 at 7 pm came to bring me my card then proceeded to stand there with her hand out. When I said what else do you need she walked away all shitty it really killed my mood because I called it in just so I didn't have to tip because I don't have cash! This mama is taking her food home and eating it there. I really like mug n bun but I won't be eating there for awhile because of last night! Luckily my food was good like always but they need to something about these little girls thinking they need a tip for swiping my card and giving me my food. Friendly old fashioned drive up service, with great food. If you are looking for a great burger joint and don't mind a total dive, this is a perfect choice. The service is fast. The shakes, fries and burgers are really good, and the onion rings are some of the best I have ever had. I like to try the local foods from new cities I visit, and I had heard that Mug 'n Bun was the spot for the infamous Hoosier Breaded Tenderloin Sandwich. It was my first time trying this food, and I gotta say, it was unremarkable. It had a weird texture (sort of like it was ground meat), little flavor, and was oddly dry (you'd think if it was fried, it would be moist). The onion rings were awesome! They are huge, fresh, and well seasoned with a wet batter. The catfish platter was OK, nothing that we would try again, and the fries were ho-hum (frozen crinkle fries). The root beer was delicious, full of vanilla flavor, but unfortunately was not served with free refills. Perhaps we didn't try the right foods on the menu, but if we go back it wouldn't be for anything we ate today, except the onion rings :) read more

Tried the tenderloin and Root Beer...I was completely underwhelmed, and the root beer was actually bad. The tenderloin wasn't good at all. Onion rings weren't bad. Don't get me wrong; this place was friendly and served up great, homemade root beer and fried goodies. I took the out-of-towners, and we had a gut bomb of a "state fair" kind of meal. BUT, it's just deep-fried, fat kid food. The tenderloin was solid, but you can get suuuuuch better ones in town (and I've just lived here a month!). Maybe I am just jaded from having frequented many similar such (i.e,. drive-in) places elsewhere in the (mostly Southern) US. This is a fun, family friendly drive-in, and I thoroughly recommend it, don't get me wrong. However, if you only have 2-3 meals to eat in Indy on a road trip, I can highly recommend other places instead! Go if you're a local and have never been or if you are in a hurry and really hungry. Their homemade root beer is amazing! Love the layout in that it truly is a drive in restaurant with the waitresses coming out to your car window. The food is also pretty tasty, especially the kids meal with chicken pretzels. The best deal on the delicious root beer is the yellow cup. It provides a great cup for root beer and a great take home cup to reuse over and over again to remind you of their tasty root beer. read more

It's an Indianapolis institution- the food has not changed in decades. About the only thing that has changed is they now have a sit down dining room if you are not into spilling chili dog sauce on yourself while you sit in your car. The waitresses are charming, the food is always great, and the root beer is out-of-this-world delicious. An order of fries is plenty for two people so just order one if you are with a friend. Not as good as I remember as a kid. The fried cauliflower was pretty tasty, but the root beer the last 2 visits tasted suspiciously diet flavored even after asking for an exchange. Also I was charged twice for my order and had to dispute the charges with my bank. Mug N Bun has gone downhill. Ate in the Dine-In house tonight. Got our drinks and food quickly, but we were missing pickles and tartar sauce, and the hot dogs were room temperature. We asked the server for them. After waiting 15 minutes for server to bring the condiments, I went up to the main building. I asked a server there to get me the condiments. She asked who was my server, and I pointed him out since he just got around to our request. His face turned red, and he promptly turned around and left. No condiments. The other server asked the kitchen staff for them. After 5 more minutes of waiting I asked to talk to the manager. He apologized, but then he just stood there staring at me. Still no pickles or tartar sauce. I had to ask him if he was going to give them to me, and then he finally reached around the counter and gave them to me. Our original server never spoke to us again. It is clear the owners no longer manage the place. There were no experienced staff as far as I could tell. A bunch of teenagers and college students running the place. Save your money- not the same place I knew growing up. Too bad - this was our summer go-to place. read more

I took about 5 bites and couldn't eat any more of it. It's disappointing that so many people say great things about it when you can easily drive to a dozen or more places in the Indy area that take the time to make a proper tenderloin in-house.
