The first time we went, they gave us the food and, while we were in the middle of eating, demanded we pay for the food already. The second time we came, the waitress scoffed at what we ordered. Just revisited my childhood restaurant. Used to live very close to this location and often visited this restaurant when I was young. The curry beef brisket is still fantastic at this place and the pan fried beans. However, the hainanese chicken here has fallen behind. It's not as flavourful as many restaurants out there. This restaurant atmosphere makes me feel like I have just been to Asia. It's not nicely decorated but the food still taste good. I would still come back for the curry beef brisket alone. Overall I would put the food as a 4 and interior/service as a 2. I was rushed to pay the bill and there wasn't really any customer service. It was mostly the servers just chatting with one another. I was so sad when their Main St. location closed down a couple years ago since I frequented the place for their incomparable Beef Brisket Curry. Now I have to make a bit of a trip to Victoria Dr. location but it's worth it and then some for the same dish. Whenever I order the beef brisket curry from any other restaurants in all parts of the world, the standards that I compare them to is the O.G.(at least for me) from Mui Garden. We all have those lesser known eateries that have a special place in our hearts and we almost depend on them at times to satiate some specific cravings. And when we inevitably lose them it almost feels like we lost a part of our own routine. So for that almost very personal reasons, I have to give this restaurant the perfect score. This has honestly been one of the hardest reviews I've ever written. First of all, my family has been coming here/ordering take out for years. We usually order the usual: Hainanese Chicken (They Ofer both half and whole chicken), Curry Beef, Chicken Oil Rice, and sometimes even some vegetable side dishes (Chinese spinach, etc). All of the dishes are amazing and you can tell that they really do use free range chicken as it always tastes extremely juicy. The curry beef is amazing as well with the beef literally melting in your mouth and the curry smooth and savoury. However, for the past couple times ordering take out now, the customer service really leaves a lot to desire. There is one particular waitress (short hair, raspy voice) is really condescending and makes fun of the way I order to the other waitresses in front of me as if i don't understand Cantonese (I often communicate in Mandarin so that's why she probably thinks I don't understand). Every encounter I have with her leaves me feeling belittled and embarrassed. The other waitresses are fine, although as stated in other reviews, they can be quite occupied at times. While I thoroughly enjoy the food and the consistency in quality over the years, the way I've been repeatedly treated by the staff will definitively play a role in me coming by less now. I'm not sure why this spot gets mediocre reviews because I love this place for some Hainan Chicken and Rice, Brisket Curry, Satay, Noodles etc. I also love Hong Kong Milk Tea and Lemon Tea so this place hits the spot when I stop by. The decor is dated but that's what makes it a hole in the wall good spot. There's also a room in the back of the restaurant for larger groups over 4 people. Yes I sure am a fan of Mui Garden! But even so, they do good with some dishes and not so good with others. Let me tell you all about it. And in particular, some of my favourite things to order. Malay Bread with curry dipping sauce: I usually get this to satisfy my curry cravings. But really, the malay bread goes so well with the curry its hard not to steer away. The malay bread has a pancake shape and the curry sauce is just the curry itself. If you go for lunch, they have a tea time special in which you can get 2 pieces of malay bread with any one drink for $6 something. Great to share this appy. Hard to find on the menu sometimes but order it anyway! Speaking of drinks... Hong Kong Style Lemon Tea (Cold version): If you are going to order a drink, get this asian ice tea! It comes in a tall glass with some type of sugar or honey at the bottom, strong tea with ice, and slices of lemon placed at the top near the rim. What you do is, take your straw and drink spoon, and push the lemons to the bottom of the cup, where you proceed to stab the juices out of the lemon. Fun and tasty! Hainan Chicken: Mui Garden is pretty well known for their Hainan chicken. I've been to various places in Vancouver for Hainan chicken, but Mui Garden hits the spot just fine. It's not amazing but it's pretty darn good! I usually get the Hainan chicken leg with rice combo (on the second page). It comes with a healthy chinese soup and bowl of hainan rice, and the hainan chicken with roasted peanuts and ginger onion oil/chili vinegar dipping sauce. What to expect: The chicken comes out cold, and looks like plain boiled chicken, but it has a nice delicate flavor and goes well with the sauces and the rice and soup. Be aware that the meat of the chicken is also very thin on the bones because it is a free range chicken. Also the rice is cooked with the broth and juices of the actual chicken. Chicken Curry... This I am not to sure of. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Mui Garden Curry. But thats what I love. The curry. You must be wondering what I mean. I recently had the Chicken Curry (non-fried chicken version) and all I enjoyed was the curry and the potatoes in the curry. The chicken itself was definitely not as fresh as the hainan chicken... SO if you get this, try some of the other curries but steer well away from the regular chicken curry. Next time I will try the beef curry and will let you know what I think... Anyway, enjoy! Let's be real here... The place is not glamorously decorated, and the staffs are not young, sleek and pretty waitresses you come to see at the Keg or Earl's, but i assure you the food here are great! My favourites are the Hainan chicken and curry fish. They are the best. The chicken are nice and juicy and goes well with the sauces that come with it. Don't forget the salt and oil rice! We've been fans of this chain of restaurants for a loooooong time. When I was a kid, my Mom used to make curry out of leftover lamb and gravy and added generic curry powder. Let's just say that curry wasn't one of her speciality dishes and curry night at our house was one both me and my sister dreaded. I usually order take out here, but this time it was a sit down meal with the family. It's a safe play if you are going to order anything curry here. They are usually spot on with their delectable curry sauce on lamb. Their satay skewer sticks are good too as long as you order the beef or lamb. There are pineapple, cucumber slices and peanut sauce as a side dish for their skewers. Though, I was a little unimpressed with their cooked long bean vegetables. I've decided to go to this Mui Garden on a busy Saturday afternoon lunch hour to get one of their famous free ranged chicken. As the waitress picked the seats for 3, I sat and noticed a awful smell (I was hungry so my smelling sense was grown.) It smelled like the Mens Washroom, urine and all, I've wasn't even close to the washrooms. I've asked to move elsewhere and told them why exactly and they moved me like normal to a window seat. I've ordered the chicken as planned for 9.00 and when I've received the chicken, it was a really small portion, like tweety bird small. I've told them this and they happily replaced it with some reasoning, it was still small and then I've gave up asking. The rice that came with it was regular and kinda dry. I've had to eat all of it ask I've already ordered it. While almost finishing eating it, two guys came in near my table and started playing their racing games on their Iphones with their speaker blasted on full volume. I said that was it, so I've paid, left little tip about the service, and felt dissatisfied. This restaurant has been a fixture in East Van for many years, yet I tried it for the first time only recently. The restaurant was full for lunch, but the servers kept us pleasantly updated with the status of a free table for us, and we didn't have to wait too long. We were led to a hidden back room where three additional, larger tables were set up. I ordered sliced beef with scrambled egg on rice, which was decent enough but nothing too special. It may have even been a little bland, but I was hungry so it didn't bother me : P My family ordered salted egg congee, wonton and rice noodles in soup, and beef brisket and rice noodles in soup, which all got satisfactory reviews. Our server made certain to inform us that the wonton would be different from traditonal wonton, but I forgot to ask the verdict on these non-traditional wonton. We asked for chili sauce, which was brought to us in a soup spoon. Maybe they ran out of clean sauce dishes? All in all, if you're looking for a fast, cheap lunch, Mui Garden is a safe bet. There are various lunch specials that come with a drink as well. The service was friendly, but being in the back room may have meant less attentive service than out in the main room. But for old fashioned Cantonese type food that is affordable and you don't have dietary challenges, then you might like this place if not already a regular customer. Iced milk tea was on the watery side but it might have been an off night, (I came at 8:30pm) Baked Portuguese chicken rice came out really fast but was still nice and hot. The sauce is missing something, maybe the coconut milk and there's definitely no spice. They cut the peppers into very large slices which feels lazy to me as its the only thing you can fit on your spoon. The fish on the curry cod rice is pretty bad, the outer layer is rubbery. Neither of these dishes are worth $9 for mini set. Not that filling either. Try their curry beef brisket instead, its not too spicy and is a staple here. This is one of my fav go-to spots for Chinese / HK cafe style comfort food in South Vancouver. Decent prices and a few signature dishes make this place a 3.5/5 for me. People that complain about the lack of decor, friendly waitresses, should obviously look elsewhere. This place is kept in business primarily by neighbourhood regulars. The waitresses aren't rude or anything but you don't come here for the ambience. My fav dishes: - For breakfast I prefer the mushroom + chicken omelette, served with mixed veggies and toast. With a hot drink to boot for under $7. Great way to start the day - Curry beef brisket with rice like most people mentioned. Very rich and creamy, but the brisket is quite fatty and the curry gets very heavy towards the end. This dish needs a complimentary soup! - Baked seafood on rice / Baked spaghetti with meats sauce: my go-to late afternoon meal here. Includes a drink and has plenty of carbs and calories to power a workout. - Hai Nan Chicken on rice. A great signature dish and the oily rice is very very delicious. Comes with a soup too! The hainanese chicken still tasted good, and for $8.50, you can't beat this price in the area. It has a rice, a dish of chicken and soup of the day. It will fill you up, but the portion is less than a couple years ago. They are famous for the free range chicken and that is what brought me in the store for the first time. 3.5/5 The beef curry - the safest bet in the store, as their curries area the most popular dishes inhouse. You can't go wrong on this. The taste was great, and plenty of rice. My quick estimation was there was about two standard sizes bowl on the dish. I used to enjoy the food from this place but after several incidents of blatant racist treatment from the staff we won't be going back! Like we'd call to order take-out and were told they are closed, 45 mins before closing time, only to drive by 30 mins later to see place full of customers. This happened several times. Except for a few differences: - it seems to be much busier - came here about 7PM on a weekday and it was packed to capacity. Whereas the Main St. one was near empty the entire time. - probably related to my 1st point, the service is much slower (tea refills were few) and the waitresses didn't seem to mind loudly yelling/conversing with each other across the dining room which is a bit disruptive (then again, a more 'authentic' Chinese place in this sense) - there seems to be fewer value-oriented combos on the menu - the Main St. one seems to have more meal + drink combos for dinner if I recall correctly. ~$8 got me a meal with a drink at Main St - the same money here for curry beef brisket on rice, but the drink is seperate. However, this may change with the lunch combo offerings. Not the best value or decor (pretty rundown) when compared to HK cafes in Richmond, but good Malay-style coconut milk curry - seems like everyone ordered this or their Hainanese chicken rice. This is one of those places that I'll be happy ordering the same thing over and over again. HK style coffee serving up Chinese/Mala food. The place looks a little runned down and with their ripped booth seats and stained dirty carpets. Don't let the look of the restaurant fool you though; the food is actually pretty good What I usually order here is the Fish Curry and Szechuan Green Beans. Deep fried fish with a creamy coconut curry, mmmmmm I love this curry. Unfortunately they use frozen and not fresh fish, but it's still good! The beans are killer! I always try to get them, but it's a pretty large dish and hard for 2 people to order beans and an entree to share. Portion size are pretty good here. Mui Garden is where my entire family goes often, with family friends too of course. It's not a place to bring your date and dazzle him/her with their amazing service and ambiance and whatnot. It's a Malaysian/Chinese food place. The restaurant overall is moderately clean. The prices are pretty good, it's not super expensive. Because we come here often to eat in and do take outs, we know the waitresses pretty well so the service is great. They're very friendly with us and come back often to do refills and such. The orders come promptly and usually end with a free dessert- something along the lines of red bean soup or this sweet potato sort of soup. Food here is absolutely delicious. Before I turned vegetarian, I often ate here and tried some of their items. I am in love with their curry. It's sooo good. With their special rice, which already has a flavouring. The curry sauce itself is really good when it's mixed with plain rice. The beef brisket can be a tad bit fatty sometimes though. There's always potatoes in there as well. But it's really yummy- and no it's not an authentic Indian curry at all, so don't complain about that. The hainanese chicken (it's free range I think) is really great too, with either the usual ginger dip or a semi-spicy dip and roasted peanuts. Their skewers are a must, I think the favourite would probably be the chicken one and not the beef. It comes with cucumbers, pineapples, and this dip (unsure what it is, don't usually use it). The stir fried peas (forgot what it's called) are super yummy but a bit oily. It's a little spicy but it's not soggy with oil, very crunchy. But yeah, I love their food so much.
