Even though they weren't the best ramen I've had in SF, I was actually kind of bummed when I discovered that Fuku Ramen had closed. For one, it's always unfortunate when a solid ramen joint closes, but it also felt like they weren't here for all that long! However, I have to say - all of those feelings of disappointment dissipated pretty quickly when I saw that Mulan Malatang had taken their place! Especially since there are even fewer malatang restaurants around! Stepping inside, Mulan Malatang is quite similar to what Fuku Ramen was like, with its wealth of tables and chill vibes. However, the thing that stood out the most was their selection of offerings. Across their two refrigerated units, they have so much to offer - napa cabbage, yu choy, spinach, daisy crown, tofu, fish balls, fried tofu, egg pudding, king crown mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, lamb, beef, wagyu, mussels, fish filet, shrimp, ramen, egg noodles, vermicelli, quail eggs, and so much more. What's more, the quality of everything looks fantastic and they have four different types of soup broth to choose from with a few different spice levels. -- PORK BONE BROTH (Mild) with Lamb, Wagyu Beef, Fish Balls with Roe, Beef Balls, Yu Choy, Napa Cabbage, Enoki Mushrooms, Shirataki Noodles, and Ramen Noodles Aside from how I wish I had gone with "medium" spicy, this was pretty good! The broth had a nice porky flavor to it, the lamb and wagyu beef were of surprisingly good quality, the veggies were fresh and clean, and the noodles had a nice bite to them. -- PORK BONE BROTH WITH BLACK GARLIC (Medium) with Wagyu Beef, Lamb, Frozen Fish, Quail Eggs, Yu Choy, Crown Daisy, Tofu, King Oyster Mushrooms, Rice Cakes, and Ramen Noodles Not quite as garlicky as I had hoped for, but the amount it had and the additional spice in this helped a lot. I also really liked the frozen fish filets and rice cakes, but absolutely skip the King Oyster Mushrooms, as the stems were insanely tough to bite through. Since I haven't been to many malatang restaurants (yet), I can't say how Mulan Malatang compares across the board. However, from what I've seen, they seem to be one of the better values, as their price feels fair ($16.99/lb) and they're even currently offering a can of Sapporo for just $1 (dine-in only, limit one per customer). Add to that how the quality of most of their offerings seems to be pretty good and they definitely provide a solid bang for your buck. If I did have to come up with a knock on this place, it would be that neither of the broths that I've tried so far have been as interesting or dynamic as the one I had at YGF Malatang at Serramonte. Combine that broth with everything else that Mulan Malatang has to offer and this would easily be a five star review! Not that FOUR AND A HALF STARS rounded up is anything to scoff at. read more

Water & hot tea are self-serve. They don't have a huge selection of ingredients but the essentials were there. Clean, fresh and nice broth choice in the Richmond district. Nice waitress but I always leave a cash tip on the table if they deserve it. I was mildly offended when the charge card machine "suggest" a tip. I retrieved my own water, food and tray. I thought to myself I have to pick my food, bring it to them to cook it. What did they do to deserve a tip? I put "no tip." After the nice lady kindly delivered our bowls with a welcoming smile, and also was attentive and bid us farewell, I tipped cash on the table. We are no longer in Covid protocols and businesses are no longer risking as much contaminant exposure. My procedure going forward will be to see what service I receive prior to tipping. read more

The service is fantastic with a beyond kind person asking and helping if this is your first time. The price is reasonable for SF. The area is big for seating so you can come alone or with a group. Brought my boyfriend to try Malatang for the first time and he enjoyed it! We both got the pork bone broth with black garlic but he chose medium spicy and I chose mild spice. As someone with a relatively low spice tolerance, I felt like I could have gone for at least the medium spice. Both the mild and medium broths felt very mild. I wish they also had more sauce options (like ponzu and chili oil) as well as maybe a beef bone broth option. They had a nice selection of meats, veggies, tofu and seafood balls so I didn't feel like my bowl missed much. Got a mild spicy tomato pork bone broth with 1.47lbs of food, white rice on the side, with beer and I was stuffed by the end of it. Employee was extremely nice and helpful and the place was nice and clean with plenty of seating on a Friday evening. To maximize value, at least for me, I would just aim for 1lb where it's 3/4 veggies 1/4 protein with rice on the side, maybe with 2 tofu skins. If I desire a fish cake just get one with roe. No quail eggs cause I like them cooked completely but they were soft boiled for sure. read more

Dropped in for lunch after seeing the fresh ingredients on display and it did not disappoint. Service was quick and there are a some sauces on the counter that you can self-serve to level up your bowl after it comes out. If you're vegetarian, there seem to be plenty of options available (I'm not vegetarian but I still enjoyed loading up on the wide variety of veggies and tofu for a great light lunch). My only complaint was that they use plastic cutlery and bowls - and because the food is coming out piping hot, my anxiety kicked in and I immediately started thinking about microplastics and chemicals leaching into the food. Tang Bar inside of Stonestown is one of my favorite places to eat at! Finding out about a new place that styles itself just like Tang Bar had me curious as to how similar and different it would be. We went in on a Thursday night around 6pm to see a mostly empty restaurant. I realize Mulan used to be a ramen shop (which I unfortunately did not get a chance to try before it closed down). The selection bar isn't as extensive as Tang Bar but there are still quite a few options! The process itself is similar and everything looked fresh! I got the Pork Bone Broth with Black Garlic and it was really good, flavorful, and tasted healthy! My husband liked my broth more than his which was just the Pork Bone Broth. The person working the checkout counter was so friendly and patient and gave advice on what broth and spice level to choose. We sat down and our food came out in ~5-10 minutes. Mulan Malatang is one of the few options in SF for malatang, and it's pretty solid. The selection of ingredients was being replenished frequently and you have all your standard fare accounted for (mushrooms, proteins like fish cakes and beef/lamb, veggies, noodles). I loved the broth, which had a really great depth of flavor and was not too spicy at the medium spice level. Please add more options for sauces! I would almost bring my own sesame sauce if that is allowed. What they lack in sauce, they make up for in an endless tap of great teas and friendly service. There is plenty of seating, so we ended up staying for a long time to catch up over very comforting bowls of soup. I would definitely come again in the future! read more

After looking forward to malatang all week, I was excited to try this place, much to my disappointment. As a malatang connoisseur, I should've known to not eat here when I was the only customer. There was a small selection of food to choose from to make your malatang and after making it, it took about 10 mins to get my food. No sauce bar to compliment my soup, just soy sauce and vinegar. No malatang flavor in the broth even though I got the spiciest option. You're better off getting ramen. read more
