We have been trying different Chinese restaurants out of curiosity. But tonight we were tired and wanted to go close to home and we haven't been here in a while. I did not know it was under new management, which is irrelevant. Our Gai pan lo mein, came without lo me in. I think the waitress just took it off the buffet, because it was cold and tasteless. which was quite irritating. Other than that the veggies & meat were very delicious , as well as the scorpion bowl. I was shocked to see that Nan King was only given 3 stars. We have been going there for 20 or more years and the food has always been fantastic. We moved to the lakes region and would make it point to come back to enjoy the food. Now we are in Derry and we get there as often as we can. Nobody makes fried rice like they do. Nice rich dark color very tasty. The Egg Foo Yong is like no other. Alway cooked thru not runny in the center perfect. We are planning a small get together for a group of good friends and family. NOTE: I am only able to comment on the restaurant's buffet. I haven't ordered anything off the menu here in years. For about the price of a large value meal at any of the major fast food chains (at lunch time anyway), you've got yourself a fairly decent buffet here. The selection isn't as big as those at places that are just buffets without a menu, but it is definitely larger than that at many full restaurants that also have buffets. The selection is a little bit bland in the sense that a significant majority of the items on the buffet are all things that would be found in the "appetizers" section of the menu. There are only 3-4 of the higher quality entree-section items, and of the ones of these I've tried, they're not that great. The general tso's chicken is decent quality meat but the sauce is just so-so, and not really spicy in the least. While I've cited that this buffet's appetizer majority is a disappointment on one level, it is also where they excel. One or two standout items can really make or break an otherwise so-so buffet, and Nan King has two such items: their pork spare ribs and their dumplings are really superb. Being used to the really thin, really fatty, small piece spare ribs you get at most places, Nan King's really stand out. They are huge pieces that you absolutely need to cut smaller, and they are astonishingly non-fatty as far as that particular dish is concerned. The dumplings are large, flavorful, don't fall apart like most do as soon as you cut into them, and are very well breaded. While most items on the buffet are bland and forgettable, I would come back sometime just for the dumplings. All in all this buffet's a good value with overall so-so food but a few very good items, and so far as I've yet been able to tell, unlike certain just-buffet establishments, it doesn't make you feel ill. read more

My friend was ripped off. I saw her pay the bill and they said they "couldn't remember" her paying cash. Of course none of the cameras were available to look at. Make sure you get a receipt because all of the sudden they don't speak English or remember simple transactions. Buyer beware. Thank you for responding Josh. My favorite Chinese food place. They're open late, and will seat people in the dining area pretty much all night long. Nan King has the BEST crab rangoons I have ever eaten. The buffet is a great deal, but when there is no buffet they have the "Kings Platter" which serves 'two' even tho I could serve a lot more, it comes with tons of food, enough to fill up two people and take home leftovers. Pick up orders are always finished super quickly, usually they tell me it will only take 10 minutes and only one time (new years eve) did I ever have to wait for food, it's always been ready when I arrive. Staff is always very nice and courteous. Like I said, my favorite Chinese food place. However, I REALLLLLLLY wish they would bring back the delivery service. And possibly even the coupons. Always been a "go to" place for over 30 years. Stopped by tonight after a friends wake. Was emotionally drained and simply wanted a drink. Before I could even sit down at the bar with my man, was accosted by the bartender, asking what I wanted to drink. When I told her I didn't know yet, I was asked what I wanted to eat. Hadn't even gotten a drink yet! Ordered a scorpion bowl for 2 which was Great and served with enthusiasm. When we ordered our pu pu platter for two was informed that it might take about 10 minutes and we were fine with that. The pu pu platter arrived and it looked delicious so we dived in. Crab rangoons were to die for and I ate a chicken finger. Grabbed a chic wing and found a very long blonde hair attached to it. My man told me to be discreet about it so I grabbed the hair and went around the corner to approach the bartender privately so the other patrons would not hear. (I'm in the restaurant business so I know stuff happens) she took the hair and held it up to my head and said "this looks like your hair, there's nobody here that has that hair color" To say that I was insulted would be an understatement. I have always been straightforward and honest and I would NEVER try to pull a fast one to get a free meal. I was humiliated and degraded and went back to my seat. I told my man, we have to leave. The manager came over and was very nice and asked if I wanted a new pu pu platter but my appetite was gone and I declined. I had to wait 10 more minutes for my check (which was only for the drink) and I paid it, leaving a minimal tip because I simply could not walk away and leave nothing even though that person deserved less than nothing. I have NEVER been so degraded and humiliated by another human being as badly as I was degraded and humiliated by that bartender. Buffet is usually empty, mentioned to them about my problem that told me to tell the waitress the buffet needs food, since when is it the customers responsibility to tell them the food is empty. As you might have heard there's new owners and Nan King has gone from ok at times to mall quality and a wait to even get it! I called in a simple order on 10/20 Sat., a beef fried rice and an order of lobster sauce, simple enough right. Took me about 10 mins. to get there and I had to wait another 20 mins. to get my food and nobody was there, the bar was empty too, only one other person came in for take out and he was still waiting after I left while the kid behind the register went back to staring into his phone! Once I got home and opened the food it sucked! Let me explain, I always order beef fried rice because they make big batches of pork and beef is made fresh, the beef was low quality like injected with water, soft and gross , not real beef, the lobster sauce was watery and a very light brown and unflavorable, yuk! In a word "Pathetic" We went with a large group last Sat night got there around 7pm for the buffet. Most of the buffet trays where empty and the ones with food in them were almost empty. The food I had tasted ok. When i went back for another plate I found they didnt refill the food trays, so took some chicken wings (big mistake) which wernt even cooked all the way. I'm writing this review from the parking lot... after what was a very sour experience. I and twelve friends came here tonight after a funeral. We all got the buffet option for supper; five of us ordered bar drinks. So here's why my experience tonight was so wretched: Service was slow, disdainful, and sloppy. My drink (a mai-tai) came to me already separating, and eventually curdled. For the first time in my drinking years, I sent a drink back to the bar. When the grumpy waitress asked why I was sending it back, I told her it tasted disgusting and was actually curdled (how?!). When she asked if I wanted another and I told her no (and that I didn't want any other drink either), she acted disgusted with me and insulted. The buffet choices were very limited. The labels over the food were almost invariably incorrect ("egg rolls" do not look like chicken wings), and once I got my small selection of food back to the table, the only thing edible was the white rice. I had to excuse myself to the ladies room to spit up the food. On top of the atrocious service and yucky food, our bill had an EIGHTEEN PERCENT gratuity tacked on. I understand this practice is defacto when a large party comes in, but that's an obscene tip for a very bad experience, at a buffet, of all places. So... I wish I could give this place Zero stars, but I will settle for one. read more

Very disappointing. Went there on Saturday night for dinner. Everything on the buffet was cold - even the soup. It tasted okay but definitely not worth it. The tea was also cold. Their food used to be pretty good with a good variety on the buffet. Last time we went there, about 6 weeks ago, it wasn't that great but everyone can have an "off" night. The con's: A meagre selection of buffet entries poorly attended by an inattentive staff. Even with an excess of msg, most entries were less than tasty. My mom and I used to frequent this place. We really enjoyed the lo mien and dumplings. Then one day, during the buffet, we grabbed lo mien and guess what was in with our tasty noodles! roaches. Stir fried right in to it. Not only did our appetite disappear, we were still forced to pay for our "meal". I haven't been back since. Not only was that disgusting. But it was rude. We had not been there in several months, so we tried it today. The wait staff told us it had come under new ownership in recent months, and that it was better now. OMG! It was NOT! The table was sticky and needed a good cleaning. The tea had to be sent back three times because it was cold, the buffet was not set-up until almost noon (they open at 11:30), and when we finally chose our buffet selections and sat down to eat, everything was cold, not even warm. Food was bland and didn't taste very fresh. The desert bar was hilarious, just a few plates with a very tiny sliver of strawberry-rhubarb pie on each plate, and a few plates with a store-bought mini cupcake on each. Holy crap! This was my worst food experience EVER in a restaurant. The appetizer, beef teryaki, was fatty and dripping oil. It was possibly the cheapest cut of flank steak that has ever existed. The entree that I chose was called Tangerine Crispy Beef. The beef had the consistency of jerky with an unidentifiable coating. There was virtually no flavor other than from the three hot red peppers added to the top of the pile. This concoction was nearly too tough to chew. My son chose a combination plate that included chicken fingers. The chicken fingers were apparently whatever frozen container Sysco shipped them in and quickly passed near a too cool fry-o-lator. They were, like the teryaki, greasy and none too appetizing. I would have had a beter experience and saved a lot of money by going over to the Hudson Speedway and dining there. read more

Nan King has definitely gone down hill in the years since I started going there with my family. The service is HORRIBLE if you have a Chinese server- they barely speak let alone understand any English and their so ignorant they don't care, or try to make your dining experience a good one to say the least. If you have an American server I will guarantee they will try to make you feel at home, but they can only do so much without getting in trouble by their Chinese superiors that run the place. We always get stuck with a server named Theresa who by all means is the worst server by far there. She's too busy in the kitchen to even remember that she has a party waiting in the dining room and the fat man Albert that works the front counter does not care if you complain about your dining experience. Theresa always adds gratuity when we have a big party to ensure that we tip her, which in my opinion the woman doesn't deserve a nickel. She is by far the one worst server in the place along with her husband who runs the bar on the weekends. Its pretty bad when you have to go find the bartender who's usually in the kitchen as well. It also is a very dirty restaurant- they should stop being cheap and hire a cleaning company to scrub the place down before the board of health shuts them down. I have gone there once in the passed year and after our last experience with Theresa we decided to start going to Soho instead. Basically, Nan King needs to start form scratch, hire new people that can speak English, clean the place. We spend far too much money to be treated with such disrespect. Since new management has taken over, the food quality and taste has improved 100 folds. The bar area was redone , 1 bar tender in particular ( Mike) is probably there best, he knows his drinks, very observant to your drinks(refills) your not waiting . Not to mention he continues to go and check on your food orders that have been made. If this guy worked more days I would probably be there more often . The food again is so much improved that I even have given out several gift certificates to friends and relatives and not one complaint on the quality. Okay so not so much lately but in years past I've been known as a chinese food junky. I have probably tried every single chinese restaurant in southern New Hampshire and many more around the country. I would rank the quality of service and the quality of the food at the Nan King on the top of my list of favorite chinese restaurants. They truly have a menu suited for every type of chinese food fan, from young to old. This is a family friendly and a kid friendly establishment. I walk in the front door and I am instantly greeted by the counter staff. The manager Josh is very friendly and his employees are all very accommodating. If you are a fan of the "bar scene", they have a full bar and karaoke every night with pool tables in the bar area to shoot pool, enjoy a drink and listen to some entertaining local "talent". The dining room offers a full menu and a buffet. The food is rotated frequently, always tasty and something for everyone. A couple of my favorites from Nan King that separates them from the rest would be their Chicken Teriyaki and their Boneless Spareribs... Both are in a league of their own in this area. The decor is very 1970s style, but kept very clean and gives the vibe of the kind of hard work that this family has put into their business for all these years and have sustained friendly family friendly service with quality that is unmatched by others. read more

After living down the street from Nan King for 3 years I finally decided to give it a try the other day. It was rainy, I was tired and many of the other Chinese restaurants were closed, so I decided to ignore all the bad reviews and give it a shot. I wish I hadn't. I'm 37 and have probably eaten at a couple of dozen Chinese restaurants over the years. I can honestly say this was the worst Chinese food I have ever had. The dumplings were burned (black). The ribs were so fatty I had to spit the majority of each bite out. The egg rolls tasted like they had been freezer burned prior to cooking. After sampling most of the stuff I almost went back to ask for my money back, but didn't because I doubt they would have given me a refund - and as previously stated it was rainy and I was tired. Ultimately I ended up throwing a lot of the food away as it was virtually inedible. I will never eat here again, even though I could walk to it from my house. Oh - also while I was paying it looked like there was a giant bowl of meat soaking in a red sauce. The bowl was sitting on the floor near the doorway to the kitchen, which didn't strike me as the most sanitary place to marinate the food. read more

We tried out Nan King this weekend after living in the area for over a year, and I wish we would have ordered sooner! Chinese restaurants in this area have gone way downhill in recent years and we have been hard pressed to find one that didn't suck. My only two complaints were the pork ribs were a little fatty for our liking, and there aren't any options for entree chicken in the combo plates (general tsao's chicken, sweet & sour chicken, etc). But we both got the "Whatever You Like" combo plates, which comes with fried rice and your choice of 3 appetizers, and we were definitely impressed! We will be back. read more
