The kids spaghetti consists of overcooked angel hair and two frozen meatballs with sauce on top. The bowl of gumbo was bland. The onion rings were so good! And the chicken tenders were decent... You can't really mess that up right? Overall, we won't come back. I was pretty disappointed with the service and the quality of the food. I asked three times for extra napkins. This is the best food option past the seawall! The service here was outstanding. There was a bit of a wait, but the staff was friendly, helpful, and spot on with their wait time estimate. They were super helpful in the selection and took really good care of us. Food was good. I had the Flounder. It was cooked well and seasoned nicely. Got to spend the extra money and get it stuffed with crab that was the best part. In hindsight wish I had just gone with crab cause I wanted more of that. The portion size of this thing was ridiculous so be sure to only go after it if you are hungry. Only bummer was the waiting are was either the bar which was limited a bit on space or the tiki porch area. The porch area has a lot of potential but was a bit dirty and hot. The fried shrimp were great, seafood sampler, Onion rings, popcorn shrimp were all ok. It served as needed to fill us up but for the price we really expected super fresh interesting food. The shrimp kisses were likely under cooked and the bacon was soggy, leaving something to desire and the jalapeño item in the sampler was out as was the coleslaw at 1pm on a Sunday. We went to Nate's for the first time about two months ago (I'm slow to write reviews). The wait wasn't too bad and the service was great (Amanda). My wife and I ordered fried shrimp and we're glad we did. It was delicious! The prices are moderate considering its location to the beach. Check it out. The fried shrimp looked delicious but had absolutely NO flavor, and I mean NO flavor at all. The shrimp had no taste, the breading was crunchy and golden but that had no flavor either! I thought it was just me at first, like, oh my gosh maybe I'm coming down with Covid!? but 2 other people in our party ordered the fried shrimp- it was the shrimp. It was weird, I've never had shrimp that didn't have some kind of flavor, good or bad. We eat at Nate's every so often, but this visit was very disappointing. read more

We arrived in Galveston late in the day on Thursday because of heavy traffic in Houston. We ended up at Nate's because it was open until 9, and it was 8:30 when we left our AirB&B. When we arrived, the OPEN sign was on. As soon as we walked in at 8:45pm, I could tell that they were already cleaning the restaurant to close. There were employees sweeping, and employees sitting at the tables folding napkins , and sorting silverware and other closing duties. There were several tables with customers who were still eating. We asked if we could order and were told, "I'll have to see if the kitchen is still open". A very unpleasant woman (whom I assumed was a manager, because she barked at people the whole time we were there), who was sitting at a table right near the hostess stand said out loud, "they come in at 8:45 and want to order food?" We were allowed only to order to go. I wanted to leave, but nothing else was open. We got a burger and fries and cheese sticks. The fries and cheese sticks were soggy as if they had been sitting. The burger was pretty good. Overall I would say that restaurants should serve food until their posted closing time. Being rude to customers is a very good way to go out of business. The owner of this restaurant probably doesn't care much about money, if he is okay with a manager berating customers for wanting to order food during business hours. I will not be back, and I recommend that you keep driving. There are probably other restaurants in the Jamaica Beach area that would be happy to serve people until their actual closing time. read more

Happily impressed with Nates. The service was great, we had no wait and the food was delicious. I had the gumbo and I give that about 3.5 stars, it was tasty, but not the best. Nate's is a busy popular spot on any given night. We have eaten here before with big groups and this time just the two of us. Amanda was our server and gave us great service. We only waited 10 minutes for a table. (That's luck of the draw - several parties from 4 to 25 came in after us!) You wait outside on the patio or on the lawn in Adirondack chairs. It's a little warm, but thankfully there was a breeze. The Turkey burger and steak fries were very good. The catfish Po' Boy was very tasty, and the fried okra was good. You had to "dress" it yourself but tartar sauce and cocktail sauce came with it. The catfish was fried perfectly and came straight out of the pan - nice and hot, crispy! Just the way I like it! The sweet tea was super sweet! I'd suggest half unsweetened! It's noisy and people are there with family and friends - very casual. It's always busy so don't be in a rush! I'm giving one star because I have to and the only thing out of $110 of food that was ordered all that was decent were the potatoes and the corn, but how hard is it to mess those up really? Oh and the ranch wasn't bad... This restaurant gave me SEVERE food poisoning. I missed out on the beach and other activities with my family because I was puking all day. We went here on a Saturday night around 7:30pm with no reservation but we were able to sit by the bar. The bartender was also our waiter and was not very friendly nor very attentive, never asked if we wanted any refills and rarely smiled. Great place for burgers. Fried seafood is somewhat overcooked on the occasions we've tried it, so we stick to burgers. Calling and ordering pickup is easy and the order is always correct. Small dining room, small outside dining, small bar. Service can be hit or miss depending on the server. Overall, great island staple. read more

We called in our simple orders of 3 burgers and a poboy and were told it would be ready in 25 minutes. Arrived in 25 minutes to a semi-full dining room and we were told it would be 10 more minutes. Dirty tables, empty tables, a line out the door and down the steps, people not being able to check out, the phone ringing nonstop, and the wait staff argued and bickered with each other the whole time. Are they understaffed? I'm not sure because there were 4 wait staff and only 8 tables currently had customers. So after waiting for almost an hour, we were hopeful that the food would be great. Not impressed. Was a great place years ago. New menu & staff. So disappointed. Ordered shrimp kisses. Good shrimp & bacon, but supposed to be stuffed with cream cheese & jalapeño. No cream cheese & a minuscule bit of jalapeño. Friends had wedge salads; one with bad crab meat & the other had a great tuna steak. Biggest problem was the bill, when I checked it, there was a charge for using a credit card. I wasn't paying with a credit card. Nice, new waitress said I was the first person to question it. When manager was asked about it, she said they would take it off when I paid. If I hadn't said anything, we would have been charged an extra $4.80. The wife and I visited this location on our vacation. Waited close to an hour to get a table for four and receive our food after being told that there were only two people waiting ahead of us. Once the food finally did arrive, it was average, if that. The side salad consisted of some lettuce with one baby carrot, one cherry tomato, and one cucumber slice. Blackened catfish was ok but nothing to get excited about. The green beans were overcooked and soggy. The time it took to get a table, place our order, receive our food, and get the check was much too long. Unfortunately we will not be returning. I put in a to-go order at the bar for 2 fish baskets on a Friday at 7:45 and waited for a full hour as the restaurant cleared out before I got my food. I had glass of wine while waiting but after that was gone I was never offered water or anything else. When I got home 5 minutes later I had barely warm, overcooked and under-seasoned fries and fish filets, both of which I believe were frozen Sysco products. Needless to say I was very disappointed in this $50 mediocre meal and don't plan to return. read more

Eventually we settled on the closest half-decent place, which happened to be Nate's. And the verdict? Yep: half-decent. The food was about what you'd expect at the Chili's/Applebee's of the world. Our server was curiously slow. There was a wait, probably due to the lack of other options nearby. So bottom line: if I were out this way again, I'd probably drive a bit further for better. Nates originally was located on Seawall Blvd -- where they were known for their Chicken Fried Steak -- but a few years ago Nate sold the restaurant to get into the Real Estate business. Alas, cooking is in his blood, as he reopened his restaurant, "Nate's West End", about 18 miles west of the old location, this time between the resort communities of Jamaica Beach and Sea Isle. The new restaurant has a separate bar area and a some-what obstructed view of the Gulf of Mexico. Because its located within the city of Galveston, it is a non-smoking establishment (by city ord. effective Jan 1, 2010) During my recent trip, my dining partner and myself both opted for the daily special, which on Wednesdays is Chicken Parmigiana served on a bed of angel hair pasta and with a side of cole slaw or pinto beans. For about $6, it wasn't too bad of a deal. The tomato sauce & topping wasn't anything to write home about -- it reminded me of canned stewed tomatoes topped with shredded Mozzarella cheese. The chicken breast was nice and tender, and the breading was really crisp and flavorful. The pinto beans were probably my favorite though -- slow cooked with bacon and salt pork... MMMMMMMMmmm Dinner entrees (aside from burgers) seem to run between $13-$20 dollars, so I'll have to come back some evening and see if its worth the price....but as for lunch, it was a fair meal at a fair price. read more

Nate's is a dive. We stopped in for lunch while spending the week at Pointe West Beach Club. The service is fast and friendly. I ordered the burger and found it to be fresh, cooked to order, and down right good. My only complaint was the bun got a little soggy by the time it made it to the table. They offered thick cut steak fries to go with it too. They have a good kids menu as well. Just remember this isn't a tourist trap, but a local dive and you should have a good time. read more
