VERY DISAPPOINTING to be told I cannot rent a car with a debit card unless I had a flight booked. No one told me that on the phone when they said they take debit cards. So I wasted a lot of money on two Lyft rides (with tips) there and back. It messed up my plans to drive to Arizona to get my own car. I just moved to Bakersfield and already I want to leave this place. It was a lot of stress and hardship and I still don't want a credit card in my life. I'd take a Lyft all the way to Arizona if I could, but I think now I will fly there. I don't want to deal with any more car rental companies. They just don't care that we are real people. I am so disappointed with this location. I left something in the trunk of my rental and I called the next day to get it back and they said that they already rented the vehicle out. I know for a fact that it was in there. They said they cleaned the vehicle but they absolutely didn't. Every time I rent a vehicle from them there is trash/drinks under the seat. They need better management at this location that doesn't yell at the customers and actually tries to help them. I won't be renting from them again. :( read more

If you need a rental car in Bakersfield look anywhere else but National in Bakersfield. It's the only National location that has by far the worst customer service and by far the laziest employees you could ever find. The so called Manager of this location (Steve is his name if I remember correctly) is as useless as having a box of rocks. Guy couldn't manage how to pick a phone up let alone actually manage anything. He refuses to check in your car unless you give him exact miles of the vehicle along with a plethora of other information(meaning he wants you to do his job for him) as he sits behind the counter. A second time I showed up on a Sunday at 4pm to pick up a car that was schedule for that time, the lady at Hertz said the employees left that day about two hours prior for the day. Ended up having to rent through Hertz. Third time same thing came in at 4pm for another scheduled pickup and the manager said he wouldn't have a car available until Wednesday as they were all rented. Even though I reserved it almost a month prior he said since I wasn't there to pickup when another customer was there that needed a car as well he gave mine away, even though it was scheduled for a 4pm pickup and I showed up at 3:40pm. Wouldn't never use this place and you shouldn't either or else you will be stranded and without a rental car. read more

One person at the counter for over 10 minutes serving both enterprise and national. I was the only person standing in the enterprise line but many standing in the national line. No eye contact and overall terrible service to all customers. Avis had two people serving customers. I exited the enterprise line and got a car with Avis instead. If ypu need to rent a car....go to National Car Rental. I'm telling you...Go. Right now. I rent a lot. I have memberships at every car rental. Why? Because I drive a junky car that can't be trusted. And I love getting out of this hot box town and goong places....so needless to say, I rent cars often. I don't know why I did a different search...but this time National Car Rental came up. Honestly, I had never heard of them. Anyway...their rates were half the cost of the others...with my frequent renter discounts. So I admit, I was a little skeptical. But I get there and I get a Jeep Renegade. For 1/2 the price of a compact car at other places... What???? Are you kidding me? Score! And.... the customer service was excellent. Renting and returning was so easy and fast. THIS.... this IS the place to go. And they too have a frequent renter club thing. But even without it, you can't beat the price. Best rental I have had. I would give more than 5 stars if possible. I will definitely rent from National again...after all... I still am stuck with this hooptie car for a bit longer. read more

ANTS!! Rented a Dodge Caravan from National at The Airport and it was infested with ANTS!! Didn't notice until I got home and began loading my luggage into the back. Ants in the back seat, ants in the cargo area, now crawling on my purse...trying to call but I've been transferred to roadside assistance and hung up on. Horrible service. Don't ever rent from here. This vehicle is infested with ants and they aren't even going to do anything about it I'm stuck!! Ridiculous! Horrible service they should be out of business! Got back to National to exchange the vehicle and the employees response was "It is the season for them!" There is never a season for ANTS in your CAR? How does this even happen? I am disgusted with their dirty bug infested rental car and their horrible customer service ! My husband said that's what I get for picking up a rental car in Oildale ! Zero stars is my actual rating but I wanted to leave details so a one is what I had to give. The manager was rude and condescending and kept telling me to continue to drive the vehicle that clearly said return for service. She looked in the computer and stated you only had this a week... wrong we had it a month and drove from Georgia. After a 20 minute wait she tells me they had no cars and if I wanted one to come back tomorrow. There were clearly 20 plus cars outside. She had me get the mileage and gas and made me wait again, as executive elite 4 years in a row and a long term lease renting all year round they need to do better. She sends me to get a Hyundai Elantra in exchange for my ford SUV limited? No thanks lady. I will drive this until the engine blows up for no oil as you suggested. This place sucks! read more

Nice car (rented an economy, got a Hyundai Sonata and was very pleased and surprised with how nice of a car it was). Nice price (had online coupon that gave me a free day for a 3 day rental with a Saturday night involved, paid $45 for friday to monday morning). Why 2 stars? Because the lady that checked me in was extremely rude with zero customer service (at least good customer service) skills. had an online reservation for 8:30, showed up at 8:00. didnt think it would be a problem. got to the counter and that is when I experienced "Her"... Gave her my name, she said my reservation wasn't until 8:30. looked around and noticed nobody there. Jokingly I said ok, I will just step away and wait till 8:30 seeing she was so busy. I pretended to make a phone call and then told her that I thought this was silly to make me wait until 8:30 when nobody was there waiting. She radioed someone and the guy said he was done washing all of the cars, so she agreed to check me in. She was a real piece of work. Check in was seemless and the guy was very nice. Would I rent from them again? yes, only because Im cheap and maybe this lady will have been fired by the next time I need to rent a car. read more

The car rental process for me always goes well here, the only issue for me is that pretty much any National I go too in the country I am able to pick my car. I really do not like the fact that I am "assigned" a vehicle. As an "Executive level" I'd like to get the vehicle that may work best for me. Some cars smell of smoke and it is too much of a hassle to go back in and start the process over again. I have not encountered any issues with the staff at this location. read more

I made the reservation through priceline. I also needed a GPS. The lady at the counter was very pleasant and made sure the GPS was fully connected and working before she handed it to me. I had a full size car - clean and nice. The entire process did not take more than 10 mins. She also asked me if I needed any maps/ directions/ recommendations for anything. I am a very honest yelper so here it is- I had an excellent deal for national from Hot wire plus I've had wonderful service from the staff before (a balding man and a young girl). Then on the VERY LAST (will never again) visit to national this hag of a woman who claims she is the manager for x number of years left me with the worse taste in my mouth. My credit card that i never use, had been replaced unexpectedly by the card company because of the stupid target breach. so when I went to pick up my rental I handed her my card and it didn't work. I called my card company and they said they had sent my new one to my po box which is in Bakersfield because that's where I work and play. Well my physical address is in lamont and this is where the hag came out. She would not let me use my bank card because I wasn't a resident of Bakersfield. I told her that my billing address was in town but she had zero interest in helping me. I've used my bank card before there I just know it. But I left and will never return to national. I've rented cars since I was able to do so and, regardless of the rental company, I've never been compelled to write a review...until now. Most companies tend to be similar in what they offer and how they treat you--you can be on the receiving end of mediocre or poor customer service from any one of the companies. That was my experience...until I flew in late from Houston, arriving into Bakersfield a few minutes before midnight. National should have been closed, as it was scheduled to close at 11:00 pm. When I arrived at the baggage claim/car rental area of the airport, I was stunned to see John standing at his post at National waiting specifically for me. He'd been monitoring my flight and stayed an hour past closing time to ensure I had transportation. John's commitment to serving National's--his--customers even at his own expense and inconvenience is what now, in my view, sets National apart from any other car rental company. read more

My company uses National and I've never had a problem so I decided to use them for personal use. I called them directly and made a reservation for the following day. I was very pleased that she checked to see what would work best for me in regards to discounts and applied them. I had to keep the car and extra day and didn't have any problems. The car itself was very clean with all the bells and whistles and at a very reasonable cost. I will definitely use them again. The only problem is that there is only one person and there were 3 customers waiting to either pick up or drop off a car so there was a little wait time but perfectly understandable since she was alone. read more

However, it seems they've recently downgraded their car classes - what used to be called an Economy is now Compact, etc. - but prices went up. We had a blowout on the 5 and had to change cars at Bakersfield. The desk manager, Regina, made sure that this was a very unpleasant experience. She was unhelpful, inflexible, and obstructive. Made 4 calls to rent a car with National at the BFL airport. 1st call was told the airport was closed and while they were checking they hung up on me. 2nd call was told the airport was open and the first person I spoke to "obviously didn't know what they were doing". While driving to pickup my car I notice in my email confirm, the 2nd operator booked the wrong day. 3rd call to modify the reservation and was told the airport was now closed but I should go and try. Got to the desk and guess what it was closed and yet they booked my reservation. 4th call to review options, a 4th different caller confirmed yes they were closed but she would call. I held for 20mins while I saw the desk phone ring, only to hear yep, they are closed. I cancelled my reservation and rented from Avis at a better rate. ( they were open as well as Hertz). I'm an emerald club member and travel 2-3 times per month and will be very hesitant for me or my staff to use National due to their incompetence. read more
