Before I was exposed to all of the fancy burgers that big cities had to offer, my favorite burger in the world was a Nation's Burger at their South SF, El Cerrito or Berkeley locations. I loved the big chunks of onions and the chili cheese fries. As a normally healthy-eating Asian, it blew my mind to have such an overindulgent meal. And I think Nation's introduced to me the beauty of the banana cream pie, which even to this day is one of my top five favorite desserts. Fast forward to the present, after feeling a bit jaded from all of the $20 kobe/truffle/brioche/whatever trendy new ingredient burgers out there. I was visiting my parents in the 'burbs when we found out through that there's a Nation's close to them in Fremont. We sped over there in the rain to see if it was as good as we remembered. The verdict? It's still amazing. The restaurant itself isn't much to look at - a weird barn-type structure set way back in a shopping plaza, so it's hard to see from the street. Once inside, it was much smaller and more cramped than the other locations I'd been to, but the menu looked the same, and that's all I cared about. I shared a bacon cheeseburger, chili cheese fries and a slice of banana cream pie with my family and it was a perfect amount. They also serve yummy looking breakfast dishes, but I had my eyes on the burger prize so I can't speak much to that. The service was very quick and friendly. I love watching the guys make everything right there behind the counter. I also forgot all the unique touches that make Nation's what it is, including the pump of BBQ sauce, something you rarely find anywhere else. They still have those huge onions in the burger which in my opinion is their greatest secret ingredient. The slice of pie was huge, piled on with whipped cream, and still the perfect blend of banana-ness and sweetness and crustiness that I remember. YUM is all I have to say! read more

I don't mind but to some people it's a game killer I can't do a review of Nations without mentioning their pies. That is the one area they excel in. I love Nation's Giant Hamburgers as much as the next Nor Cal Gal but this one should be dethroned, expelled, taken over by corporate, something. This place used to be the best. I didn't mind that it has never been remodeled, that the location was kinda ugly, or that they never answer their phone to place an order because their service and food used to be good and I was in LOVE with Nation's. There is nothing like Nations breakfast on a Sunday morning EXCEPT when you have a series of horrible experiences. But that is enough. I am breaking the cycle of abuse. It ends today no more chances for Fremont Nations. Here are two of the most recent examples of my heartbreak: Heartbreak # 1 We placed a breakfast order around noon (don't judge) and sat down. After over 20 minutes of waiting we went to check on the status and the server was rather rude and said they were busy. So we waited and asked again. It was then that the server lady realized they had lost our order. She began to make it and did so slowly and incorrectly. Now almost 40 minutes since we had placed our order we opted to leave. We explained our frustration and did not even get an apology. When we asked for our money back it was like pulling teeth. They then proceeded to short change us and took dozens of calculations and way too long to give us the correct change. Really? Heartbreak #2: We call ahead a pick-up order. BUSY! BUSY! BUSY Signal! Finally we get someone and place an order. When we get there our food is almost ready (even though we gave them extra time). When we finally got our food it was served with a side of major attitude! Seriously, the servers here were awful. I don't know if they are short staffed or what but there is always a line, the tables were filthy, and the servers are mean. Even when someone came to "clean" the table they just took away the dishes not even bothering to wipe off the filth. Does short order cook mean you have to be just plain short? No! After having to fight for our food, clean our own table, and not use half the silver wear because it looked unwashed I was done. No more Fremont Nation's for me. We are breaking up until they learn how to provide quality customer service, staff appropriate numbers of servers for the demand, and clean up! read more

3.5 stars but rounding up for the yummy pies. I was starving and really wanted pie for breakfast. Knowing that M would disapprove of pie for breakfast, I ordered a One Egger breakfast to make him happy, and ordered three slices of pie to go. I wonder if he ever reads my reviews because only two slices made it to dinner time haha. The breakfast meal was alright. My egg wasn't really scrambled. It more like cracked on the griddle and stirred a couple times and left alone to fry. The hash browns were dry. Bacon was alright. I wouldn't get breakfast here. In the past I've had the grilled cheese which I loved getting from the Daly City location. Ask for light mayo and onions unless you want mayo dripping out and what seems like 3/4 of a whole onion. Banana cream pie and chocolate cream pie are my faves. The custard tasted like scrambled egg and the blueberry cheesecake was mehh. It's funny that a precious Yelper mentioned that the whipped cream on top of the cream pies doesn't get cold no matter how long it's been in the fridge because it's true. It's so weird! read more

Maybe more like 3.5 but I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. I was hankering for a falafel from Falafels, etc. (Why the hell would I be going all the way out to Fremont otherwise?) But, they are closed on Monday. Saw Nation's near by and it had a been-there-forever divey dumpy feel to the place. It beckoned me in to give it a try. Insides are basic, frayed around the edges fast food chain meets the corner breakfast diner. (Apparently they serve a decent breakfast.) I ordered a cheeseburger with fries (next to no alternatives for sides). Apparently they have salmon and veggie burgers. Ordered it to go: BIG MISTAKE. I went to open up the bag and it was the most poorly assembled drippy mess I've ever had the honor of having landing in my lap. I won't be able to get up from my desk for the rest of the afternoon. It had all the standard, fresh toppings such as tomato, lettuce and onions. It had one too many tomatoes and the onion slice was at least a half an inch thick. Supercallafrajalistic expi-halitosis! Yet another reason to not get up from my desk this afternoon. No attempt to pat it down a skosh to keep it from falling apart at first handling. Needless to say, it was a bit of a dining disaster. It tasted fine; better than fine. I would probably just be as well off at a Jeffery's or the Counter where I could at least manage my own condiment construction. If I for some unexplainable reason need to have another hamburger in Fremont, I will at least know enough to eat in. read more

Nation's Giant Hamburgers & Great Pies is a rather hidden diner in the Centerville district and let's be frank, the seemingly rundown place does not seem all that appealing from the outside or even, the inside. Upon entering, the diner definitely seems aged and most of the tables are seldom clean. I shook that repulsion off and welcomed the food with an open mind. I was pleasantly surprised and had a rather excellent first impression of this place, but over time, my opinion of the joint fell to a reduced and more deserving rating after several visits to the spot. The diner has one of the most exceptional sandwiches (the Alaskan Salmon sandwich) and carry some of the most delicious, uber-fattening pies known to man. And of course, some very delicious cheesecakes. But sadly, the breakfast standards are horrendous. Grilled cheese sandwiches with onions, undercooked hash browns, stale bacon, and rather sour pancakes. I plan to stick with the burgers and pies. Apart from the food itself, customer service is key. For the most part, the staff is relatively unfriendly with the exception of one member. On top of that, my biggest pet peeve has been on display a few times at this place -- the server's lack of understanding of the words: "No onions, please." This was not just a one time occurrence, it occurred thrice. Poor service hurts the experience of the meal. read more

I love me some Nation's!! The old place on Fremont Blvd had definitely seen better days, so it's about time they did something about it. This new location on Mowry is definitely cleaner and nicer, and maybe even a little bigger, too. There's a bunch more outdoor seating for when it's nice out, too. That being said, there are a few minor drawbacks compared to the old location: parking is not as convenient, and there's a lot more traffic going through the smaller lot (but there's still plenty of parking to be had), and worse, the pies don't seem to be as good here. Maybe they still have to get their new equipment dialed in. Or maybe it was just a couple flukes. The pies at Hayward are still super delicious. I'll come back and try the pies again, because I know what they're capable of. Burgers and breakfast are delicious as always. read more

New location!!! Went to their old location after I got off work only to find the parking lot empty and signs saying that they moved. Onwards I go to their new location further down Mowry. I was really craving their burgers and Pie. I mean who goes to Nation's and doesn't get the Pie?! They now have Onion Rings here too! I love me some Onion rings and they were sure tasty onion rings at that. The new location is still all sparkley and new. Looks like it may be about the same size as their old location. Seating is nice and there are a few booth like tables. Service is still good and the food is still tasty as it has always been. I suspect that they might get some new customers as their location is much more visible than it used to be. So glad it just moved and didn't close down completely. read more

First things first. You come to Nation's not for their hamburgers but for their pies. This review is for their amazing pies. I've had their burgers here and they are decent. I would rate them 3.5 stars. But what you really come here is for the dessert despite what their name says! All of their cream pies are great: banana cream, coconut cream, and lemon cream. The crust...is flaky and crispy just the way I like it. The taste...is decadent and rich. The sweetness...is just enough but not to sweet. The calories...well don't get me started there. Sure, some of that fancy, trendy burger joints are good to try every now and then, but when you need just a simple, juicy, delicious burger, this is the place! IMHO, Nations beats out Five Guys AND In & Out! They also have awesome pies that you can order by the slice or as a whole. After enduring a hard workout over the weekend, I figured I could treat myself to some gluttony: a good old fashioned burger. I knew where this Nation's was located and I had fond memories back in my past East San Jose days when I went to my neighborhood Nation's for breakfast or a burger with my family. Today, there are no longer any Nation's locations in the South Bay but thankfully, the East Bay has plenty of locations and this one is closest to my work. I'm glad to see that they still keep things relatively simple. They have burgers and pies. According to the menu, every burger is 3/4 lb before cooking...that's insane! And pricing wise, it wasn't very expensive either...less than $5 for a cheeseburger. So that got me to thinking...dare I get a slice of pie too? They usually have a bunch of regular selections but the one that I most fondly remember is the banana creme pie. Once again, all my warm and fuzzy food memories are flooding back into my noggin. Cheeseburger and slice of banana creme pie for lunch it is! The cheeseburger was very large without a doubt. They don't skimp on the meat or the lettuce, tomato, and onions that come with it. As a result, it does make it a bit difficult to eat but besides that, it was tasty. The pie was a nice sweet way to cleanse all of that greasy feelings away with the taste of sweet banana creme filling mixed with whipped cream. Salty and sweet in the same meal...perfect! The interior dining room won't win any awards as it has a very dated diner vibe going on here. However, that won't stop me from coming back here and getting another burger on maybe in the morning for an omelette or pancakes instead. A whole pie from them is only $12 and since I don't see a Marie Callender's nearby, this Nation's could be a future stop for me if I ever needed to bring something for a potluck function. read more

This place is above exceptional. Maybe not so much in service but they make up for it in food taste. I normally order a bacon cheeseburger with fries and a drink and a slice of pie. The burger is always cooked to perfection, tender and moist, with fresh toppings such as lettuce and tomatoes and onions. We came here for breakfast before going to the Fremont Festival of the Arts today. It is located near the festival. I got a bowl of Chili and my wife got a Nation,s regular breakfast. The chili tasted salty when I tasted it - I tried to eat it but it was rather hard when all I could taste was salt. My wife's bacon was thin and greasy and they had smothered her toast with too much butter. Coffee was rather bland, also. Prices were reasonable, but the food was not the greatest - quality was just not there today. The facilities were not in the greatest of shape - it still looked like they needed to do some remodeling, or at least some repair work. I have been coming to Nation for breakfast for years my father brought me here first as a young boy, and we continued the tradition on my visits all the way up until his passing. And now I am bringing my SO here. It's an old style diner, with very hearty breakfasts made on a grill right in front of you while you wait. The food is always good, served fast and cooked to order. The portions are definitely Harty you fill up on a plate and is not to hard on the wallet. If you're looking for something cheap filling and fast this is the place to go. Absolutely terrible customer service. Food is somewhat okay, even though they tend to mess up orders quite a bit. Adolfo the "Shift Leader" definitely needs to work on his attitude a bunch. I went in to pick up my online order and he was having trouble finding my order for some reason after repeating and spelling out my name multiple times. He then repeatedly asked for the order receipt, I first showed him the email receipt, and he proceeded to roll his eyes and tell me it showed nothing. Astonished, I jumped to the app which showed the same exact thing the email did, and he and the 2 other workers were all dumbfounded. And yes, the whole line of workers needed to help him find my order. He then grumpily walked away and another employee told me my order was getting boxed. No apology, no nothing. I tried to order pies for Christmas by phone one of the supervisors picked up the phone and said she didn't have time to talk. So, I drove to the restaurant to buy my pies. At the time I arrived I knew who was talking on the phone with me with rudely voice. I saw there weren't many customers in the store, and why she didn't have time to talk on the phone. When I arrived she was at the cashier station and asked me with the RUDELY VOICE again what i want. I forgot her name, but I knew she was indian woman and a badge said supervisor. While I was ordering pies she was rudely asking me. I told her can I have haft pie of each flavor she said NO. And then, i asked her again can i have haft of the pecan pie? She said yes. Then, I asked her again if I could get haft pie of each flavor she said "YOU CHANGED YOUR MIND AGAIN" I didn't think I changed my mind. She made me embarrassed front of many people around me. I did ask her in the beginning and I didn't know why she yelled at me so much with the rudely voice Event on the phone. i went there last year, but i didnt have any experience like that. I hope HR or the owner should look for this or retrain their supervisor's attitude. The rest of the staffs under this supervisor were nicer than her with the welcome smile. This is now one of the closest Nation's locations to me! What can I say, I've always been a fan of Nation's Burgers. They use to have a South Bay location where I grew up in San Jose (Sierra Rd/Piedmont Rd), that was almost a once a week ritual for my family as I was growing up. It was a sad sad day when they closed that location. This Fremont location, although small, still stays true to what Nation's customers want! Which is great burgers and pies... I will admit, this location has always met my expectations and cured my cravings of the Giant Hamburgers! The thing that makes these burgers so great are that they are simple...it's back to the basic with Nation's, no frills.
