Nation's burger, not your typical fast food, I would consider this more of a gourmet type of fast food. They also don't only sell burgers. They have sandwiches, breakfast meals, and pies. Food is great quality and would recommend for a better fast food choice. Occasionally we would come here for breakfast or lunch with the coupons we receive in the mail. The Hayward location is a bit run down compared to let's say Castro Valley location. It just needs a renovation. read more

Nations's Giant Hamburgers has always been a burger and pie option when growing up. For whatever reason, I haven't visited in a while but find myself stopping here for my Uncle who asked for a custard pie from Nations'. Place is clean and can get very busy during peak times. Fortunately, I visited when no line and quickly greeted and ordered. Display case fully stocked with pies: pumpkin, lemon meringue, coconut creme, apple, strawberry, chocolate creme, pecan....and the custard pie! A slice will cost $7 so best to get a whole pie...darn, I'll have to do that next time and get a burger! :) I do remember the burgers, grilled cheese, onion rings and breakfast options hit the spot. ORDERED: - hamburger $9.95 The mayo tasted sour. No idea if this was meant to be aka their secret sauce as I only tried this location once. Patty moist but flavorless. Lettuce crispy and no brown bits. Onions very very very spicy and leaves the lingering film. - onion rings $4.95 This is legit what you get in the frozen section. Exactly jack in the box mixed with Burger King. Onions leave the lingering film as well. Neat that they include ranch dressing. - slice of blueberry cheesecake (I think this was $6.95) Whole blueberries turned into a liquidity gelatinous fruit sauce! Cheesecake was very creamy. Very very very thin crust. Wished there was more of a bite via the crust. SERVICE: Lady was very friendly and kind. Thoroughly spoke of their rewards program with the uttermost respect and patience. Advised that there are other condiments to take on the side. Props to including the utensils and napkins without asking. AMBIANCE: Very old school diner esque vibes. Casual dining. Opens late! This review is strictly for the whole Apple Pie purchased a few days ago... I was on the hunt for a very very very last minute pie- APPLE PIE to be exact. After attempt #1's location being completely wiped clean, I was thinking of heading to a well known grocery store. Unfortunately, I was not willing to hop back on the freeway and loop all the way around due to already passing its vicinity. With Nation's being not too far of a detour, I opted to give their apple pie a try since the posts on Yelp seemed promising and the banana cream pie I had here [YEARS AGO] was really enjoyed. Parking was a breeze and from what I could see, there was only one couple seated in the entire joint. I made my way up to the pie case and was so happy to see an abundance of pie options. I made the purchase and was out the door fairly quickly. Fast forward to pie time, the pie was okay. With the crust looking pretty pale we made the decision to pop the tray into the oven to warm up and get a bit of a tan. The filling flavor was doable- not the worst but certainly not the best. The crust is where the biggest disappointment lies. It was bland and lacked that flakey, butteriness you would typically find. 2 stars. Good ol' Costco would have come through with a larger serving, better taste/quality, and saved me some coins!! Meh. read more

I was happy to find a Nations spot in Fremont as there are more stores located in East Bay. I was really craving a burger and a piece of pie and they definitely didn't disappoint! The cashier who took our order and the staff were super friendly. They were patient when we wanted to look at the pie display and answer all our questions. Just had breakfast at Nations in Fremont. The food was delicious. I didn't think I would be able to finish it all because they gave me so much but I cleaned my plate. Susana took our order and she was nice and friendly. We have ordered their pies for years but hadn't gone to breakfast here in a while. We love their hamburger at lunch time. Disappointed with Nations in Hayward I don't often write reviews, but my experience at Nations Hamburgers in Hayward was so frustrating that I felt compelled to share. My son absolutely loves pie, so when his birthday rolled around, I decided to get him an apple pie from Nations, a place I thought highly of. I drove to the Hayward location on my way back from work in SF since it was on the way to Fremont. The guy who helped me was very nice and I even tipped him. I made the comment that "oh you guys changed the box " since you can now see the pie as opposed to the old all cardboard boxes. Later that evening, we sang happy birthday to my son, and my wife even stuck candles in the pie. Unfortunately, when we cut into the pie later that evening, it was not apple as we expected--it was boysenberry. Talk about a letdown during a birthday celebration! I called the restaurant and spoke with Jhon, who was very friendly and helpful (turns out to be the same guy who helped me in the restaurant). He tried to refund me over the phone with no luck. He spoke with his manager Ophelia. He assured me that if I brought my receipt back within 24 hours, they would process a refund--and I certainly made a mental note of that. However, when I returned the next day after work, I was met with further frustration. The manager, Ophelia, was nowhere to be found. The cashier, while sympathetic to my situation, called Ophelia on her cell phone for guidance. Here's where things got really infuriating. Ophelia said she couldn't help me because I didn't bring back the pie. I explained that Jhon never mentioned that I needed to return the pie, just the receipt. After all, it was my son's birthday, and I couldn't very well serve something nothing when we believed an apple pie was there. I made sure not to touch a slice, until Jhon had assured me a refund was possible! Ophelia repeated that she couldn't assist me and was on vacation until April 13. When I asked how there wasn't anyone else who could help in her absence, she simply said no. This complete lack of support and accountability was astounding. I've come to expect better service from Nations, which is why this experience stood out as unacceptable. Overall, I feel let down by the whole situation. My son doesn't like cake and was looking forward to enjoying his favorite delicious apple pie from Nations. Instead, his birthday memory is tainted by this experience. Unfortunately, I think it's safe to say we'll be taking our business to the Fremont location in the future, where they seem to know how to treat their customers better. So, for anyone considering visiting this Nations location, please think twice. You might just find yourself in a similar predicament. **Update** I spoke to Ophelia and she said well I can actually help you when I get back from vacation. Just write your phone number down and I will text you when your refund is ready. So I'll look forward to that in 13 days. It still blows my mind that there's nobody else that can help in that situation while the manager is away, but I'll raise the grade to a D for the overall final attempt. We dined here on a Saturday afternoon. Not a lot of people. Lots of parking. The cashier was polite, place was clean. I ordered the hamburger and my husband ordered the cheeseburger. The burgers were really big, with lettuce onion and tomato. I enjoyed the burger but the burger could be thicker, lol! The beef was juicy and delicious. The burger was only around 8 bucks and the cheeseburger was only around $9 something, maybe that's why the burger wasn't that thick,lol! The fries are ok. The women who rang us up wasn't friendly at all, bland expressions and I got the impression her look translated into "hurry up and order". Come to find out she left work shortly after we ordered perhaps she had a long shift and just wanted to be outta there. Honestly, totally relatable but from a customer stand point it set the tone off not well for my kids and I. I went with 3 stars because there is no kids menu and I paid $9 for my 7 year old to eat a little more then half her cheese burger. I use to love the lemon meringue pie. Purchased one on mother's day, got home sliced it, and the meringue was like soap suds, not cooked running onto the plate before you could sit down to eat it. I returned it the next day, the replacement was worse. It was bubbling out, just raw wripped egg whites. I will not be purchasing anymore pies from this nation. "Nation's Giant Hamburgers" is a 70+ year old diner style restaurant chain with locations mostly in the San Francisco Bay Area. There's also locations in Vallejo, Benicia, Napa, Vacaville, and Tracy. Most locations stay open late, and serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The other night I was in Hayward, and decided to stop by the Nation's Hamburgers near Jackson Street & Santa Clara St. That's in Gateway Plaza, the shopping mall with the Luckys Supermarket. It was about 9:30pm, and there was about 8-10 diners in restaurant. This location has a large dining room, with tables and comfy booths. There were three women working behind the counter. Everything is made fresh, except the pies in the display case. I ordered: a Cheeseburger w/ light onions, Fries, and a slice of Apple Pie. Total: $20.79 Cheeseburger, Grade (4/5), For $9.10 you get a 1/3-lb old fashioned style cheeseburger grilled fresh. Generous amount of lettuce, tomato, onion and condiments. I asked for "light onions" because Nation's has this reputation of putting a thick slice of raw onion on your burger. I'm telling you, I was at the Jack London location one time.....the onion slice was 3/8" thick! You could use it for a doorstop! Anyway back to Hayward, the cheeseburger bun wasn't toasty hot. Otherwise, a very good cheeseburger. Fries, Grade (4/5), For $3.40 you get one size of fries. But the fried potatoes are fairly thick. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Eat them right away, the holding time for fries is only 7-10 mins. Apple Pie Slice, $6.40, actually it looks like a 1/4 of a pie. Fresh, not too sweet, lots of juicy apple. Service, Grade (4/5): Service was prompt and friendly. Everything is cook to order, so the crew is busy. No table service. They just call out your number and hand you your food. Best Tip: always order in person or directly from the restaurant. Delivery apps like DoorDash may pad prices. This location has plenty of parking, and it's easy to find right off Hwy 92 & I-880. read more
