For me the most egregious error is the lack of friendliness. This is true both in Moraga and Orinda. You're meant to feel like they're doing you a favor by ordering food. I grew up with this Nations and always raved about it to out of towners, praising their burgers and pies. Not sure when it went down hill, but the quality has been so poor lately. Their chocolate/banana pies have extremely soggy crusts, the cheesecake tastes so fake (and I'm pretty sure used to be taller), and their apple pies are mostly corn starchy goop. Their onion rings are worse than captain crunch in that they'll up rip up the roof of your mouth. Too thick of batter that's overly fried. The only saving grace are their burgers, which are getting borderline gross as they're getting soggier and soggier. I'm always disappointed after a meal here now. read more

I love Nation's! There I said it and am done....just kidding! It's so nice to have a regular old fashioned hamburger with OG toppings. Sometimes crisp iceberg lettuce, tomatoes and sliced onions is all that is needed versus smashed, fried egg, blue cheese etc. Today, is pi day so a nice healthy slice of lemon meringue is what was in order. They have a seasonal blueberry pie which was tempting but the guy at the register said to go with the lemon which happens to be my favorite anyway. The crazy is flakey, lemony custard and a big layer of meringue completes this delightfully light treat. Parking is easy and there are usually plenty of seats. I drove all the way to Nations today because I got a text message that they were offering 50% off for one day only, as a football promotional offer. I went there and they would not honor their advertisement the girl there could barely speak English and she told me that was just for buy one get one free I said that's not what it says, it says 50% off any meal one day only it didn't say buy one get one free and they wouldn't honor what they advertise very unprofessional. I would've made a bigger scene but there was a lot of customers there. I will never go back there again just because of their unprofessionalism and that they wouldn't honor their advertisement I will definitely not recommend them to anybody read more

Everyone we visit that place my husband and I are reminiscing of our college days when we were young and broke and dining at Nation's was our treat! Since then not a lot change :-) however, they do have vegan burgers and no sugar added apple pie to support your dietary needs. We order vegan burger, regular burger, eggs with pancakes. Burgers were delicious (and yes even the vegan one), eggs were great, however pancakes were below average/tasteless and chewy,like they were made from old batter. I will recommend the side of hush brown instead. The highlight was of course the apple pie with no sugar added. Truly tasted like a homemade treat. Service was on a slow side, however given the obvious limited resources that place had, that did a good job! The service here is sub par. The hours on the window state that they're open til 10 pm; but we were turned away at 9:20 because they had shut people down. If that's the case the hours should be 9:00 pm so they can adjust accordingly. They also kicked out people who were able to order ahead of us and told them they couldn't eat in the dining hall. Went here after the gym because I didn't want to cook anything for dinner tonight I ordered a hamburger with grilled onions, onion rings, and a slice of banana crème pie. My onion rings looked and tasted burnt so I asked a waiter if I can get another tray of it. The second time it tasted much better. I was most excited for the banana crème pie, but when I ate it, it lacked banana flavor. Overall, this place is average. I might come back to try out their other pie flavors though. read more

Nations pies and burgers keeps me coming back. The pies are affordable yet absolutely delicious. The burger is a perfect bite of beef to condiments to lettuce-tomato-onion ratio. The bread is soft and grilled! I wanted to give a huge shout out to the ladies there tonight for spending time to make our family a whole fresh strawberry pie! So much strawberry over a flaky crust! We usually find an excuse to get it at least once a summer when it's in season. As for the rest of the year the banana cream pie is our go-to. Very light and creamy, good banana flavor and not too sweet. The bite is so balanced you can sit there and keep eating. It's very hard to stop. Sometimes the wait isn't great. Inside is dark and drabby. But I focus on what Nation's is truly about, their pies and their burgers. For that, it's definitely 5 stars! read more

This Nation's location is in desperate need of a remodel. Sinking chairs, broken floors, AC always kept high. It' is freezing in the winter too in this location and is the food cools down very quickly. The tables are always left dirty (possibly from the night before) music is always loud but ... they still have the best eggs around . Bad experience, will not be back to this location. Took 30 minutes to make pancakes and sausage and the manager Lorena told me it was because the sausage comes in frozen and takes longer to cook. The receipt has the time the order was placed and it took exactly 28 minutes from placing the order to the food being done. Lorena was very rude when she aggressively put my bag down on the counter, did not apologize for the wait nor did she say anything when she put the bag down. I asked for a partial refund and she said no the reason being the sausage was frozen and the food was cooking the entire 28 minutes. I was late back to work and found no utensils in the bag. I've always thought this Nation's to be better than others, and though I haven't gone much at all the past decade or so, tonight I had a bit of nostalgia and circumstance put me in the location when I was very hungry. I just ordered a bacon cheeseburger; the soda machine was broken so I took the food to go. What a mess. The top bun was burnt, the bacon too crisp, the cheese not melted and most importantly the burger progressively fell apart until the end when it was just a loose pile of lettuce, onions, parts of a burger, and a bun that was hardly resembling a bun anymore. They do get some points for ambiance but the friendliness and cheerfulness from the staff was lacking and the bottom line was that the burger was an epic fail. Never again. read more
