After yoga, my friends got Southern-fried unhealthiness, and I would have joined them had I not partook in my Southern friend's Paula Deen-style, instantly diabetic viddles the night before. Broadway bowl was recommended to me by the owner--it was really good, especially the scallions and the miso-like, peanut-ginger-sesame sauce with garlic tofu. The only gripe I had for something so healthy, they bitterly charred the tofu--probably for another dimension of flavor. This place was very close to where I was staying. I ended up ordering the buffalo bowl, it had pretty good kick to it. After I ordered it took about five minutes for the food to come out. They did a great job with the tofu, it tasted like chicken. The texture of the tofu was equivalent to chicken, i'm not a vegan by any means. I'm really impressed everything tasted, clean and healthy. This is my favorite food cart out of all the food carts in that food cart area. They are always open on time which the other food carts next to native bowl sometimes struggle to do! I have tried the Broadway bowl and the other bowl that is similar to the Broadway bowl but has spinach. I didn't like the bowl with spinach. For me, the spinach doesn't go well in that bowl. NB is an awesome vegan option in this cart pod, which is becoming one of the best in the city. Their bowls are generous in size and they have some interesting options to choose from. The house-made sauces they add are tasty and you can usually count on them to be open (unlike some other carts in the area). I'm not really a fan of the faux-chicken soy curl stuff, and thankfully they're happily willing to replace any of it with garbanzo beans, which open up the menu for me. It'd be nice if they had another non-soy option (pinto/black beans), along with quinoa (instead of white rice) to mix it up with too. The Mississippi bowl is my go-to, but honestly they're all great. I'm not vegan or vegetarian but always enjoy a tasty, healthy meal from Native Bowl. The guys running it are always friendly and cool too. One of my favorite carts in town. read more

Had lunch at the carts yesterday and the main dish was from Native Bowl. I had the Mississippi Bowl and my friend had the Couch Bowl. Both were excellent and made fresh to order. There was a ten minute or so wait for the food but we were informed when we ordered. Great touch! The cabbage and other vegetables in my Mississippi Bowl were crisp with enough dressing to add flavor without over powering the vegetables or adding excessive extra calories. I was intrigued to try the BBQ Soy Curls. They were tasty and kinda chewy, lot more substance than you would normally associate with tofu. The spinach in the Couch Bowl was fresh and crisp. The Kochujang sweet and spicy sauce was spicy without being over powering. My friend who is an avowed vegan food hater at the Couch Bowl and loved it, Of course I didn't point out that Native Bowl is a vegan cart until after we ate lunch. I did have three small niggling complaints, neither of which would keep me from coming back again and again. 1) They use the typical Chinese to go container to serve the food. This means that the rice is way at the bottom and not easily mixed in with the vegetables. While I try and avoid white rice like the plague I do like to eat my rice with the vegetables. I'd have happily paid an extra nickel for a paper plate. 2) No brown rice. I don't know how you can bill yourself as a healthy food purveyor and not have brown rice. 3) Very limited drink choices and no diet drinks. They were so patient when I was struggling to decide between the Garlic Tofu with Fire Breathing Dragon sauce or the Sriracha lime buffalo chik'n with dill peppercorn ranch and cilantro kale superfood salad. -There's a dozen or so bowls to choose from, most on the mild side, but I was all about the spicy. I also wanted to balance it out with some crunchy greens. They were so helpful when they suggested a custom bowl so I could get the garlic tofu with the fire breathing dragon sauce AND the cilantro kale superfood salad. I will definitely be back to get the sriracha lime buffalo chik'n. All the flavors made my taste buds dance. This is raveworthy food. read more

I have seen the other yelp reviewers be very excited about receiving their bowls, but I have not had the same experience. Yes, the food was quick, but it really was a disappointment. On the menu, my bowl seemed decadent, and flavorful, but here's what it was actually like. I got the Alberta bowl, and overall, as a person who loves sauce on my food, I do have to say that there was far too much sauce on my bowl, and yet it was flavorless. Overall, I was disappointed, and almost spat out my food (it took me five minutes to swallow one bite, it was revolting). Would not recommend to anyone I even remotely liked. I would only give the one star because of the speed in the making of the food. Will not be coming back anytime soon. read more

The food is always amazing and spot on; I love how they have been incorporating new creative dishes at the cart. I have never had a bad experience at this cart in the 3+ years I have been going here. For food I would give them a 4, for attitude I would give them a one. Came here on a break from work with my boss and while waiting we checked our work email on our phones. The gentleman working thought he should exit the food truck, come over to us and ask if we ever had conversations in "real life" or if we were just always on our phones. Not only was that comment unwarranted and unappreciated it was also wrong. The Broadway and the Ole Miss (Mississippi) are the two biggest sellers and don't you know that was my lucky day b/c that's EXACTLY what I ordered, before even being aware of their respective popularity quotients! There is a friggin' avalanche of tasty, saucy veggies atop each of these steamin' bowls o' rice! I love it! I'll be returning! Battle Ground, WA. This is where my hunger pangs set in during a drive back to PDX from Seattle. Apparently Battle Ground is not a culinary mecca, unless you want marinated meth or baked bath salts. I decided to endure the 36 miles til Portland for some healthy, real food, but my equally as famished friends and I needed something in North Portland stat. After a few days of pizza, chocolate, and wine, Native Bowl was a needed detox. The citizens of Battle Ground should really bite into these delicious rice bowls rather than bite people's faces off while high on chemicals. One chomp into these made-from-scratch bowls o' goodness, and you'll never want to taint your temple with anything toxic ever again. My bowl was the Couch-jasmine rice, bean sprouts, spinach, carrots, garlic tofu, and sesame seeds. All of the bowls are like the best parts of the farmers market were dumped into one container. The Couch was also super spicy, even more so than the Broadway bowl, which had 'fire breathing sauce'. Definitely deserves some 'Hot Stuff' compliments. In the words of someone fabulous I know, these bowls are 'sooo what's up'-SWU. Forget having to track down this truck-it's parked in the same place permanently, so when Battle Ground is ready, they'll know where to find it. All of Native Bowl's truckie neighbors looked like they were hawking some delicious fare, but not returning to Native Bowl for some nutritious nibbles would be impossible, especially at $6.50 a pop. Not sure of the going price for bath salts, but a deal like this is too good to pass by. read more

From what I can tell, Native Bowl kicks some serious butt with all of their bowls. That being said... DAT BROADWAY DOE. Rice, garlic tofu, peanut ginger sauce, cilantro, shredded red cabbage, carrots, scallions, and toasted sesame seeds. I could eat this every meal for the rest of my life and never think twice about other food. My boyfriend got the Hollywood, which knocked our respective socks off too. Rice, za'atar, lemon tahini sauce, pepperoncinis, garbanzo beans, shredded red cabbage, pita chips, and scallions... It was a little strange eating the pita chips with the ricey bowl of stuff, but after a few bites I was in a nomming craze and couldn't stop eating his either. Totally down with the bowl. read more

Native Bowl has me by the...stomach. It's one of those foods that haunt me. I mean, when I'm craving a burrito the place is often negotiable but when I'm craving Native Bowl nothing else will suffice. Coming to this food cart pod I have had every intention of trying other carts...but just cannot bring myself to do so. Even more redundant, I order the same damn thing every time. The Couch Bowl. Which has rice, spinach, carrots, tofu, some other veggies, and magical spicy sauce. I am normally happy with the small but the large is good for sharing if no one is starving. I think the small is 6$..which is pushing it. I'd really like to see brown rice added to the mix..you know.. as if this isn't healthy enough. It wasn't love at first sight, or bite for that matter. In fact even still I think the man who works here is kind of a jerk. There is a lovely lady however that restores my faith in the cart. What I love about the Native Bowl is that is fills you up, without making you feel heavy and useless for the next few hours. It's a nice healthy choice! read more

First off, super nice people. I placed an order for the "Alberta Bowl" and was told "Here, have this one. I just made it for my own lunch, but I can make another." Then as I was leaving a young woman approached and said that her meal was so good she just wanted to say thanks to the people who ran the cart. My mouth started to water and I rushed back to the office. Everybody in the office kept asking what it was that I was eating and where I found it. The bowl was delicious. Does her secret lie in the amazing food? I'm going to assume YES and continue to frequent this adorable cart in the new Mississippi Marketplace. I recently had the chili pie bowl and just about cried with joy. It had everything I could possibly want piled together: crunchy, salty, saucy, sweet, creamy and spicy! YUM! I had a similar mouthgasm when I tried the mac and cheese, which I am certain would convince even the hardcore dairy lovers to cross over to the compassionate side. I love Native Bowl! My only complaint is their hours. You have to go early, as they close at 5 or 6 every night. All of the bowls are vegan, and they are all super delicious! They are pretty healthy, as well, and the vanilla peach iced tea is amazing! If they had 3 more carts around town, it still wouldn't be enough! They technically only accept cash, but there is an ATM literally 10 feet away. If you haven't been, it's in a cart pod right next to Prost! on the corner of Skidmore and Mississippi. There are several options for omnivores and vegans/vegetarians alike. The seating is all picnic style on an asphalt pad under a large canopy. There is also outside seating at Prost!, but make sure you order something inside first, out of basic respect. The food carts are pretty kid friendly, I take my 2 year old daughter all the time, and she loves it. Native Bowls are about $5 to $7, and they are the perfect amount of food. read more

To be honest, it's more like a 3.5. Native Bowl is a rather cute vegan cart which offers about four bowls (the Mississippi, Alberta, Couch, and Broadway) and a couple of sandwich options. I decided to go with the Couch Bowl, as I had been craving Korean food recently (it says it features a "spicy-sweet Korean sauce"), and I was sadly disappointed and wonderfully surprised with my choice at the same time. Granted, it was really tasty (even peanutty?!), and I really enjoyed the combination of grated carrots (SO GOOD! I NEVER KNEW!), sprouts, greens, scallions, tofu, sesame seeds, and rice (side note: azn me definitely wanted more rice), but damn, this was nowhere near "Korean" in flavor! To be honest, I guess I was thinking it would be something more kalbi-ish/Korean BBQ-ish, but it's more like a red sauce...but it's not like kimchee...or taegu... So what is it? Tasty as it is, it just didn't feel "Korean." DAMN. Looks like I'm gonna have to get my Korean fix somewhere else. Despite the minor deception, and the somewhat indecent price (for a cart...) for the small amount of food ($6...and I was still hungry!) I'm definitely gonna check out Native Bowl again. read more

What I love & Why: 1. The Reuben. Have I ever had a 'real' one? Nope. Have I ever had an unsatisfactory vegan one? You bet your sweet sauce I have. (Bad vegan reubens are so sad) Julie makes some kick-ass seitan, uses, Daiya (the only commercial vegan cheese I'll associate with), buttery grilled bread, special sauce and some sauerkraut: makes for a delicious, DELICIOUS sammy. 2. Cake cup. Chocolaty? Check. Quick? Check. Warm & Gooey? Check, check. Five. Stars. Don't let the paper cup or the price fool you. I went with a large Alberta Bowl, a "medium-spicy" dish of Jasmine rice, garlic tofu, Fire-Breathing Dragon Sauce (probably sriracha and mayonnaise), house-made furikake (mainly consisting of nori seaweed and toasted sesame seeds), shredded green cabbage, carrots, and scallions. But hey, this was one of the best vegetarian bowls I've ever had...well worth the $7.50. It was basically bold flavor after bold flavor just hitting me left, right, up, down, front, and back. Refreshing fresh vegetables, salty/toasty furikake, and taste bud-awakening Dragon sauce, and garlicky, properly cooked tofu. Perhaps a little citrus (i.e., lime) could have worked to cut some of the bold flavors and make it a little more balanced, but this is still a dish I would order over and over again! This place is SO good. I've had both the Burnside and the Buffalo bowls and they're both delicious and you get a TON of food. The vegan 'chicken' is satisfying and filling, there's always plenty of sauce, and the toppings/flavor combinations are unique and nutritious. Bonus - none of their food is made with cashews, which I appreciate as a person with an allergy. It can be difficult to find good cashew-free vegan food. Anyway, definitely give this place a try!
