I'm not a vegan. I'm not a vegetarian. I am a foodie with discriminating taste buds that prefer an awesome Ruben from an outstanding Jewish (non-kosher) deli over just about anything in the world, except for the Ruben from Native Bowl. In addition to that mind blowing sandwich, which I've been craving ever since, I also shared a Mississippi Bowl and a Grilled Cheese with some friends. Everything I tasted was off the hook delicious. If I could get vegan cooking like this on the regular, I'd have no problem changing my diet. Also, the service was impeccable - super friendly people, the food was made quickly (but not too quickly - if you can bang out a sandwich in 30 seconds, keep your not so fresh ingredients to yourself!), and the prices were totally reasonable. I'm from San Francisco so things are much more expensive here, but even compared to other places I tried out on my trip this was the best bang for my buck - healthy, large portions, and no death to wallet. Vegan Desserts? Yes please! I was waiting for food to be made at other carts when my eyes caught a glimpse of the desserts. Macaroon cookies w/chocolate chunks in it? Warm chocolate cake in a paper cup with chocolate sauce on top? I got both. The Macaroons are simply THE BEST I have ever had. Not too sweet, not too moist, not too many chocolate chunks in there... PERFECTION. The cake in the cup with the sauce? I wanted to love it so badly. It looked so naughty, so decadent... but... it didn't blow me away. I am not sure what it was? Could it be that the awesomeness of the macaroon was causing me and my tastebuds to see other sweets as inferior? Because of this uncertainty, I pledge to return soon and try the cake in the cup! I walk up, order the daily feature. Dude behind the window says, "mmmm yeah that's a good one. I especially like it with ... (some sort of house garlic clove) and ______(something else I can't remember). Wanna try it like that?" I generally like recommendations. And HE WAS RIGHT. the garlic was an excellent touch. The dish was so delicious that 20 minutes after eating, I opened it back up and finished the leftovers I intended to save for dinner. Every time I show up and want to try other stuff but in the end... I always get the same thing, the "Homemade Miso Bowl"!!!!!! Came for a Sunday lunch while visiting with my vegan friend and his girlfriend. We ordered three different bowls, all of which were delicious (if a bit small for the money). My only complaint is the way they're served...deep yet small bowls. You eat with chopsticks, and it's fairly hard to mix up the ingredients, since the bowl is prepared with everything in layers (seems to be a Portland specialty). Plus the tables in the common seating area are those metal mesh tables, so a little drop of sauce was able to drip on my pants :/ But the meal was tasty and it was a relaxing place to eat, so I still enjoyed it. read more

Definitely in the top tier of food carts around Portland. I had the Broadway Bowl because I love peanut sauce and sesame seeds. I generally try to avoid eating white rice, but there I was scarfing down every last grain of it I could find in order to soak up as much of that delicious sauce as I could get. read more

Hawthorne bowl was so good. There were multiple level of goodness in the bowl with the veggies, garbanzo beans, tofu and curry adding depths of flavor. I came here on a Sunday for lunch. I'm not vegan or vegetarian and was deciding on eating here or getting the pork belly dish from another cart. I decided to go healthy. The ingredients sounded very good and I ordered the Broadway Bowl, after I was told that it was one of their most popular bowls. *** Broadway Bowl *** Grilled Tofu, house-made peanut ginger sauce, fluffy jasmine rice, shredded red cabbage, carrots, scallions & cilantro. A bit of a wait, but WOW, it was delicious! The peanut ginger sauce was fantastic and I'm so happy I ordered it. It was filling and the cabbage and carrots provided nice crunch with the tofu and rice. I'll definitely come back, and look forward to trying the other bowls. I decided to pay $1.50 more for the large and took the leftovers home for a nice snack. read more

I would wait an hour in line every day for the burnside bowl! Luckily there is almost never a wait. Just a few minutes while they make it fresh just for you. All the bowls are awesome but I am pretty sure the burnside is one of the most popular. It has the perfect combination of fresh slaw, veggies, beyond chicken, rice and sauce. The Mississippi was pretty much amazing. Soy curls texture is comparable to meat and the flavors are on point.

So my last review wasn't particularly laudable; they were closed during a time their yelp says they're open. After I left my review, they sent me a message apologizing and gave me their true hours. They said that Google and Yelp haven't allowed them to change the hours listed, which is unfortunate. There needs to be a better system for that. But anyway! I finally made my way back over there today and got to try their delicious bowls. My husband and I got a Burnside bowl and a Broadway bowl. Both an amazing portion for the price. All of the ingredients were very fresh and light, yet hearty and the same time. The Burnside bowl had just the right amount of spice, and there was a good amount of the peanut sauce in the Broadway. All in all, I'm thankful that they reached out to me; that shows good business. And I am also thankful I went back! It was definitely worth it. Will return asap! read more

I live across the street so I go here a lot for dinner. For just $10, you get a large enough meal to easily feed 2, and it's quite tasty. I usually get the buffalo bowl - it's spicy and zesty but not too hot. Also love the hollywood bowl and the burnside bowl. The owner is always super nice and will take time to explain anything on the menu for you. There's almost never a wait (if there is, it's like 5 minutes) and the outdoor seating is perfect for an evening or a weekend afternoon. My only wish- I would love smaller portions if they were available. I can never finish a whole bowl, and it seems wasteful if I dont eat it for leftovers. That's hardly a complaint though! read more

This was one of only a couple carts in this cart cluster open for lunch on a Tuesday, which is already awesome. I don't understand why so many places in Portland are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Doesn't the beginning of the week suck enough? Anyway, I cannot remember what my bowl was called, but it's the one with chickpeas and optional pita chips. It wasn't too spicy which is something I asked for and I loved the fresh cabbage on top. I got the small bowl for six bucks and it was just right. I have trouble when I go to the food cart pods because there are so many choices - usually I will spend about 10 minutes wandering, looking at people's food, and deciding what sounds good. My hubby usually is my deciding factor, because he will have already ordered and eaten half his food by the time I've narrowed it down to two. I finally panicked when the carts started closing on me. I ended up getting the Couch Bowl, which was a perfectly layered masterpiece of vegetarian spicy goodness! There was spinach, green onions, perfectly grilled tofu, carrots, jasmine rice and some really nice spicy gochujang (korean hot pepper paste). It was very reminiscent of bibimbap, a korean dish that I love, but with no meat. I am in no way a vegetarian, but I found myself full and satisfied after this feast. Def going to have to go back and try the much lauded broadway bowl. read more

The little cluster of food carts on N. Mississippi just might be my new favorite foodie destination in Portland. I now feel the need to try every single one of them, but what really brought me there was Native Bowl. I don't know what seasonings Native Bowl puts on their grilled tofu, but it is hands-down one of the best ways I've ever had tofu prepared for me. I ordered the Alberta Bowl, which featured an intriguing "spicy dragon sauce," and being a fan of heat I just had to try it. The bowl comes on a bed of steamed jasmine rice, with the grilled tofu, carrots, cabbage, green onion and sauce on top. Sufficiently-spicy, flavorful, hot and fresh! I enjoyed the ethos of Native Bowl, (as a minor caveat, though, I wonder how "native" all of the ingredients were), and its emphasis on healthy vegan cooking. I cannot wait to go back and try their house-made vegan sausage. read more

Let's get one thing up front, I'm no vegan. However, after reading The Oregonian article about their use of soy curls at this cart, I had to give it a try. I was NOT disappointed! I had the Mississippi Bowl, and it was just an absolute treat--the flavor of their soy curls combined with the rice and slaw and bbq sauce was just outstanding to say the least. It's located in the pleasant Mississippi Marketplace and you're more than welcome to bring your "bowl" into the Prost pub to enjoy a beer if you're so inclined. The folks that run this cart are very nice, too. I'm interested to try some of their other concoctions but I'm so hooked on the Mississippi that I can't seem to get to the other bowls offered!
