My husband seen a reel on Instagram of this place saying that is better than Porto's. I honestly thought it would be an Asian bakery so I'm in. We came for some ramen in the area and we thought it would be perfect to just give it a try. Turns out I s more like a Mexican bakery making some Porto's favorites. I had a Refujiado and it's wasn't bad, but not as others that I've had. Another thing I didn't like is that my bread was really smashed by the time a got home. They trIed to put as many pieces of bread in a bag. No box. I did however love their empanada de calabaza (pumpkin). I was looking for tres leches cake and found this place. This is a small hole in the wall bakery in the 626 area. A lot of people compare their pastries with Porto's, which made me curious to give it a try. I got the tres leches cake slice, and a dozen pastries for (6 cheese rolls, 3 guava, and 3 guava cheese. They all tasted better than Porto's pastries in my opinion. The cashier was very friendly and service was fast. They also have menudos (comes in 2 sizes). I am going to try that next time. The pastries at Navis are sooo delicious! So many different varieties its very difficult to choose. You just would want to get one if each. Also the Tamales.. SOOO AMAZING! Reminds me of the ones Mom makes. For me that I can't have spicy food its perfect (the chicken ones). There are others that are spicy and my family so approves of them so a little bit for each one. Straight up lazy and careless employees here. I say it like this because here you have such beautifully made breads in your displays, all to be ruined by a big FLY inside the displays, touching all the breads over and over again as we wait to be helped. I'm grateful that there was a customer ahead of us, for us to take notice of the fly. I say lazy 'cause how as an employee do you not see that big black thing flying all around, and be careless and not do a thing about it. Things like this make or break a small business like this one in time. Because let's be real! Your breads aren't on the cheaper side, which is no problem at all if the quality is up to par! It's definitely not quality when your food has been contaminated with flies and you continue to just sell it anyway. That's gross! Do better Navis! Navis bakery Had to check out this bakery that's being compared with Porto's. Bought some fresh fruit-topped cheesecake, mocha and cookies and cream cheesecakes. All three were good. We also bought chocolate conchitas (mini conchas), guava, mango, pineapple, and pineapple-coconut pastries, and choco-flan slice. The conchita was dry, i could hardly differentiate the guava and the mango fillings, all of them, sadly, tasted too sweet and artificial. The chocolate cake from the choco flan was dense and dry with a bitter aftertaste. They were selling tamales too but didn't buy any. Customer service was nice and friendly. Store was clean and welcoming. Parking was adequate. Another place checked off my list. On a side note, it's not fair to both places to be compared to each other, to one place more than the other. read more

I had heard several people commenting on this place being good and having Cuban pastries AND Mexican pastries AND tamales, three things I love! So I had to try it. I'm not a fan of Porto's and so when people compare anything else to that, anything else is better IMO haha! Stopped by around 530pm, there were still plenty of pastries available to choose from. The staff was friendly and greeted everyone as they came through the doors. There were a handful of people waiting to order with only two people serving but service was quick. Ordered some of the Cuban and Mexican pastries/ sweet bread and a couple chicken tamales (which were the only ones left). The pastries were good and the tamales had good flavor but were a bit dry. It was moist and not dry. I think I found another go to spot for chicken tamales. It was $3.25 per tamale or $35 per dozen. I also got the guava/cheese and pineapple/cheese pastry. I tried to give them a few chances because I have bought many tamales from them but unfortunately their tamales have been on the decline they have been coming out dry. This time I bought 1 dozen for Christmas gathering, thinking things might change because they have to be fresh...right?....No! The cheese tamales were hard and the cheese did not melt and was very chewy. My family did not finish them, the red ones were okay, there were some green ones that were dry and crumbly as well. They answered all questions regarding types of pastries. $15/dozen pastries $25/dozen muffins (did not get) 10/10 Cheese rolls - THESE RIVAL PORTOS! I would say the texture of the toasted shell covered with sugar crumbs is much better than portos, but the cheese at Portos is better. Not sure how to describe the difference in cheese taste, but it was still creamy and light. As far as alternatives to driving to Burbank for Portos, this is the spot. 8/10 Fruit Strudels - They have coconut, pineapple, and guava all with and without cheese. I got all combinations and the with cheese versions are always better! The fruit filling had good flavor in terms of actually tasting the fruit, but the pineapple and guava ones were a bit artificial. These get tiring much faster than the cheese rolls. 7/10 Sugar Balls - There were white and pink sugar dusted balls which was like a hard sugar shell wrapped around a dense cake interior. Cake was moist and semi sweet and shell was crunchy. Interesting try, pretty filling, would get other stuff. 10/10 Vanilla Custard Rolls - SO BOMB! You can sample the custard, but trust it was creamy, great consistency, not too sweet, and best cold. The roll is slightly smaller than the cheese roll, but the shell was hard, flaky, and almost like a cannoli but just full enclosed the custard. Must try! 7/10 Flan (forgot price) - Average flan, but still good. Good springy jello consistency, sweet caramel sauce, scent was amazing. read more
