I can't believe I've passed by this bakery so many times without realizing it was here. I finally stopped in to grab an assortment of pastries and an iced coffee, and I was pleasantly surprised. They were welcoming, friendly and patient while we looked and asked questions. I decided to get the ham Torta it was toasted good had good flavor. The chicharron was good not spicy. The red pork had a kick of spice and was very flavorful and soft. Tortillas freshly made and some good beans and rice. This review is for the delicious cakes and pan dulce they make! Growing up in Highland Park my family and I always went to that location but it has since closed. I now live near the San Gabriel one and El Pavo is now my go to place for cakes. I had to write down this review for the last cake and the exceptional service I received from their baker Juan . I gave them a picture of what I wanted and his artistry blew me away. My parents celebrated 55 years married and I wanted something equally as special. Coming from someone like myself who is very picky and detail oriented for parties they totally surpassed my expectations . All my family really enjoy their cakes /pan dulce and appreciate that they are not over the top sweet . Their location is always clean from what I can see and staff is very helpful when ordering . My husband and I finally stopped by this bakery I've been wanting to try for a while and it did not disappoint! We ordered the chile verde plate which came with beans, rice, and a simple lettuce and tomato salad on top served with warm corn tortillas. Assembling all of the ingredients into the tortillas was super tasty. The chile verde had the perfect level of spice and the meat was really tender. I actually ate mine when we got home and added a little crema from our fridge and it made it even better! I wasn't even able to take a picture because we just kind of dug in. The smell was so good I couldn't wait. And honestly the way it smelled matched exactly how good it tasted. We also picked up some pan dulces especially the ones with the sugar coating which were a perfect sweet touch after the meal. As I was driving, the store sign caught my eye and I u-turned back. So glad I did because the pastries did not disappoint! The concha was probably my favorite. I've tried many -- from El Super market to panaderias in Mexico City -- and the conchas they make are solid. My second favorite was definitely the polvorones. Love the tricolors so much. This place is bomb. They recently redone the outside advertisement, so looks like a good little shop now before I would call it a hole in the wall but now it's a business lol JK. And I'll truthfulness, this place is a solid bakery, and has some good burritos. I personally like the Carnitas or carne asada here. Are used to live coming on Wednesdays because they had five dollar burritos, turns out they raise the prices to seven. I guess they have to pay for all that fancy advertisement on the storefront. Andrew went above and beyond to rectify the issue and I was immediately impressed with the attention and respect given to me, the customer. I can't emphasize enough the level of respect given to me and furthermore, I totally accept the apology and will continue to support this Bakery which has served the community that I grew up in , Atwater Village. The staff here is super friendly and they charge $7 for a burrito on Wednesday. I've lived in the SGV most of my entire life but I've finally went in after driving by so many times. I then called in and spoke with a woman who was very rude and curt with me. I asked her some questions about placing an order ahead of time and she told me they don't accept phone orders. We always struggle in finding authentic sweet Mexican bread, but this spot definitely has a variety to share. There's a variety of bread as well as drinks and the service is always great. They really make you feel at home and it can get crowded on the weekends however we think the service and the bread is worth the weight. Definitely worth the visit. We drove by this place for a long time and never had the chance to go in and try it till recently. There is street parking right before the railroad tracks. They do not appear to have a lot, but if they do it must be in back. However, street parking is almost always available. The lady who works here was extremely nice to us. She recognized we were first time customers, asked us to confirm, and then explained all their pastries to us. We got a variety of pastries to eat all week. We do not know the names of them all, however, several were like empanadas, but filled with cream or jelly donut type filings, some were cookies, and others like donuts. None of them were extremely exceptional, but all of them were good. They were all not overly sweet, but just enough to enjoy it. We liked the cream filled empanada type pastries the best. Their bakery service style is similar to all the Asian bakeries in the area. You get a tongs and a tray and select which pastries you want from glass cabinets with doors. Then you go check out at the counter. One reviewer complained that they found metal in one pastry. We did not have that problem and we know that things like that happen to any business occasionally. Other reviewers complained that the service was not good or that the quality of the hot food has declined over the years. The lady who helped us was nicer than the man who took our money, but he was ok. We cannot speak to the hot food. When we went around 4-5 on a weekend and they were deserted. The store is a relatively small and does not have a place to eat inside, so plan to get your food to go. Overall, we would get pastries from here again and would recommend giving them a try. read more

This place used to have decent food. I just got home to eat after what was essentially the worst experience I've had here. They must have had a new guy who clearly wasn't trained. I had to beg to get more rice since he gave me like two spoonfuls worth. I felt like a Karen complaining even though it was totally justified. The other customers gave me looks of empathy as it was clear the staff had no clue how bad they were. An older gentlemen helped me translate since the worker spoke zero English. The new guy also didn't know about the salad that comes with the plate special, so the cashier had to tell him, and he produced what was the most pathetic salad with the worst proportions ever. 50% tomatoes and 50% lettuce. The lady told him lettuce, tomato, onions, and cilantro. Of course, that wasn't going to happen. Tried the food when I got home. Green Chile was ok, but the rice was hard and bland. Waste of money. Their pan dulce is ok, but I'm not going to make a special trip just for that. I can go to Super A down the street for the same quality bread. Won't be back, and I've been a customer off and on for like 30 years. I'm not one to write a bad review really, but this place has had more than enough time to shape things up--they're clearly going downhill, and raising prices in the process. read more

El Pavo is a solid Mexican bakery. I grew up going to the bakeries with my mom and picking up a bag of conchas. Over the years, I've become quite picky with my conchas, but I've found my local bakery to pick up my favorite Mexican bread. I noticed some empanadas stuffed with either pumpkin, pineapple, or guava so I picked up the pumpkin one and found it delicious! It tasted like a pumpkin pie, so I recommend it to pumpkin lovers. I originally came here to get a garden salad burrito because I used to come when I was a kid all the time. I remember the burritos being so flavorful but that wasn't the case this time. The gardener saw it was a little dry and lacked any flavor whatsoever. I remember when my burritos used to be scalding hot fresh almost even though they were sitting in the warmers. Not this time. My burrito was barely lukewarm and had a lot more beans than anything. All I can say is that it was just lackluster and not thrilling at all. El Pavo Bakery was a place I reminisced as the "bakery next to the railroad tracks" . It was were would go for my fix of mexican food. I remember the familiar waft of sweet fragrant bread. I remember the cheap, absolutely loaded burritos that struggled to fit in its thin tin foil wrapping. I loved it... I have gone back a few times within the past 2 years and to my dismay it is a far cry from the nostalgic bakery I grew up loving. During my first time back, I ordered a burrito with my parents. And while their food did not disappoint, their service was absolutely appalling! They would rush my parents and, quite evidently because of the language barrier, the lady wanted us to be through and out. She wore her emotions on her sleeve and made it very well known to us that she did not like our presence. I was disgusted and sad that people would lack the decency to treat others like humans especially in a food service job. A year and a half later, I dismissed the encounter as a one-off type of instance and gave this place another chance. But to be frank, their burritos are now in a condition where they are no longer edible... like extremely over salted meat and lackluster portions.
