What's not to like? Good coffee, free cinnamon rolls, and friendly service! I especially enjoyed the old local newspapers on the walls showing important events through history. It was like eating in a US history museum which was super cool! Food-wise the eggs, sausage and bacon were all solid. The hash browns in particular were phenomenal as they were the crispiest I've ever had without being dry, burned, or sitting on a mess of mushy mash in the middle. I tried to give this place one more chance after eating there many years ago and not liking it. We placed an order online, it said it would be ready at 1:30. My bf called me at 1:45 and said they didn't have our food, they mixed up orders with someone else's. And we could wait for the other people to realize it was wrong and wait for them to go back to the restaurant or they could remake it if we really wanted. Not even a sorry, refund, discount or nothing. I don't know what's happening to downtown Lees Summit's restaurants but they're sure going down the drain. It is worth the 40 min. Drive from warrensburg to eat here. The staff are great at they're jobs, personable,pleasant,attentive and great personalities. Neighborhood Cafe has risen from the ashes, so to speak, of Neighbor's Cafe, a downtown Lee's Summit staple that closed its doors in January. It's back, and looks much the same, but with a less crowded counter-register-front door area (the configuration and orientation of the counter has changed so that people paying, arriving, and waiting to be seated are not all sharing the same three square feet). The place has been cleaned and newly repainted, and it looks like at least some of the staff is the same. Unchanged, also, is the solid, greasy spoon, diner-type fare, and free warm cinnamon rolls that are presented before you order, the way other restaurants may do a bread basket. When checking out the new ownership on their second or third day, I was pleasantly surprised. I'd always enjoyed the previous restaurant in a "support the local diner" kinda way, but found the food to be hit or miss. I'm a big biscuits and gravy fan if I'm eating in a diner, for instance...it's the litmus test, for me, of a decent breakfast place. Previously, I found them to be passable, but bland. Now, however, they are well-seasoned and flavorful. The coffee is improved, as well, as is speed of service. It's nothing fancy or trendy or probably particularly healthy, but it definitely fills a niche. I'm told that the building has housed a neighborhood diner in some incarnation or another since 1950 in downtown Lee's Summit, and I'm thrilled that somebody picked up the reigns so quickly to keep the concept going. read more

Recently purchased and renamed by the new owners, this cafe has cleaned up a bit of it's interior since it was the now closed Neighbor's Cafe. The walls have had a fresh coat of paint and gone are the photos. A new addition is the flat screen TV over the cash register and counter in the front and the counter area was changed, for the better and the restaurant now accommodates traffic flow enter and leaving better than under the old owners. Also the restaurant is cleaner than it was in the past. The only thing that hasn't changed and the only reason I would recommend anyone got here to eat is the cinnamon rolls they bring you at the start of your meal. These are pretty darn good. As for our dinners' tonight, well they weren't very good. I had binner (breakfast as dinner) and ordered the three slices of French Toast and a side of bacon. I had coffee to drink. This cafe serves Farmer's Brothers, which is palatable, but not my favorite. The French Toast had something to be desired. I use to be a grill cook in an early part of my life, so I do know how to make French Toast on a grill. This was awful. The egg batter that so makes French Toast - French Toast was barely discernible. The middle of the toasts, where they were cut were very flattened. This was definitely not soggy French Toast. The bread did not taste very good. The butter was served in a plastic cup and was definitely prepared well in advance as there was some water separation at the very bottom of the cup. The syrup, also served in a larger plastic cup was warm. The bacon was OK, three slices make up their slide. I could have gotten an equivalent or better meal at a chain restaurant. My hubby had one of the specials - Salmon Patties with creamed peas and mashed potatoes served with a side salad. To give the folks at the Neighborhood Cafe some credit, the salad looked good and had more than iceburg lettuce. I tasted the Salmon Patties and they were a little heavy on the black pepper for my taste (and for my black pepper loving hubby) and could have used something like onion to jazz them up a bit. I saw a lot of dried parsley in the patties and they were awfully thin. I think of salmon patties being thicker, like crab cakes, the might have been a 1/4 inch thick. The cream sauce for the peas, which appeared to be can peas or very over cooked frozen peas, was a bit bland and almost tasted like a canned cream soup. We also had difficulty reading the specials board due to the glare on the board from the overhead florescent lighting near the cash register. I so wanted to this to be a good experience and it just missed the mark. read more

Two comments straight off the bat - 1) How can you not like a place that gives you dessert first (Yummy cinnamon roll), and 2) I have died and gone to chicken-fried steak heaven! I was wandering the back roads of MO, stretching my legs (TG for Google maps) and I ended up in Lee's Summit just in time for dinner. I pulled up Yelp on my BB and perused for a non-chain place to grab a bite to eat. My eyes fell upon the listing for Neighbor's Cafe and there I went. I sat down and the first thing they did was set a warm cinnamon roll in front me - I decided to just nibble and save the rest for dessert. Chicken-fried steak is a comfort food for me and they had a bunch to choose from (only they call it country-fried here). Country-fried steak sandwich, country-fried steak open face sandwich w/ mashed, country-fried steak dinner, and country-fried steak and eggs. I went for the open-faced w/ mashed potatoes. It was fantastic - just enough breading, homemade mashed and a slightly peppery gravy. I finished it all and almost licked the plate. It was just enough. Oh and I finished off the cinnamon roll and ordered 2 more for later. One last note - the folks running this place are great. Very friendly with out being annoying. The best word that I can think of to describe the people here is genuine. Makes me kind of homesick for the Midwest. read more

The only reason I can see the high ratings for this place is because it is one of the only breakfast options in LS. Food is bland and slow to the table. There is always confusion when you walk in.. Families file in, through the crowd, and all stand around waiting in the front to put their name in -- in the same line where people are piled up to pay. After putting in the name, the group files back out the door to wait outside. Why not just put someone outside to take names? The non-stop opening of the front door lets in heat and flies (or a cold chill in winter). Neither are helpful or appetizing, particularly when it takes an hour to get your food after ordering. We could have opted to drive to and from the grocery store and made a much tastier breakfast in less time than it took to get our food. I mean, seriously, how long do scrambled eggs take? Yeah, yeah, they serve cinnamon rolls and the walls are covered with kitschy memorabilia. Not nearly enough to override the slowness and chaos of the whole experience. read more

Severely overrated. One of those places that can only survive on the dead taste buds of senior citizens and loyal locals. The failing duct tape repair job on the vinyl booth benches added a nice charm, in addition to the irrelevant outdated sports memorabilia. However, the food is terrible, everything I tried at least. Yeah the cinnamon rolls, whatever. Isn't every stupid breakfast place "famous" for their cinnamon rolls? Give it a rest already. The biscuits and gravy are probably the worst I've ever had. Gravy was thin and watery completely lacking in seasoning and flavor. The biscuits were small and unremarkable. The hash browns were greasy, flimsy, and bland. Went with a friend Thursday night. Just a few customers that night . Took forever to get food. Our mashed potatoes were fresh out of the fridge cold. Friend's dish was incorrect. Brought my plate back first with warm mashed potatoes but this time broccoli & cheese side was cold. By the time I had finished my plate, they brought my friends corrected order. This place is a Lee's Summit legend. It's been around for YEARS - maybe a hundred, in fact - and has undergone so many ownership changes you would think it's a used romance novel. But one thing here stays the same - their COMPLIMENTARY cinnamon buns. That's right - COMPLIMENTARY warm homemade cinnamon buns. LOVE. This place is in the heart of downtown Lee's Summit and is a must-visit for out-of-towners. It's a standard townie hole-in-the-wall place, with a crappy screen door at its entrance, narrow hallway going in, and nothing but a check-out counter to greet you as you (typically) wait for seating. Though there are two semi-large rooms for seating, expect to wait during any given time of day during the weekend. This place is what I think of when I ponder Midwestern goodness: the "Regulars" who sit in the back corner, photos of local war heros and notable newspapers lining the walls, local advertisements on the table top, a large menu with tons of dinner and breakfast options, a nasty bathroom in the back, only accessible by going through the waitress prep-area, and AMAZING desserts and pies. AND it's all very affordable. There is something here for everyone - healthy, greasy, simple, decadent, meaty, veggie. I especially love their omelets with home-style hash browns followed by some pie. Though by the time I get to the pie, I usually have licked everyone else's plate of cinnamon bun frosting. OOOOOooohhh so good. My husband especially loves the (heart-attack educing) Country Fried Steak. One less star from perfect as we have had some less-than-par service from the waitstaff here in the past. I think I fell in love with this place. If you like a no fuss spot to grab a meal this is the place! When we sat and were greeted by our server we got a cinnamon roll. Who doesn't love a free cinnamon roll?!?! Forget bread and butter. I got the Country Breakfast and was a fan of the serving size for the prize. The gravy for the biscuits and gravy was delicious. Nice and peppery but not too salty. The way I like it! I finished off my breakfast with a slice of cherry pie. The crust was flaky and buttery. Couldn't have asked for more. The filling was light on the cherries, but tasty. We got greeted, seated and had our order taken promptly, but it took almost 20 minutes for the food to come out. We stayed with friends in Lee's Summit during our cross-country trek and decided on Neighbor's Cafe based on our friends recommendation. Great little greasy spoon breakfast joint in a very cute small town. What makes this place unique is the tasty cinnamon rolls that they serve even before your meal comes! Food was okay but nothing more exciting than any chain restaurant but I just sleep better at night knowing that a small family owned restaurant is getting my loot instead. Good news for the health conscious: I am a very healthy eater and they were happy to accommodate my request for tomatoes instead of potatoes and also egg whites for my omelet (extra star for that!) read more

Food is fine, service is slow and bad. Last time I came here our waitress had no idea what she was doing, she just seemed to be wandering aimlessly at times. Had to ask multiple times for drinks and took over 45 minutes for our food to come out, at that point I have had enough and just told them to cancel my order (the first time I have EVER done that). Oh lordy, you have to come here for the cinnamon rolls alone. Good golly! They're complementary, freshly baked, and deliciously melt in your mouth. I'm a big fan :-) Their breakfast is delicious. I've never had a thing I didn't like. NC's homemade pies are also quite tasty and fresh. I've had the apple crumble type and french silk, both highly recommended! The history of ol' Lee's Summit breakfast nooks lives on. Like the Wheel-Inn Drive In in Sedalia, these historical places just can't die. If you are an avid reader of breakfast yelp pages of southwest kansas city, you'll remember the old Neighbor's Cafe (http://www.yelp.com/biz/neighbors-cafe-lees-summit), which most folks still call this place Neighbor's, but that's another story. The good thing is, the new owner's didn't change anything about the menu, and it seems like most of the wait staff (and I guess cooks) are still around. All I really cared about were the cinnamon rolls. And the biscuts and gravy. Thankfully they are both there. That, along with the louisiana hot sauce keeps me coming back. Oh, and there are of course the neighbors. I don't really live in Lee's Summit, but if I ever wanted to know anything about the place, I'd just go down there most any morning and check out the round table the back room, and if there are any senior-looking folks sitting around drinking coffee, they'd probably know a thing or two about the place, or Lee's Summit in general. Last note, I want to give props for the long tables, where sometimes you have to sit next to folks you don't know, but then you just might end up saying hi or something, maybe pass the apple jelly or something, and that's kind of cool, I think. read more

Any restaurant that starts your dining experience by placing a big plate of homemade cinnamon rolls on the table is already on my "want to like" list. My sister and I ate there last Saturday afternoon and went straight for the cold weather comfort food: chili and ham & beans respectively. Both came with a sizable corn muffin. Neighborhood Cafe is still packing 'em in out in Lee's Summit. Sissy and her husband met Hubby and me for breakfast at 10 this morning and it was nearly a full house. We found a booth that was just being cleared and settled down with the menu. It's been a while since we were last there and the current owners have made some changes, including laminated menus and lots of breakfast choices. The signature of Neighborhood Cafe has always been the complimentary, full-sized cinnamon rolls delivered to the table first thing before they even take your order. They are always good and today's were extra cinnamony and very tasty. Sis & her Hubby ordered Biscuits and Gravy with hashbrowns and a side of bacon; my Hubby got a Breakfast Burrito and I ordered a Chicken Tender and Bacon sandwich on a biscuit, served with pickle chips and a side of savory mustard. Sis and both our Hubbys finished their breakfasts and commented on how good everything tasted. My sandwich was worth writing a new review! The (2) chicken tenders were lightly breaded, crispy, juicy and so big they looked like full chicken breast halves minus the bones. One generous sized biscuit was split in half and had crisp bacon pieces topping each half and then crowned with one of the tenders. I ate half of everything and requested a to-go box for the rest. Service is always friendly and efficient. The Neighborhood Cafe has given us a lot of years of good eats. Given that it is an authentic neighborhood diner with solid credentials and no pretensions, it suits my tastes well enough to qualify for five stars in my book. read more

While it is still a good value for the money, service has dropped off and quality has slipped. Friend and I had dinner there last night instead of hitting Habaneros on 50 hiway. What a mistake! Each of us ordered chicken fried chicken. When it showed up, it looked ok. But... - my chicken was chicken fried steak. - both our mashed potatoes were cold. Not just warm. Not even room temp. Cold and firm, fresh from the walk-in. - the broccoli and cheese was in a small dish, drowning in greasy water. Nacho cheese sauce clung to the over cooked broccoli. After about 15 more mins, when my friend was about done eating, my chicken showed up. To be fair, it was good, not great. You'd have thought maybe they'd comp some pie, or come out with some extra cinnamon rolls. Or even just knock a few bucks off the tab. Nothing. Zero. Zilch. Nada. I'd have preferred a qtr pounder, fries, and keeping the other $10. Never again. read more

As I was excited to take my daughter there, I was greeted at the door by what appeared to be a manager quickly deferring us from dining there because it was 2:45 and they closed at 3:00.
