When I called to inquire about services and costs, I reached someone saying his name was "Xavier," who was evasive concerning my questions. When I asked to speak with his manager, he refused, saying, "You don't need to talk to a manager." His attitude was like the customer is here for the convenience of Nelson's HVAC, not vice versa. When I tried to narrow down an appointment time to earlier in the morning, he said he didn't want the business. I then replied that his attitude was a "bad business model" and that I would truthfully review my experience for others to read. Recommendation: STEER CLEAR of Nelson's HVAC. read more

My old heat pump failed during the summer when I had family guests and the temp was 90 degrees, so we needed someone quickly. I had used Nelson HVAC before, so I called them and they came the same day. The showed me the leak in the equipment and recommended a replacement. Because several of the house units had had similar problems, I realized that the equipment had reached it's life expectancy, so I agreed with the replacement. They priced 2 Carrier equipment; a normal one with only one speed and an efficient one with multi-speed that cost $2K more. I decided for the multi-speed and after having it for 6 months, I can provide some feedback. The new equipment is energy efficient and also multi-speed; it starts running at the lowest speed and only increases it if needed, which is rare. This is very different than the regular heat pumps that are either on or off, that means, zero or 100% and when on, they blast arctic air that sometimes makes the house uncomfortable. At the lowest speed, the flow of air lasts much longer and it's not as strong, so you feel more comfortable. The multi-speed was $2K more expensive, but the savings in electricity and the comfort makes the additional cost worth it. The price I paid was exactly what they quoted, including the discounts. read more

They were fast, did impeccable work, were technically superior in sizing the equipment to our house, and gave a very reasonable price compared to other quotes we received. I was in desperate need of help when on Tuesday of this week, my office AC stopped working. He did his best to get to me as quickly as possible even though the phones in his office were ringing off the hook. The temperatures were over 90 degrees and being without AC was pretty oppressive. What terrible service!! We had a technician come out to get a quote. The technician was nice but tried to oversell us on everything. Shortly thereafter we received a quote from their office. We asked for an estimate to install a new HVAC unit. However, we could not get a line item charge for any of the parts. We recently had a new thermostat and furnace installed six months ago. The person that gave us a quote from their office said they were not usable. That was not true. The other companies looked at the project and said that the equipment was compatible. After mentioning this, the person in Nelsons' office became irate. Furthermore, he was upset that we obtained quotes from other companies. Because the weather was hot we were going to be gouged. My family has trusted Nelson with all our HVAC needs for over 20-years. He is honest, reliable and most of all very professional. I trust his recommendations and work ethics. The last big job Nelson did for us was this past August. The downstairs A/C unit stopped working during the high heat wave. I called Nelson and he was able to come the next morning. After his careful inspection, he recommended to replace the unit. He provided a detail explanation as to why the old until could not be fixed and provided an estimate for a new unit. The estimate was extremely reasonable, and the new unit had great reviews. I was very pleased with the explanation and the cost. So, I signed the quote and he started the work. He was able to install the unit the next day. The job was completed from initial assessment to completion in two days. The final cost was exactly as the estimate. Not one penny more. Last evening our Gas furnace stopped running. This morning our home's temperature was down to 59 degrees. At 7:45, I called Nelson. He said he would have someone here by noon. Instead, he had a tech here at 10:15 am to diagnose and repair the unit. Fortunately, it was a quick fix and I escaped with only the basic service call charge. Their work is poor and they don't stand by their work - every time we contact Nelson's HVAC on the multiple problem related to the unit installed, they spend a lot of time explaining why it's not their fault and refuse to make things right. We have other service companies verify that the original Nelson installation was faulty for numerous reasons and have incurred significant additional costs as a result, but Nelson's refuses to stand by their work. In addition, be wary of recommendations by the company - for example, they tried to convince us that we needed a very expensive type of hot water heater to install given the alleged space constraints. But we got a second opinion, and we were very much able to fit in a standard water heater that fit fine and works fine. Nelson also did the same about the thermostat for the unit he installed (similar to Tito P's review) -- almost demanding we pay for an expensive one he recommended. read more

This summer our HVAC died suddenly, though not unexpectedly (it was 26 years old). Searched Falls Church HVAC and Nelson's was the first to come up with a 4 star rating or better. Service was awesome start to finish. Their front desk woman was polite, friendly, and got us schedule within 2 days. Nelson and Neil then gave us many different unit/system options - no pressure to buy the most expensive one either. Best of all they did the tear-out and install in a single day. Nelson has been great in the past. He even had installed AC on 2 of our properties and has been inspecting our properties for past 8-10 years. Lately, his price has gone up the roof. Had him stop by to check out our AC and he mentioned that it would cost us $250 for the new thermostat and $87 for labor. He insisted that he use his thermostat (Honeywell) and would not use a thermostat that we had purchased. He was charging us $250 for the thermostat that costs less than $50 plus labor. Paid him the $87 for the visit and asked him not to change the thermostat. Contacted another HVAC company and they stopped by to replace the thermostat and they mentioned that the thermostat was working fine and just needed the battery replaced. We ended up replacing the thermostat since we had purchased it. The cost of thermostat, labor and yearly contract from our new HVAC was less then Nelson's cost of "thermostat." read more

Nelson's is great! My upstairs AC/heat pump had already died and another cold winter was on the way. Nelson came over and did a thorough and fair estimate on the properly sized replacement unit. (Another company had come over and quoted the wrong size to make it cheaper for them, but it would not have been enough.) Nelson told me that today's new units require an expensive, digital gauge that most companies do not have, even though they have taken the classes which tell them it's required. Today's greater efficiency ratings can't be achieved without using this digital gauge. Nelson's spent the $2000 for this instrument (I have seen it) and did things right. They did everything that was needed properly and in one day. The AC/heat pump has been working fine ever since. No tricks, no guesses - it's right when they do the job. We could not have been more pleased by the service we received from Nelson and his son, Neil. We contacted them on a Friday in August, when our a/c suddenly quit. They went out of their way to get to our place to diagnose the problem, which, unfortunately turned out to be that our 25 year-old compressor had failed terminally, and new compressor and evaporation coil units would be required. We negotiated a deal for the replacement equipment which seemed to us to be fair, and they moved quickly on the Saturday morning to acquire all the necessary replacement equipment. Then, following the completion of another job late Saturday night, they began our job early on Sunday morning, worked nonstop the whole day, and heroically completed the installation by 10:30 PM Sunday night. They worked with great professionalism, respecting all environmental regulations, skillfully assessing and adjusting all the new pieces to fit to the old pieces in the HVAC system. Nelson and Neil clearly are trying to grow their currently small family business by being honest, accountable and efficient. Not only that, they are both very pleasant, polite, and engaging people, respectful of the client and of the client's premises. It is hard to imagine a better process and outcome than what we experienced with Nelson's HVAC. read more
