I seriously wondered how they were making a profit given the decent unlimited sushi I was getting at such an affordable price. Well my hunch was correct - they clearly were not making money. When I went again, I was shocked to find the price to be $18 for dinner. While this is not absurd, this was also not what I was expecting. Unfortunately, the unexpected price increased colored my taste buds and they did not activate as usual. Thus, food tasted much worse even though I got my usual fare - tons of salmon/avocado sushi, a giant bowl of machine outputted miso soup, chicken wings, teriyaki steak, and spring rolls. Should I blame rockin rolls for market forces that are out of their control? Of course not, that would not be fair. I think 3 stars is fair for the current food at its current price point. Previously, would have given this place 5 stars without a doubt. But if I am paying $18, I might as well pay slightly more and go to Mr. Tokyo, which has better sushi for a few bucks more. read more

Went for the AYCE lunch, & while $15 seems like a good deal, the food quality wasn't worth it. No servers or menus, and the sushi on the conveyor belt looked and tasted like it had been sitting out forever, and the edamame from the buffet was terrible unfortunately. Such a cool concept that you don't see every day! I live in Raleigh, but I heard about this place and heard good things so I was eager to try it out, plus I love sushi and anything that's all-you-can-eat. With that being said, I'm also very realistic about all-you-can-eat dining experiences. I don't expect high-end and the best of anything from a buffet or all-you-can-eat place, especially something like sushi. I was actually pleasantly surprised by the quality and options. This location is in a strip-mall/shopping center with other businesses and restaurants, but a shared private parking lot not far from downtown Durham. When you enter in you pay before sitting down. The price is around $11, but remember it's all-you-can-eat so that's great! Once you pay, you're given a seat number and go to your table. Everything is labeled well so there's no confusion about where to go. There's a corner in the restaurant that you can get your drinks as well as condiments (spicy mayo, eel sauce, soy sauce, ginger, wasabi), miso soup, seaweed, imitation crab, edamame, desserts, etc. You definitely get a lot for your money. Most sushi restaurants charge for a side of spicy mayo or eel sauce. We grabbed a bunch of all of the things we wanted and then sat at our table to begin our dining experience. There is not a bad seat in the house! Each table has the same access to everything. We went around 5 on a Wednesday afternoon so it wasn't really busy. Of course, you'd probably want to sit closer to where the sushi comes out to get first dibs, but they do a good job of keeping it coming. There's all sorts of options to choose from. Of course your basic rolls, but there's speciality rolls as well that I was surprised to see. There were spring rolls and dumplings and even a dessert roll with bananas as well. We left so stuffed, but I was pleased. The way the conveyor belt is designed makes it pretty sanitary as well. You have to open the window at your table to grab your food and the speed is at a pretty good speed to ensure you have enough time to grab what you want, but not too much time to linger and possibly spread germs to other plates around your choice. You get what you pay for...literally. I stopped in for dinner on a Tuesday night and the place was empty. 1 of 2 conveyor belts were running. If it's your first time here, you pay up front $10-12, you're given a tray, cup, and seat assignment number. Once you find your seat, you can help yourself go the drink machines, condiments, and side items. It reminded me of a bad day at a AYCE Chinese buffet. Everything looked as if it's been sitting around all day which was not a good start to the meal. The first round or two was not bad then everything just starts to taste bland. There were no more than 5-6 different sushi rolls with a few side items like cream cheese wontons and potstickers. I started to feel sick so I decided to stop eating. Interesting concept, good for the experience but I personally wouldn't go back. The sushi rolls tasted like what you would find at Chinese buffet sushi bar...cold, hard, and flavorless. Tl;dr: Great value for AYCE, quality is par-for-the-course regarding price, easy dining in a clean environment. I love sushi and I love all-you-can-eat value deals. Unfortunately, when you combine both of those loves, quality decreases to match the demand. I knew this going in so I was not surprised. The sushi options were great because we were one of the first customers of the day for lunch and the belt was packed with all of their rolls. The crunchy rolls were fresh and crispy, and the nigiri was soft and tender. On the ipad, you had options of order hot appetizers and rice bowls. We did not do any of those options and opted for just the rolls on the belt. The big disappointment was the miso soup. It came from a machine (powdered instant miso and dashi with hot water on demand) of a brand I'm familiar with so I was expecting that same flavor profile, however it was watery and only had an essence of miso flavor. Honestly if there was more dashi broth it would have been one saving grace. The toppings bar included green onions and tofu which was nice to get as much as you want! I also got a side of spicy krab salad to nibble on which was fine and not spicy. They also had a sauce bar with spicy miso, eel sauce, and a few others that I did not try. I've been to many conveyor belt sushi restaurants before and even to a few in japan and this place just doesn't do the concept justice. First off, the hostess was not at all friendly. We came in at 1:30pm on a Saturday for lunch. She told us that a booth wasn't available for 10-15 mins. We waited about 15 mins. Then when our beeper goes off she hands us our table number and low and behold when we walk in about 10 booths were available. Yeah... exactly... wth were we waiting for? Plus this hostess, has no idea about the concept of friendly customer service. No smile, no hello and no thank you. Big thumbs down. We tipped when we paid but I recommend you don't. She doesn't do anything for you, doesn't even show you to your seat, you serve yourself everything and have to clean up everything after you're done too. Then there's the food which was simply mediocre. The only thing worth eating was the tuna nigiri, gyoza and salmon nigiri. Even then, some of the tuna looked super low quality and pale in color. Everything else was just meh. Oh and there's gyoza sauce at the sauce station though they misspelled the label as Gayoza sauce. The plastic drink cups, plastic utensils, cheap chopsticks, plastic soy sauce saucers, watered down miso water (yeah I would not call that soup), get everything yourself and the clean up after yourself concept did not vibe with me. Oh and what kind of sushi restaurant doesn't have hot green tea?! Absolutely unheard of. Would I go back? Nope. Would I recommend it? We arrived on a Saturday evening around 5. We knew it would get crowded so we tried to get there for an early dinner. Since we were a party of 5 we had about a 15 min wait for one of the larger booths. I will start out by saying that this is not the type of sushi restaurant you want to go to regularly for sushi. It's more of a novelty that visiting relatives and friends will enjoy. Everything served on the assembly line was super fresh. There weren't a ton of choices of rolls but those offered were tasty. I say "tasty" and that is the equivalent of grocery store sushi. Adequate may be a better word. They also had crab Rangoon and a beef dumpling that were both good. We will maybe be back if we have more guests visiting but for my sushi I would prefer a place that I know has bigger and more robust sushi rolls. read more

I really like going to Rockin' Roll s Sushi. I mean, you can't beat the price, so it is really, really reasonable. Yes, you can get fresh sushi at the Hibachi places, but this quality is so much better. Every time I go, it is always crowded, but it is worth the wait. The food comes around on a conveyor belt, so you just grab whatever flavor you want as it comes around. There are different color plates, but I don't know if there is any significance to the plate color. If there is, I would love to know. I've been meaning to try Rockin Roll Sushi Express but I was a bit hesitant as more people wrote reviews on yelp. I wanted to give it a try anyways so I went this weekend and I was not disappointed! We went in for an early dinner around 4pm because we didn't want to go when it was very busy, especially since it was a Saturday. We paid at the front and then we we were given a table number to sit ourselves. (I thought it was quite odd to tip before you even sat down.) Sushi on conveyor belt was super cool! Each nigiri and roll had sign with a name, photo and ingredients listed. Volcano roll, eel roll, and spicy tuna roll were a few of my favorites. I really liked the fact that you don't have to wait to get more sushi. You just pick up whatever you want whenever you want! The only down side is that for some popular rolls, you have to wait until there are more available. Compared to other AYCE sushi I've been to, it was much cheaper. I'm pretty happy with my experience and I plan to go back. It is indeed an all-you-can-eat sushi conveyor belt. I think other reviewers are right. It's basically grocery store sushi, but that's okay! There's a Kroger grocery store in this same parking lot that sells sushi and it would be $10 for 3 salmon and 3 tuna nigiri that are not much different from here. But this one for like $13 is all you can eat. In general the rolls are much better than the nigiri. The nigiri rice falls apart with chopsticks, which is a shame. You have to use your hands. That's not a deal-breaker. It's still okay and quite nice. And there's some other fried items on the conveyor (and also dessert items that nobody takes) that are a nice break. I was very wary of the miso soup out of a machine at first, but after you let it settle for a bit, it is very nice! Almost use it like a tea! "Unlimited medium-quality sushi for a good price" I came on a Saturday at 5:30pm, and while there was a waitlist already for the booths, there were some single-seats left, so I was able to get in right away. Sushi plates glide by the tables on a conveyor belt (prefaced by a card saying what's about to come), and it's all-you-can-eat for only $10.99 plus tax and tip. One pays as they enter. I find this practice fine for a buffet-style place except that it seems weird to decide a gratuity when literally having never entered the establishment before that moment. Setting: It was definitely loud and a bit dark but clean. I initially found it somewhat stressful given the pressure to decide immediately if you want that one plate of sushi going by on the conveyor now or to wait. This was especially true if it's a type that went by before but all portions of it were taken by earlier tables (this happened to me a few times). However, as I sat, I saw that they repeated pretty frequently, so it's fine to just wait and watch for a while, and whatever you want will eventually be there for you. Service: I'm surprised people said the service was good. Literally no employee ever spoke to me after I paid and entered, and the staff at the entrance were fine but not warm. One gets their own plasticware or chopsticks, pours their own drinks, throws away their own trash, put away their dirty dishes, etc. Food quantity: A+ on that-- it's all you can eat! I think I had 7-8 little plates of sushi of different types. There was also a little bar on the side with miso soup from a machine, soy sauce, ginger, and various sides (e.g., seaweed salad, egg (I think), grapes) -- see photo for part of it. Food quality: Not A+. On the negative, the miso soup must have been the worst I've ever tasted-- not sure if they mixed it up from a powder or what. I could not eat/ drink it. The crab in the sushi was almost certainly the fake-fish kind ("krab"), such that the spicy crab sushi tasted like lame seafood salad. But on the positive, the other rolls were OK to good-- the volcano one had a pretty good texture and taste, for example. The salmon was OK. And all of it was clearly fresh-- nothing looked old, and I'm fairly certain dishes were not allowed to circulate for more than a time or two. One other reviewer commented negatively that the fish on the sushi was "warm"-- that was absolutely not true when I went. Basically, one should come in with expectation of this being about like sushi from Kroger rather than from a sushi restaurant. I do agree with other reviewers that the sushi seemed to fall apart more easily than at other places-- not sure if they used a different kind of rice of different way of preparing. But no problem-- just pick it up and eat it. Sushi selection: Not huge, but not terrible. The basic sushis you'd expect to see at the grocery store and several others were there. The basic shrimp, salmon, eel, or tuna atop rice went by. Volcano rolls, california rolls, vegetarian rolls, philly rolls, Alaska rolls, etc., also went by. Value: This is where the rubber hits the road. I used the comparison to Kroger earlier. If I'd gotten the same volume of Kroger sushi, I'd have paid more. And I would not have been able to have had the same selection of specific different kinds. So, I'd say the value is quite high. Speed: This is a place you can go in and out of FAST, given the format. It's even faster than a buffet since there's no line (except to get utensils and soy sauce)... the food just comes to you. Synopsis: Come with appropriate expectations. It's medium-quality sushi, but all-you-can-eat. If you're a sushi aficionado, just go elsewhere (Sushi Love is just down Lasalle from there.) I accidentally dropped some sushi on the belt (SUPER MY BAD) but I was amazed by how quickly it was cleaned up. It was as if nothing was dropped to begin with. It was a nice flow and great visually. They also have miso soup on the side. You just have to press a button! There's lots of sides you can get that are located in the corner of the restaurant. The food was mediocre, but who can complain with this deal! 10.99 for ALL YOU CAN EAT SUSHI?? Why the heck not! As a self proclaimed foodie hunter, Rockin Rolls Sushi Express has to be on my top 10 worst restaurants list. The amount you pay here is definitely not worth the quality of food that is provided. The cleanliness and spaciousness of the establishment is great, no quarrel. The food on the other hand... The conveyor belt spews all sorts of nasty plates - fish that lacks any flavor, has lost all of its freshness and texture, rice that is mushy and bland, overly fried tempura, rolls drowned in mayo sauce and other sauce monstrosities, and desserts that taste like they were shipped from China 300 years ago. Although it is an all you can eat, I could not bear to bring myself to eat more than 3-4 mini plates - the food made my stomach hurt and my palate suffer. If you are looking for a good sushi place, there are plenty of other options that are available for you where your buck is worth the food. I love this place so much, because the staff are friendly, the food is excellent, and I never feel like I'm being crowded by other patrons. For the record, I'm blind, and staff members give the correct assistance. I don't get grabbed, my cane isn't handled, either, I receive help with ordering from the iPad, since I haven't tried it with VoiceOver to see if whatever software they're using is accessible yet, they help me with the system you pay with, and it's just a great time. We wanted to eat here for fun and try it out, since we have been to other local AYCE sushi spots in Chapel Hill and Raleigh. It was interesting and not quite as good quality as some of the other places around town. You could see it in the rice, the spicy tuna/salmon mix, the actual hand rolled maki technique and more. I wish the belt were running! I thought that was a COVID measure, but it looks from other reviews that it was just down (and has been down for awhile). I like stacking the plates up high from conveyor belt sushi and we really did try a lot of different rolls and side items. Everything was okay and there were some yummy items that we ordered for sure. The desserts are kind of sad also- they are basically those little square cakes you get at Chinese buffets... I also didn't realize there was miso soup available?! I am just seeing that in previous reviews. All condiments were given to you in separate little containers at the check-in register where you pay before sitting down. Drinks are also not included in the price. Overall it's a little cheaper than other similar spots around town, so that's nice and a draw. However, I think I'll be more likely to head to those spots. read more

Y'all, this place is a GREAT bang for your buck if you like sushi. We waited about 15 minutes for a table on Wednesday night, partly because there was some sort of event that night and lots of high schoolers dressed up to eat dinner here before the event. We paid at the front counter and then picked up our drinks, seaweed salad and pickled vegetables, and soy sauce from the corner bar area. Dessert options included a few cakes which were quite dry. And I tried to dispense miso soup from the soup machine but all I got was hot water... After bringing our drinks to the table, we didn't have to get up again until after the meal. The conveyor belt sushi provided endless entertainment for my baby, who loved watching plates of food pass by, and tried to unsuccessfully grab plates of sushi. Her efforts were thwarted by the sliding plastic panes blocking her little hands. Each type of sushi roll is preceded by a sign stating the name and ingredients of the roll. Our favorites were the Dynamite Roll, Richmond roll. Other rolls included Las Vegas roll, tuna sashimi, salmon sashimi, seaweed salad roll, tofu skin roll, veggie roll, California roll, shrimp tempura roll, and many more. So, this place is the Fast food version of sushi. It's pretty cool that the sushi comes around on the conveyor belt, pretty good novelty. This is not high-end sushi that other places around Raleigh are known for. Better than grocery store sushi definitely. The ingredients seemed pretty fresh everything tasted fairly good. But it's pretty basic. The appetizers and hibachi entrées are included in the price, and our table ordered some and they came out very promptly and were good! Seaweed salad, are also included and pretty fresh as well. I definitely would recommend this place to anyone who is in a hurry, likes the taste of sushi and hibachi. Food: 3.5 Service: 3 Ambience: 4 Date/Time: 10/29/2017 1:30pm Order: A ton of sushi! Crowd: 1/2 full This is definitely a unique concept in buffet dining, although not unique in Japan, at least when I was there. I've always viewed it more as pigs at a trough :-) As you can see by the pictures, it's set up with the kitchen all the way to the back, and then 2 covered conveyor belts coming from each end of the kitchen straight out to the dining area. Along the conveyor belt, starting at the kitchen, are booths on either side of each belt, then a bar table on the ends with individual chairs sitting next to each other. The belt runs down one side and back up the other. The kitchen staff are constantly making and loading the various types of sushi onto the belt, filling in each section with the labeled sushi type on a small plate. As the type you want comes your way, you slide open the door and grab a dish. Before you start, you'll want to go to the front corner of the restaurant and grab your utensils/chopsticks, sauces, wasabi, drinks, etc and then come back and hunker up to the trough and dig in! I'd suggest choosing a chair at the end of the belt so you can easily waddle back out of the restaurant once you've stuffed yourself! There really is no individualized service here as it's all purely self serve, including cleaning up after yourself. However, the place did seem fairly clean and well stocked, and the cashiers seemed efficient. Other than that, you never interact with them at all. And strangely, they request a tip at the time you enter and pay, before you even experience the restaurant. Hopefully they pay their staff standard pay rather than waitstaff pay! The food is tasty but definitely far from fresh that you'll find at a full service restaurant, but then again, you'd pay double to get that freshness. I'd probably rate the freshness at about the equivalent of what you'd get at a grocery store serving it at the deli, or maybe even off an Asian buffet. The Las Vegas and Volcano sushi were 2 served hot that stood out, along with the Dynamite, and the Shrimp one. The others were good but nothing that really stood out. For looks, the top one was the strange pink one I've never seen before... can't remember the name of it. Had to try just to say I did... it didn't hit me either way. One tip is to either sit at the bar table or in the booths on the side of each belt that runs away from the kitchen, however you don't seem to get a choice other than "booth or bar", so if the restaurant is full, you may want to go for the bar. The reason.... everyone grabs the popular stuff at the start of the belt and it's gone by the time it gets around to the booths on the other side. Oh, and don't sit next to the belt if you get a booth as you'll be the one grabbing the sushi for you and the person next to you! Meh. If you're crazy hungry then sure, try it out. Otherwise I would give this a pass. Overall, sushi was not bad. I didn't try sashimi as it looked like very poor quality fish. But the cooked options were good. About 4 or 5 decent rolls that pass by. Wasabi/ginger, sides, miso soup, drinks, desserts and other sauces are all self service. The area is cramped and also very poorly maintained. There's a cart that has buffet style dessert (2 options) and also includes seaweed salad and then the toppings for the miso soup. It was weird to have it all on the same cart and very messy. You can also order (via tablet at table) some hibachi and appetizers. We tried the crab Rangoon, shrimp tempura and chicken wings. All were very greasy, over cooked and stale tasting. Chicken wings had more breading then chicken on them and very salty. Total for 2 people was almost $50. read more

While this is not the best sushi I have ever had, it is adequate and inexpensive for what it is. The conveyor belt did seem to take awhile to show selections I would be interested in, but those selections did come around every once in awhile. Can I get better sushi at the grocery store? Three stars may seem bad but I'm saying it's average! I've been here a few times and you get exactly what is advertised. Unlimited sushi for a very good price. Of course, the sushi is not the best quality but you can't ask for quality sushi at an all-you-can-eat sushi buffet, especially with their prices. With that being said, I'm not a type of person who can devour a ton of food in one seating so I generally shy away from buffets in general. If you're more into quantity and eat your money's worth, this place is great! If you're worried about sitting towards the end of the conveyor belt and not getting certain sushi, no worries! I love sushi sooo much but Sometimes it can be way too pricey, especially if you're paying for more than one. This place satisfies your sushi craving and it comes in a cool way. It's a glass screen next to your booths and has a conveyer belt that moves the sushi across The entire restaurant. As you see a sushi for appetizers or food that interests you, you can open the little window next to your seat, and pick up that plate from the conveyor belt. It's a very unique experience and I'd highly recommend it. You also don't have to wait like other restaurants, your food is already ready and freshly made and put on the belt. Ok, so here is the deal from a non-sushi expert: It's 10 bucks. Of course, you're not going to get all you can eat high quality sushi for 10 bucks, but it's very reasonable. You walk in, there may or may not be a line. I went once and had to wait 30min and went the next time and waltzed right in. Other reviewers probably have pointed out which days both conveyor belts are running (there are two). I like the little salad bar and self serve station with ginger & the "Wasabi like stuff". The employees keep it clean. Once seated, you open a little window to snag sushi as it goes by you on little plates. There's an ID card which tells you what is available. There are spring rolls and rangoon thingies and sushi rolls going by. There are generally 7 or 8 types of sushi. The sushi is basically about the quality level you'd get at Food Lion, but hey there's a lot of it, so if you want quantity this is your place. As you stuff your face, you stack the little plates up on your table like a trophy. Once you've had your fill, you take all of your plates and trash to the front to dispose of and leave the establishment, wondering why you ate so much as you loosen your belt a notch. read more
