Nut allergy warning: Some dishes may have nuts, everything I ordered came out fine after we informed the staff. We came as a party of 3 and were seated with no issues on a Wednesday around 7:30PM. Finally, there was no line! But this was dinner, not dim sum. Order-to-Food Time: 13 Minutes for the Rice Noodles 19 minutes for the Squid Up to 35 minutes for the dim sum dishes (I think our pork buns got mostly forgotten). For three people, we ordered two dishes and three dim sum dishes. TL;DR: the dim sum dishes are ok, the others are pretty good. Stir Fried Rice Noodle with Beef: 4/5. Very sharable but not as much beef as I'd like. Salt & Pepper Squid: 4.5/5. Great portions, very tasty. A little stringy. Pork Buns: 3/5. Served as 3, not much meat inside but good flavor of Chinese barbecue. Szechuan Wontons: 3.5/5. For some reason these felt a little bland. Kind of pricey for only 5. Steam Pork: 2.5/5. Cleanest dim sum restaurant that I've been to, especially for one that offers cart service. Very busy on weekends, especially around brunch time. I'd recommend sending someone in your party to hold a spot in line before everyone else arrives (whole party has to be present to be seated). Lots of parking in front of the restaurant and in another lot to the side of the building. Very large menu with lots of dim sum options, but the shrimp in every dish was really overcooked and rubbery. Beef was also a little chewy but not bad for this type of restaurant. read more

Alright, so we've been to the original New Fortune and had them cater our wedding reception, so we're very familiar with the quality of food they used to put out. We wanted to try out the second version to see if it was good. From what we've heard, the owners of NF2 are different from the original owners of NF. We went here on a Friday evening and tried some of their dim sum dishes. Okay, so their dim sum dishes are very much average. They weren't bad, but they definitely weren't good either. For the price we paid, we felt ripped off. They cater to a mostly non-Asian audience, and the quality of their food reflects that. I can't imagine their dedicated Saturday brunch dim sum menu to be any better than what we had that night. We also ordered their Chinese broccoli and Walnut & Shrimp. The broccoli was fine, and the flavor and texture met our expectations. Their walnuts and Shrimp, however, tasted as if they added lemon to their cream sauce, which is disgusting. We couldn't figure out if maybe a cook had accidentally added the lemon into the sauce or if that was just how they made their dish. The sauce is supposed to be slightly sweet, but the lemon just threw the flavor off. It was so bad that we didn't finish it. The restaurant's interior is beautiful, but the lighting was a weird green that didn't match the decorative walls. The service was quick, and we were frequently offered refills on our waters throughout the evening. It's lunch service on a beautiful Saturday, and you're with a party of three. After driving 45 mins across town for New Fortune 2.0, you walk in, as there aren't reservations permitted at New Fortune 2. You expect a wait time of at least 30 mins, but instead, your party is immediately seated. New Fortune 1.0 was my all time favorite dim-sum go to in Austin. When it closed during the peak of Covid, I was devastated. Although the restaurant hinted at a possible return, there was no official reopening date. Now, three years later, New Fortune 2.0 is back and hasn't missed a beat. Walking into the bustling, efficiently-run dining room filled with people and carts was a sight for sore eyes. Service was excellent and we were checked on often by hostesses and other staff members. We stuck to our favorite traditional dim sum dishes: Shu Mai, Shrimp Rice Noodle Rolls, and BBQ Pork Buns. We came, ate & conquered in just 35 mins-- less time than it took for us to drive there! NOTE: Prices at New Fortune 2.0 are based on the size of the dish. This is the most authentic dim sum I've had in Austin so far! We arrived at noon on a Sunday and there was no wait for a table for 2, but by 12:30 there were tons of people waiting for a table. This is cart dim sum, so I was a little worried when we got seated right by the exit, but one of the owners actually stood right by us and made sure the carts knew to come and offer us food. We were trying to only eat a light brunch, so we didn't get everything we wanted, but we got to try the shumai, har gow, sticky rice, shrimp rice rolls, and turnip cake. Everything was good, and we especially enjoyed the sticky rice, which was a good texture and had plenty of meat. Next time we'll try the soup dumplings and the congee for sure! Including a pot of tea, the bill came out to about $40 for everything. Having had dim sum in a lot of other cities, I won't say this is the best dim sum ever, but it definitely satisfied my cravings. I would recommend this spot over the "bougie" (read: overpriced) spots downtown any day. read more

Weekend service has the carts. People line up as early as 9am. For a party of 10 people we showed up at 11am on a Sunday. Next time we will treat it like tailgating and have chairs and a cooler. The wait was about an hour, but there are plenty of shady spots under trees to hang out in while you wait. Great service - the host and our server were so friendly and attentive. The carts have so much variety. Dirty plates are immediately cleared. The dishes were all amazing. Highly recommend you bring a big group so you can try as many things as possible. Came here on New Year's Day - it was slammed but we only ended up waiting about 15 minutes before getting sat. The staff is very organized and works quickly through the line. There were trays and trays of delicious dim sum that come around the dining room fast so your table is never empty. Good quality dumplings and delicious custard buns. The smell and taste of the pasta was unpleasant; it smelled and tasted like rotten meat. We went to the restaurant, and the owner told us that her cooks had tasted it and it didn't smell or taste bad. We went to New Fortune when it was in Lamar. Found it when it reopened after the worst of Covid. Sadly Covid killed it off and it closed. They reopened as New Fortune 2. It's literally almost exactly the same. The food is very tasty and is served hot with ginormous portions. We got the General Tso and egg fried rice. A perfect combo. The service was Chinese friendly which means they anticipated our needs which is refreshing. What was missing was the dim sum. That doesn't start until July 9th and we will be back. I arrived promptly at 10:05 AM on a Sunday, just as the restaurant opened its doors (early). Surprisingly, there wasn't much of a line, but unfortunately, not everyone in my party was there yet. The restaurant was already seating guests, so I had to wait until my entire party arrived before putting our name on the waitlist. The wait lasted about 15-20 minutes. Once inside, I noticed the restaurant was small, with narrow spaces where carts could pass through. I was seated near the kitchen, which turned out to be an excellent spot as freshly fried dishes were being brought out, and I had the first pick. The air conditioning seemed to be struggling a bit; there were mini air blowers placed around the dining area. While I didn't find it uncomfortably hot, a member of the waitstaff kindly asked if it was alright to set up a mini blower near our table shortly after we were seated. We ordered several dishes, and overall, everything was quite good and reminiscent of what I remember from their original location. Fried items were slightly less frequent, and I didn't see any noodle dishes on the carts; I wonder if those need to be ordered separately off the menu. Around 11:20 AM, I noticed a smaller groups of people waiting, which might be something to consider if you prefer not to arrive early. However, this observation is based on just one visit. read more

Re: Soft Opening Hooray! New Fortune has reopened after closing during the beginning of the pandemic. Their new location is smaller than their former location. There wasn't enough parking in the lot, so my husband had to park in front of residential housing. Dim sum is now available during all hours. Dim sum carts are available only on the weekends. During the weekdays, you can still order dim sum a la carte. Minus one star because the hostess underestimated our wait time by 45 minutes. We were quoted 45 - 50 minutes, but the wait was actually 1.5 hours. Sesame balls and egg custard desserts weren't available on the push cart but were available to order off the menu. Two of the waiters were bad cart drivers and rammed into the back of my chair three times. The aisles weren't wide enough to drive carts, and I'm not even sure it would pass fire exit inspection. We saw turnip-cake while we were waiting but never saw them on the cart by the time we were sat. They must've run out. There weren't as many variety of dishes on the carts compared to their former location. But hopefully, they'll add more dishes as they get established. The gai-lan was just OK. Oh how every single person that walked through the door looked like they were filled with excitement. We went at 5:30p today (Thurs) but we dang well we'll be avoiding it for the next month or two because they start cart dimsum this weekend. All the time though, you can order off the menu dimsum like we did. Food was good. It tasted the same with exception of the fried shrimp balls which seemed a bit smaller and without a claw. Sui Mai was nice and fatty. Harcao had a decent size shrimp ball. Tripe was very flavorful. Ribs were tender and had gojuberries in it. The seafood lover in me got the best of me because we ordered Lobster Tail Fried Rice ($48) which the flavor was great but the lobster not fresh; bit mushy. They don't have fresh live seafood at this time so I recommend to get those later. We'll be returning for when they have the Dungeonous Crab though and believe this is because they're new and may not have a live tank just yet. Service was slightly slow - as expected they're trying to learn their table numbers and keep up with the constant flow of people coming in. Price: all the Dimsum is about $6-7 each which means it's cheaper than Shanghai but still Austin rent pricing. I was craving dim sum and made a mistake of trying to go on a weekend. Long lines out the door and they don't seat incomplete parties so it was just a mess. I wasn't even sure how to get on the waitlist. Tried coming again on a weekday and no line but limited food options since they don't make everything on weekdays. Austin to San Antonio has limited options for dim sum and they're all really bad compared to Dallas but I was pretty impressed with New Fortune. The best dish was the shumai. Very flavorful and juicy. Hargow was okay. Good but not the best we had. Chicken feet and steamed pork rib were also good options. I would skip the fried rice. We got it for our kids but again, not the best. The salt and pepper pork chop was tasty and the portion was generous. Looking forward to going again. I was so sad when this place closed because I used to go with my parents all the time when they would visit me during college, so it brings back a lot of nostalgic memories. You definitely should expect to wait a long time (we waited 35 minutes for a table for 4), and you'll have to wait even longer with a big group of people. Ones that stood out to me were their soup dumpling, shumai, char siu buns, cheung fun, sesame balls, and surprisingly the green beans, though we were surprised the vegetable dishes were the "specialty" pricing which was the most expensive. If you're not already in North Austin, this is certainly a trek. We came for a weeknight dinner - it's one of the only restaurants open past a certain time. In my honest opinion, this is a good size for large gatherings and while the flavors are average, the price is high and portions are small. Presentation of dishes over portion size. Also, dim sum items are microwaved if you're not here on a weekend. They used to have a T and TH special but no more. Bonus points if you can speak canto. read more

TLDR: Take my money. New Fortune 2 is the reincarnation of the original and while many other dim sum places have cropped up in its absence, the people here are coming to show who is the OG and why they deserve the crown. It's like they were the terminator saying "I'll be back." Long story short, one of my most used metrics when gauging a dim sum restaurant is the quality of their chili. This place takes it to new heights by making active not want to use the chili. Not that the chili is bad; it is actually really good. But the food itself is so good that I feel like I'm doing it a disservice by covering over the wonderful flavors and textures with chili oil. Ham sui gok is perfectly crisp on the outside and so mouthwatering savory on the inside. Egg tart is perfect and impossibly delicate and shatteringly good crust. Intestines so savory with a touch of sweetness. Salt and pepper shrimp seasoned perfectly and served with generously sized shrimp. Service is consistent and great whether you speak English or Chinese (Mandarin). My MIL requested another serving of a dish even when the cart hadn't gotten to us and our server tracked it down and brought us the requested dish. All in less than 2 minutes. While it might not be a luxurious banquet hall or anything, who the hell cares when the food is this good. They could serve this outside in the blazing Texas heat and I'd still go to eat this. The beloved New Fortune has returned! They have a soft opening right now and I was lucky enough to have a friend get a table for me so I didn't have to wait. The line outside is long and they say it's about 45 min but it's really 1 hour 30 min. The taste of the dim sum dishes were good, though the wontons were cold (room-temperature). There is not a lot of variety and dishes seem to be more expensive than the old New Fortune. Space is very cramped. There is not a lot of space for the push carts to go through, so expect there to be some collisions with the back of your chair. They don't take reservations for Sat/Sun brunch. You may make reservations for large parties (6+ people). They have dim sum all day! Overall, I'm happy that Austin's dim sum food scene is growing but personally, I would wait until the line dies down to try again. read more

The fact that they're right by my house and it's a walkable distance is even better than having been formerly at the N Lamar location. We stopped by Friday on their second day of business and opening things and goodness, were they busy. We were prepared for a wait, and ordering 15 dim sum dishes on weekdays from their all day dim sum menu was via menu but it took a good while. Of course if we had known it'd have been 2+ hours maybe it wouldn't have been such a huge order I would've put in, but I give them grace for the Austin Asian community being so thrilled and showing up with their pocket books and their loyalty for this household staple! My favs were def the bean curd, Crystal shrimp dumplings and shrimp balls! I'm so so excited that there is legit dim sum cart service options in proximity of North Austin, and lunch special options as well! I showed up at about noon on a Sunday and the restaurant was packed. Many parties waiting to be seated, but luckily, it was just me and my husband dining, so we only waited five minutes. My husband is a vegetarian and my dim sum favorites are meat based, so he chose to order off the menu instead. The service here is pretty prompt and all the servers, to include the hosts, were very nice. Usually, when I go to any tea house, such as ones in Vegas or SF, the staff is super curt and don't necessarily want to be bothered unless they know they're personally getting a tip/$$. Not to sound like a glutton, but we usually order a lot of food, but this time around, we were catching a flight home, so we didn't overeat. My husband ordered veggie chow fun and the salt & pepper tofu. Both of those dishes were super fresh. I felt the chow fun was just a little under seasoned but the noodles were cooked well, as were the vegetables. The tofu was really good too. I felt like the tofu bits were coated in panko/corn meal, which was surprising to me, but all the same, very tasty. The plates I always order at dim sum: har gao, dan tat, spare ribs, and sticky rice. The dan tat/egg tarts tasted exactly how they should; eggy and buttery with a flaky crust. The har gao/shrimp dumplings were good. The shrimp were slightly overcooked, but still all good. The spare ribs were nice and savory. I wanted a little more spiciness to them, but there's chili oil on the table, so problem solved. The sticky rice was only ok. The rice had a dry stickiness to it and had very little flavor. There was a good amount of sausage slices, but I don't recall anything else stuffed into the rice. Overall, the restaurant is clean, the staff is nice/cheerful and accommodating. It seemed like the tables turn over fairly quickly, so I don't think you'll have to wait too long for a table. The parking lot is also big, you shouldn't have any problems finding a place to park. read more

You know a spot is authentic when all the servers speak canto and they're playing a chinese cooking show on tv and you're surrounded by old Asian grandmas chowing down on chicken feet. Ahhhh the memories of the old "New Fortune". Welcome to New Fortune 2, it's like nothing changed just a smaller space and complete with crowds too. As far as dim sum goes for Austin this place still has got it and certainly worth trying for any local lover. Atmosphere: I was actually impressed with the decor, I believe the building also used to be an asian restaurants previously, but the spacing and theming is a bit better than their last location. Food: Here it is one of the few dim sum spots in Austin that actually serves with carts in that traditional style. That just completes the whole experience, and makes it feel even more community like. With that said the choice of food doesn't disappoint, from the siu mai and the chicken feet, I had cravings and left happy. Service: I went during the dim sum service which in ways can be a bit chaotic, but expected. Carts of food come out with people serving them. It may not be as english friendly for some but the servers there will try to assist the best way they can. Every once in a while I get dim sum cravings.
