This restaurant has been here for many years and I've always wanted to go but circumstances had always prevented me until now. After my doctor's visit I walked over to have lunch. Inside was large and a little dark. They said I could sit wherever I wanted so I went to sit by the window. They brought over water and a menu. They have an extensive lunch menu. I got L5 which was shrimp in Belachan Sauce with eggplant. I got a Malaysian ice tea as well as a roti for an appetizer. The lunch comes with a choice of wonton and tom yum soup. Although I asked for wonton they brought tom yum instead. I didn't bother changing it because it was good. The shrimp in Belachan Sauce was good. It went well with rice and there was a fair amount of shrimp. The roti was a little thicker and harder than I'm use to. The sauce was a little bland, I wish it had a little more curry flavor. I had gone to this place several years ago. The layout is pretty much the same. We went in for late lunch on a weekend and the place was sort of empty. The establishment has got high ceilings, the dining area is, in a way, divided into two; an elevated section (about 2-2.5') where what would be the floor is made out of diamond plate sheets (kind of rustic looking) and houses the smaller tables and the ground level section with tables for larger parties. This is my favorite restaurant in Forest Hills! The food is always delicious and well priced with big portions. The staff is super friendly and it feels like you're with family here. Was a little skeptical because the reviews across platforms are a bit mixed and anytime more than one Asian cuisine is served I become a bit suspicious, but ultimately this place really came through. We started with the roti telur, which was so much more interesting than typical roti. And a really solid portion. Food (4/5): We ordered the Indian Mee Goreng, beef satay and roti canai, and ABC shaved ice. The prices are actually reasonably good here. I actually enjoyed all the dishes but carefully curated it based on Yelp recommendations. The beef satay was well cooked with a nice peanut sauce and good touch of onions and cucumber. The Mee goreng had a good texture and flavor as well. We were able to add chicken for an extra dollar to the Mee goreng. The roti canai also had nice crispy and chewy parts. The only gripe is that the sauce could have had more of a kick and been more flavorful. The ABC shaved ice was the right amount of sweet and a nice dessert to end the meal. Ambiance (4/5): The restaurant is a bit dark but I really liked the Southeast Asian theme. They had lanterns hanging, wooden decor and tropical signs. I came here for lunch on a Friday afternoon and it was a good decision. My first time here and in general trying a Malaysian restaurant. We were greeted immediately and the service overall was great and quick. Our waitress was very friendly and very helpful! We tried the Malaysian fried noodle with beef and the chicken curry with white rice. Portions are big - we shared both between the two of us to try both meals and we still ended up taking some food home. You definitely get a good amount of food for the price. They forgot to punch in a few items, so we had to tell them to adjust the bill. We ordered a roti, chicken char kway teow, and chicken Indian mee coreng. Back in June, I attempted to walk from the express bus stop in Rego Park to Kew Gardens train station to transfer to the Q46 bus and ended up here because it was starting to get dark and I was hungry. I've never been to this restaurant but it was dead and they did temperature checks. They close relatively early but they sat me down and I ate indoors. There was no access to the bathroom. I order the Thai ice tea and had the chicken satay along with the grilled pork chop over rice. The portions were generous and I ended up taking the pork chop dish home. I've had better versions of the dish. I would return to try more stuff such as their roti, Hainanese chicken with rice, beef rendang and Malaysian crispy noodle. Came on a quiet Thursday night. We started with the roti and chicken skewers. Roti was made fresh to order. The chicken was well seasoned and a smoky flavor. I'm not sure why there are so many bad to mixed reviews for New Pinang, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the good food and even better hospitality of the employees. I was skeptical at first when my mother proposed having dinner here, and I saw the mixed Yelp reviews, but left a fan of the restaurant. My mother, wife and I came here to din on a Saturday evening at around 9pm, which was pretty late by our standards. The restaurant wasn't much to stare at and was located right next to a Hibachi restaurant that seemed like it was 5 times the size of New Pinang. Since it was 9pm, it wasn't a surprise that it was nearly empty by the time we stepped in. There were only 2 other tables occupied and, of course, we were the last customers to leave for the evening. The restaurant was a good size, had plenty of tables and seats, but was a bit beat up inside. It wasn't terrible, but probably could use a little modernization. Throughout our meal, the employees were very friendly. The waitress we had was great and very cordial. The menu wasn't huge, but it had exactly what we needed. There were appetizers, soups, salads, poultry and meat entrees, seafood entrees, sizzling dishes, rice entrees, noodles and desserts. To be honest, the menu was pretty similar to what we typically found in Chinese restaurants. Since it was only the 3 of us, we didn't go crazy and just kept it simple. We ordered the following: Pineapple Fried Rice Half Hainanese Chicken Eggplant with Garlic Sauce House Special Sizzling Bean Curd with ground pork and shrimp with vegetables In my books, everything was really really good. The Pineapple Fried Rice was cooked well and brought to us in a giant gutted out pineapple. The half Hainanese Chicken was tasty and came with a side of ginger and hot sauce, which were both welcome sites. Also, it was quite a large order for just a half a chicken. The Eggplant with Garlic Sauce was excellent. It was flavorful, had plenty of sauce and I actually could've used more eggplant! It was probably our favorite dish that evening. Lastly, the House Special Sizzling Bean Curd with ground pork and shrimp with vegetables was also very "saucy" and had many pieces of large bean curd/tofu. There was also a nice mix of vegetables thrown in too. Everything was just really good, food and service wise. I'm not sure how the restaurant is during more typical dining hours, but with such good food and service I was surprised there weren't more people. Like I said, the late time of the evening didn't help. Anyhow, there's no doubt I'll be visiting again with my family since some of them don't live too far away. This is one of those tough reviews where I wish they allowed for a half star rating. I'd give them two and a half if I could. The problem is that if I had written this last night, I might have settled on three stars. But, it's now 14 hours later and I'm still feeling the lingering effects of the food, and not in a good way. I hate Pho Bo, a Vietnamese beef noodle soup. I am a Asian noodle soup addict. It's my favorite thing. For me to eat less than a quarter of it, speaks volumes. I took it home thinking I could eat it today, and it's just gross. The vegetable spring rolls were over cooked and burnt. My other half had wonton soup. It's kind of hard to screw that up. My other half ordered the coconut rice dessert. It wasn't even palatable. Before we left, I went to wash my hands and the waiter area was outside the bathroom. Dirty dishes piled up. Okay yelp you hit the nail on the head for this one, one of the few times the masses at yelp has been spot on with their evaluation of a restaurant, in my opinion at least, remember folks when looking up yelp reviews, these are strictly opinions of the untrained masses. Came here on a whim one day on my way to Dim Sum around the area, just out of sheer curiosity to see how the only malaysian restaurant around the area was. Came in here checked out the menu and instantly knew that this is a Chinese run place (plus they spoke Chinese here) so it definitely tempered my expectations here. Ordered the Roti canai, beef satay, a noodle dish and the pinang sizzling beef special, and toped it all off with an abc ice. The roti here was decent, nice crispy roti ( althought a bit too crispy and dry and not light and fluffy enough ) with decent curry dipping sauce, although it was a little too watery and too salty. The satay was really good, no complaints here as it was tender and had great flavor to it ( i think lemon grass and peanut sauce marinade? ) as well as a great peanut dipping sauce. The main courses were definitey lacking, the special pinang sizzling beef tasted like they just drenched it and stirfried it in ketchup and served it up, the noodles were okay, but definitely drenched in soy sauce and didnt have enough dimensions elsewhere. ABC ice was pretty decent too, the ice was shaved nicely and the toppings were not overwhelmingly sweet, definitely enjoyed the desert. Overall an okay place, the appetizers and dessert was pretty good, the main dishes were extremely lacking. I would definitely come back here again and try it just cause its the only option around, hopefully something else on the menu will change my opinion read more

Our family has been coming here for over a decade. We've found the food to be consistent and there are dishes we especially like. The Roti is very good. It's fluffy, chewy and crispy. It does come with a side dish of curry filled with pieces of chicken and potato. It's flavorful and you want to eat all of the curry, even if you have to pour the remainder in a bowl of rice. Hainan Chicken is spot on. It's cooked perfectly. The skin is smooth and even the breast meat is juicy when other places have it dry. The Chowfun with egg mixture (#89) is exactly how I like it. We had it with seafood (+$2) and it was well worth it. The thickness of the sauce on broad noodles is pure comfort food. To be fair, the Bo Luc Lac (Stir fried steak cubes) comes with a salad. The salad is decent but the beef lacks flavor. It tastes deep fried. However, the highlight of my visit today was their customer service. The one worker in the front checked in on us constantly and ensured we were well taken care of. When we left, my wife dropped her drivers license underneath the table. We called and they told me they would check. Within minutes, they called me back and told me they found the driver's license under the table and attempted to chase after us to return it but we were nowhere in sight. We happened to be next door at TokyoMart. Imagine all the trouble to have to replace a government ID! When you visit an establishment and they take care of you like family, you can easily overlook a dish that did not meet your expectations. I'll be coming back. The roti cani, usually one of my favorite parts of the meal, was served almost cold and was very crumbly and dry, instead of being warm and doughy. The chili chicken was the dish I was looking forward to the most but probably was the most disappointing. Too salty and far more breading than any actual chicken. What sold me on this place was when I googled "Malaysian restaurant in Forest Hills" and the first image for New Pinang that came up was a smiling, Asian family at a round table. For some subconscious reason, this seals the deal for me. I imagine its akin to the assurance white people feel when they see a smiling white family on a bag of dumplings. But I digress. New Pinang is not superbly impressive, but it will do for Malaysian food in Forest Hills. I really enjoyed the Roti Canai, which is a must for any Malaysian restaurant. The pancake was fresh and flaky, but the chicken curry dip could use some work. The BEST thing we ordered was definitely the Chow Kueh Teow--it was a really solid noodle dish, probably one of the better renditions I've had of chow kueh teow! Conversely, The beef rendang was a little too heavy/fatty. I personally always love a good clay pot--so I also ordered the Tofu & Fish Fillet Clay Pot. It wasn't bad, but I've surely had better and more authentic. The chicken flavored rice was a little too yellow--true Haianese chicken rice should only really have a tint of yellow--so this led me to believe they may have added more flavoring to achieve this tinge. There were a few surprises here which I'll share: 1. There's no Penang curry at Pinang restaurant. 2. This is mostly Malaysian cuisine; similar to Thai, but with important differences. I also learned some new things about penang curry: 1. Its proper spelling is "phanaeng". 2. It's a variant of red curry. 3. It's not Malaysian. It's Thai / Northern Malaysian A fun place to eat. Decor is cool: dark, wooden, and metallic, somewhat beach-meets-industrial. A little what I'd imagine a restaurant in Thailand would look like. There's a large aquarium with the ugliest, meanest fish alive. My 1.5y daughter LOVES to point at the fish and say "Dis! Dis!" The fish, in turn, try to snap at my daughter's fingers through the glass. Service is very good and personable. The woman who waits tables is very friendly, pleasant, competent, and attentive. She gets a kick out of a 1.5y toddler loving Malaysian/Thai food. We love her. I believe she is from Malaysia. Home Made Roti Canai: A- Roti Telur: B- Murtabak: B- All three appetizers have the same *delicious* roti dipping sauce; the difference is what you dip. Canai is the typical "pancake" that you dip into the roti. The Telur and Murtabak are both like square onion quesadillas. They are pretty dishes; however, they both are too thick and lack any kind of flavor. Furthermore, they aren't absorptive enough to get flavor from the roti. I like the canai better, but it should be more crispy. The roti itself is absolutely superb, and the chicken in it is one of the softest pieces of meat I've ever had the pleasure of putting into my mouth. Vegetable Spring Rolls: B I thought they were going to be like the raw Vietnamese style spring rolls, but they're the standard Chinese fried spring rolls. Not homemade. Frozen. Mediocre. Thai Curry Puff: A Definitely handmade: not frozen! Nicely spiced with curry. The dough is flaky and deliciously yeasty. Thai Fish Cakes: B- Unique: I've never had anything like it before. I didn't care for them, but my wife liked them. They are small, rubbery red cylinders. They're very strongly flavored with ginger and fish. It's the kind of thing you either like or hate. I hated, but still giving them B- since my wife liked them. Durian Milkshake: C+ Unique. I didn't care for it, my wife hated it, but I can see someone liking it. Durian is known to be the smelliest fruit on Earth. People describe durian as smelling like rotten onions, turpentine, and raw sewage.The milkshake will definitely keep the boys out of the yard.. it's more than stinky... it's stanky! Still, if you've never had durian before, you should try it. Once you get over the initial stank, it has a vanilla finish. Tom Ka Soup: A- Somewhat close to the tom ka soup that I make. Lots of nam pla... good and salty, but it needs more lime. Some kaffir lime leaves and more lemon grass would be awesome.One of the best tom ka I've had in NYC (by best I mean that it has traditional Thai flavors). Red Curry: A- Clearly not Thai red curry. It's not red, and the flavor is like Indian curry. No Thai nuance: no shrimp paste, lemon grass, galangal, all the things we associate with Thai curry. The waitress said it's Malaysian curry. OK, so now I know what Malaysian curry is like! Similar to Indian curry. The thickness / consistency makes this stand out. It's almost a stew. The flavor is very good, and I *love* the consistency. Just don't expect Thai red curry! Thai Green Curry: C Very spicy but had no flavor other than "hot". Didn't taste like green curry. No lemongrass. No nam pla. No fish paste. No lime. There was nothing "Thai" about it. I like spicy food, but a spicy dish should have more flavor to offer than raw "heat". Spare Ribs with Garlic Flavor: A Beautifully grilled. Expertly cooked: charbroiled but still very juicy. There was just enough fat to really kick up the flavor and keep the meat deliciously fatty but not oily. The perfect ribs. I would definitely order this again without hesitation. Bun Xao: A Some physical characteristics of pad thai, but with a flavoring reminiscent of moo shu. There's a dark smoky flavor which reminds me of lapsang souchong tea. It comes with a sweet / vinegary Vietnamese dipping sauce. If you want an awesome dish and are disappointed when a pad thai is dry and no very fishy / limey, then this is a good dish to order (just keep in mind that it's a Vietnamese dish, not a Thai / Malaysian dish.)
