Went to meet one of my old student and her mom.  She was heading off to college and wanted to donate her sparring gear.   So she decided on New Taraval Cafe for Sunday Brunch. Parking is not that bad, plenty of street parking in the neighborhood ... well within a 5 minute walk. Note- get here early because there will be a line.  The wait is a bit long but definitely worth it. The staff is wonderful and will make you feel like home.   I ordered the corned beef has with 2 eggs.   Generous portions of corned beef hash and flat top potatoes.  Crispy and well seasoned.  Cannot beat 2 runny egg yolks mixing with the hash. The only negative is the coffee... a little weak for me...but I can live with it. read more

First meal of the year (HAPPY NEW YEAR!) and of course we had to go to a diner! Frequent place we venture to as it is within walking distance from the apartment. My bf and I came out here around 1ish (we didn't go to sleep until 4am) and were lucky enough to be seated before they closed at 2pm as there was a long list of people ahead of us. White board for you to write down your name and party size. We waited outside and luckily it was just drizzling. Stan the owner was great and personable with us once there was room inside to wait. We left around 2:20 but there were a few stragglers left but we didn't feel we were rushed and the staff was eating with us after the diner rush. My wife and I have had breakfast many times at the New Taraval Cafe. We have never been disappointed. This morning was no different. A friend told me that he enjoyed a breakfast here several months ago. I hoped to try them during the holidays but they were closed those mornings. In arranging a Sunday morning meetup with my travel companions before our trip, I chose this corner spot for brunch. A friend arrived there first and signed up for a table as two parties were ahead of him. After I dropped a friend off and found parking across the street after driving down a few streets, I walked over to the restaurant. I sat at the side bench as my friends waited in front for his name to be called. About 15 minutes later, we were led to a four-top table on the left halfway in. Given menus, we talked about the variety of breakfast and special menu items before ordering our meals. A friend opted for coffee while my other friend and I had ice water. I've had this place bookmarked ever since I saw a review on social media. The review focused on their cookies, but the food looked good enough to try. Parking is all street parking, which can be hit or miss. The establishment itself is small, and you'll need to write your name on the waitlist. Fortunately, I only waited about 10 minutes before being seated since I was a small party, and larger groups were waiting for tables. My fiancé and I were seated at the counter. Italian Omelet: This was good but not something I'd order again. The potatoes, however, were disappointing. They had the texture of boiled potatoes that were lightly stir-fried, with only a few crispy spots. Most were soft, soggy, and lacked flavor. I prefer super crispy potatoes, so I'd definitely sub these out next time. They also needed a lot of sauce, salt, and pepper to make them more palatable. Breakfast Burrito: This was just alright. It was a bit wet and greasy, which wasn't ideal. One thing I did love was their hot sauces. They seem to be a recipe from one of the workers (his face is on the logo), and they're all delicious with a nice kick. Definitely a highlight of the meal! If you're looking for a classic diner breakfast, this spot definitely gets the job done. Came in to eat some late late breakfast but was told it was burger night. No biggie, got the meatball burger and it was good! It came with a fat portion of crinkle fries. Swung by back in February on a Saturday around 11am and tables were full. Very no frills, lively and nice people working there. There was a waitlist inside by the entrance. Took about 15 minutes to be seated. Ordered their Hot Link Scramble and really enjoyed it. Friendly and welcoming vibe the moment we walked into New Taraval Cafe. While checking out the breakfast/lunch menu, we noticed the hot sauces on the table and the server looking like the guy on the hot sauce bottles! Well, it turns out, the server made these sauces during the pandemic due to the sriracha shortage and high prices! While I'm not into super spicy sauces, my partner is! So we got Orlando to sit down with us and talk about his hot sauce concoctions. It was interesting to hear about the fermentation process and trying to find the right combinations for each flavor. He's still working on more sauces and perfecting the ones he has on the table. Our favorite among them was the habanero sauce because it had a little bit of sweetness and a definite spicy kick. Haha my tongue was numb after tasting them all with my fries, but it was enjoyable. Thankfully, these hot sauces don't burn all the way down the throat. It stopped at my tongue. I'm sure milk or some dairy would have helped, but I only had water which helped cool it down without a problem. I'm glad Orlando makes them tolerable even for weaklings like me! On to the food..... ***OUR PICKS*** SMASH BURGER ~ My partner's been searching for a good smash burger joint, but still hasn't found his favorite spot yet. We saw this on the menu, so he had to try it out! While the edges were crispy, the burger was well done. He was hoping for a medium done burger. I'm not even sure they could make it medium done since the burger has to be flattened. The fries weren't crispy, but they did the job on mopping up the hot sauces we were sampling. 3/5.5 FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH ~ I enjoyed the crispy battered chicken filet that was in my sandwich. It's nothing fancy, but the chicken was crispy and that's all that I could hope for. Typical fixings in the sandwich which were okay. Fries could have been thinner, so it would crisp up better or the potatoes weren't dried enough to get crispy. But I think these were house made and not frozen, which is better than most restaurants. 4/5 The best part is the service! Orlando and staff are great with their customers. The grandkids insisted on helping pour the cream into our coffees and ended up dribbling much of it on the table. The wait person happily wiped it up and said, "Well, that's how they learn." This time, I shared a breakfast burrito with my granddaughter and, to my benefit, she didn't want any pico de gallo/tomatoes or mushrooms, so I had them put them on the side (which they happily did) and I had them all for myself!! The steak and eggs is what you'd expect from any value diner, except here it's better prepared. The smashed potatoes made the texture 10x better and extra crispy. Service was excellent. I've known about New Taraval Cafe since college and it was a staple breakfast spot if you ever wanted something somewhat close by. It almost felt like a hidden spot as you could come anytime and there wouldn't be much of wait. We got seated at the counter and ordered immediately since we were looking at the menu outside. I wanted to try out the breakfast burrito and she got the Italian omelet. Waited maybe 15 minutes and our food came out. The breakfast burrito was filled with eggs, bacon, beans, potatoes, tomatoes, and came with a side of tomatillo salsa verde. Tasted a bit greasy and it was falling apart, but it was filling for sure. The Italian omelet had Italian sausage, mushroom, onion, tomatoes, avocado, mozzarella, and pesto. Quite the combo, but wasn't too sure how the avocado worked with the rest of the ingredients. Highlight for us was Orlando's hot sauce though! Went great with everything and had a nice little kick. For starters, the place is literally a hole in the wall. Not a negative, but be aware that it is quite small with limited seating. The vibe is that of a true neighborhood greasy spoon. Again, not a negative. In fact, New Taraval feels and looks like what you'd expect, even want, from a good diner. The staff are incredibly friendly and there are a lot of regulars that keep coming back for just that reason. Where New Taraval kinda misses the mark, and this is not really their fault, but the place is tight. When I say tight I mean the tables are in pretty close proximity to each other. That's totally manageable. However, a few of the tables are within just a few feet of the unisex bathroom. Last time we were there the odor was pretty rough and it made eating a little difficult. As for the food, they offer pretty standard fare. The Florentine benedict was decent, but there was way too much spinach used in the dish. This may not be typical, but it definitely detracted. Of course, this is totally subjective, but two of us made the exact same observation. All in all, it's just OK, but your mileage may vary. read more

listen. i think this might be one of the best brunch spots in the Sunset neighborhood. (i know this is technically parkside but it's a slim border to me ok lol). for me, this place is tied with Art's Cafe for #1 brunch spot in the area off rip what i appreciated the most about NTC was the indoor seating. ...and it's not just cuz i was there during the bomb cyclone and was just relieved to be not wet AND hungry lol. yes it was small inside, but what great cafes aren't? but the magnificent vibe was amplified by the coziness. the place was packed. all the people working there are very kind, but the main server (forget his name, but he was a young ish (late 20s?) asian man in a red shirt) who whisked around the floor chatting up every table he catered to. his personality brightened up the vibe of the place. it was VERY clear he knew many of his guests on a personal level (unless he didn't, then he's just a very extroverted guy) so it was all just so charming then of course, the food: piping hot and large portions. the side of potatoes was excellently crispy. my entree for Joe's Scramble was alright, i relied heavily on the hot sauce options on my table. but their menu was the perfect amount of options (more than 1 page but no more than 5), and had a fair number of sweet brunch options that i wanted to try next time. i will deffff be back :) read more
