Still great after many years. It is obvious this dine-in breakfast spot have its regulars and the staff are just as welcoming to new faces. It started getting busy after 8am. Along with the years that I haven't visited, prices naturally also increased. Country scramble ($16) now comes with bacon without the slice of cheese on top. Really hit the spot regardless. They didn't have rye bread today, so I opted for sourdough. Coffee ($3.50) comes with unlimited refills. Easily better than most overpriced and more popular brunch spots in the city. read more

Small breakfast spot serving up traditional diner favorites and a couple specialty items like their loco moco. I ended up ordering the very basic eggs potatoes and toast. Potatoes had some nice crispy bits to them but they were pretty bland, needed quite a bit more flavor. Others in the group made the bolder and better choice of ordering the breakfast burrito and loco moco, which based on the reaction I plan to get next time. When you arrive you put your name on the list and wait outside for them to call you in. We had quite a wait on a weekend morning, but it's a pretty small spot so that was expected. The service and hospitality here was beyond amazing. Our server, who I'm assuming was the manager, was extremely friendly and engaging, even with a packed house and people waiting outside. Took the time to talk chat with us for a bit before taking our orders and pumping out the food. Food came out quick and was probably the most reasonably priced food I've seen in the city. This is a great neighborhood breakfast spot. I came here with my daughter on a Sunday and fully expected to have to wait but luckily we got in, there were seats at the counter. I read that someone objected to waiting because they don't take reservations. To that I would say that Denny's takes reservations. My daughter ordered the Chilaquiles which comes with bacon and eggs on a bed of tortilla chips cooked in a red salsa sauce. It was delicious but a bit on the spicy side. I had the Loco Moco (You won't get this at Denny's). This is not a traditional Hawaiian style Loco Moco as the gravy has mushrooms in it, lots of delicious mushrooms. But the beef patty is a GOOD size over a nice portion of white rice. Two eggs topped the dish covered in a generous portion of gravy. Since I love mushrooms, this was delicious, definitely a great dish. The place is on the small size, not a lot of room for large groups but clean and neat. Reminds me of the small breakfast spots you find an beach areas. Service was great, the staff was friendly and attentive. I would definitely come here again when I am in town!!! read more

If you're visiting SF or a local resident, definitely stop by this hidden gem off of the corner of Taraval! There was a bit of a wait when we got there around 12:30pm but not that long- max 15 minutes. We all ordered something different for their breakfast/brunch menu and it was so filling! I was only able to finish half of my omelette! The fruit salad platter was decorated so nicely and the fruits were all super sweet. I was lucky during the pandemic. I had New Taraval Cafe to feed me and they fed me a lot. I'd pop in sporadically before then but it really became my regular place for those crazy years. And they are still feeding me. Whether it's breakfast especially some of their weekend specials, Stan's Burger Mondays when I straggle in after a workout or Orlando's dinner service on Fridays (and Saturdays) evening, NTC continues to take care of me. And I usually can't resist Stan's cookies or Orlando's tiramisu. read more

Why are all the dependable greasy spoons on this side of town? OK, not all of them, but I think the ones in my neighborhood have turned into either boba shops or marijuana dispensaries. This one's on a prominent corner with a royal blue awning about a half-block away from the similarly retro Tennessee Grill (review: https://bit.ly/3K0Mbis). I stopped by after randomly taking the L bus from downtown. The space was a bit on the cramped side or maybe it just felt that way because it was buzzing with business when I walked in around 1PM. They serve breakfast and lunch until 3PM every day. As a solo diner, I sat myself down at the counter and perused the appetizing menu, breakfast on one side and lunch on the other. I knew either way I go that potatoes would be involved. With little hesitation, I ordered the $15 Joe's Scramble because I was in the mood for ground beef with my eggs as well as spinach and onion with a $2 charge for the inevitable sautéed mushrooms (photo: https://bit.ly/3jMtMeM). I love new taraval cafe! This is a locally owned business and you can tell the owner/chef puts a lot of love and care into serving up homecooked and comforting breakfast plates. I've always liked how they have the option to get fruit with your plate instead of potatoes, the fruit selection they give is always fresh, changing with the season, and well presented. I tried the pork chop and eggs for the first time. Everything needed a bit more salt for my taste but I don't mind, as everyone can salt to their liking using the table condiments. The pork chops still had really great base flavor and a good sear, just needed a little salt to bring out the flavors more :) Generous portion of home fried potatoes as well, which is always appreciated. Pairing this plate with a warm mug of diner coffee that never goes empty, I couldn't imagine a better Saturday morning! Had a good breakfast / lunch last month. (Sorry for the late review.) My loco moco was excellent with good taste, lots of gravy and good portion size. My food mates had the smash burger, hash and eggs and finally pancakes. I think my dish was the best, followed by the hash and eggs. Pancakes looked good but didn't ask my friend on how it was. The smash burger, I was told was ok. We were lucky that we came off hour time and enjoyed our meal with conversation time and several coffee refills. Definitely, a going away in the future, small home style diner in the sunset. Heard that the son is carrying on the tradition of this cafe legacy. Solid breakfast spot. Friendly staff and they refill your coffee. Lots of family and locals hanging out here. The space isn't super big so maybe come early to avoid any wait! I got here around 9am on a Saturday and it was 80% full! I ordered an orange juice and a new taraval special. I chose the 2 bacon, 2 eggs scrambled, and 2 pieces French toast. You can choose between bacon or sausage and between French toast or pancake. I was very satisfied with my choice and loved the French toast!! My bacon was super crispy which I enjoyed. But I loved the French toast the most.. the butter just hit the spot. My husband ordered coffee and a country scramble. He substituted toast for pancake instead. The home fried potatoes were delicious! The pancake was super fluffy... makes me wonder how they get it so fluffy! Overall, I'd come back! Very affordable prices and the food is good. The owner is super friendly and acknowledges his customers and even sits and chats with them for a bit. I highly recommend supporting this small business. Parking on Taraval is metered. Had Saturday brunch here with a couple of the homies and really enjoyed the experience and food. It was packed but we didn't have to wait too long to get seated. My friend Patrick is a regular and knows the owner Stanley so we got a full NTC orientation. Stanley even gave us advice on physical therapy! Full service diner! Food wise, I got the corned beef hash and eggs. Along with the custom hot sauce (made by one of the staff Orlando) the food was smackin! We even bought a couple bottles of hot sauce to take home! Went here with my Mom for lunch. It's a hole in the wall with only a few tables inside. You see the kitchen right as you enter. There were a table of cops there eating as we entered. The place was full but a table was there just not cleaned. The busboy said to wait a second while he had time to clean it and set it up for us. I got the Mushroom Swiss burger and added some bacon. It was great but the bun got soggy and was falling apart. I asked for the fries to be extra crispy to, nice. My Mom got the patty melt and she liked it to. Not a bad place. I would go again. Service needs a big upgrade. Patiently waited as the sign asks please wait to be seated. After 2 minutes of standing and watching the staff walk past us twice without acknowledging us was puzzling. Then when he asked if we wanted a counter seat we asked for the table in the back. He asked us to wait. Ok. After another couple minutes, a regular walks in and is greeted immediately and offered a seat. I turned to my friend and ask if he wanted to go to the Tennessee grill which is half a block away. We did and that was the best thing this morning. Greeted right as we walked in. Offered a seat right away. Within a minute, coffee and drinks were taken and brought to table. If you love good american diner food, this is the place in the city to go to. There are lines out the door but worth the wait. I visit the city sporadically throughout the year yet the owner and the waiters recognize me and treat me like a regular. I've had to wait 10-20 minutes at times, because the place can get packed (Always a good sign) The food is great and the customer service is fantastic. I always enjoy the pancakes but if the orange french toast is ever on the menu I highly recommend trying it. read more

What a GEM! This spot has been around as long as I can remember and for good reason. The portions are huge and the staff are warm and friendly. If you decide to dine in don't forget to add your name to the list by the front door. Our party of two came in around 11:30 and had to wait roughly 5-7 minutes for a table. Each order comes with a side of house potatoes and your choice of toast. The house potatoes are so fluffy and the griddle top makes for a crispy exterior yumm. We went with sour dough and yummm it definitely satisfied our craving. The scrambles are delicious and plentiful, there are a bunch of toppings to include in every bite. As well as having all the condiments you could want from sriracha, cholula, and tapatio to ketchup. Will be back for some amazing breakfast that is fair priced and large portioned!! read more

New favorite breakfast spot in San Francisco that is well priced and delicious. Parking is relatively easy to find here and though it can get packed, it definitely is worth the wait. I love the Italian omelette over here. The omelette is filled with Italian mushroom, mushroom, onion, tomato, avocado, cheese and lathered in delicious pesto sauce. All my years living in the Sunset and I never tried this place for breakfast. So, finally decided to give it a go this weekend when craving breakfast foods. Pretty busy on a Saturday morning but we were lucky to snag a table for 4 all the way in the back. (Please note - this is a cash only establishment. I didn't know so had to run to an ATM up the street.) Took our drink orders quickly but had to flag our server down to place our orders. I opted for the Loco Moco ($12). Good sized hamburger patty and 2 sunny side up eggs. Eggs were cooked perfectly. Unfortunately, to me, despite how good this dish looked it lacked flavor and was bland. No flavor to the meat and no flavor even with all that mushroom gravy. Disappointed. My kiddo ordered the Garden Salad ($10). She said it was a good salad but noted there was way too much dressing. My dad ordered the California burrito ($12). He liked it - ate half and brought the other half home. Mom ordered the Breakfast Special ($10) and said it was ok. Service was ok - good in that they brought the coffee pot around often for coffee refills. However, didn't really check on us and we had to get their attention when we needed something.
