I'm not going to lie, I crave dirt dogs ever since I had them years ago when I went to college out here. So whenever I come back I make it a point to get some. New Way Lunch is unbelievably tasty and the staff are always friendly. Kelly was super happy and personable, but honestly everyone there is. These world famous dogs are $1.65, yes you read that right. The buns are soft and they have just the right ratio of toppings (mustard, diced onions, and special sauce). Their onion rings are crispy and worth it...get the large size. Don't pass this place up...so worthwhile. If you're really hungry I'm sure you can eat lots of them. From the outside, New Way looks like the biggest hot dog dive in the capital region. (Next to Gus' of Watervliet, of course. Nothing can touch a walk up hot dog joint). This place has been around since 1919, and I'm pretty sure the exterior paint is not much younger. I hoped the interior matched the exterior. Oh how wrong I was. I must have walked into a different place. It was nice, clean...almost eerie considering the outside... No bother. Time for hot dog ordering. New Way serves up full size dogs cooked on the griddle, topped with meat sauce, onions and yellow mustard (lame, spicy brown will always remain dear to my heart). I ordered up two, with everything plus a side of onion rings. $1.30 for a hot dog is a steal. The dog itself had a decent snap, but felt rather slim in diameter. Portions seemed a bit off. A lot of bun, not enough meat sauce and hot dog. The onion rings were pretty damn good though. New Way's hot dog is solid, but nothing out of ordinary for the capital region. As a little boy I remember my dad telling me about Dirty John's as early as I can remember. It was a bed time story in our house that sent me to bed salivating for the first taste of that glorious tube steak covered in the secret sauce. My mother was not keen on the idea of a food with the word "dirt" in it so I was left to imagine what these hot dogs tasted like. At last, as a young boy, my father snuck me over when Mom wasn't around and I saw the inside of this glorious shack I had heard so much about in my father's tales. "TWO NO ONIONS" He shouted out. Then looked to me. "Two what?" I said? He whispered in my ear. "Oh!" I exclaimed, "this is Dirty John's!" A few people chuckled. "TWO NO ONIONS" I proclaimed. The man behind the counter snagged two of the snappiest dogs ever, slapped them into buns, and then with calculated twists of the wrist he spread the secret sauce onto the dogs with a spoon from a mystery pot. Oooooooh. Then it was time for consumption. The first thing you notice is that the dogs are hot and fresh. The sauce is the color of chili but it has the smell of chocolate and is not chili. First bite. "SNAP" Gotta love a crisp dog with a snap. Then the sauce and the mustard hits your taste buds and you would swear you have died and gone to hod dog heaven. Bites 2-5 happen very fast and the dog disappears quite quickly. Repeat. Relax. Enjoy. Add pie. Have 1 more. Finito. With 2 locations in Glens Falls I run to New Way as often as possible to get my hands on a few dirt sticks. My order hasn't changed much...now a days I say "3 NO ONIONS and EXTRA SAUCE." I was born and raised in Glens falls in the 40s & 50s. The New Way Lunch (aka Dirty John's, a nickname spoken with love) was always my favorite late-night stop. I left the North Country in 1963 but DJ's was always my first stop when I returned to GF to visit relatives. I've ordered DJ's dogs on the I-net and finally mastered the "secret sauce" after 25 years of experimenting. I no longer have occasion to visit the North Country, sadly, but I do have my own version of a DJ's dog quite frequently. I dig the vibe of this place and I think Guy Fieri would, too: little chili dogs ("hot dogs with meat sauce" as the angry locals would say) that come out on paper plates for you to devour at will. Decor's been a little retro since '07 and the booths are a little worse for the wear, but it just adds to the atmosphere. Absolutely great place. First of all, the parking is easy. New Way is located next to a free public lot. Plus it has its own small private lot in the back, as well as on street parking. The hours are great. Open till 2 am on Friday and Saturday if you need a place to stop into after a night on the town. The restaurant and the bathroom are always clean. The people working there seem to be in an upbeat mood.The servers are prompt and usually get your order right. They don't act like they're doing you a favor, and thank you for your patronage. New Way is known for its hot dogs, and they are good. I wouldn't put New Way among the top five hot dog joints the Capital District, but probably rank it in the top ten. What I always get is the 6 ounce burger. Always fresh and cooked to order, the 6 ounce burgers are top notch, some of the best burgers in the area. The four ounce burgers are just average because they're just not as thick and juicy as the 6 ouncers. The fries are and onion rings are good too. If you want a piece of pie, this is a good place to go because they have a variety of different pies for desert. That about sums up the New Way menu. It has a limited menu that ensures that there's a lot of turnover of the few things they serve, which means that the food is always fresh. Came out of the woods and this was my first stop for hot food. I was itching for a treat after eating freeze dried crap and cliff bars for three days straight. At first I was put off by the decor which does not look bad just not what I was envisioning for my first hot meal whilst getting rained on. I am very glad that we ate here however as it was a great experience all around. The service was quick, attentive and charming; I don't think I ever got to the bottom of my coffee mug which got refilled many times. They made a fresh pot for us which we quickly drained. The food was great, simple, diner food. Nothing fancy here, they keep it simple but are very good at what they do. While I am not a fan of hotdogs, I got one after hearing from almost everyone in the town that they are the best. They certainly lived up to the hype! The flavors of the mustard, onions, and oh-so-good meat sauce combined together into something truly special. Next up was the dessert which consisted of different types of pies and scones. The very berry pie was very good, and they had a selection of about 6 different types. The best thing about this place is the price however, we came in with a group of seven hungry campers and our bill ended up in the mid 50's. Unfortunately, New Way Lunch's original location is no longer open, which saddens me greatly. Fortunately, the formula for success is still in place. All you need to do is say "3 with the works" and you're on your way to hot dog heaven. Now, there are other good hotdog places in and around Glens Falls, but absolutely none of them holds a candle to New Way (or, as many of the other reviewers have called it, "Dirty John's." My grandmother (who is now 70) recalls going there when she was 5 or 6, and having the local patrons tease her about eating her hot dog before the cockroaches took it away. She still loves a dog with the works once and a while. One serious note: Absolutely, under NO circumstances, leave any of these in the box in your car (especially in the summer time). Often times the simplicity of a good dog and cheese drenched fries does the trick for me. New Way Lunch is a little piece of history in Glens Falls. Since 1919 this little staple of Downtown Glens Falls has been filling the stomachs of late night drunkies, college students, and hungry on-the-goers. There are two locations for Dirty Johns. One is on Bay Rd, and the other on South st. (the more popular one for drunks after hours). Again, I'm with my close friend, Evan. He visits his home town every now and then when he needs a dose of reality from the dream that is Philadelphia. He also has a checklist of food places he likes to visit when he comes home - a routine almost. On that list is of course New Way Lunch. Dirty Johns has always held a special place in my heart - mostly in the form of fatty tissue. I volunteered to be Evan's company for this trip because of the tasty treats involved. New Way Lunch looks like a run down shack that was there before the rest of the buildings around it. It's a time capsule of Glens Falls. If you weren't looking for it, you probably couldn't find it. An ominous black and white sign with a boring standard font, is the only thing visible from the road that would tell you to slam on your brakes and make a quick turn into the parking lot. The inside atmosphere is pleasant, though dingy. Everything is old. I like it. There is even a juke box at every table. Ordering is simple, number of dogs; sauce only, mustard only, onions only, or the works, followed by any sides you might want. I ordered two with no onions and a side of cheese fries and a Pepsi. The dogs are fried on a flat top griddle, and served the same way since 1919. The sauce is like that of none other - a wonderful blend of potent spices and thick meaty goodness smothers the dog to turn an otherwise flavorless puree of tubed meat into a pallet pleasing monstrosity. Ketchup is frowned upon. I can immediately taste several familiar spices, I'm guessing: nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, black pepper, and.... well I can't figure the rest out but suffice to say it has a sweetness to it as well. The fries, smothered in cheese-wiz are a wonderful, artery clogging side to the dogs, as the dogs are not very filling. I could easily have consumed a half dozen if I didn't order the fries. As I sat in an almost comatose state after my meal, I began to think of all the time I'll need to spend at the gym working off this one meal. I do love the food though. It's the simple things I like in life. Those dogs would go great with a cold beer, which is why I can see them being the perfect drunk food. Nothing but pleasure comes to mind, when thinking of snapping into one of these delicate beauties. I would recommend anyone to try this at least once in their lives. My dad started going to The New Way Lunch when he was just a kid in the 1920's when "John" was still there. We were raised on "dirts" as we called them. (but not around dad - he thought that was very disrespectful) When we used to go there as teens in the 70's the "Johnny Hots" as my dad called them were 60 cents a piece! They are now $1.40, I think? One of the few things that I know of that hasn't tripled ot quadrupled in my lifetime. For the reviewer who was't a fan of the mustard and preferred "spicy brown" over yellow.... The spicy brown would mask the sauce and that would ruin the dog. They've changed a little over the years (less hot dog, more bun) but they still taste like a little piece of heaven. That pot that the sauce comes out of (in the South St location) is the original that John himself used. I've heard that it's never been washed, but even if it hasn't I'd never be able to give up those dirts! It used to be open 24 hours or at least 23 when I was growing up but started closing down (still pretty late) earlier back in the 90's. Oh the memories I have of that place! This simple yet satisfying diner is what everyone raves about in the area. Famous for their hotdogs, and for good reason! The buns are steamed and the dogs are grilled to perfection. When my Dad was in the Navy, when he would visit home he would buy several dozen hot dogs with "the works" and bring them back to Norfolk with him. When my husband was on leave from Afghanistan the first place he want to stop was at New way! We prefer the location by Aviation mall instead of south street due to the waitress being nicer and it's much bigger. I always get 2 hotdogs with nacho cheese and an order of onion rings to share. Hello to all that love dirt dogs. This is as close to the real thing as I can get. Dirty Johns Sauce 1 Lb Hamburg 2 Med Onions, Minced Cook really brown and fine Add 1 Qt Water 1 Tbsp Beef Base or 3 Bouillon Cubes 2 Level Tsp Tomato Paste Add 1/2 Tsp Each: Chili Powder Paprika Celery Salt Garlic Powder Cumin Ginger Cinnamon Salt Pepper Add 1/4 Tsp Each: Nutmeg Cloves Bring to boil, reduce heat to simmer and cook 8 hrs. Note: When making a double batch add 1 Tsp of each spice but still only 1/2 Tsp of Nutmeg and 1/4 Tsp of Cloves and 1 Qt of qater. Cook in crock pot so that you don't have to watch all day. It's always been Dirty Johns since I was a kid. As many people know it to be named so, not so many folks know why. Its not for the owner, or the hot dogs served up. Decades ago the man slopping on the secret sauces name was John. John had a reputation for being, well, dirty. He would line up the dogs the length of his arm to quickly with precision scoop the sauce onto each dog. Hence the dogs themselves got to be called Dirty Johns Dirt Dogs. The owners of New Way Lunch themselves have never liked this and would probably be happy if they never were called dirt dogs, or dirt sticks in the first place. The Queensbury location is nowhere near as "authentic" as the downtown one... Which I imagine is nowhere near as dirty as it was in the 90's when it was always filled with cigarette smoke. read more
