I was looking for lunch while my hubby visited Kaiser. Stumbled on to this little hole in the wall. Honestly not much to look at but the lady at the front was genuinely lovely. I ordered the vegetarian sandwich without cheese. She asked if I wanted mayo, as she thought I might want a vegan sandwich. "Nope, mayo fine, just no cheese". When you have a sandwich with only lettuce, tomato, avocado and carrot you have little to hide behind. The bread was fresh and delicious, toasted well. The filling for me was perfect. The cafe is small but clean. And later when hubby was free he came and ordered pastrami. His sandwich was also great. Did I mention the bread was bomb? Slept overnight at the Kaiser hospital. Woke up hungry asfk, and this spot was open early. I got the chicken pesto and lemme tell you, the portion size is huge for the price. It was great to finally be able to get my daughter authentic fresh chicken shawarma, unlike the dry chicken curry masquerading as shawarma at California Adventure two weeks earlier! The chicken shawarma here is made with the freshest ingredients! I even ate the tomatoes, and I don't even like tomatoes! The cucumbers had just the right amount of crunch! It was so delicious, I ate the whole thing in one sitting! My son's large pepperoni pizza was just as delicious! He ate half all by himself!...then polished off the rest when we got home! Zero expectations, only saw that they had great Yelp reviews. Got myself a sandwich and a coffee. And oh. my. god. It was divine. Freshly baked bread, delicious taste, great texture and a decent portion size. Just yummy! And the coffee? I got plain black coffee and boy, was it good. Strong enough, but not too bitter. If you drink your coffee without creamers and sweeteners you will know how unusual it is to find high-quality, great tasting coffee for a reasonable price. I recently moved to the area and found New York Cafe on DoorDash. I've ordered a few times now and really enjoy the kofte sandwich combo which comes with the side of your choice. I opt for the thick cut fries that come perfectly crispy with a nice seasoning salt on top. The sandwich itself is huge, I can't really imagine considering what you get one sandwich. You'll most likely be satisfied going for half, so in terms of size it's a very good deal at just over $12 all in. The kofte is a ground beef kabob that fits nicely in the sandwich almost like a burger patty. It's not fancy, comes with lettuce, tomatoes, and mayo, but it's very tasty. I only have gone for lunch, so I can't comment on any other time of day. I typically order the regular steak sandwich or chimichurri steak sandwich , side salad and drink. The sandwich is tasty, the bread is delicious ( flat bread , crispy Israeli bread?) and the portion size is perfect. I've also had a flavorful chicken soup. They have a good selection chips and drinks.
