We should have known when during a Friday lunch rush it was half empty, with empty tables having order numbers hanging with nothing at the tables to show for it. Other people were walking out due to the wait. They couldn't even nuke my Mac and cheese till all of the cheese was melted. My friend's Mac and cheese was done, but a bit burnt on the cheese. Overall super subpar. Not sure what the heck happened to the place. I hope Newk's hasn't become this bad. It used to be pretty nice. Is this Mac and cheese worth $12? I thought this was a great place. My husband liked his Italian sandwich and coleslaw. I really liked my kids Mac and cheese and that I could order from the kid's menu. The service was very good As well. The iced tea was good. I felt overwhelmed by the choices. The only thing I did not like was that I had no spoon and had to ask for one. I thought the peanut butter rice Krispy treat was delicious. I would come back shalf sandwich, blueberry salad and the kids pizza. The staff was very helpful here. Once on my way to Fredericksburg, I stopped at Silver K Cafe in Johnson City, where I ordered a caesar salad with steak on it (they no longer offer this combination). What I got was a thick, juicy steak, sliced, on delicious greens with awesome croutons. Looking at Newk's online menu earlier, I saw that I could get a caesar salad with steak added on. Perfect! My mouth watered just thinking about it! What I got was a caesar salad with cold roast beef. I tried taking a few pictures, but they turned out badly. However, I attached a picture of Newk's roast beef/provolone sammy, and the meat you see in that picture is exactly what was on my salad today. I even asked a manager if someone made a mistake, but she swore it was steak and not roast beef. This "steak" looked and tasted exactly like roast beef to me. The manager even admitted at one point, "Well, it's possible the chef grabbed roast beef instead, but that looks like steak to me." Okay, you saying that there was a possibility she could've grabbed roast beef by mistake, but earlier and later saying it's definitely steak, doesn't wash. There is no way in hell there was an actual steak on my salad. She told me I could request the "steak" be heated next time, but what's the point? I mean, it's still roast beef. I like roast beef, but when I pay for steak I expect to get steak. You accurately called it roast beef in the sandwich portion of your menu, so why are you lying in the salad portion? Did you think people wouldn't figure it out? That they would simply accept it? Not me, sister. -- Or, am I the only one who doesn't think "roast beef" and "steak" are synonymous? -- The part that pisses me off the most is that I was upcharged $4 for this roast beef. Newks has become my favorite go-to lunch spot when I am working in the Arboretum area. I have eaten here once a week since they opened and everything has been fresh and tasty. I love a good salad and their salads are huge, beautiful and delicious. The shrimp salad is mixed greens and sweet grape tomatoes topped with boiled eggs and grilled shrimp with a yummy remoulade dressing. The Caesar salad is also very good and comes with choice of grilled chicken , shrimp or salmon. My favorite so far is the super thin crust spicy shrimp pizza - shrimp on a pizza oh yeah with red and yellow bell peppers and red chilis! My Veggie Girl raved about her Vegetarian Club Portabella sandwich and another friend loves the Pesto Chicken sandwich. Conveniently planted between a quick trip to Sephora and Trader Joes, I found myself wondering what all the line fuss was about outside of Newk's, so I jumped in line and pulled up their menu on my phone. Service sucked that day, I'm sorry, but it did and I almost never feel so turned off by service that I will consider it a part of the overall rating. Almost everyone makes me smile, I've been referred to as a giggle monster on multiple occasions, and all three of the employees I interacted with that day were rather disgruntled, but the guy who took my order was downright surly and disinterested. I ordered the Black & Blue salad ($8.50) described as "Mixed greens, choice beef tender, Gorgonzola cheese, pecans, grape tomatoes and sliced red onion tossed with Newk's Bleu Cheese dressing." Sounds great. However these weren't the most hydrated greens, the thin slices of roast beef were dull, and neither the gorgonzola or bleu cheese was recognizable. I wasn't totally offended by the salad, but it fell so flat, as if it had been prepared the day before. I did like their sweet tea sweetened with splenda! Whenever my pal Miss Sugarbaker happens to throw a dinner party, he always requests I stop off here to pick up Caesar salad dressing. Forget Paul Newman, any chef from the Food Network, or even your mom's recipe; apparently, Newk's harbors the Holy Grail of purchasable Caesar dressing, and not a salad has been made by him without utilizing this precious commodity. The first time I stopped by, I remember they gave me the dressing for free. The second and third times, having probably caught on to the laws of supply and demand, they charged a couple bucks. I never know what size to get, but suffice it to say, I recall being bitched out for presenting him with too little AND too much, so I really can't win at this game. The passive-aggressive side of me wants to simply buy a one-time oil drum-sized barrel of the stuff, and dump it off at his place and hope he has a refrigerator large enough to save it. And then I'd never have to hear about it again. But I still love him. I had never paused to actually eat at the restaurant until last week when Miss Sugarbaker was in my 'hood and was taking a lunch break during one of his salon visits. We were going to engage in a quick coordination of the weekend's plans; not surprisingly, he suggested Newk's. The place is cute, nestled somewhere in between Saks Fifth Avenue and Sephora, so I'm guessing it draws in the "ladies who shop" crowd who haven't completely abandoned the Arboretum in favor of the Domain. Actually, judging by the people, it seems to attract a robust lunch crowd for anyone and everyone who may work in the area. Newk's offers standard lunch fare that includes sandwiches, pizza, salads, etc. Nothing that'll blow your culinary mind, but it's light and serves a purpose. As a side note, I really suggest they stop using the phrase "freshly tossed salads" on their menu. You can probably guess why. You stand in line and order at the front register, which at this time seemed manned by the manager, or perhaps even the owner. Miss Sugarbaker ordered a half-sandwich and salad combo deal, and I followed suit. We both had the Italian (capicola, mortadella, pepperoni, salami, provolone cheese, mayo, spicy Creole mustard, lettuce, tomato, yellow onions, hot sliced cherry peppers and Italian sauce) sandwich and (what else?) the Caesar salad. We were given numbers and sat down at the table. Drinks are self-serve, and since I was ridiculously parched, I'm pretty sure I cleaned them out of their unsweetened iced tea. Silverware and salad additions sit on a tiered glass table next to the drinks. I'm sooooo not a fan of this self-serve nonsense, but at least the process is user-friendly. The sandwich was alright. Not really sure what else to say about it. The Caesar could have used croutons, but apparently I was supposed to add those myself at the aforementioned station. I'm not going to give details, but at that point I was texting someone and while waiting for their response, I was too paralyzed by nerves, fear, and anticipation that the act of getting off my ass to add croutons was about as likely as me climbing Mt. Everest. I also had flashbacks to being forced to make my own Bloody Mary at the Park at the Domain. Basically, I don't function well without waiters. I did notice the manager/owner ask a couple refilling their teas how their meal was, and they seemed pretty enthusiastic about it. So, that was nice. At first I thought the place was local, but a cursory review of their website reveals they are a franchise business with a presence in such places as Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia, i.e., most of the Old Confederacy. In Texas, they have locations in Waco, College Station, and Longview, i.e., cities I never want to linger in for more than 5 minutes. Oh well. The meal was a *tad* pricey, especially for just a 1/2 sandwich and salad. I'm seeing the word "catering" a lot from other reviewers, and I can see how Newk's would fill that need nicely. As for an individual sit down lunch, there are just so many more options out there. Unless it was suggested again or I was forced to eat lunch there at gunpoint, in all honesty, Newk's would be lost in the shuffle during the consideration of potential lunch joints. But, of course, I'll most likely be in for the Caesar dressing again. I just have to convince Miss Sugarbaker it's time for another dinner party. 3 Stars. read more

The real show-stopper was the topping bar, the pickled garlic really took my sandwich up through the roof. I enjoy the pecans in the Cobb, and everything on the ultimate, however my favorite at the moment is the Shrimp Remoulade. So, I went to Newks for the first time earlier this week on the recommendation of a co worker and my friend and I both agreed that it was overpriced for what it is. The place is very popular at lunch time, so be forewarned if you want to go at noon. I had the 1/2 grilled steak sandwich and cup of loaded potato soup. The soup was really good with a cheesy potato flavor. The sandwich was good, but the portion of steak seemed a little light. It had grilled steak, caramelized onions, provolone cheese and a horseradish sauce. The sauce had a very faint horseradish flavor. If you don't like any horseradish heat, this sauce is for you since it's mainly just a creamy sauce to add some moisture to the steak. Horrible service and experience. Stay as far away from this place as possible. My order (placed online and correct on receipt) was made completely wrong. My sandwich had an ingredient on it I specified on the online order to be removed which I have an allergic reaction to. In addition, the mac and cheese they gave me was completely cold. I took my order back only for them to tell me there was a "problem" with the over to heat the premade Mac and cheese (so much for being fresh!) and after requesting a refund and waiting for over 10 minutes there was a "problem" with the computer keeping me from being able to be refunded. U can also add or subtract ingredirents. You can also order half portions which is plenty for lunch or split one with friend. Make sure you ask them to "toss your salad" with dressing. The cup of soup was pretty decent but the side of pasta salad was kinda lame. It was a really small 2 ounce ramekin. The pasta salad was actually a huge let down. There was no flavor to it no little extras in there. Most pasta salads have a nice vinaigrette dressing or something similar. But the pasta here doesn't so it was just eating cold chewy pasta. Which sucks because I love pasta salad. My soup was piping hot when I got it so that is a plus. Can't not have a soup the day after Austin freezes over and closes. The soup had a nice texture, was runny or thin. There was a good amount of vegetables and chicken and the flavor was pretty good overall. I was expecting it to be a little spicy since its gumbo but it wasn't at all. No points deducted thou because gumbo doesn't automatically mean spicy. The sandwich was assembled perfectly which is a relief as a lot of places can't assemble a sandwich or burger. The meat to bun to condiment was actually really good as well. I could taste all the items and they came together very well. The honey mustard was awesome, they have a great honey mustard. The only basd part of my sandwich was the tomatoes. It was probably one from the bottom of the half pan in the cooler so it was actually slightly frozen or something. No worries really thou just gave the sandwich a strange texture and taste on certain bites. But overall the food was pretty good. Overall - a decent eatery if you want a sandwich or salad. They have lots of options and choices. But there wasn't anything that stood out from the rest except the condiment table. It is actually really cool what they offer. My meal was a little over $18. While I was satisfied with my purchase, for me it wasn't work that much. Mostly based on portion size and my side was very bland. But don't get me wrong, the food was good. Newk's has my favorite pizza! It's a nice size personal pizza with lots of cheese and a really thin crust. I also love all of the soups I've had there. It's so easy to order and the food comes out pretty quickly. The staff was all really nice and helpful as well. read more

My aunt showed me this place years ago, it has always been one of my favorite places. Usually when I make a new friend I suggest to go here. They all love it, & continue to go. I have never experienced bad customer service here, but I've realized that nobody has customer service like Tyler. He has great customer service skills, & seems to go the extra mile for customers. When they are on their game, they are great. The problem is it's hit and miss knowing when they are going to get an entire order correct or when they are going to care. Great iced tea and condiments are among the only things consistent with Newk's. Is that enough of a reason to keep returning to play "let's get my order right?" Probably not. read more

Just arrived in Austin and staying at the Renaissance hotel. Looked for a place to have a quick bite with varied menu ( 17 year olds in tow) and found Newk's !!! Food was fresh and delicious .., the boys had pizza and we had a chicken salad sandwich with a bleu and black salad ... Erica took our order and served us ... She was delightful and made the experience even more enjoyable. Would definitely return to sample more. read more
