This place is an old Eugene gem and has been in Eugene since 1890! I love that the walk up window is so convenient and fast. We love coming here in the summertime, but we popped in last night and it reminded me to give them a mention. Their fish 'n chips are really good and they keep their prices surprisingly low: $11 for cod and $13 for salmon. The salmon is my favorite and both options include fries and sauces. Their portions are filling , but if you wanted, you could add another piece of cod for $3, salmon for $3.75...or cole slaw for $2.25! There are many other options, too: shrimp Louie, clam chowder, grilled halibut or salmon, coconut shrimp, rockfish and sandwiches with any of the above! The only downside is that there isn't really a vibe, ambiance or atmosphere to speak of, (seating outside next to a parking lot), but if you're hankering for some fresh fish 'n chips to go, this is your place! read more

There are a handful of good seafood places to choose from in Eugene, but this one is my favorite. It's smaller and feels more like a neighborhood shop than the fisherman's market, in my opinion. They have a variety of options for their fish and chips, from salmon to scallops to halibut and shrimp, so there is always something new to try. Most of the fish and chips options are around $8, but it's generally always under $12 and you get a very decent portion with a side like coleslaw or fries. Overall, it's very good quality at a very reasonable price! They also have a fish market inside where you can purchase not only fresh seafood but also specialty and gourmet cheeses. In addition, they have various specialty oils and vinegars, jams and sauces, so if you're having a date night at home or throwing a party and need some nibbles you should make a pit stop here. Also located inside is a seating area if you are dining in and it's cold outside (since they also have an outdoor patio). And if you're not ready for the night to be over, head on over to Bierstein and grab a drink or two. Really, you can't go wrong here! read more

Okay so my husband had this on his list of places to go in Eugene. We arrived about 30 minutes before closing and usually I just have a rule about going to restaurants an hour before they close. But anyways we decided to go anyway. The menu is simple which I liked! I ordered the fish and chips (cod), scallops, and coconut shrimp. All of the meat seemed to be over cooked. The cod was kind of dry, the breading on the scallops just fell off, and the coconut shrimp although overcooked was in my opinion the tastiest. My husband enjoyed his salmon and chips. My kids liked their shrimp and chips. The fries were delicious and customer service was excellent. If you want to try this place my suggestion would be not to go before they close! read more

A great spot for fish lovers! The seafood is always fresh and amazing! Not many options besides fish however so if your not into seafood this place isn't for you. The service is great, but the food has gone downhill in the past 6 months. In the past the fish was lightly battered and generous portions. Now our last 2 experiences have been disappointing; thick dark brown batter, less fish cooked in old oil. The cole slaw was very soggy. But the french fries were OK. This was a recommendation I found on Eater. I was skeptical and tired from my long drive (Redding to Eugene). The menu is small and concise, which I prefer from restaurants. Ordered the shrimp and fries. The shrimp was cooked perfectly. Crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. The tartar sauce just took it to the moon. This is an update on their outdoor dining. While the fish inside is still fresh and a great selection, we were very disappointed in the outdoor dining. Maybe they have a new cook or are trying to conserve but the fish (cod) & chips were nasty. They had obviously been cooked in old oil and the fried oysters were really bad. Heavy breading and so overcooked. Didn't even taste like oysters also in nasty oil. I will stick with Fisherman's for my fried fish and Provisions for the oysters from now on. read more

Delicious!! I ordered 2 pieces of cod and a cup of clam chowder. Both were wonderful. I would've loved to have tried the fries and coleslaw...next time. There will be a next time. First food stop in Eugene and it certainly set the bar high. In the front there is a seafood market with all kinds of seafood that made me want to spend a ton of money shipping it home. The "restaurant" is what I would describe as a food stand on the side that kicks out some of the freshest fish and chips EVER! It was cool to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful weather and commune with the locals as they were all to happy to tell us we made a great choice to eat. So way to go Newman's! A+! I had the halibut, and my guy had the red snapper. I tried a bite of his food, and wow! Amazing! I can't say that I like Newman's any better than Fisherman's market because I don't. I really like them both, and her is why. I think I like the halibut fish n chips better here, but I was not a fan of the oniony taste I got in each bite of tarter sauce here. I don't get that at the fisherman's market. Also at the fisherman's market you have a selection of different flavored tarter sauce. I didn't notice that here. I don't necessarily like cocktail sauce with my fish, unless it is shrimp. I remember going to Newman's with my Mom when I was a little kid. I love Newman's. It's the epitome of a local, long standing Eugene business. It's a great market serving fresh seafood but has also become a very popular lunch/dinner spot in recent history as well. Unsurprisingly, their fish chips are amazing and well-priced given the quality and freshness when compared with some others around town. They have a couple locations and I usually frequent the one on Willamette. Grabbing some beers to go from Bier Stein then hopping across the parking lot to get some fish and chips to go makes for a pretty spectacular (albeit horribly unhealthy) meal. read more

First time to The Grotto location and I will for sure be back. Everything was spot on starting with customer service, price, quality and taste. It was a busy Friday afternoon but we were able to order and receive freshly cooked food in under 15 minutes. I ordered the grilled salmon which was accompanied by coleslaw and rice $9, I asked for no rice double coleslaw which was happily fulfilled. The salmon was perfectly cooked and had just the right amount of seasoning. The coleslaw was crunchy and dressed lightly with a creamy slightly sweet dressing. Hands down best fried fish/seafood I've ever had. It's not battered like the typical English style, it's super crunchy and just a thin coating. For being so affordable I was really shocked at how fresh it all was! The cod is delicious but the surprises winner for me was the fried salmon. Why isn't every fried fish place frying salmon??? It's amazing! It's a must try! The fried scallops were also out of this world. The batter is so light it doesn't overpower the food and you can still taste the fish. Don't forget the slaw and fries, both were fresh and delicious! Their menu is set up perfectly for the person who doesn't want to commit. For two of us we got the 3 piece cod that comes with slaw or fries, and then added on a single piece of salmon and two scallops and all of that was only $15. Fried to order.
