I grew up on Friendly's. When I moved to North Carolina, the opened up a Friendly's in the town I was living and no other restaurant was a comfort like that place so far from my New England home. But they are pretty much gone, save a very endangered few. The good news is that Newport Creamery scratches that nostalgia itch. Stopped by here today, we wanted a quick meal before leaving town / heading to the airport. I'm a fan of Newport Creamery, having grown up partially on the East Coast, but my fiance had never been. The mozzarella sticks grilled cheese sounded too tempting to resist, so we split that and the Vermonster. The mozz one was pretty good but the Vermonster was just okay; I didn't taste any syrup as advertised. We also got two Awful Awfuls - his was choco-nut and mine was peanut butter. I liked both but his was better. We also got sweet potato fries and onion rings for sides - the rings were good, the fries needed salt or something. It was about $50 with tip for all of that which seemed pricey, but both entrees were like $13 (the sides were premium and were extra), and each Awful Awful was like $7.50 each too. I noticed a few people just eating ice cream and that's a good option for this restaurant as well, just going for dessert. The Newport Creamery has a rich history. The company's roots date back to 1928 when Samuel Rector, who was already in the milk business, took over a dairy on Van Zandt Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island and became a wholesale milk distributor. Four years later, in 1932, Mason Rector (Samuel's son) joined the business. That year, the Company also entered the retail business when it began to deliver milk house-to-house on Acquidneck Island In 1940, the Rectors opened what was described as a "Milk Bar", serving ice cream. The location of this "Milk Bar" is the exact location of the Company's flagship restaurant and plant - 208 West Main Road in Middletown, Rhode Island. not sure what happened there today but it was the worst possible experience I've ever had there. Took my grand daughters to lunch today - we went in and it took about 5 minutes to get seated - they sat us at a dirty table and then seemed put of when we asked for the table to be cleaned. that took another 5 minutes. Then we sat for 15 minutes and no one came over - no communication - nothing - like we were invisible - We got up and went to leave then we were told I was coming right over - too late unfortunately - the pre service as non existent - didn't want to take a chance at that point to se just ho much worse it could get. My aunt came in from California and her whole order was a catastrophe. She is allergic to nuts and they over cooked her burger. This is not good if she has a reaction we will be taking legal actions against this Newport Creamery. The waitress was very confused to take a coffee ice cream and bring maple walnut. There were only 3 tables full, my table being one of them, and yet service was painfully slow with at least 3 employees working. Ordered a 4 scoop sundae to share with my husband and a cup of coffee. Ice cream was dropped off with the bill and no coffee. Nobody came to check on us or collect the payment. Ice cream tasted artificial and cloyingly sweet. Tasted like the cheapest ice cream from the grocery store. I finally went to the front to pay and asked for the coffee to be removed from the bill. Food fair, expected it to be slow, and it was, but then it sat at the counter ready to be picked up by our waiter for 10 minutes, my brother in law could see it from where he was sitting. A local comfort-food stop...at least five times a week...breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Sometimes more than one meal on the same day! As a child my family and I would visit the Garden City location strictly for icecream. Moving to Gaspee Plateau as a young mom, and later to Lakekwood, the Gov. Francis location became our favorite. I have had nothing but positive experiences. Sure there can be a wait during those crazy busy summer hours. Maybe my English muffin isn't perfect 100% of the time, or the coffee isn't magically filled every 10 seconds...none of that matters. Three generations of my family have made the Creamery "our" restaurant because of the PEOPLE who serve us, the people we have met there along the way, and the together time we have spent on those green vinyl seats over MANY years. My two adult children have fond "burger and ice cream" memories, and my adult grandchildren still smile when the Creamery is mentioned...sometimes it's an all-out laugh! One of my granddaughters, as a little girl, insisted it was the Portmore Creamy! She's now 20 and still chooses to refer to it that way...and we chuckle when she does. Went to Newport Creamery today with my meals on wheels voucher, I guess that still are not treating the elderly right, I ordered a soup and half sandwich, which was on my menu that I was given from the meals on wheels, they said they only had chowder and chili , so I said I will have a cup of chowder, and a tuna sandwich, then the waitress came back and said to me, you can't have the chowder, or the chili because it cost more money, and you can't get it with your voucher, which I purchased, and the manager kept saying to the waitress chowder is not soup, and chili is not soup. A rather small Newport Creamery and sort of dumpy looking from the outside. I got the impression that the place has seen better days. However the food was good, or at least as good as any Newport Creamery gets. In fact the Awful Awful's were especially think and creamy and the ice cream excellent. What really made this Newport Creamery stand out was the service. The waitress was incredibly nice without being phony or saccharine sounding. Perhaps she was bored because no one else was in the place but she definitely made our visit as pleasant as possible without being intrusive. That alone is worth 4 stars. read more

On May 3, I had lunch at the Newport Creamery in North Kingstown RI with a friend. We were seated by the hostess/ server who promptly took our order. I ordered the chicken patty sandwich. Hi, I visited the Newport Creamery off of Warwick ave in Warwick Today 7/17/20. I ordered three different meals from the menu for take out. I went inside the store to pay for the items but I notice a women came inside the store with a open container of food which was the wrong order. The manager than realized that she gave my order away to a different customer. The manager took the order from the other customer and put it in my bag with my other orders. It was very nauseating to see the manager of the store trying to give me an order that was given and examined by other customer who than later took into her car. I was appalled by the managers lack of safety during the COVID-19 pandemic. I asked the manager to please remove the item that was returned by another customer out of my bag and to please make a new order. I felt very upset that I had to witness the manager taking those actions right in front of my eyes. Let me start by saying, my server was great. The atmosphere was good. I give this location (it's the only one I've been to, so far) 2 stars, because they really should stick with JUST ice cream. I ordered loaded fries. The menu said, covered with bacon and melted cheese. It was NOT melted cheese. It was that crappy cheese sauce. The cheese sauce had been sitting long enough to develop "pudding skin." I know this because, the "skin" was on top of my fries. I also ordered the smoked cheddar bbq cheese burger. It came on toast, sliced in half. Most of the burger was in 1 half, so it was like eating half a grilled cheese and onion sandwich. The coffee was decent. The ice cream was delicious. The food was mediocre. If you're looking for a good burger, go somewhere else. If you're looking for good Ice cream, this is the place.
