The Lunch Special was really special. They didn't reserve this menu for unpopular items. I got exactly the three dishes I was craving for under $30. Shared with a friend, so that came out to $5 an entree!!! It really took me back to my childhood in a very specifically Vietnamese way that pho and banh mi doesn't due to well-deserved popularity and accessibility. Try the canh chua, ca kho, and rau muong. This was a really solid Vietnamese restaurant with generous portions and fresh ingredients. The restaurant itself is spacious, casual, and clean, with plenty of seating. It's definitely more of a comfortable, no-frills neighborhood spot than a fancy dining experience, which I actually enjoyed. We tried a couple of different dishes. The noodle soup came out piping hot with a clear, flavorful broth, plenty of noodles, green onions, and large pieces of meat. I especially appreciated the huge plate of fresh herbs, bean sprouts, lime, chives, and jalapeños that came alongside it. The vermicelli bowl was probably the standout. It was absolutely loaded with grilled meat, crispy egg rolls, crushed peanuts, green onions, cucumber, and pickled vegetables. The meat had some nicely caramelized edges, and there was a great mix of textures and flavors in every bite. Portions were definitely not skimpy! Overall, the food was fresh, filling, and satisfying, the restaurant was clean and comfortable, and there was a large menu with plenty to choose from. Service was quick. Located in the Lion Plaza, most Bay Area Viet kids grew up coming here. Parking usually isn't bad, I never have issues finding a spot. When we walked in, the floor was sticky and the place smelled strongly of cleaning products. We used to come here when I was a kid and my dad really wanted to come back. It was pretty busy inside, most of the tables were full, and there was still outside seating. We were seated inside. I ordered the com ga hai nam, my parents order bun thit nuong. Their bowls were huge! I didn't take photos but neither of them finished their bun because the portions were so big. I ordered the com ga hai nam, and the server didn't bring me any soup, which usually comes standard with any com ga hai nam. I mentioned it to my dad about half way through my meal and he flagged down a waiter to ask. The waiter went to get it right away, noting that we were right and he forgot. The soup was nothing to write home about, just seemed like the generic soup you usually get with com tam. The com ga hai nam was decent, I liked the sauce that came with it and appreciated the amount of veggies. Nha Trang was pretty average. We came here for lunch on a weekday with a large party, and we ordered 2 of the meal packages that came with 3 items and rice, which is $29.95. We also ordered a few dishes on the side. We ended up ordering the sour soup with catfish and sour soup with shrimp, catfish clay pot, Chinese broccoli w/oyster sauce, and veggie w/garlic sauce. The sour soup with catfish and shrimp were simple, but both solid in flavor. The fish and shrimp were cooked perfectly. The catfish clay pot was very flavorful, and as I would expect. The Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce and veggie with garlic sauce were cooked perfectly, and also tasted as expected. There was an abundance of white rice with the meal packages. We actually ended up taking it home. The salted fish fried rice was really good, in that it had crispy pieces (probably the salted fish), and had a bit of a char flavor that I generally like. At the end, they gave us all a little cold dessert that had grass jelly and basil seeds/chia seeds. Service was friendly. It was mostly an older gentleman, who was very kind and accommodating. Tried this venue for lunch, on the recommendation of a friend when I was in the area on a weekday. Apparently this family-owned restaurant has been around for quite a long time, and is a staple in the San Jose Vietnamese community for atleast a generation. We ordered the 3 entree lunch special (family style meal) which is only $30. We got to choose a soup choice, meat entree, and vegetable entree. We opted for canh chua (hot/sweet and sour soup with fish), ca kho (stewed/braised fish in a savory caramel sauce), and sauteed seasonal veggies in garlic (we chose ong choy / water spinach / rau muong). It was a very satisfying and well seasoned meal. I liked the combination of 3 dishes. The food was comforting and felt like I was eating at a family member or friend's house. Service was friendly and prompt. There's atleast 10 tables that seat 4 people each inside. Will definitely return to try other dishes next time I am back in the San Jose area. Vermicelli grill pork bowl was on point! Had everything you would want in a vermicelli bowl, everything was fresh. I expected the salt and pepper fish fillet the be cut up pieces of fish fried. They were tiny pieces so you mainly taste batter and little fish. read more

I actually really liked the portions and components of this meal. He said it was under $18 which I think is a fair price. Perfect chew on the noodles. They are well known for the nem nướng that we roll ourselves, the sour soups ( canh chua ) with fish or with prawns, the clams with basil.... Too many good dishes to remember. Service is friendly and on point. Parking is plentiful since this is a trip mall, brightly lit at night. Yum! I was craving house special lobster and saw that people on yelp really liked the lobster here, so I had to check it out. The food: - house special lobster - lots of meat, very tender, and the sauce was sooooo good. I was disappointed with Hủ Tiếu Sài Gòn, nothing special about it. The owner advertised it on Facebook as it's excellent. There's only one shrimp and a few slices of pork with red color around and a few small pieces of calamari. The sauce tasted salty and looked like it's a combination of soy sauce and red vinegar. It really ruined the taste of this rice noodle bowl. They advertised it as discount price, only 15.90 and they wouldn't take credit card for it. With $16, you can buy food at the regular price somewhere else, here they acted like they were losing money for giving me that price. read more

I don't usually write reviews, but I had such an excellent experience today and so I just had to Came here for lunch and ordered canh chua cá, cá kho tộ, rau muống, and bò lúc lắc. Everything was delicious, but the shaking beef was the standout. The beef was incredibly tender and tasted like very high-quality meat. I wasn't expecting fries to come with the shaking beef, not sure if that's normal for shaking beef They also gave us complimentary pickled cabbage, and at the end, each of us got a complimentary dessert -- chè with grass jelly and basil seeds. Such a nice high quality free dessert that we weren't even expecting What really impressed me was when I went to pay. The cashier told me that the tip was already included, but my Vietnamese isn't very good and I didn't fully understand her, so I left a tip anyway. She noticed and actually gave the tip back to me in cash. I wouldn't have even realized it, but she went out of her way to make sure I wasn't accidentally overcharged. That level of honesty is rare and really says a lot about this restaurant. Service was excellent too. We kept asking for little things -- extra rice, forks/utensils, ketchup, a plastic lid for the baby's cup -- and they brought everything out without hesitation. The only thing that made me a little sad was seeing the restaurant fairly empty on a Saturday around 1 PM. This place has been around for many years, and I really hope they stay around! Maybe they get a lot of takeout orders that's keeping them in business. My family orders their canh chua cá bông lau to-go pretty often. The food here is delicious 10/10. Their service however is absolutely disappointing. I order their food to-go regularly. When you come to pick up the food, don't expect the employees to welcome you. They'll tell you to go pay at the counter and then wait for the food. Their cashiering is also very deceptive. I had a fresh 3lb lobster for $120. It was seasoned perfectly, and there was so much meat to eat! I can say the best lobster that I had in awhile. To accompany the lobster, we ordered the garlic noodles, which they charge $3/ person. Kind of skimpy amount, and there should have been a large plate. First time doing a Togo order here. Asked for cooked, but got raw fish. Called to place an order, and the phone was being pass around for someone to take it. The best Vietnamese seafood and roll place around. All the seafood is fresh and comes with wonderful herbs. My favorites were the clams with punchy lemongrass and the chicken or beef salad. The chicken salad (not pictured) came with so much chicken it was ridiculous! Cha gio came out really really hot and took around 10mins for it to crisp up. Bun rieu was very solid, but the huyet wasn't the best. Nam neung or snail weren't anything special but will satisfy a craving. Pretty big portions at this place. One of the frequent stops for this shopping plaza with a variety of dishes to choose from. I got the pad Thai which was about $19. It was quite large and I was only able to eat half and take the other half for dinner. There was a lot of chicken and some big shrimp in there was well. Service was very fast and efficient. Came here to eat a meal w my extended family. It was a party of 9 so we ordered a lot of food to share. We got the sour catfish soup, braised catfish, lobster noodles, honey walnut shrimp, nuoc mam wings and some other dishes (tbh my uncle did most of the ordering). Overall the food is your standard Viet comfort food, the fish could have been a bit more tender and soft but the flavors were still there. To me the meal wasn't that amazing or impressive (but I'm comparing it to my mom's food so...). Like another reviewer said: you come here when your family is too lazy to cook typa meals. The main reason why I'm deducting points is because of the service. The server spilled hot soup on my uncles hand while placing it on the table and didn't adequately clean the table. They messed up our order and gaslighted us saying that we ordered it even though we didn't. (This happened twice). My family didn't want to bother arguing because we were all tired so we just took one of the dishes. We didn't get our water/drinks till the end of the meal when we reminded them they forgot it. Solid service, huge menu, great price, and delicious food, what more can you ask for? Dinner service was not as packed as I thought it would be so my family and I got seated almost immediately. I absolutely love their Canh Chua (sweet and sour tamarind catfish soup), Nem Nuong Spring Rolls (build your own), and Bo Luc Lac (Shaken Beef). For the price, you get a lot of food - just look at the size of the pork balls! If you ever run out of garnishes or vermicelli, don't hesitate to ask your server for more. The soup was flavorful and had a rich umami, I cannot recommend this enough! At the end of our dinner, we were also served a complimentary dessert (herbal jelly with chia seeds!) Great restaurant but I gave this rating due to service being mediocre. The lady on the phone was rude and not very helpful, if anything it felt like she was scolding more than anything. I called to place an order for lobster stir fried noodles. And how it works is you tell them how many pounds of lobster you're looking for so that they can choose one within your size and price range. I told them 4-5 pound max is okay but the lady acted like she was in a rush and saying she can't choose or save any lobsters even though I called ahead which I think is extremely stupid. So we come today to pick up not knowing the size of the lobster and what the price was going to come out to and the lobster ends up being 3.5 pounds. That's fine considering we're a small family but if this was for a bigger party or event that would have been a huge inconvenience. The system is very inefficient and confusing. They definitely need to fix that and please get better help for the restaurant because the staff is hurting the brand of the restaurant. read more

That and there are definitely some dishes that can be really complicated and time consuming even for my amazing mom to want to spend time preparing...
