AWFUL SERVICE, PARTICULARLY LONG PONYTAIL SERVER! If customer service matters to you. Don't go here! We have eaten at Nicks for years. The food is good. The atmosphere is old and loud, but the food is good. Today, our ticket clearly got lost and we waited for an hour for our food. All the tables that were seated behind us were served well ahead of us. Our server just kept saying your food is on the grill. Finally we were served. We ate. Our server came to us and asked us what we had ordered so he could write out a new ticket because ours must have been lost. We said this must be the reason that it took so long. At this point, I just wanted to get going. But when we were leaving another server (woman with long pony tail) said thank you for coming, how was your meal? I let her know that our ticket must have gotten lost, so the breakfast experience was very frustrating. She proceeded to tell me that the tickets are put in the order they are taken. I said I knew how it is suppose to work, but today it didn't happen. She brought a huge attitude and tried to dismiss me -- we aren't robots, I wasn't even your server, etc. Don't thank me for coming or ask me how things were if you don't give a crap. Don't get mouthy and dismissive and act like I am the one with a problem when you behave badly or try to act like you care about customer service. So Nick's lost my business for good. I will share this experience as broadly as possible. When I am telling customer service stories, this will be the one I tell. I will write reviews. Not that I think ponytail server will care, maybe Nick doesn't care. No matter. I'll use my time and money elsewhere where customers matter. read more

I've eaten meals in many varied places, and I consider Nick's Diner to be the best dining experience I've ever had. I try to eat there at least once a week. The food is fresh and delicious every time, like the best home-cooked meals. The servers are charming and friendly every time, and the charm of the room and the diverse crowd who frequent it are a great time every single time I go. It is family run, and the Nick family are a winning bunch, as are all the staff who aren't in the family. It's an early day diner, with eggs and hash browns and other sides and subs, and inexpensive specials that are so worth bringing home for dinner. Athenian chicken and Beef brisket, and, best of all, Pastichio (Greek lasagna) that is serious "fine dining." The specials vary every day. I've been here a few times but after my most recent experience I don't think we'll be back and I'm wishing I'd made some of these discovers the first time around (or before I had eaten!). We were sat at 11:34 when the restaurant was full. After ordering quickly, we received our food at 12:29--which is ridiculous for a dinner which needs to have fast turnover. When we spoke later about the wait, they explained that one of the food items needs that long to cook. Something in the explanation and lack of apology (how can a diner version of corn beef hash take 40-50 minutes??) rubbed us wrong. To be fair, the food was fine and in other experiences to the restaurant we've had more normal wait times for food (including the corn beef hash). But the real kicker is the bathroom. In order to get to the bathroom, you travel through the kitchen, past the washing dishes sink on one side and open containers holding potatoes etc that will eventually be someone's food on the other side. You get to two doors--one for woman, one for men, which have toilets. There are no sinks in either toilet room and you have to use the sink that is outside--in the same room as the kitchen and within 3 feet of the dishwashing sink and open food. We washed our hands, but, the setup means that if someone ever doesn't or forgets or is a small child or some other explanation is potentially walking next to the food you are going to eat with gross germy hands. read more

Nick's diner is old school in every way, from the metal dining car to the swivel stools to the large greasy breakfasts. I've never tried lunch here, but who needs lunch? Breakfast will keep you full for most of the day. The eggs and omelettes are copious and tasty. The home fries are fresh and spicy (onion & garlic spicy). And the breakfast meats are traditionally greasy and good. Space is tight, so be prepared to wait on a busy weekend morning, when it's packed with regulars. The waitstaff are friendly, and the dining room is clean, and the ambience screams "old diner in Wheaton". However, it's a fantastic place when you are hungover on Sunday AM or if you just like to stuff yourself silly in the morning. (PS The bathroom is a bit scary, I don't recommend using it). read more

I tried this little diner instead of IHOP yesterday and they won my business from the big boys forever. Bacon cooked to order is a real treat. The Chef is very skilled, focused and entertaining to watch (at the counter seats you're right in the action).The potatoes have just the right ratio of soft-to-crisp and the eggs were delicious. The sliced-to-order ham looks scrumptious and I look forward to trying it on my next and many future visits. read more

My husband found this hole in the wall...he loves finding little mom and pop hole in the walls, I am always hesitant, but this place rocks!!! We love going here, it's family owned and operated and everyone is always friendly. I still love this place. The prices are right and the food is great. But boy has the service taking some serious steps backwards. Took 10 minutes to get a menu. Then never came back till the food got here. I had my empty coffee mug sitting on the corner of the table, it was obvious I needed a refill. No one ever came over to check. Finally had to wave someone over which to me is embarrassing but had no other choice. Again I'll still come back bc the food is that good and the prices very reasonable. I was in town with a friend and wanted to try a local favorite for breakfast, so we ended up at Nick's. The place was pretty packed but I take that as a good sign. It took about 10 min for us to get seated. The place was simple and cute, the staff was friendly and the food was great. We sat and waited about 30 min for our food, which was my only complaint. Although, I can't be too upset because as I said before, it was pretty packed. It was moving at a steady pace but there were a lot of orders before ours.. I ordered the sausage gravy over home fries and a side of ham. My friend got the big breakfast with chocolate chip pancakes. Everything was perfect. The coffee was a little weak but tasty. The price was right and we weren't rushed out when we were done. The whole experience was pleasant. I would definitely return if I'm back in the area and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a solid local place to get some breakfast. read more

This was by far the worse diner that we have ever eaten at. The wait staff is slow and after taking an order never comes back to check and see if you need anything. Working for a large corporation in the Wheaton area, I had my first taste of Nicks a few months into working in the area. Although I have been pretty local for many years, I had never seen a good reason to stop by, parking looked too tight, the place looked small, and compared with the rest of the area, it did not seem in keeping with the times. I was finally persuaded to give the place a shot and I was pleasantly surprised. The food is what you would expect your Grandma to cook for you. Nothing fancy, but still very hearty and filling which is actually the appeal for me. If I wanted mile high pancakes beautifully designed and coated in toppings, I go to IHOP....Nicks however fills that need we all still have to be taken care of. I have never eaten inside before, I usually take my order to go, so I can't comment on the ambiance or staff...it is a diner so that atmosphere is what a diner should feel like. My typical breakfast meal is scrambled eggs with cheese, homefries, bacon and toast. The prices are incredibly reasonable. Please remember to bring cash. read more

Although parking can be rough and there can be a wait if you go during prime hours, the wait is worth it. The father and son (and i believe the daughter works there as well) are all so friendly, and really get to know their clientel. Well, it was my first time here. I was recommended by a good friend. So let me start off by saying I have no complaints food wise that is. Matter of fact the food was great. I would definitely come back to take some carryout. So the two stars has nothing to do with the food. The two stars has everything to do with how uncomfortable we felt during our visit and I will explain why. The cook was an absolute jerk. He was slamming plates, food, etc. We were actually sitting right behind him (the counter). It was appalling to watch. We felt bad for the waitresses as we could see their frustration. Nobody said anything to him. I'm all about customer service and although he was not speaking to us directly ,he was making our food. Maybe he was having a bad day but that is no excuse. The chocolate chip pancakes are awesome! Lots of dark chocolate morsels. I've also had an omelette, which is probably the best one I've ever had, as it was low on eggs and high on the other ingredients, like spinach, cheese, etc. They used just enough eggs to hold it all together, and it was perfect. Nick's Diner has tons of character and great food - a slice of Americana, Norman Rockwell-esque, come to America success story, other similar descriptive phrases - you get the idea. Absolutely try the home fries. Going to Nick's and not trying them is the equivalent of going to Paris and not seeing the Eiffel Tower. Also highly recommended is the breakfast ham - every serving freshly sliced off the spit. Everything I have tried has been really yummy. It's a tight fit sitting inside, but well worth it. They are the antithesis of the 24 hour diner being open only from morning until early afternoon, but that assures that you will always have the same cooking staff and the same friendly wait staff and management. Awful just plain awful. Like other reviewers I don't understand how this place stays in business - other than being around forever and catering to the local 1950's elderly community who actually think the food is still "good." I AM a local. Grew up about 1 mile away from Nick's. The last time we ate there (the very last time) the order was simple. Eggs scrambled, bacon well done, white toast side. After waiting about 25 minutes we had: eggs that were cold and tasted artificial; raw bacon and the toast was cold and stale. When we asked the waitress/counter person if we could at least get the bacon reheated - she came back and said that the "cook refuses to reheat the bacon." She then went on to explain that the regular cook was on vacation - like that helped to explain the extremely crappy food. We left and refused to pay the check beyond the OJ we had consumed (which was the only thing that wasn't awful). The food was never great at Nick's but it used to be edible and relatively inexpensive. Not anymore. IHop around the corner is way way better even if you have to wait 30 minutes for a table. read more

Came here with my friend after a hard day (ok, after an hour and a half) shopping at Costco. At 11:00, they were crowded so we took a seat at the counter. Friend was happy with her big breakfast (pancakes, eggs, sausage, home fries). She liked the simplicity of the menu (I would say it's more like "have it our way," or, in other words, no substitutions). I got 2 eggs over medium, wheat toast toasted dark, sausage. I asked for grits but they don't have them (the waitress puzzled, huh, you know lots of people have requested grits this morning). How can you be a diner with no grits? Well, this is going to be my answer next time someone insists Washington is the South! If grits aren't served at breakfast, it cannot be the South! Anyhow, my breakfast came a few minutes before my toast and it's not because they toasted it dark--it was barely toasted. But I couldn't send it back because my eggs were already getting cold. They did make us a fresh pot of decaf, which we appreciated. I was not crazy about the home fries because they are so thick they don't have much crisp part. If I come back, I'll ask them to spread them out on the grill more. All in all, not bad, just nothing to write home about. They dive-y atmosphere was good. read more

I went to Nick's Diner this morning for a breakfast sandwich. I ordered a steak and egg on toasted sub roll with lettuce, tomato, mayo, onions and peppers. I called my order in and picked it up within ten minutes. By the time I got to my job (15min away), the sandwich was incredibly soggy. The tomato was not sliced. It was chopped therefore, it was wet. That explains why the soggy bread. The lettuce was brown and there were bits and pieces of onion and green pepper that I could hardly see. The steak meat was incredibly thin. I paid $9.54 for nothing. I was very disappointed. This is not the first time I ate something bad from them (had to eat some of the sandwich because I was hungry). I gave them benefit of the doubt by returning today after several months. Many years ago, their food was simply delicious. It was home down. Today, I don't know what what the hell is going on in there. Hands down, when patronizing a food establishment, the food should always be good no matter what. read more
