I think the portion sizes at Nicks is above average for sure I had the fish and chips which were pretty good. Service was about average. Disgusting what I had discovered. As i was finishing up my oysters, which i had already ate 16 having 2 left. I eat my bread pudding then did not want my oysters to go to waste and as im picking the meat off the oyster there was a 3 inch worm coming out of my food. I went there with my partner for our anniversary happy hour. The atmosphere is lovely, but the server didn't mention that happy hour prices are not applicable to the outside dining area!!! Not that it was a huge price diference, but somebody should have mentioned it since we were there for the three hours of "happy hour" and there was a sign on our table about the happy hour prices! Could the manager have been more rude? We asked if the crab was freshly cooked, which is wasn't because the leg meat in the crab was the consitency of beef jerky and the inside of the crab was dried out, no exaggeration. the manager said it was, but would check and walked away. The manager never came back with an answer. I understand curt and salty service when the food is solid. I don't get the attitude that you're lucky to be eating here and for us to be serving you food when the food is poorly prepared. Will never go back here ever again. read more

Highly recommend for seafood lovers! Huge restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating. They tend to have a long wait, especially for large parties, but it's worth it! Menu has other items for those who do not like seafood as well. Crabs available as well. My Nicks favorites include the cream of crab soup, crab cake sandwich, and their orange crush! Besides the wait, the only other issue is that the outside area tends to be very loud when a band is playing. Definitely a great place to relax and look out over the water though! read more

Friday night was the 1st I've been to nick's fish house in a while and came away quite disappointed. The 'large' crabs were barely mediums...and really light. I introduced 2 crab picking neophytes to the glories of crab...and spent the time explaining that REAL crabs are big and sweet and nothing like what was in front of us. The fries rocked! Went here tonight, it was pretty much a huge disappointment... On one hand, it's on the water, there's a parking lot with free parking, and their crab dip was amazing. On the other hand, no food should ever taste as bad as some of the stuff we had. My mom got the surf and turf and their steak tasted like gasoline and was overdone, and the lobster also tasted like gasoline and was not cooked, like, at all. I took one bite after she said it tasted funny and had to spit it out. This was one of (if not the most) expensive meal on menu and she barely touched it. Luckily the waiter realized she was extremely displeased and took it off the bill, which was nice of him. The fried seafood was ok... my dad and my boyfriend were both happy with theirs (fried oysters and fish and chips). I got the jumbo shrimp and it didn't really taste like shrimp... thankfully there were some pretty good fries that accomponied them, which is mostly what I concentrated on eating. My brother got the pulled pork sandwich and he said that was good. I sort of want to throw up thinking just thinking about the steak and lobster, and that really, really shouldn't be the impression someone is left with after dining at a restaurant... I've had better seafood at Joe's Crab Shack. I definitely won't be back. I only gave it a 2 because the crab dip was really good, and the waiter was nice. read more

This place was suggested to us while we were visiting Baltimore and it was pretty good. We started with the lobster and crab dip and it did not disappoint. We the order the Chile lime clams which tasted really good with all the juice left from the sauce. For my dinner I got the crab cakes and deck fries and both were just OK. Ive been here multiple times and its always been decent until today when I found a BUG LARVA IN MY CALAMARI. The server and manager were nice about it and we didnt pay but that doesnt make up for the fact that it was completely unacceptable for that to happen. Great food long wait! It was worth the wait, but a warning for those who don't have 3+ hours for dinner on a Saturday night don't even bother. Now, the food; I had the fried oysters and scallops with a side of asparagus. The oysters were some of the best I'd eaten this side of New Orleans! Even the grilled veggies were tasty. A group of us went to Nick's on May 1, 2018. We saw the hostess as the sign said, we waited about 15 minutes and then we were seated on the 2nd floor deck. We asked for the happy hour menu and were told that is bar only. They didn't tell us until AFTER seating us. We stayed put. As the area filled up the service slowed down, way down. By time the last food order came out (we did order at separate times) it was a wrong, dried out and horrible. It took over half an hour to get our checks (they split them, we did not ask) and come to find out there is no bathroom (that we could find) or POS system on the 2nd floor. It's going to be a long summer at this dock bar. read more

I've been here at least four times now -- a few times for lunch and once for dinner. You can't beat the summer vibe, as it is right on the water and has a relaxed, rustic atmosphere with the picnic-tables and all. It's a good place for a post-work happy hour, where food and service is not a priority. That said, the food and service is very inconsistent. I've had the fish and chips (can't go wrong), shrimp salad (OK), soft shell crab sandwich with wasabi (should have never left the kitchen). For the prices, I would expect much better. With all the choices of seafood restaurants in Baltimore, I probably won't be going back here. read more

Another phony "local" crab shack. Stopped by for lunch on Sunday. I wanted to introduce a buddy to local crab cakes.... what better place to enjoy them but on the water in Baltimore. We asked the hostess if the crabs were fresh and local, and she said "I don't know, I think so." We asked the waiter the same question, and he said that the crabs are not local, but from the Gulf of Mexico. The waiter even said "local crabs aren't in season yet." We stupidly believed him. We checked when we got home, and local crabs are very much in season! Why bother to drive to Baltimore if you're getting crabs that would be fresher and cheaper in Safeway? This place is a scam. If you own a "fish house" on the water in Baltimore, the least you should do is to educate your staff on what you are serving.... and serve real Maryland food. read more

This was my first visit to Baltimore for business. The weather was perfect to be outside on their deck. I selected this restaurant from the reviews and their menu. I arrived to the restaurant as they opened at 11 am. The hostess and waitress staff were great! I was amazed by the lump crab cake; which was full of crab meat and well seasoned. The steamed mussels with a tomato based sauce were some of the best I've eaten. This was the perfect start for eating seafood while in Baltimore. read more

Had lunch there with an old friend the other day. It is right on the water beneath the Hanover Street Bridge. This is not one of the prettier water spots in Baltimore... but, yes, it is on the water. Lots of outdoor seating but we chose to eat inside. Very casual decor with a nautical/ pub type of theme. Waitresses are young and not the most professional. I think this is the type of place that fills to the gills with young professionals looking to score on a warm evening. The food isn't great, probably doesn't need to be. They promote their crab cake as being 8 oz. of jumbo lump crab. I consider myself a very good judge since I am truly looking for the perfect crab cake. I expected a very large crab cake. Nope! My educated guess would be 6 oz., max! Served broiled, it was pretty bland and had that fishy taste you sometimes (but, not always) get with asian crab meat. I would not recommend it. Fries were ok. My guest had a shrimp salad sandwich which she said was good. It was more appealing than my selection. Not my kind of place. Didn't care for the atmosphere, the service or the food. Sunday, April 12, a friend and I went to have dinner at Nicks. It was a beautiful day out, so we wanted to find somewhere outside to eat. I have previously have been to Nicks and was dissatisfied with their food, but wanted to give it another try. The atmosphere is awesome! Our waitress, Lauren, was AWESOME!! Now the reason I gave it a 1 star is clearly about their food. I got steamed shrimp, they were overcooked, unpeelable, could barely eat them. My friend got sweet potatoes fries that looked and tasted pathetic, they tasted horrible. My friends daughter got a chicken tender and kids meal, I suggest no old bay on fries for kids, don't know what they were thinking. I am overall unhappy with my entire food experience. I will never return there ever again. 2 strikes and I'm done! Not only are they overpriced, their food was disgusting! They would need to make vast improvements before I ever go back! read more

This used to be a nice place to dine with good food, good service and attentive managers. This past Tuesday we treated two of our friends to dinner and visited. When my friend arrived with her husband she was not seated by the hostess, but instead told to come back once we arrived. She had to wait by the front door for us to arrive. The dining room was not crowded at all. We arrived and were seated and I had to request a window seat as she wanted to seat us by the inside wall, even though there were window seats available. Not sure why that was. We explained to the waiter what had happened and he said he was "sorry bout that." We sat down and ordered and to start off, they were out of Iced Tea - the waiter told me there were no tea bags. In addition, you do not offer any bottled water, my second choice. We ordered a doz raw oysters and at least 1/3 of them were very small and should not have been served. The flavor was good but too small for the price. Our food came out and my crab balls were big and black and greasy. They were so greasy they glistened. I sent them back. I then ordered Ahi Tuna and it was served very rare and laid on a plate covered in pink goo that looked like Thousand Island dressing. It was not very appetizing and disguised the flavor of the Ahi. My friend ordered a crab grilled cheese sandwich and could not eat it as it was so fishy tasting. She ended up eating her husband's fish sandwich with him. We were all disappointed. They serve lots of cheap bread. The Bruschetta I ordered tasted like store bought fresh salsa and cheap white bread that is greased and toasted and described as homemade garlic bread. I could not eat it. All in all, we all agreed that we will not be returning to this once shining star on the water. It is now a dingy, poorly run restaurant with lots of inedible dishes. I'm embarrassed that I've told people to go here. Nick's used to be a reliable, tasty restaurant with a great view. Well, they still have the view. Their phone message states that they don't take reservations during the summer since they are so busy, and I think they should make similar concessions for the kitchen - maybe not make anything outside of steamed crabs and things like fries. The night we went, in addition to their full menu, they had a hefty list of specials and my sister and I selected our entrees from that list. We were a table of 5, and the other 3 diners ordered salads for main course and all said they were "ok" and "fine". We started with the cream of crab, and asked if they could nuke them before they came to the table. We'd all been to Nick's before and been back many times, but they routinely serve lukewarm soup. The server snapped back that it was hot because it came out of a pot on the stove. Needless to say when it came to the table we sent it back to the kitchen because really, who wants to eat lukewarm soup? Especially when you're paying $9 for a cup. The server didn't like our request, but I don't think we should spend $50 on cold soup to appeal to her feelings. Is wanting your soup to be hot such a drag for restaurants? I ordered the halibut special and my sister ordered the soft crabs. I wasn't looking for anything fancy, I just really wanted a tasty piece of halibut with some veg on the side - easy. My plate had clearly been under a heat lamp for a bit of time before making it to the table 10 minutes after everyone else's food. I think I was being punished for speaking up for the table that our soup was cold. The exterior of the fish formed a rubbery hardened shell around some softer nicer meat inside. You are not going to believe this - they served it with the butt ends of asparagus - the woody tough parts that you cut off and discard. Don't misunderstand, I am not complaining that this part was on my plate, I am complaining because that was the ONLY part on my plate. Nothing edible. This was a $30 dish. I picked at and ate what parts were edible on my plate, but I did ask the server to check with the chef that he meant to only put the woody asparagus butts on my plate and not the tender edible part of the vegetable, and she did. She confirmed that the chef said that 8 pieces of asparagus wood were his intention and also a garnish of sorts. The soft crabs were similarly priced, and my sis said they were fine, but we all took a look at the plate with food falling off when it was delivered. When the waitress put it down, a ton of rice fell off the plate and all over the table, and also her hands were IN the food because there was no part of the plate to hold where you could avoid touching someone's food. Just not ok, get a bigger plate. I have a Facebook group called, Baltimore Cream of Crab Club. I am going to paste the review of Nick's cream of crab from another diner so you can see that I am not just a hater with a bad experience, this is just how they do. "Served salty and crabless, the cream of "crab" at Nick's Fish House arrived at the table lukewarm and with a side of snippy service. Thick with thickener and devoid of flavor, this buttery porridge should be called cream of flour. Hard pass." read more

We went on a Friday night (last night), so it was fairly crowded. However, it wasn't so crowded that the poor service was forgivable. Our server took awhile to come to our table, did not really check up on us that often, and disappeared towards the end of the meal. We started out with the coconut shrimp, which was delicious. For my meal I had the crab grilled cheese with mashed potatoes, and although the sandwich was good, the mashed potatoes were cold. Since we were pretty much ignored by the server I didn't even bother trying to get them heated up. We might have been willing to try them on another night, but both my boyfriend and I are sick to our stomachs today. Chancing food poisoning again is not worth it. read more

I visited Nick's while in Baltimore during crab season. I was looking for the locals' place for crab and was told this was it. The place is a little hard to find and requires a car to get there. It sits right on the water and offers both inside and outside eating. The staff was friendly and although it was packed, we never had to wait long for a drink at the bar while we waited an hour for our table. The hostess warned us ahead of time, so it was not a big deal although we asked for an outside table and was given a table in the dining room. Again, not really a big deal. The server was excellent, friendly and helped us as novices on what size and how many crab to order. We got 2 dozen, 78s for the three of us with coleslaw, onion rings and a "bucket of fries." The food arrived promptly and the server once again was helpful as she gave us a tutorial on how to break open the crab which was delicious and made up for the small portion of sides, the bucket of fries was a small bowl, that were not very good. Overall, it was worth the wait for the experience and next time we will hold off on the sides and get another 1/2 dozen crab. Service was excellent. read more
