I came here specifically for happy hour and really enjoyed myself. They offer a happy hour special that is not listed on the menu: six oysters (two flavors), truffle fries, and a drink for $35. That alone felt like a great deal. I tried the volcano and teriyaki oysters, and they were so good. The truffle fries also held their own, and I am very particular about my fries, so that says a lot. I also ordered the happy hour tacos (oyster and catfish). They were okay, nothing to run home about. Since the restaurant clearly has some elevated sauces, I would love to see those same sauces incorporated into the tacos to make them stand out more. Otherwise, they feel pretty standard. I have tried them multiple times at other events and was so excited when they first announced they were going to have a storefront. I made reservations for my group and they were very accommodating. We had the long table right in front of their main window with a perfect view for the street. We walked here after viewing the Lights on 34th street and was the perfect temperature and climate to complete the evening. It definitely transforms you into elegance immediately upon walking into this gem! From the decor, color scheme, and ambience; you are swept into sheer nobility. I enjoyed each dish from the fresh oysters and how they were presented to my bisque that left the perfect coating on my tongue which had me sopping up every last bit with my bread. We all enjoyed our dishes and the space. I was hard deciding upon what to order and I so can't wait to go back and try everything else on the menu. I watched as the bartenders prepared drinks and everyone was having a great time throughout the restaurant. And prep for my trip to Baltimore, I researched black owned restaurants to visit, and I was delightfully introduced to a Black owned oyster bar in the city. Luckily for me, it wasn't too far of an Uber ride from the harbor area where I stayed and so I took a quick trip to enjoy the oysters and a nice cocktail. The restaurant looked like it was located in a really nice area from what I can tell. The restaurant is small in size but very well decorated; it has a bit of a sophisticated flair. We only stopped by for oysters, which were good. I was a bit disappointed by the limited options at the raw bar since this is an oyster bar. The shucker we had that particular night needed some more training in shucking and in overall oyster presentation. If it's not obvious by now, I can be a snob about that, but if we're talking raw seafood I will be that. A few oysters we got were shucked through the heart and shriveled up, which is unacceptable if oysters are supposed to be your bread and butter. Visited on a Saturday afternoon with reservation. Easy to make a reservation via Resy. We were immediately greeted and seated immediately upon being checked in. We were there close to opening and the restaurant quickly filled with patrons. The interior is beautiful and bright with tables and bar seating. The restaurant tables are cozy but it definitely makes for a warm communal ambiance. The team was attentive and our server Katie gave great recommendations for starters, drinks, and entrees. I had the branzino entree with broccolini as well shared deviled eggs and ceviche. The starters were really good - classic deviled with an oyster fritter on top and creamy filling and the ceviche and seasoned chips were light and tangy. The entree plates are a hefty portion - the branzino was a whole fish filet in two pieces and was well presented. The white bean puree with the fish was very creamy and delicious although I have like a bit more flavoring on the branzino itself - the salsa verde it came with was very chunky and couldn't be poured over the fish entree easily. I was so excited to give Urban Oyster a try! The inside is stunning with a beautiful, large bar and a raw bar area that greets you first thing when you walk in the door. We asked our bartender/server about gluten free options on the menu and she was unsure of what items would be safe. Another server said that everything was gluten free except the flatbread and the tacos. This seemed encouraging at first but upon further investigation, I kept seeing other items like a lobster corn dog and fried oysters that probably contained gluten too. When I asked about those items, I was told they did have gluten as well. At this point, I was feeling a little nervous. The bartender offered to check with the kitchen which I said I would appreciate since none of the staff seemed to know what ingredients were in the food but at this point, we had been going back and forth for a while and it seemed like I was becoming a nuisance. We ultimately got the charred BBQ oysters topped with cheddar and bacon and the lobster bisque to start. The BBQ flavor was a little too overwhelming for me but the charred texture was nice. The lobster bisque fell flat for me as it was watery and the flavor was lackluster. Then the scallop mushroom risotto and beef bourguignon came out. The server snatched the beef bourguignon right back up and apologized for the fried onions on top. I was confused since fried onions are usually gluten free. Then she was unsure whether I could have the mashed potatoes and asked me if they were okay to which I responded, "I don't know, you tell me". At this point, I was really starting to get frustrated. After checking with the kitchen (again), she realized the fried onions were coated in cornstarch and the mashed potatoes were gluten free. Great. The beef bourguignon was delicious and hearty. Probably the best dish we tried. The scallops were tender and well seasoned. I wasn't the biggest fan of the risotto but that's probably because I don't always love mushrooms. It had a lot of mushroom-y flavor so if you like that, you'll probably love that dish. All in all, I felt a bit underwhelmed and uncomfortable. I think if the service had been better, I would easily knock this review up to a 4. In my opinion, a nice restaurant where you're likely paying $50+ per person should have their staff well trained enough to know about common allergens. If you can mention the word "vegan" on your menu, you should also take the time to mark items as gluten free, contains nuts, etc. I'm sorry but there's no excuse for cutting corners around something so important at a place that is boasting a James Beard nomination. I hope that with time and training this changes because I'd love to return in the future for a meal I can enjoy without worrying about how sick I might get later on. read more

I also absolutely love that The Urban Oyster is Black- and woman-owned. That alone gets my initial support, but thankfully the experience backs it up. As for the food: the oysters were tasty. We had an early Sunday dinner from the Restaurant Week menu and the food, service, and atmosphere were stellar! The lighting is warm and inviting, and my favorite part was the fish-print wallpaper on the ceiling in the bathrooms! The restaurant week (RW) menu was an absolute steal at $55 a person for all the food you get. And if you're going to the first Black female- owned oyster bar in the country, you're going to get a dozen oysters! The RW menu offered Chincoteagues, which are delicious and big, but they had a lot of other oysters on offer for the raw bar. I was very happy sipping my Pink Lady cocktail and eating oysters. The entrees were great. my husband loved the sweet tea brined Yardbird, and it was a full meal. My steak was delicious, it almost tasted like jerky with the maple glaze, and the green goddess mash was to die for. I absolutely loved the combo of flavors. I did order the steak medium and I feel it came a little on the rare side. I still very much enjoyed it as I don't mind a rare steak, but if you don't like red/pink, I'd suggest medium well to be safe! Dessert was so decadent, the key lime pie wasn't on the menu as it was a backup to the RW dessert, but it was thick, creamy, and very flavorful. This was one of the best meals I've ever had. The food and drinks were all amazing! The staff were also excellent and very attentive. Really nice and attractive space. The only negative I have is the price. As others have mentioned it is overpriced and although they do warn you they automatically add 20% tip. Nobody likes this and I wish they would just change the price and not accept tips. We will definitely be back but only for special occasions. The excellent food and service don't overcome the price for a "regular" night out. read more

When I heard there was a new female black owned oyster bar in Baltimore, I knew I had to make the trip and I'm so happy that I did. We visited for brunch and were welcomed by a friendly smile who sat us promptly. The Urban Oyster is beautifully decorated and almost makes you feel like your taking a journey into the ocean, it is on the smaller side and I can see it becoming very busy during happy hour/dinner service. Our server Katie was great and provided us with a great experience. She took time to explain the menu, answer any questions that we had and even made great recommendations. We started with the Chargrilled Oysters - they allow you to mix and match so we went with the Volcano which is a hot chili paste/oil and the Cheese Louise which was a mixture of cheeses. Both were good but over powered the oysters just a little bit. For entrees my friend went with the French Toast and scrambled eggs and I had the Crab Cake Benedict. Both were delicious and flavorful. I'm so glad that I took the time to come check out this amazing new place. I most definitely will be back to check out their happy hour specials and other menu items. read more
