Yelp never lets me down, I was going into this place believing that the roast beef here would be on another level compared to other spots. The place has an old diner like vibe, not too much parking available or seating which is an inconvenience during the busy lunch hour rush. The sandwich was just ok, mediocre and luke warm. There was bbq sauce on HALF of the sandwich, the other side was just filled with cold meat. I will give this place one more try, just based on so many positive reviews I give Nicks the benefit of the doubt...maybe my cook had a bad day, maybe... No French fries on or onion rings come included so make sure to ask for them on the side. Cash only keeps prices low. Not really sure what the big deal about this place is. Sure the beef was really good and tasty. But everything else was so low rate it didn't make up for anything. And by everything else I mean the seating (not enough of it), the tomatoes, lettuce, bun, fries (gross). The restaurant doesn't look like its changed anything since 1983. I first tried this place about 7 years ago. My husband (bf at the time) raved about this place. I finally succumbed and tried it. It was the best roast beef I have had in my life. The meat was rare, and the sauce was delish. I tend to get the super (not that I could ever finish the super), but its all about the onion roll!!! I love their French fries too, they are similar to McDonalds cut fries, which I love. The place has been featured on the Phantom Gourmet and is called famous for a reason. Don't go here to get a vegetarian sandwich, or gourmet style truffle fries. They specialize in roast beef on a fresh roll, with your choosing of toppings. When my girlfriend experienced it for the first time, she asked the woman behind the register what she gets on her roast beef sandwich "bbq sauce and cheese" the woman answered, and that's what my girlfriend always orders from that day forward. I generally always order a super roast beef, and yep, I finish it all. The staff are always friendly, bantering and joking behind the counter. The fries are ok, sometimes better than others. The strawberry milkshake? I'm in love. It tastes like strawberry nesquik, which is beyond ok in my book. There's not a lot of seating, but there doesn't have to be. Parking is wherever you can fit, and while there are plenty of roast beef places in the North Shore, this is one of the best. Based on the reviews, I had expectations set too high. Good sandwiches with ample amounts of meat but the cheese was not very melted and the sandwich was not hot. Good onion rings and normal pre frozen fries. The chicken parm sandwich looked tasty though. Slow roasted rare roast beef shaved onto a onion roll with James river bbq sauce and your other choice of toppings. The beef is absolutely the most tender I've ever eaten. Soft melt like butter amazing. Something about that area including Ipswich and Essex that they just know how to deep fry things. Onion rings were absolutely the best. Ultra crispy like biting into a potato chip coating with super sweet perfectly cooked onion. Greaseless feeling. Absolute perfection. This is the real deal. Kelly's is closer to me and to me a different sandwich because they slice the beef thicker but the quality can vary from time to time. Of course I'm biased, but the same way Philly has the cheesesteak, the north shore has roast beef. Go there for one thing only: super beef 3-way or 2-way - includes sauce, cheese, and mayo. Also, just found out you can call ahead and pick-up. For take out you need about 10 minutes. They just did a reno, which includes a 50" hdtv that is set to a slide show of folks holding up Nick's bumperstickers around the world. I still miss the 1970s tables and chairs, but whatever. Being from the Boston area we locals know our roast beef joints. Growing up in areas having so many around, I've tried & enjoyed these sandwiches my whole life. Having recently moved to *this* area, of course we had to try them. Usually I'm skeptical of business hype but the "hype" that surrounds Nick's is not unwarranted. Nick's is AMAZING. Their junior beef is the size of Bill & Bob's large ("big beef") - and pretty incredible. They have shoestring style REAL fries, not the refried ones that B&B have used. We also like that their menu is concise with the tried & true standard offerings of a sandwich shoppe. Too many places clutter their menus with so much variety that the focus is lost & quality dips. Nick's keeps it real. Best part - friendly & consistently awesome service. Most places toss you your bag, take your money & don't even look at you - these people look you in the eye, smile, say "hello" & "thank you". You feel welcome. Anyone who loves this place has never been to Mino's in Marblehead or Lynn. The beef here is great but not to die for. And the menu is limited - no ham, no Italian. Just beef like the name says. There's nothing wrong with that but why limit your menu like that? If the beef is great, the veggies and food are super fresh and that sets it apart from other roast beef places on the North Shore. Just tried Nick's for the first time despite having worked down the street for almost two years. I got a tuna salad (boring I know) but it was good and had the perfect amount of tuna fish and a decent portion of salad. I will not be visiting this establishment again. It is not a good value, not to mention that the management does not have seem to have any concern about providing decent customer service. Our order was completely wrong and the super beefs that were given to us in our take out order were not close to matching what was written on the slip. It was to the point that I couldn't eat my sandwich because I don't at all like the special sauce that was put on and that was not supposed to be added. The other sandwich was made significantly less enjoyable because the onions weren't well-done but were raw. When we called to speak to the manager to try to make this situation right, she said that she would not give us a refund because people frequently scam and say that their orders are wrong when they actually aren't as a way to get their money back. I didn't appreciate this accusation. She wanted us to bring the sandwiches back to her, which was not a viable option for us, living 45 minutes away. Just started working in Beverly and trying to find a couple of good lunch spots. Decided to go with Nick's because of the really good Yelp ratings. Only a couple of other times have I been so misled by Yelp ratings. I decided to try a roast beef plate because I like to experience a couple of different things in my first visit to a new place and the plate offers a sandwich, fries, onion rings and salad. A nice mix of items to try I thought. I got my order to go so I could head back to the office and get a little work done while I'm eating. I thought it was odd that I only had one box (remember I have a bunch of hot food and a salad). Sure enough I get back and open the box and half of the salad is warmed up to fry level. Another thing that jumps out at me is that my ratio of fries to salad is somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 or maybe 15:1. Now, I'm not saying there was no salad, in fact it was probably an okay amount given that I had a roast beef sandwich, fries and onion rings too, but there were enough fries to feed another 3 or 4 people. The onion ring order was quite large too. Now, normally you might say this isn't such a bad thing, who doesn't like getting a lot of food for their money, but the problem was that the fries were "meh" at best and the onion rings (of which there was also a good size portion) were nothing to write home about either. Even if I had thoroughly enjoyed them, there were far too many for one person to eat as part of this meal and since I didn't thoroughly enjoy them, there's easily a pound of fried food sitting in my office garbage as I type this. Finally, the roast beef sandwich. Full disclosure, roast beef sandwiches don't get me excited the way an Indian buffet, falafel, rack of lamb, chile relleno, a juicy burger or even a chicken parm sandwich does, but I decided to get it because it is their specialty after all and I certainly don't dislike roast beef. All that said, the sandwich was uninspired to say the least. The sauce was bland and the bun tasted like something you can get from the bargain bin at the grocery store (bread aisle, not even deli!). Oh, actually two more things, it's located awkwardly on a corner with a light and it was a pain in the butt to get out of the parking lot and they only accept cash. I don't plan on going back here again, and I would warn you that I have no idea how they managed a 4.5 star Yelp rating on so many reviews. Occassionally I'll go to Supreme's when I'm in Danvers or Bill and Bob's in Salem, and I'm satisfied, but when I go to Nick's again, I remember how amazing it is in comparison. Just the best roast beef around. I will be honest, I have never gotten anything else, but frankly it's a roast beef place, I don't need to. I thought I head from a friend today they have fried broccolli and that is good. Also I understand the pizza roll is superb and the fries are great (actually, I have gotten the fries before, so I can attest to that). Not the cheapest stuff around, but still reasonably priced and well WELL worth it anyway. Personally I don't have any one combo of toppings I like, it kinda depends on my mood. It had been over five years since I had last gone to Nick's before tonight. I work 2nd shift, so finding decent places open after I get out of work is rare. The place hasn't changed in those years. I did however forget that they're cash only so I paid the $2 atm fee. I got a Jr beef, small fry, and a small coffee shake(gotta have the coffee shake). The Jr was massive. Enough so that I didn't end up finishing my fries. Which there was also a good amount of, especially for a small. Normally, I'd say I wasn't a fan of roast beef but my wife dragged me here and I must say, it was damn good. They cut the roast beef right behind the counter and it looked amazing. I had the super beef on an onion roll with bbq sauce and the sauce was so good. We shared a side of onion rings and mozzarella sticks. The stocks were good too but I'd say the onion rings were about average. Next time I'll get the fries that looked really good. This place is a great roast beef place which makes you leaving fuller than ever. The roast beef is thinly sliced and a nice pink color to the meat which I LOVE ( I hate the dry meat that you get, especially at Kelly's ). The bun is softy and toasted although I would prefer the great meat on a Kelly's bun but you cant have the best of both worlds. I eat my sandwiches with mayo and salt and that is it. I am not a big fan of BBQ sauce on things other than ribs so I didnt try the "special" sauce which is just BBQ. The fries are great and for the price of a small french fry your portion is huge which is great in my book, and great for sharing! The atmosphere is basic, order food, wait for food, sit and eat your food, get up and leave. The lady that takes the orders is straight forward and knows her stuff. This place does not take ATM but has an ATM machine inside which is nice, the $2.75 fee isnt but gotta deal with it. Parking is a little tight if you go when its busy but its worth the wait. Hells damn yeah Im a fan. Went in with friends' family members to the joint and I was skeptical at first, but after I went home with my roast beef sandwich plate my mind was made up. My roast beef plate came up with onion rings, beaucoup shoestring fries, and a little greek salad. I loved that the greek salad had cucumber, red cabbage slices, tomato and a light vinagrette over it. The fries were not drowned in salt. The onion rings were plain. In making the choice to not drown the fries and onion rings in salt, this gives the consumers with health problems a chance to enjoy their fried food with less sodium. Not many people may care but I've worked long enough in the food industry to know that many people are picky with their food, better to just put the condiments out and let people do as they wish with it to their food. Taking my first bite was like sex, I will always remember. As for the roast beef sandwich, it came wrapped in white butcher paper. The meat slow cooked and tender, juicy and pink. Sliced thin and not thick, which is good considering the numbers of time I've nearly choked on a thick piece of sliced roast beef. Damn diggity. What I really liked about this sandwich was that the bun was not all bread, less bread is all good for me, plenty of roast beef, I would say over stuffed almost. The sauce that some of the locals crave about is some sort of bbq sauce. I prefer this sauce as oppose to the southern bbq sauce because the sauce has less brown sugar. Definitely did not find myself missing the tangy sweet sauce that they use down south. I prefer this version. My friends had order my sandwich for me so it was ordered 3 way meaning mayo, cheese and Nick's special bbq sauce. Damn good sandwich. Didnt try anything else, but now that I have had Nick's world's famous roast beef sandwich I am a fan fo reals!!!! Yeah baby!!!!! I do love myself a good roast beef sandwich now and then, and Nick's hits the spot! I'd like it to be a bit more warm as sometimes the beef is a bit on the luke warm side, but the ooey gooey cheese, mayo and sauce make up for it. I used to always get my beef with onion on it, too, but then they recently switched from the white onion they use for the too-good-to-be-true onion rings, to a red onion on their sandwiches now. I kinda hated that change, so I did try to ask for the onion to be grilled...which is definitely an improvement from the raw red onion, but still...nothing compared to their white onion on the beef. There are many roast beef places in the coastal region of Massachusetts. Don't ask me why there aren't more across the country (we could sure use some in northern Virigina). Nick's is a great little sandwich shop. I recommend the Super Beef with "everything." It's a mess of a sandwich, and many lesser (read: scared) individuals think that the multiple flavors of the condiments would obscure the great taste of the roast beef itself, but it's like a symphony of taste in your mouth. That said, the french fries are rather bland though you do get a lot of them. The onion rings are a better choice as a side order, though with one of the larger sandwiches, you shouldn't need a side order. The prices are great for a sandwich shop. Like others have said, this is one of my first stops every time I get back to Beverly. Enjoy! read more

The bad part is that I am in California and it is very hard to find anything like these places in Boston. And once you go here, you'll never want to go to Arby's ever again! First off let's talk about he parking situation, it sucks. They have about a dozen spots when they need 2 dozen. inside they have a few tables but we don't eat in, we get the food to go so we can head to one of Beverly's many parks and be bothered by sea gulls. The food is good. Toasted buttered sesame seed buns topped with a large mound of the meat of your choosing they will insist that you get the cheese on everything, so stand strong and avoid the cheese. The roast beef is perfectly cooked, warm and tasty. Get it with sauce and cheese if you must but the sauce is a must. Cheese not so much. The roast beef is good, the bun soft and buttery. Worth every fattening calorie. You know what is better? The pastrami. I said it the pastrami is to die for. Hot pastrrami served on the same toasted buttered roll as the roast beef topped with mustard and if you let them a slice of cheese. I'm not so keen on the cheese, it's just pre sliced american but get it with some of the bright yellow mustard and you'll be in heaven. Good stuff. If you get a plate you'll get a small scoop of salad topped with really good greek dressing and so many french fries you can't eat them all. The fries are standard shoe string fries, nothing to rave about but well cooked. The place is good, by far better than bill and bobs and a million times better than Kelly's but not as good as Billy's in Wakefield. It's pretty cheap too, we got one plate and a sandwich and it was under $15. It's cash only so come prepared as their ATM charges you $2.75 to use it. read more

Great, Real Roast Beef Sandwiches. Family was in Beverly for a swim meet, which means you have to be on the pool deck at 7 a.m. on a Saturday---so you are starved by noon. We found this place on the Yelp app for iphone. (highly recommended) Roast beef's are big, fresh sliced, and tasty. Their fries are the closest thing to McDonald's that I've ever had. Crispy, thin-perfect. Try the mushroom bites, especially if you're funghi fan, but be warned they are extremely hot when the come out, exploding with molten 'shroomy goodness.
