But a boon to the North Shore, to be sure. I can't say anything about the menu other than the roast beef sandwiches and french fries, since that's all I get. Usually more than one in each order, so I can have another sandwich later. But the roast beef sandwich is perfect. And there aren't many perfect things in this world. This was a good sandwich, loads of meat with a slice of cheese on a toasted bun. Ordered the roast beef plate, which was way too much food. Held my on though. Plate consists of your sandwich, onion rings and French fries along with a small garden salad. The onion rings are stringy and fried in a light batter. They ate mighty ratty, the French fries are go the shoe string variety, nothing special. The staff is courteous and the food comes out quickly. read more

For a Roast Beef joint, this is the best around. There's usually an argument when it comes to Kelly's vs Nick's, but Nick's takes the cake. They are cash only but they do have an ATM inside. It can get to be a little pricey, but it's a mecca all who visit New England, specifically Massachusetts, need to try. The fries are delicious and I love the BBQ sauce. The food comes out very fast. I grew up eating roast beef sandwiches. My first was at Bill and Bob's located on the lynnway near the old lobster pound in the 60's I return to the area often always having a few RB sandwiches. My last trip back my son wanted to try Nicks so we did. I may have expected to much let's just say it didn't come close to those expectations. The meat was dry, barely warm and for my taste way overdone it was maybe a medium well and that's being generous. I felt compelled to write this review after I read some guy give this place three stars while stating he likes Arby's better. Three stars on Yelp is "A-OK" but the comparison to Arby's makes me sick. I love roast beef from Boston's North Shore. I'm not sure why they are unique but now that I live in Connecticut I can't find them anywhere. When I come back to this area I always, and without fail, stop and pick up a roast beef sandwich on the way in and out. There are so many restaurants that serve roast beef (prepared in this manner) that I wanted to try new places. I have only been to Nick's on this one occasion but will try to describe my impression. They have their own 15 space parking lot that seems just big enough to accommodate the seating and some take out. There are eight tables with four chairs each (no booths). Interestingly, there are a lot of pictures where their bumper sticker is bing held up in front of somewhere famous or exotic. I have to admit that their patrons have gone to an impressive amount of locations. This is a very clean and well maintained establishment. When someone was done dining and got up from a table an employee came out to wipe the table down right away. The proprietors appear to be Greek. I'm not 100% certain of that but I've been around enough to think I can tell... And that is a good thing; the Greeks make the best roast beef. I've been to other places where you get a "normal guy" making the sandwiches and the quality suffers. As for the food, I order the exact same thing every time so it makes comparisons easy. I could care less what else they have on the menu so you'd have to read another review if you like burgers and fries or whatever. Nick's charges $12.68 after tax for the following: Superbeef: cheese, mayonnaise, sauce on the side Onion Rings Large Diet Coke There is only one size for onion rings. Although it was perfect for me, it was slightly on the smaller size and I would have been disappointed to have to share. The beef was excellent. If you know this type of sandwich you will really like Nick's, if you have never had one it is a must try. It's good, but it's not the best roast beef ever. It's actually a bit dry but adding "everything" to the roast beef def. helps the taste for sure. Of course their fries and onion rings are fantastic. Different parts of the country have regional food traditions --- Philly has their cheesesteaks, Maryland has their soft shell crabs, Buffalo as their wings --- and Boston and its North Shore has roast beef sandwiches. I wasn't too familiar with this until I came to Beverly in 1992 to visit my girlfriend's (and now wife's) family. She had always talked about this place her and her friends would get hot roast beef sandwiches growing up and how amazing they were. From that first visit 23 years ago until my most recent one this week, one thing has not changed. The roast beef has never disappointed me. We have lived on the West Coast for the past 18 years and every time we summer when we come to visit family in Beverly, we make at least one, if not more stops at Nick's. We now have three kids and they constantly are pressing to get to Nick's. My order is pretty simple: Large beef with cheese and sauce, junior beef with cheese and sauce, fries and onion rings (the last two to share). If I'm particularly hungry I might get two large beefs, if I'm not, maybe just one. I never deviate from the order since I've never been disappointed and the reason you come to Nick's is for the roast beef (not their chicken fingers, salads, etc). If you don't want roast beef, go somewhere else. My only complaint about Nick's is they could enter the modern age and take credit/debit cards -- I know why they don't, but I have stopped here and realized as I was ordering that I don't have cash. Sure they have an ATM, but who wants to be taken to the cleaners with the crazy fees. Back in Seattle where we live, I often tell folks who've never been to the North Shore about this place, but certainly words cannot do justice to that first bite into a nice warm beef with sauce and cheese. Famous for what? After our party finished eating we think we figured it out. It must be the bumper sticker. From the pictures we gathered that the sticker is pretty famous. As for the rest, not so much. First impressions, this place needs updating and a good cleaning. Second impression, cash only. What year is it? Your more than welcome to use their own ATM that has a service fee. That is a major inconvenience for customers. They will tell you the credit card fees are too high. Reality is most are 2% or lower, add a dime to the beef and it is covered and customers will appreciate it. The person who took our order was very nice and efficient. We were disappointed that they only have horseradish sauce, not plain horseradish. Prices are in line with other beef joints. The big turnoff at the service counter was watching one of the other employees eat some of the fries as she was putting them into containers. Major red flag. We all got beef sandwiches and are all big fans of them. We were all in agreement. The roast beef is one of the most flavorless we have ever had and it was also a little dry.
