A real gem in a Scottsdale strip mall setting. Our Italian roots was delighted with the amazing food and attentive and pleasant service. A delicious bread basket was brought to our table with a balsamic vinegar and olive oil dipping. The house salads with vinaigrette dressing were light and tasty. Our entrees were sublime: shrimp scampi, veal Marsala and chicken piccata with pasta or veggie sides. Extensive beer, wine and liquor service and daily specials that sounded delicious. God awful. The service was great, but my boyfriend and I got an order of bread and we both took a bite and looked immediately at each other. It tasted just like wonder bread, but thick and I have no idea if that makes it better or worse. We decided to get our entrees elsewhere, at $20 a pop buca di beppo would be a more quality choice. Btw, I admittedly am a pretty picky either, my boyfriend on the other hand loves Texas Roadhouse. Do what that information what you will. We got an appetizer awkwardly, because we didn't want to come off as bread thieves. We got the mussels, reasonably priced, definitely frozen. And while we waited around 20 minutes to receive them we looked at everyone elses food and saw the most sparse, unlively caesar salads known to man. What can I say that hasn't been said about good ol' Nick's? Well...pull up a chair and let an olde tymer tell you a tale... I'm a Nick's 'OG' and have been coming here since before the liquor license was even in place! It was a simpler time back in the late 20th century ... Loop 101 only went as far North as Thomas rd...TV sets were square and heavy and there was this new thing called Yelp. It wouldn't last they said! So it's the past and I discovered Nick's veal Marsala. Hooked. For life! So much so that I really didn't stray from that dish other than pizza. I mean...if I'm going to Nick's then hook me up with that mushroom paradise! Tonight I was just feeling a little off. Cardinals just had their worst start in 32 years and so I was looking for some comfort food. As a kid I loved ziti but as an adult never really ordered it much. Tonight was the night. In short (too late) it was delicious! The cheese was a perfect pizza like consistentcy and the pasta was penne and held onto the cheese and sauce a little better than smooth traditional ziti would. I was really craving some excellent Italian food so dropped into Nick's. But maybe my taste buds were off that night because I was disappointed. As others have pointed out, the salad is pretty skimpy. For an entree, I had the lasagna bolognese. Light on the lasagna noodles, heavy on the cheese. Decided to top it all off with the layered chocolate cake, which I've had at other Italian restaurants. It was so cold, it seemed it came right out of the icebox. Yes, you don't want the icing layers to melt, but at least it could be closer to room temperature. Nick's was pretty busy that night and, from what I could hear at the bar, it seemed like neighbors enjoyed getting together there. A very family friendly vibe, we were greeted by a friendly hostess who seated us inside. They can make gluten free dishes, which I was very happy about. We started with the grilled calamari which was cooked perfectly. The entrees arrived about 15 minutes later. My husband and son had the arrabiata pasta. The noodles were a bit over cooked and the sauce was spicy, which they liked although there was too much of it on the plate. I had the seafood (with gluten-free) pasta. It was flavorful and had a good amount of shrimp, calamari, scallops and fish. We split some gelato for dessert. I will definitely be back to try the other gluten-free menu items. read more

Got a touch lost one day and happened to drive by Nick's and decided to give it a go for dinner that night. I had the Fettuccine Alfredo with Grilled Chicken and my fiancee had the Baked Ziti with Sausage. Get the Ziti if you order either of these two dishes. The Fettuccine was very al dente, which some prefer - but it was almost to the point of under-cooked and close to crunchy, not my thing. The Baked Ziti on the other hand was very good. The sausage on it was cooked perfectly and the noodles didn't taste nearly as under-cooked. If you order only one thing from this place get the Tiramisu! That dessert definitely put this place back in play for us to return. It was light, airy, delicious and not too sweet or too mocha-y. I was excited to go to Nick's as the word was it was such a good Italian restaurant. Whenever I see Osso Bucco on the menu, I order it . We'll, it was inedible. Although the veal was ample and tender it was smothered in an intense, concentrated tomato paste that overpowered the meat and risotto. There were ladles and ladles of this heavy sauce and you could not taste the meat or risotto. Everyone else at the table enjoyed their pasta and eggplant orders. My advice is to stay away from the Osso Bucco. read more

Nick's is a small Italian Restaurant that serves up a long list of dinners, pizza and house made pasta. The night I was there a long list of specials were offered and many of them were seafood. You can sit inside or on the dog friendly patio. As soon as we were seated someone gave us an abundant basket of assorted breads and many condiments. We were told by the other couple we were with that the salads are very large so we should split one so my husband and me split a Greek Salad. Just like they said it was large and worth splitting. For dinner I had the Salmon and Vegetables. The salmon was fresh tasting and cooked nicely. It was topped with lots of cooked tomatoes and some basil. The vegetables on the side were crisp and fresh. My husband had the Shrimp Diavolo. He said the shrimp were overcooked but the house made pasta was good. The other two people really enjoyed their meals and this is one of their favorite restaurants in Scottsdale. The service was above average. I thought our server was very accommodating to our table. I came here with my family, we were seated promptly. let me start there...the seating location was nex to the restroom, the smell was absolutely horrid when someone used it, there shouldn't be a seating at that location of the restaurant. After about 15 minutes we finally recieved our drinks. Then in about 20 minutes my 82 year old mother said are they going to take our order, I think a server heard and we then finally ere able to order. We ordered the mussels appetizer first, 2 orders, they were just o.k. i ordered spaghetti and meatballs with a side of Italian sausage, the sauce was gain just o.k. But the meatballs were hard with little flavor, the sausage which the sliced up and mixed it with my spaghetti was very tough and had extremely little taste. The service after we were rated was pretty non existent, a regular garden salad was $7 and the tomatoes were old and over ripe = bad taste. Bread was good though. No I won't be going or recommending this restaurant. read more

Took the entire family here tonight off a friend's recommendation. Atmosphere was quaint and comfortable, staff and the manager Anthony were fantastic, accommodating and gave great suggestions as 2 of my family members are gluten free. We really felt welcomed and taken care of. What a relief to find a nice Italian eatery that offers as many GF options as they have, so I'd def recommend if your GF and seeking a variety of options. The selection of pasta is enormous, and the homemade pasta is fantastic, and cooked perfectly al dente. The pizza doe is also delicious, not too thick, not too thin. The deserts of cheese cake and sea salt caramel gelato was a hit for the 4 kids, and zero crust on the cheese cake for GF. Wow! Just wow!! Was there tonight for dinner with a friend and it was amazing. We had fried calamari to start and it was fantastic, light breading and cooked to perfection! I had the chicken piccata with angel hair pasta, chicken was good and the sauce was perfect, pasta cooked al dente. My friend had another pasta dish (I forget the name) angel hair pasta with chicken, mozzarella, tomato, and spinach (servers suggestion)- her dish was amazing! Great portions, great pricing. The two of us were out of there for $50 (not including tip or alcohol) Wine prices were reasonable as were beer prices. I'll definitely be back soon. read more

Our family have been coming for ages and thought we would have had no issues. We had a mid size group (5), so nothing hard to handle on an empty restaurant. The food was bland, esp for the $. We asked about the tiramisu. We asked if it was a SMALL portion. Even showed by putting thumb and middle figure together and asked if it was about that size. Waiter dismissed us and went ya ya about that size. One group member also ordered Tea. Dessert came out and it could have fed the whole table and still have left overs! Not complaining about that but if your asking about a size (that only 1 person wanted) then please advise of actual size so could be aware. Another member went to make the tea for her as she started on the dessert (he forgot the milk so had to ask again for that). He took a quick sip and the face he made was of pure disgust. We asked quickly what it was. He told us to smell the tea. It smelt like FISH. The owner of the tea tried it and said omg yes it does. I guess she took too big of a sip and couldn't spit it out because she then RAN bathroom and throw up, MULTIPLE times. We advised the service and wow was he dismissive of this. We took apart the tea bag and nope not that. We smelt the milk and nope. It was then clearly the water. The waiter then brought the jug (to which he said he just opened) and said well clearly it's not the milk and we just had the water filter changed 2 weeks ago so it's not that. Our party member came back and then ran back into the bathroom almost knocking over the front staff doing so (she greatly apologizes if you are reading this but also thanks you for your very kind words in there!!). The server still at that point stood by the fact there was no issue but said he would take the tea and the only quarter eaten dessert off (because that's all that was started before she threw up). She finally sat down all sweat beaten saying how nice the front staff woman was asking if she was ok and sorry for this happening. Then the bill came. Nothing was done regarding this. We thought it was at least fair for her meal to be taken off because she just watched it all come up due to this. When we mentioned this the server was very combative with this fact saying he already took the tea off and went even as far as taking the tiramisu off and didn't need to do that. We stated again what happened, how she was feeling. He even went as far as saying. Well we don't know whose fault it is, if it's your fault or our fault so this is what we will do for you. We said taking off her food is at least fair as she didn't get to enjoy it. He said no because it will come out of his paycheque, the tea and dessert already is going to come out of it, but if your ok with that he can go ask his manager about the dinner. We said ya we're good with that. He looked mad but left. It ended off being removed but the dirty looks we were given by the waiter was very harsh. When we were leaving we saw the back staff smelling the tea and had a look of disgust and the front hostess told her to feel better and apologized again. Later that night she realized that she left her sun glasses during the commotion. She called and told them and they said they would leave it at the front. That night she was still very sick as was the other party member who took a sip. I failed to mention she is EPILEPTIC and due to not feeling good she had a mini seizure. I went back a couple days later to grab the glasses for her as she didn't want to go back in herself. I grabbed them and asked to speak to the manager. I advised them of the whole situation. The same server was there and I told them of his behaviour and they said no he would never act like that. He also said nope he would never mention it coming out of his pay and he offered to remove everything himself due to the situation. When I was then talking to the manager after this stunned that he denied it, he had the most sly look on his face (almost like the cat that ate the canary, he knew he was getting away with it!!). I talked to 2 managers and they also refused to do anything because they stated she could have gotten sick from somewhere else and it wasn't their problem. I told them again. The tea smelt like fish. They said the water was from Scottsdale so there was nothing they could do about it. I said to him (older gentleman) I was told it was filtered, he said nope. I said well the health department might not like the way it was. He leaned over and said, o are you threatening me then!! I said my family has been coming here for years is this how you treat regular customers? He said well then you guys shouldn't even come back. I knew I was not going to get anywhere so I decided to leave. They had to empathy or didn't care what happened. When I was leaving I saw a table and let them know what happened and told them not to order the tea. I was then forcibly removed by the older manager and told to never come back again. Delicious dinner! We got the linguini and clams with cream sauce instead of the white wine sauce. And we tried the veal special over risotto. The linguini plate was our favorite! The mixed bread served once seated is nice. The mini cannolis were tasty! My only take back was all the up charges with any little change, like changing the sauce and given 2 different choices on clams- choose the mixed and you get an up charge. Excellent food. Staff were very busy but thorough. Space is too small for the popularity of the place. Reservations are essential.

I've been going to all three of Nick's location for years. The service and dishes are consistently excellent. Everything is good but a few favorites are the cheesy garlic bread, butternut squash ravioli, and the DeMare salad is a must every time. The grilled shrimp and calamari are outstanding. read more

Went to Nick's for dinner Friday night, so good!! I had the Calamari steak. I love Calamari and have never seen it prepared this way before. That's saying a lot because I'm a real foodie and I have previously lived in N.Y. It was so tender and flavored well with a lemon caper sauce. Nick even came and sat with me and chatted for a while. The staff was wonderful, very friendly and attentive. It's so hard to find a good Italian restaurant in this town with good food AND good customer service. Went for the first time yesterday and both my husband and loved his dish, shrimp Fra Diavolo. That sauce is amazing with just the right amount of spice. I had the capellini primavera, was also really good but had I known how good his sauce was, I would have requested that on my dish as well. The bread was tasty, especially the garlic rolls. We were hoping this would be a small gem since it's so close to home. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. Cold rolls, old iced tea (you know that taste when it sits out for a couple days), and when dinner came the plates were cold (like out of the fridge type cold, very odd). The food wasn't cold but when placed on cold plates, it wasn't hot either. Food was ok but nothing to write home about. Waiter was nice enough but not very helpful when asked questions about the menu. Overall, instead of adding a cozy little italian place to our list we crossed a "less than average" place off.
