My Italian friend recommended Uncle Sal's as an authentic Italian spot -- so I had to go on that recommendation and I definitely thought the food was good. I did go on a first date here and maybe not as romantic as I would have liked -- much more of a family vibe -- or in the bar area was all about sports. It wasn't too loud so that was good since we were doing a lot of talking, LOL. It was a Saturday night and my date had made a reservation but it looked like we could have easily gotten a table without one. There is a parking lot but couldn't tell if it was easy parking because we took an Uber since we were drinkiing. I started with an espresso martini and I would give it a 4/10 -- I think the espresso used was low quality because it wasn't my favorite. My date got a whiskey old fashioned and he liked it. Service was pretty good -- it was a busy Saturday night. I wanted to order a glass of wine with my meal but the server was gone for some time so my date had to flag her down. I ordered the halibut with crab on top and the server recommended a white wine to pair -- I thought it was an usual suggestion but went with it -- she didn't even suggest which white - so I went with a Sav Blanc and it was actually quite good -- I didn't catch the name. We started with some shrimp cocktail and that was pretty good, sauce was tasty. The halibut was actually quite good and cooked to perfection - the crab on top was really good too -- it came on a bed of linguini which was too much -- I didn't really eat that. My date had the filet special with a lobster sauce -- it looked really rich and the portion was huge! He couldn't even eat it all. Overall I enjoyed my meal, I was quite full when we left, LOL! I didn't catch how much the total cost was but I think it had to have been at least $200 -- so definitely some dough will be dropped! But for a special occasion it is worth it. read more

Visited a few times, it's a classic Italian restaurant with a great menu and welcoming atmosphere with amazing staff and even better food! On this trip we had a margarita pizza, chicken parm, and a side of meatballs, we also had a Caesar salad. Everything was 10/10 the freshness of each dish is present in the rich flavors, the freshest basil I've ever had on a pizza and as I love tons of it! The tomato sliced thin so it took in some heat and charred just a bit. The crust is like nothing I've ever had almost like focaccia bread but thinner the perfect crispiness. Now this chicken parm, it's huge we split it and left with 1/2! Comes with angel hair marinara and green beans, it's crisp but with a light breading and yet it's fully breaded again not like any chicken parm I've had, the angel hair marinara is super flavorful for a simple side plus buttery net not oil green beans. My friends and I had an amazing time here. Our server was Emily and she was so pleasant and attentive. She really made our dinner an enjoyable one. We ordered a nice bottle of wine and they brought us some garlic bread. The bread is delicious and a great start. For an appetizer we went with the Oysters Rockefeller which our party of 6 loved. Entrees come with a soup or Sal's house salad. I liked the salad, nice presentation. I had the Chicken Piccata which is my usual go to and it didn't disappoint. It came with a side of green beans, which happens to also be my favorite. My BF enjoyed his Veal Parmigiana. Everyone enjoyed their food. I liked the atmosphere, nice wood decor and being dimly lit adds a sophisticated but still casual vibe. They also have a cool bar area, nice bartenders. We randomly showed up at Uncle Sal's for dinner without a reservation, but the nice hostess was able to find us a small, perfect tabletop at the bar. The bar server was more than happy to take our orders and give us recommendations. She was very attentive and welcoming. The restaurant vibe was definitely old school Italian and the lighting was dim. We chose two house salads, butter & garlic bread, shrimp scampi, chicken Marsala and two wines. The house salads were nothing special really, a basic salad with dressing. My shrimp scampi was good, def better than ok, but not the best I have had and the shrimp were overcooked. My bf enjoyed his Chicken Marsala. The wines were delicious!! Not photoed, and for sure the shinning star in my mind, was the Tiramisu!! Cool dim atmosphere giving it that old timey feel with service staff that is attentive and knows what they're doing. We arrived on a Sunday at approximately 5pm. We didn't have a reservation but were seated within 5 minutes. The server was extremely pleasant. Delicious garlic bread was brought out quickly, as were our drinks. The shrimp cocktail was the perfect appetizer. The caprese salad was flavorful and actually quite filling. I've had lobster ravioli at a few different places and none compare to Uncle Sal's. I can definitely understand why it is a favorite. Recently we went to our favorite local Italian restaurant, Uncle Sal's, where we have gone for well over 20 years. It is not inexpensive but was always worth it. When the reservation was made we acknowledged on the call that we were always aware that they never split the check but asked if they would divide it based on the individual patron's (only 2) payments to be paid on the one check. We had done this in the past multiple times with zero problems. We were told clearly when we made the reservation first by a female, then after having to reschedule a week later by a male, we were given the same answer that they would give us separate totals, just not separate checks. Getting there before our dinner partners, we also asked the server if they would give us two totals for the check and she told us they do not do that despite what two different people told us on the phone when making our reservations. She said she would discuss this with the manager. He subsequently came over to us with an attitude, and face to match, just when the other couple showed up. He proceeded to tell us in a very curt, rude and embarrassing manner that they do not do this and discounted what the reservation takers had told us and dismissed that we ever had this done. He went on to berate us saying that it was stated in the menu (no separate checks, not for separate totals). Things got slightly heated so we let it go. Now our meal: the garlic bread and salads were as always good but the entree's were the worst we've ever had there. The chicken Parmesan and Marsala's were very tough, placed on literally a couple of spaghetti noodles with each dish with thick stewed tomatoes rather than their usual delicious sauce on the Parmesan. We said nothing about the Manager's attitude or the food to our dinner partners so as to keep the whole scenerio as pleasant at as possible. It should be noted that the server and bus person were excellent as usual. Later after we left and the two of us discussed this, it lead us to conclude that despite well over 2 or more decades going there that we had decided to never patronize or recommend this restaurant ever again. We wondered if there was a new ownership and/or chef. All in all this latest visit was an embarrassing, unpleasant and a disappointing experience. read more

The eggplant parmigiana with angel hair that I had was excellent. The eggplant cooked exactly the way it should be - tender and tasty. The service was great and the ambiance was too. I have heard about this place from numerous people. Love that it has been In Scottsdale for almost 40 years. We went for my mother's birthday because we wanted good food and didn't want to get super fancy. The food was good. Great value for a lot of food. Garlic bread was delicious. Caesar was just ok. Scampi, chicken parm and lasagna was what we all ordered and it was good. The tiramisu was a stand out and the chocolate chip cannoli also a must order. Great server. I would definitely go back. We had to ask three separate times, three, for simple water and bread. Not exactly a complex request. When our salad finally arrived, it had been sitting in the server station for over ten minutes, untouched, while staff stood around loudly chatting right over it. At one point, one of them shouted so aggressively that I saw spit fly. Over. My. Food. When we (politely) brought up the delays and a so called manager delivered the salad somehow things got worse. The manager didn't offer an apology--instead, we were met with attitude and an ultimatum "you want the salad or not" Imagine that: asking for water and timely service got us scolded like we were the problem. I said as a matter of fact I don't want any of it and he said fine then go! There are plenty of places in town with great food and even better hospitality. Uncle Sal's isn't one of them. The soup was a little bland and not very flavorful to my comparison of time of this review Olive Garden's Zuppa Toscana. I hadn't been to this place in at least 10 years! Unfortunately, it's not as good as I remember. My parents used to take me here all the time when they were alive and we enjoyed it thoroughly. This time they the food was just meh! I ordered the escargot and that was very good. I had a large glass of Sauvignon Blanc and that was good. However, I got the veal piccata and it was not that great. It was an excessive amount of sauce on it not that many capers and the veal was not that tender. I sat at the bar and the service was just so so. I ordered a Caesar salad and the bartender never asked if I wanted fresh cracked pepper! I also had to ask for Parmesan cheese.
