I go crazy for burgers, and on a recent group lunch visit was excited to try this place. It was not busy at all and I loved the open and airy vibe of Nicky's. Given the emptiness of this joint I had thought we would get great service...yeah no. We had two tables of 12 and it became clear quickly one table was getting great service and my table was a memory for our server after taking orders. While one table got their food quickly (and they arrived a good ten minutes after ours) our table got food in three waves which was awkward...and not short waves. The food - I got the shrimp wrap with tots and it was very good. Others said their food was solid except the soft pretzel appetizer which tasted as though it was a few decades old. I believe our waitress was having a bad day and reflected upon our entire experience. After we were served our meals we were not checked on; we had to wave down another server to get ketchup, mustard, and my friends French fries; and our bill was wrong as we were charged $9 extra for French fries that came with the burger. When we questioned the billing the waitress was definitely not happy and returned the corrected bill with no apology or no "thank you for coming in." We spent a weekend in Coronado a year ago. One day we biked to the beach and watched the sunset. As we biked back to the apartment we passed by Nicky Rottens. I made a note to visit as the place seemed fun and the menu had a bunch of interesting dishes. It's spring now. I sit inside Nicky Rottens and gaze out at the bay while my food is cooking. I found out the chickens wings come from free range chickens seasoned in salt + pepper baked then fried. I liked how there was a nice crunch to the skin and the meat was moist. I liked the light flavor from the salt + pepper. I asked for the bbq sauce on the side to add a bit of tangy sweetness to the wings. Burger with bacon lettuce and tomato was pretty huge. Nice char and beefy flavor from the beef while the bacon gave the burger a deep savory flavor. I like how they use better quality beef than what you will find at fast food spots like Burger King or casual dining spots like Red Robin. Fried zucchini slices were fried with a corn meal like batter. I'm not a fan as the batter to zucchini ratio was too high and I tasted mostly batter. I prefer the big zucchini spears I get at the Del Mar Fair which are fried in a light tempura batter which doesn't distract from the delicious zucchini. I tried a few tater tots and they had a crunchy outside and delicious potato flavor. Wish they were this good back when I had my first one in the elementary school cafeteria. Cookie bomb made with Glenview Farms vanilla ice cream. The chocolate chip cookie was rich and full of chocolate chips cookies. Very sweet. Vanilla ice cream was creamy and had a strong egg flavor. I think it's french vanilla. I mixed the 2 ingrediants myself as I hate having soft melted ice cream. So I ordered the ice cream in a frosted glass so I didn't get melted ice cream. Ice cream and chocolate chip cookie made for great flavor combination. Our waitress Tiffany was great making sure our drinks were refilled and providing to notch service. Kudos to her not getting flustered with all the food questions I kept peppering her with. Nicky Rottens has a sports bar vibe with all the huge widescreen tvs. 80's rock tunes playing in the background reminded me of high school. After dinner I walked across the street and enjoyed the awesome view of San Diego Bay. When you order your burger, you can choose your meat from the following: basil turkey patty, chicken breast, crispy chicken fritter, vegetarian patty and beef of course. I chose the basil turkey patty, it's a bit spicy but I really liked it. Also your bun selections are; their handcrafted daily buns, lettuce or wheat bun. I chose the lettuce, it's iceberg lettuce which I really like because it's a bit crunchy. The style of burger was difficult to pick as they all sound really delicious. Ended up with the Maui Wowi burger. It comes with; grilled pineapple ring, onions, tomato, lettuce, melted Swiss cheese and Rotten Sauce. Truly flavorful combination along with the tater tots for my side. My drink, the pineapple mojito ( pineapple Bacardi, mint fresh lime, lime juice, agave nectar, pineapple puree and soda water) paired nicely with my burger and was mixed really well. For my appetizer the pretzels with beer cheese and marinara on the side sounded good and I was not disappointed. Such a great combination of flavors along with warm fresh pretzels. Picked the New York cheesecake with strawberries and chocolate sauce for dessert. Not too sweet, balanced well with the strawberries. Our waitress Tiffany was very friendly, helpful and had wonderful suggestions. This is a great location for sports fans, as they have at least 11 big screen televisions scattered about the interior. I didn't even know this part of Coronado until this weekend when we visited Nicky Rottens. They're location offers views of the bay and downtown. I was blown away. AND, metered street parking here is so affordable. I think it's only .25c per hour. Note: there's a max 2 hours for metered parking so DON'T put more than .50c in the meter (you know we've all done this). The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating. We opted to sit inside as it was getting warm. We tried: Stone Delicious IPA: - They had just tapped the Stone Delicious IPA so this cold beer tasted, well, delicious that sunny afternoon. Bloody Mary: - Their bloody mary was served in a salted mason jar. The tomato juice was cold and welcoming. I didn't taste as much bacon infused vodka but you know what we could taste. That freshly fried strip of crispy bacon that you see on top of the drink. The bacon was hot and so crunchy. Chicken Wings: - We asked for the wings to be naked (wing sauces on the side). The order also comes with carrot and celery sticks. The wings were of nice size. Some tasted a bit drier than others. My favorite was the sweet chili sauce. The sticky sweet sauce went well with the crackling chicken skin. Friend loved their home made hot sauce. Jess, our server, said the (buffalo) hot sauce also had some of their ranch dressing incorporated into it. Pretzels and Beer Cheese: - There were three homemade pretzels per order. They gave us a side of marinara as well as beer cheese with the pretzels. The pretzels are sprinkled with salty Parmesan cheese. We liked the doughy-ness of these pretzels. Tuna Tower: - This was their special of the day and I'm so glad Jess suggested for us to order this. The yellowfin tuna was marinated in chili oil then tossed with micro cilantro, avocado, mango, cucumbers and siracha topped with chorizo, balsamic reduction, sesame seeds and wonton chips. The yellowfin tuna tasted fresh and bright. I could taste the chili oil it was tossed in. The diced mangos were beautiful in the tower but would have benefited from being ripened another day or two. Their use of micro cilantro in this dish was just fantastic. The wonton chips were warm and crunchy. Fried Zucchini: - They let me request it 'garlic' style (not on the menu). The fried slices of zucchini had a thicker batter and were tossed with pungent minced garlic and parmesan cheese. This would have been an amazing appetizer had the batter been fried crisper. 'Tons of Fun' Pastrami Burger: - The patty was prepared a pretty medium rare and was juicy. The pastrami were thicker slices, similar to sliced thin ham. The pastrami was well salted and seasoned. This was a hearty burger. The tater tots were crispy. Cookie Bomb: - The cookie bomb was a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie brought piping hot, in a skillet, to our table. It's topped with two (or was it three?!) scoops of vanilla ice cream. It's then topped with whipped cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce. The rim of the chocolate chip cookie skillet is lined with freshly cut strawberries. The cookie was crispy on the edges and contained so much molten chocolate chips. Came here after a failed attempt at getting seating down the road at Coronado brewing. Luckily, my 3 friends and I were able to grab seats outside of Nickys with no wait. Out door seating is first come first serve. The drink list is extensive with various beers on tap and cocktails available. Service was attentive with many refills of water and drink orders. I liked the different variations on classic drinks such as the white peach mule and pineapple mojito. They even offer alcoholic slushes.. But only 3 flavors at a time out of the many flavors listed.. As they are made in bulk and cannot be individualized. I ordered a regular mojito and it was great.. Just the way a mojito should taste. What I liked most was sitting outside and having a view of the water and San Diego skyline. You can't beat it. Will definitely be back. read more

Nicky's was on my foodie bucket list for a while so this weekend I decided to head down to Coronado and try them out. Eh...it was ok but not worth the drive from Moreno Valley. I enjoyed the hip check cocktail but there wasn't much whiskey in there. Saturday happy hours are a rarity so that was a nice bonus. I tried the Mac and cheese bites which ended up being some frozen, breaded Kraft Mac and cheese it seemed. Also tried the boneless buffalo wings, pretty hard to mess that up. I said I would give this place another shot on their service and they really dropped the ball today. Waited to be seated for quite a while, probably 5 min, until the bar tender saw us and said sit wherever. I wish I knew the bartenders name (brown hair and a few tattoos) cause she is the reason this place got 4 on my first review. Anyway, once I recognize service is poor I literally start my watch, sometimes places redeem themselves but not this one. 10 min passed without anyone coming over other than to remove the napkins and empty cans, we got up and left. I want to start by saying I NEVER write 1 star reviews but this was insane. We walked in and sat at the bar. We were literally in front of the bar well where the bartender was making drinks. When I tell you that we didn't even get eye contact... like nothing. No hello, no "hey sorry I'm busy I'll be right over", literally nothing. We sat there for over ten minutes until we asked the second bartenders (yes there were 2!) for menus. We sat there longer... and still nothing. The female bartender sat there and talked to the 2 men next to us and still, nothing. We finally got up and left. As we left, the male bartender said "oh what can I get you?" I just said "yeah we are leaving". We are a lesbian couple. Both in the bar business for 20+ years each. We are EASY going, we give grace and we definitely understand a bad day or bullshit at work in general... but I have never, ever experienced what we did today anywhere. Granted it was a busy night , but everything took forever to arrive and only half of our food came out , so only 2 of us were able to eat. By this time o had asked for silverware twice , and no one had brought it . I couldn't eat my salad until l had a fork. Finally everyone got their food , and I noticed my salad was missing dressing , I asked twice for it and it never came so I just ate my salad plain since it was getting late and we had to catch the ferry . We continued to wait which felt like forever for our server to come check on us , fill drinks etc but he never came . My husband went up twice to ask for boxes and the check . I cringed seeing the $120 bill, and our server never even apologized or asked how our food was etc... just the worst . I had my husband just pay and tip because we're not jerks , just so we could leave . It's really soured my thoughts about the restaurant and we're considering never coming back. read more

My family of four came for dinner. We for our kids the 3 sliders each and then we split the garlic tater tots. The sliders were great. The tots were just OK because although the tots were delicious, the 1/4 cup of garlic from a jar was too much. Interesting enough we ordered the kids food and tots right away so the kids could eat quicker without getting hangry. The server, however, never returned to take our order. We really wanted a burger and salad to share, but each time she said she would be right back. When we had to leave and asked for the check, we asked about our order again, and ask she said was, "well, you ordered tots, I didn't know you wanted anything else, " like, yeah, that's all I needed for dinner. So, although the atmosphere was cool, and the food seemed good, I can't comment on that, she didn't take our order to find out. Maybe I'll just put the order in myself next time, or I'll just ask someone else, I just didn't think I needed too. There is a reason it's called Nicky Rottens... horrible food. This is the third time here. The first time the food and service were awful. The second time the service was bad and we got charged twice due to the server or the system not working. Tonight the server was ok, not super motivated, but he seemed new. He kept asking the bartender what to do and bring. The food was terrible, definitely not quality and way overpriced. There is absolutely no ambiance. The lighting is super bright and cold and just a dead feeling in there. We got a cob sandwich which had beef jerky in the middle, it was so hard and dry that one could break their teeth on it. The bread was also the cheapest, toasted, white bread you can get. The sandwich had no flavor, it was almost like what you would imagine cardboard tasting like. We asked for an option of something healthy as a side and got a salad. They added a split charge (even though we didn't ask them to split it for us) and an upcharge of $5 for a side salad instead of fries. The side salad did not come as described on the menu, the size was tiny, and it was wilted. We also asked for oil and vinegar for our salad, which we got almost at the end of the meal. It was cooking oil plus white vinegar that you use for cleaning...we didn't touch it. You would think that with all the issues and how slow they were, the manager would've come over to talk with us but nope, didn't want to deal with it. They definitely need new cooks and new management because they've gone even more downhill than the last two times. The bill was ridiculous for what we ordered...two sandwiches, a Pepsi, and onion rings for over $70! You can get better quality food, service, and a lot better tasting, anywhere but here. To top it all off we both got sick once we got home, still have stomach aches. We gave a piece of the 'beef jerky' to our dog and he had tummy troubles too...he tooted! Don't waste your money. We started with the wings and they were pretty good, despite not being very spicy. The skin was nice and crispy though. We all had burgers of some sort. We decided to sit near the large open window to enjoy the beautiful view of downtown San Diego. The waitress came over immediately and we asked for change for the parking meter. She said we would only need one quarter since it was $0.25 per hour. We then asked her what were the top items and she stated they were known for their famous burgers. My hubby decided on the Rottens Tons of Fun Pastrami Burger and I had the cobb salad. Our food arrived quickly and I dove right in. My salad was large enough for two loaded with ingredients. I couldn't believe how much chicken they gave me. Every item on my plate was fresh and tasty, down to the honey mustard dressing. What I didn't realize was my husband's burger was the star of the day. I took one bite and fell in love. The burger had a wonderful char flavor, the pastrami was a perfect compliment as well as the sweet caramelized onions...it took it to the next level. The Swiss cheese lettuce tomatoes mustard and mayo was a perfect compilation of flavors dancing in my mouth. Each bite kept me coming back for more I almost ate my husband's entire Burger. What can I say I'm a fan and definitely will return whenever I visit Coronado. read more
